Shift on marriage energizes immigration activists
By JERI CLAUSING
Associated Press
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.
(AP) -- President Barack Obama's shift to support gay marriage is energizing
young Hispanic voters who have been working side-by-side with gay activists in
their push for immigration reform. The
alliance has been growing across the country, helping dispel what many say is
an outdated notion that Hispanics are less tolerant of gays than the general
public.
"My members are telling me that we need to learn from
the gay community," said Dee Dee Garcia Blase, founder of the
Phoenix-based Somos Republicans. She is now head of the Tequila Party, which
she formed last year with the goal of registering young Hispanics to vote for
immigration-friendly candidates like Obama.
"We need to take a lesson from the (lesbian and gay)
community with regard to being that loud, squeaky wheel that gets fixed,"
Blase said. "We need to be more aggressive, and we realize it."
Both the Democratic and Republican parties are focused
heavily on winning the Hispanic vote, not just because it holds the key to
battleground states but because Latinos make up the fastest-growing minority
group. The government projects Hispanics
will account for roughly 30 percent of the population by 2050, doubling in size
and boosting their political power. Some 600,000 young Hispanics who were
born in the U.S. turn 18 each year to enter a widening pool of more than 21
million Hispanic eligible voters.
Conservative Hispanics see the president's endorsement of
same-sex marriage as an opportunity to draw Latinos to the Republican Party.
According to a 2007 religion survey of U.S. Latinos by the Pew Research
Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life, two-thirds of Hispanics said
their religious beliefs are an important influence on their political thinking.
While more than two-thirds of Hispanics identified themselves as Roman
Catholic, 15 percent said they were born-again Protestants. Evangelical
Latinos, who cite Biblical teaching for their stance against homosexuality, are
twice as likely as those who are Catholic to vote Republican.
But a poll released in April 2011 by the National Council of
La Raza, the nation's largest Hispanic civil rights advocacy organization, and
Social Science Research Solutions, a public opinion research firm, indicated
that while 66 percent of those surveyed identified as Roman Catholic, 49
percent favored allowing same-sex marriage and that number climbed to 59
percent in favor of giving gay and lesbian couples the same legal rights as
married couples. A surprising 69 percent favored allowing gay or lesbian
couples to marry in their church or religious institution and 52 percent did
not view homosexuality as a sin, compared to 38 percent who did. Some 69
percent said that good Christians should accept all people as God's creation
and not cast judgment, while 60 percent viewed discrimination against gays and
lesbians as a sin. Most of those surveyed, 71 percent, were under the age of
50.
While George W. Bush won 44 percent of the Hispanic vote in
2004, by 2008, 67 percent of the Hispanic vote had swung toward Obama. And that
vote was pivotal to his success in states like Colorado, where exit polls show
Republican Sen. John McCain would have won if only Caucasians had voted.
For many young Hispanics, both
immigrant and U.S.-born, the DREAM Act - the proposed legislation would make
students who entered the country without authorization as children eligible for
permanent residency and higher education - is a key issue. Obama supports the
proposal, while Romney's hard line against the measure, which he has called a
handout, has alienated many Hispanic voters. The Pew Hispanic Center found in a
December 2011 survey that 91 percent support the legislation.
Juan Rodriguez, who is active in the Florida Immigrant
Coalition and an immigrant himself, said the gay rights and immigrant rights
movements are "very aligned and becoming moreso every year.
The co-president of Blase's Tequila Party, Shara Mora James
is gay. And two so-called Dreamers, or leaders in the movement to pass DREAM
Act, have recently taken over two emerging gay rights groups, Freedom to Work
and Get Equal.
"The immigrant rights movement is grounded on
advocating with the most oppressed out of our community, and in many cases,
that has been queer undocumented youth," said Rodriguez. "We are
figuring out more and more ways of supporting each other because we all grew up
being told we needed to live in fear because of the communities we love."
Hispanic leaders and political watchers say they don't
expect Obama's announcement to have much impact on the Latino vote, which could
be key to victory in battleground states like New Mexico, Florida, Nevada and
Colorado.
"No, no, no, no, no. It's not going to affect my
vote," said Sister "Molly" Maria Luisa Munoz, a Roman Catholic
nun in Denver who works with immigrants and the gay and lesbian community.
"My mother straightened us out right away," she said. "God made
everybody. How we came out? That's God's creation. Nobody should judge."
At Barela's Coffee House in Albuquerque's predominantly
Hispanic South Valley, manager Geri Lucero said when the talk turns to politics
there, it's almost always about the economy.
"Economics is more important right now because people
are struggling with their money," the 57-year-old said, noting that
conversation on the day after Obama's announcement revolved around two recent
pit bull maulings, not gay marriage.
Will Obama's stance impact her vote? No, she replied.
Despite the increased acceptance of homosexuality and
same-sex marriage among Hispanics, one of the most recent polls of registered
voters on the issue, from Quinnipiac University in July 2011, shows only 37
percent of Hispanics said they would support a law in their state that would
allow same-sex couples to get married, compared with 46 percent overall. But a
Pew Research Center survey of Latinos in March 2011 showed 59 percent of
Hispanics said homosexuality should be accepted by society, compared to 58
percent of the general population.
Gary Segura, director of Chicano studies at Stanford
University, said that even though Hispanics hold more conservative views on
family and social issues than the general population, "it's not how
Latinos vote. It's about jobs, the economy, education."
The morning after Obama's announcement, discussion on a
Spanish-language radio station popular with Cuban-Americans in Miami focused on
the president's embrace of same-sex marriage, but most callers seemed more
interested in discussing the likely political calculations that went into the
decision than in slamming the president for violating their religious principles.
Delsa Bernardo, who co-owns Yiya's Gourmet Cuban Bakery and
Café in Miami with her life partner, said Obama's shift has actually
re-energized her support for the president. Bernardo said she backed Obama in
2008 but has since become disillusioned with him, mostly over the difficulty
she's had in getting business loans from banks that received the bailouts
backed by the president.
"It might swing my vote more to him because he's more
open on this," she said.
Still, some conservative Hispanics said they will use
Obama's endorsement of gay marriage to try to woo more Latinos to the
Republican Party.
About 25 conservatives representing 10 southern Nevada
churches met Thursday at the Casa Don Juan restaurant in downtown Las Vegas.
The group of pastors, Hispanic activists and social conservatives blasted
Obama's stance, fretting about the future of the family in the United States.
"He's destroying the fabric of the family," said
Juan Sclafani, a Republican pastor at the First Spanish Baptist Church in Las
Vegas. "His motivation is to get votes, but he doesn't realize that he is
destroying our nation."
Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of the Latino
Partnership for Conservative Principles in Washington, D.C., said his group
expects to use the gay marriage debate to recruit new Hispanic supporters for
Romney. They plan to focus on voter registration in Nevada and then branch out
to Florida, North Carolina, Colorado and New Mexico.
Colorado's Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio, who is
both gay and Hispanic, said it was difficult to say how Obama's statements
would affect the presidential race in Colorado this year.
"While it may not be the most politically advantageous
decision to make, he made the right decision," Palacio said. "I think
that's more important than anything else. He's putting the right thing to do
ahead of politics."

WHITE AMERICANS’ MAJORITY TO END BY MID-CENTURY – LATINO

WASHINGTON
(AP) — The estimated time when whites will no longer make up the majority of Americans has been pushed back eight
years — to 2050 — because the recession and stricter immigration policies
have slowed the flow of foreigners into the U.S.
Census Bureau figures released Wednesday update last year's
prediction that white children would become a minority in 2023 and the
overall white population would follow in 2042. The earlier estimate did not
take into account a drop in the number of people moving into the U.S. because
of the economic crisis and the immigration policies imposed after the Sept.
11, 2001, terror attacks.
The 2050 estimate is one of four projections released that is
based on rates for births and deaths and a scenario in which immigration
continues its more recent, slower pace of adding nearly 1 million new
foreigners each year. Demographers said that scenario offers the best look for
now at the future demographic makeup based on current conditions, rather than
other models which assume higher rates of immigration.
The total population should climb to 399 million by 2050, under
the new projection, with whites making up 49.9% of the population. Blacks
will make up 12.2%, virtually unchanged from today. Hispanics, currently 15%
of the population, will rise to 28% in 2050.
Asians are expected to increase from 4.4% of the population to
6%.
The point when minority children become the majority is expected
to have a similar delay of roughly eight years, moving from 2023 to 2031.
The population 85 and older is projected to more than triple by
2050, to 18.6 million.
The actual shift in demographics will be influenced by a host of
factors that can't be accurately forecast — the pace of the economic
recovery, cultural changes, natural or manmade disasters, as well as an
overhaul of immigration law, which may be debated in Congress as early as
next year.
As a result, the Census Bureau said the projections should be
used mostly as a guide.
The agency also released numbers showing projections based on
"high" rates of immigration — more likely if more-flexible
government policies and a booming U.S. economy attract large numbers of
foreigners — as well as "low" immigration, a possible scenario if
U.S. policies don't change much while the economy substantially improves.
_With high immigration, the minority "tipping point"
is moved up to 2040, two years earlier than the previous estimate. At that
time, Asians would have a much larger share, at 8%, since their population
growth is more dependent on immigration than birth rates.
_With low immigration, the "tipping point" arrives by
2045.
Under a purely theoretical "zero immigration" scenario
in which the U.S. effectively does not take in any immigrants, whites would
remain the majority in 2050, making up a solid 58% of the U.S. population. In
such a case, the share of Hispanics would increase to 21% because of high
fertility rates and a younger population.
Under a "zero immigration" model, the 65 and older
population also grows substantially faster, comprising nearly 1 in 4
Americans.
"These projections show that immigration will serve to
replenish our labor force as baby boomers age into retirement and make our
population younger without overburdening our schools and other community
resources," said William H. Frey, a demographer at Brookings
Institution.

What will
America stand for in 2050?
The US should think
long and hard about the high number of Latino immigrants.
By
Lawrence Harrison
Palo
Alto, Calif.
President Obama has encouraged Americans to
start laying a new foundation for the country – on a number of fronts. He has
stressed that we'll need to have the courage to make some hard choices. One of
those hard choices is how to handle immigration. The US must get serious about
the tide of legal and illegal immigrants, above all from Latin America.
It's not just a short-run issue of immigrants
competing with citizens for jobs as unemployment approaches 10 percent or the
number of uninsured straining the quality of healthcare. Heavy immigration from
Latin America threatens our cohesiveness as a nation.
The political realities of the rapidly growing
Latino population are such that Mr. Obama may be the last president who can
avert the permanent, vast underclass implied by the current Census Bureau
projection for 2050.
Do I sound like a right-wing
"nativist"? I'm not. I'm a lifelong Democrat; an early and avid
supporter of Obama. I'm gratified by his nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the
Supreme Court. I'm also the grandson of Eastern European Jewish immigrants; and
a member, along with several other Democrats, of the advisory boards of the
Federation for American Immigration Reform and Pro English. Similar concerns
preoccupied the distinguished Democrat Barbara Jordan when she chaired the
congressionally mandated US Commission on Immigration Reform in the 1990s.
Congresswoman Jordan was worried about the
adverse impact of high levels of legal and illegal immigration on poor
citizens, disproportionately Latinos and African-Americans. The principal beneficiaries of our current
immigration policy are affluent Americans who hire immigrants at substandard
wages for low-end work. Harvard economist George Borjas estimates that American
workers lose $190 billion annually in depressed wages caused by the constant
flooding of the labor market at the low-wage end.
The healthcare cost of the illegal workforce is
especially burdensome, and is subsidized by taxpayers. To claim Medicaid, you
must be legal, but as the Health and Human Services inspector general found, 47
states allow self-declaration of status for Medicaid. Many hospitals and
clinics are going broke because of the constant stream of uninsured, many of
whom are the estimated 12 million to 15 million illegal immigrants. This
translates into reduced services, particularly for lower-income citizens.
The US population totaled 281 million in 2000.
About 35 million, or 12.5 percent, were Latino. The Census Bureau projects that
our population will reach 439 million in 2050, a 56 percent increase over the
2000 census. The Hispanic population in 2050 is projected at 133 million – 30
percent of the total and almost quadruple the 2000 level. Population growth is
the principal threat to the environment via natural resource use, sprawl, and
pollution. And population growth is fueled chiefly by immigration.
Consider what this, combined with worrisome
evidence that Latinos are not melting into our cultural mainstream, means for
the US. Latinos have contributed some positive cultural attributes, such as
multigenerational family bonds, to US society. But the same traditional values
that lie behind Latin America's difficulties in achieving democratic stability,
social justice, and prosperity are being substantially perpetuated among
Hispanic-Americans.
Prominent Latin Americans have concluded that
traditional values are at the root of the region's development problems. Among
those expressing that opinion: Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa; Nobelist
author Octavio Paz, a Mexican; Teodoro Moscoso, a Puerto Rican politician and
US ambassador to Venezuela; and Ecuador's former president, Osvaldo Hurtado.
Latin America's cultural problem is apparent in
the persistent Latino high school dropout rate – 40 percent in California,
according to a recent study – and the high incidence of teenage pregnancy,
single mothers, and crime. The perpetuation of Latino culture is facilitated by
the Spanish language's growing challenge to English as our national language.
It makes it easier for Latinos to avoid the melting pot and for education to
remain a low priority, as it is in Latin America – a problem highlighted in
recent books by former New York City deputy mayor Herman Badillo, a Puerto
Rican, and Mexican-Americans Lionel Sosa and Ernesto Caravantes.
Language is the conduit of culture. Consider:
There is no word in Spanish for "compromise" (compromiso means
"commitment") nor for "accountability," a problem that is
compounded by a verb structure that converts "I dropped (broke, forgot)
something" into "it got dropped" ("broken,"
"forgotten").
As the USAID mission director during the first
two years of the Sandinista regime in Nicaragua, I had difficulty communicating
"dissent" to a government minister at a crucial moment in our efforts
to convince the US Congress to approve a special appropriation for Nicaragua.
I was later told by a bilingual, bicultural
Nicaraguan educator that when I used "dissent" what my Nicaraguan
counterparts understood was "heresy." "We are, after all,
children of the Inquisition," he added.
In a letter to me in 1991, Mexican-American
columnist Richard Estrada described the essence of the problem of immigration
as one of numbers. We should really worry, he wrote, "when the numbers
begin to favor not only the maintenance and replenishment of the immigrants'
source culture, but also its overall growth, and in particular growth so large
that the numbers not only impede assimilation but go beyond to pose a challenge
to the traditional culture of the American nation."
Obama should confront the challenges by
enforcing immigration laws on employment to help end illegal immigration. We
should calibrate legal immigration annually to (1) the needs of the economy, as
Ms. Jordan urged, and (2) past performance of immigrant groups with respect to
acculturation.
We must declare our national language to be
English and discourage the proliferation of Spanish- language media. We should
limit citizenship by birth to the offspring of citizens. And we should provide
immigrants with easy-to-access educational services that facilitate
acculturation, including English language, citizenship, and American values.

And Save It From Itself."

But his worst and most destructive

But his worst and most destructive legacy for the United States stems from his authorship of the 1965 "Immigration Reform Act" that added the bulk of our additional 100 million people into America within 40 years. It jumped legal immigration from 170,000 annually to 1.1 million annually. Added to that disastrous environmental legacy, his actions provoked a complete ethnic change of our stable society into a fractured civilization. How? He provided for entrance of immigrants from cultures totally incompatible with U.S. culture. He downgraded citizenship by not enforcing our laws or maintaining educational standards.
"We are the only country in history that deliberately changed its ethnic makeup, and history has few examples of 'diversity' creating a stable society." Governor Richard D. Lamm
As those immigrants poured into this country, he facilitated and languished as millions of illegal aliens marched across our borders to wreak havoc on our schools, communities, jobs, hospitals, language and prisons. Over 20,000 members of MS-13 gangs distribute $130 billion in drugs yearly. We pay for 400,000 babies born to illegal alien mothers annually. We suffer 28 million Americans on food stamps because illegals downgrade wages and take jobs from our working poor.
Kennedy single handedly planted the seeds for the destruction of our country per the words of President Teddy Roosevelt, "The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, or preventing all possibility of its contin- uing as a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities."
How did Kennedy answer that crisis of unrelenting illegal border crossing?
*
He proposed, wrote and encouraged Ronald Reagan to sign the 1986 Immigration Amnesty that allowed what he said were only 1.3 million illegals. The true number of illegal aliens that gained instant citizenship became 4.3 million.

Last June, 2007, as another 20 million illegal aliens broke over U.S. borders since 1986,
Kennedy tried
to give another amnesty by forcing S.B. 1639
into law with his bluster and pompous bellowing. He voted to double legal immigration to 2.2 million annually! Kennedy remains responsible for our $346 billion annual costs paying for illegal aliens!
In Dr. Otis Graham's "Unguarded Gates: A History of America's Immigration Crisis," he writes, "Most Western elites continue urging the wealthy West not to stem the migrant tide, but to absorb our global brothers and sisters until their horrid ordeal has been endured and shared by all--ten billion humans packed onto an ecologically devastated planet."
He's voted against making English our national language which ensures further Balkanization of our nation via linguistic chaos. When a nation cannot speak to itself, it becomes fractured and separated.
While he battles with brain cancer, we battle for our nation's life. While he sails his boat around Martha's Vineyard, we pick up millions of pieces of trash on our borders from invading illegal alien hordes that he encourages. While he tips yet another glass of wine, we struggle to maintain our schools, communities, hospitals and prisons from this illegal invasion. While he sat on his barnyard wide rear-end for 40 years in the Senate creating the problems that now destroy our nation, we watched the American Dream turn into a nightmare.
Contrary to the editors of the Denver Post, Ted Kennedy may be likened to Nero of Rome who fiddled while it burned. Kennedy drank while we fought for our nation's survival. Kennedy ate at the finest tables while we struggled with his voting for H-1B and H-2B visas that displaced millions of American workers. Kennedy sailed his boat while our nation sank into consequences of a dysfunctional and unsustainable nation.
Because of Kennedy, our successful culture finds itself turning into a foreign culture that failed, i.e., Mexico.
The March PEW report shows Mexicans in America
becoming the new dominate majority by 2050 at 53 percent.
While we struggle nostril-deep in the nightmare waters of immigration swirling around us, we may well drown, too!

the American Hospital Association the estimated uncompensated cost of care in
2000 was $21.6 billion. Roughly 6% of total expenses. The government allotted
only $1 billion to help cover those costs. Anchor babies account for roughly 10%
of all US births. In 2003, anchor babies accounted for 70% of all births in San
