GUNTERSVILLE — U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions expressed concerns about the country’s economic woes and national defense strategy during his speech in front of about 125 people at a town hall meeting Tuesday night in the Guntersville Senior Center.
But when the Republican lawmaker stayed at the podium for a Q&A session after his speech, the audience peppered him with half a dozen questions about illegal immigration.
And he did not offer much in the way of answers, or hope for stricter enforcement anytime soon.

Sessions said immigration reform is not a priority with President Barack Obama, just like it wasn’t with former President George W. Bush.
“All these enforcement guys work for the president,” Sessions said. “We need a president that’s committed. I think we’re on the right track to make a breakthrough, but this administration is not committed.”
Sessions did say the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has declined and believed the number entering the country has dropped.
One person in the audience asked why E-Verify is not mandatory nationwide. E-Verify is an Internet-based system allowing employers to determine the eligibility of employees to work in the U.S.
The free service is voluntary for the most part and is operated by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration.
Sessions cited a lack of support in Congress to require E-Verify.
“Perhaps we should be pushing it more aggressively,” the senator said.

Albertville City Councilman Chuck Ellis asked Sessions for guidance regarding actions to fight illegal immigration at the city level. Because of federal jurisdiction issues, many states and cities are hesitant to aggressively tackle illegal immigration on their own for fear of litigious pitfalls.
“What do we need to do and who do we need to talk to?” Ellis asked.
Ellis is pushing his own employer accountability ordinance in Albertville, a measure designed to penalize employers for not verifying the legal status of their workers.
Sessions offered Ellis access to his judiciary staff for advice but provided nothing in the way of concrete answers.

Another audience member outlined how he had lost jobs related to home building to crews with illegal immigrants, leaving legal residents out of work.
Sessions said, “It’s not right,” but again provided no real answer to the man’s problem.
The senator faced similar questions about illegal immigration during a forum in Albertville in August 2008. He said then that he favored strict enforcement of illegal immigration laws and mandatory E-Verify. Like he did Tuesday night, Sessions blamed inaction on a president not interested in making the issue a priority.

Sessions’ speech focused on the economy, national security and energy policy.
State Treasurer and gubernatorial candidate Kay Ivey along with the mayors of Albertville, Guntersville and Grant attended the meeting. At least eight other elected officials and more than a dozen candidates running for office attended as well.
Sessions praised Ivey’s work as treasurer before settling in to his speech.
“I am worried about the American economy and the unemployment rate,” the senator said.
Sessions said the government’s massive debt risks creating a cloud over rebirth of the economy.
The senator called the president’s policy in Afghanistan “pretty healthy” but wished Obama had not announced a time frame when the U.S. would start withdrawing troops.
Sessions called the president’s policy on giving captured unlawful combatants Miranda rights “not smart.”
“The danger in all that is it’s a pre-9/11 mentality,” the senator said.
Sessions hit on the nation’s energy policy, saying it’s “still not where we need to be. It should be our policy to drive down the cost of energy. It’s not good for job creation to have energy prices go up.”
The senator touted safety and efficiency of nuclear power and called for less dependence on foreign oil.
“Sixty percent of the oil that goes in our vehicles is imported,” Sessions said.
The U.S. could produce more of its own oil and create jobs in the process, he said.
Sessions said the cap-and-trade legislation designed to curb emissions of carbon dioxide is likely dead for 2010. He said Alabama electric bills could increase $100 per month if the legislation is ever passed.
Sessions denounced the health care bill and called Sen. Scott Brown’s special election win last month a “Massachusetts miracle.”
“If you asked me two years ago, that would be the last state I’d want a pivotal election,” he said. “You had to be utterly oblivious to reality to not know that represented a final public decision on the health care vote.”
Responding to a question about the president’s nationally televised bipartisan health care summit scheduled Feb. 25, Sessions said he felt “uneasy.”
“If his goal is to pass a comprehensive bill I don’t think so,” the senator said. “He needs to say I’m willing to go step-by-step on some things we need to agree on.”
Other questions from the audience included one about AARP’s stand on the Senate and House versions of the health care bill. AARP is a popular nonprofit membership organization created to help people ages 50 and older.
“Sometimes I think AARP is an arm of the Democratic National Committee,” Sessions said, adding the House bill is “a little more socialist than ours.”

Obama soft on illegals enforcement
Arrests of illegal immigrant workers have dropped precipitously under President Obama, according to figures released Wednesday. Criminal arrests, administrative arrests, indictments and convictions of illegal immigrants at work sites all fell by more than 50 percent from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2009.
The figures show that Mr. Obama has made good on his pledge to shift enforcement away from going after illegal immigrant workers themselves - but at the expense of Americans' jobs, said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the Republican who compiled the numbers from the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). Mr. Smith, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said a period of economic turmoil is the wrong time to be cutting enforcement and letting illegal immigrants take jobs that Americans otherwise would hold.
