Reporting from Mexico City
Gunmen early today killed the mother and three other relatives of a marine who died in the shootout last week that claimed the life of one of Mexico's top drug lords, authorities said.
The attackers burst into the family home in the state of Tabasco shortly after midnight, shooting the marine's mother, sister, brother and an aunt, the state prosecutor's office said.
Speculation centered on the possibility that the attack was a revenge hit ordered by allies of the slain drug trafficker, Arturo Beltran Leyva, and intended as a chilling message to the Mexican military.
President Felipe Calderon condemned the "cowardly" murders, which he said showed a complete "lack of scruples" by criminal gangs.
Beltran Leyva, head of a major narcotics trafficking organization, was killed along with six of his gunmen in an intense Dec. 16 shootout with members of Mexico's navy special forces. One marine, Melquisedec Angulo Cordova, died in the operation.
Angulo Cordova was buried Monday, with his family and numerous navy officers in attendance. He was hailed a hero and received the highest honors the state could offer. His mother, Irma Cordova, received a folded flag. Hours later, she too was dead.
Prosecutors in Tabasco said the gunmen converged on the family home in at least three vehicles and fled after shooting the family. No suspects have been arrested.
The mother died of a single shot, while the sister had seven bullet wounds, prosecutors said.
THE BIDEN INVASION - Health inspections for foreign nationals entering our country illegally have gone out the window. That's enabled the importation of many diseases which affect livestock and other agricultural output, and already these things are happening. Legal immigrants and even returning U.S. citizens must pass these inspections to protect the U.S. food supply. But under Joe Biden's catch-and-release, illegals are exempt from such cumbersome requirements. MONICA SHOWALTER
