South Carolina: Governor Is Expected to Sign Immigration LawBy THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
A bill that requires the police to check suspects’ legal status and that businesses check their hires through a federal online system was sent to Gov. Nikki R. Haley on Tuesday for her signature. Her spokesman says she will sign it. The bill expands on a measure passed in 2008 that was considered among the nation’s toughest against illegal immigration. It requires officers to call immigration officials if they suspect someone is in the country illegally. The question must follow an arrest or a traffic stop for something else. The measure bars officers from holding someone on that suspicion. Opponents say the bill will encourage racial profiling and lead to lawsuits.
