Poll: Most Americans Prefer Illegal Immigrants Head Home
A new poll using neutral language — and avoiding the false choice of
conditional legalization vs. mass deportations — finds that most Americans want
illegal immigrants to return to their home counties, rather than be given legal
status. The findings also show a very large gap in intensity, with those who
want illegal immigrants to head home feeling much stronger about that option
than those who would like to see illegal immigrants receive legal status.

*There is an enormous gap in intensity between the two views on immigration. Of those who want illegal immigrants to head home, 73 percent indicated that they felt “very strongly” about that view, while just 35 percent of those who want illegal immigrants to get legal status said they felt very strongly about this view.
*One reason the public may prefer that illegals head home is a strong belief that efforts to enforce immigration laws have been inadequate — 64 percent said that enforcement of immigration laws has been “too little”, while just 10 percent said that it had been too much, and 15 percent said it was “just right”.
*When asked why there is a large illegal population in the country, voters overwhelming (71 percent) thought it was because we had not made a real effort to enforce our immigration laws. Only 18 percent said it was because we were not letting in enough immigrants legally.
*Another reason for skepticism about legalization is that most voters (69 percent) agreed with the statement that “giving legal status to illegal immigrants does not solve the problem because rewarding law breaking will only encourage more illegal immigration.” Just 26 percent disagreed.
*When asked if they had confidence that immigration laws would be enforced in the event of a legalization, just 27 percent expressed confidence that there would be enforcement, while 70 percent indicated that they were not confident immigration law would be enforced.
*Enforcement remains politically very popular. Of likely voters, 53 percent indicated that they would be more likely to support a political party that supports enforcing immigration laws vs. only 32 percent who said they would be more likely to support a party that supports legalization.
The poll was conducted by Pulse Opinion Research and is a national survey of
1,000 likely voters conducted January 23-24, 2013. The margin of error for

The setting was not quite the
flight deck of the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln with a “Mission Accomplished” banner
as the backdrop, but it was the next best thing. Speaking at the Center for
American Progress (CAP) on Nov. 13, Homeland Security Secretary Janet
Napolitano declared victory over illegal immigration and announced that the
Obama administration is ready to move forward with a mass amnesty for the
millions of illegal aliens already living in the United States.
Arguing the Obama administration’s
case for amnesty, Napolitano laid out what she described as the “three-legged
stool” for immigration reform. As the administration views it, immigration
reform must include “a commitment to serious and effective enforcement,
improved legal flows for families and workers, and a firm but fair way to deal
with those who are already here.”
Acknowledging that a lack of
confidence in the government’s ability and commitment to effectively enforce
the immigration laws it passes proved to be the Waterloo of previous efforts to
gain amnesty for illegal aliens, Napolitano was quick to reassure the American
public that those concerns could be put to rest.
“For starters, the security
of the Southwest border has been transformed from where it was in 2007,” stated
the secretary. Not only is the border locked up tight, she continued, but the
situation is well in-hand in the interior of the country as well. “We’ve also
shown that the government is serious and strategic in its approach to
enforcement by making changes in how we enforce the law in the interior of the
country and at worksites…Furthermore, we’ve transformed worksite enforcement to
truly address the demand side of illegal immigration.”
If Rep. Joe Wilson had been
in attendance to hear Secretary Napolitano’s CAP speech he might well have had
a few choice comments to offer. But since he wasn’t, we will have to rely on
the Department of Homeland Security’s own data to assess the veracity of
Napolitano’s claims.
According to DHS’s own
reports, very little of our nation’s borders (Southwestern or otherwise) are
secure, and gaining control is not even a goal of the department. DHS claims to
have “effective control” over just 894 miles of border. That’s 894 out of 8,607
miles they are charged with protecting. As for the other 7,713 miles? DHS’s
stated border security goal for FY 2010 is the same 894 miles.
The administration’s
strategic approach to interior and worksite enforcement is just as chimerical
as its strategy at the border, unless one considers shuffling paper to be a
strategy. DHS data, released November 18, show that administrative arrests of immigration
law violators fell by 68 percent between 2008 and 2009. The department also
carried out 60 percent fewer arrests for criminal violations of immigration
laws, 58 percent fewer criminal indictments, and won 63 percent fewer
convictions.
While the official
unemployment rate has climbed from 7.6 percent when President Obama took office
in January to 10 percent today, the administration’s worksite enforcement
strategy has amounted to a bureaucratic game of musical chairs. The
administration has all but ended worksite enforcement actions and replaced them
with paperwork audits. When the audits determine that illegal aliens are on the
payroll, employers are given the opportunity to fire them with little or no
adverse consequence to the company, while no action is taken to remove the
illegal workers from the country. The illegal workers simply acquire a new set
of fraudulent documents and move on to the next employer seeking workers
willing to accept substandard wages.
In Janet Napolitano’s
alternative reality a mere 10 percent of our borders under “effective control”
and sharp declines in arrests and prosecutions of immigration lawbreakers may
be construed as confidence builders, but it is hard to imagine that the
American public is going to see it that way. If anything, the administration’s
record has left the public less confident that promises of future immigration
enforcement would be worth the government paper they’re printed on.
As Americans scrutinize the
administration’s plans to overhaul immigration policy, they are likely to find
little in the “three-legged stool” being offered that they like or trust. The
first leg – enforcement – the administration has all but sawed off. The second
– increased admissions of extended family members and workers – makes little
sense with some 25 million Americans either unemployed or relegated to
part-time work. And the third – amnesty for millions of illegal aliens – is
anathema to their sense of justice and fair play.
As Americans well know,
declaring “Mission Accomplished” and actually accomplishing a mission are two
completely different things. When it comes to enforcing immigration laws, the
only message the public is receiving from this administration is “Mission
Aborted.”

Obama soft on illegals enforcement
Arrests of illegal immigrant workers have dropped
precipitously under President Obama, according to figures released Wednesday.
Criminal arrests, administrative arrests, indictments and convictions of
illegal immigrants at work sites all fell by more than 50 percent from
fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2009.
The figures show that Mr. Obama has made good on his pledge
to shift enforcement away from going after illegal immigrant workers themselves
- but at the expense of Americans' jobs, said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the
Republican who compiled the numbers from the Department of Homeland Security's
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). Mr. Smith, the top
Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said a period of economic turmoil
is the wrong time to be cutting enforcement and letting illegal immigrants take
jobs that Americans otherwise would hold.

Californians could lose unemployment benefits

In the discussion on the so-called “fiscal cliff,” very little
attention has been devoted by the political establishment and media to the
imminent expiration of extended federal unemployment benefits. If these
benefits are allowed to expire, some 2 million people throughout the US,
including 400,000 in California, will be immediately cut off from this limited
form of cash assistance.
Amidst the worst jobs crisis in the US since the Great Depression,
the Democrats and Republicans have cited the official fall in unemployment
rates as a justification for cutting the duration of benefits in many states.
In fact, the drop in unemployment is due largely to the departure of millions
of people from the labor force because they have given up hope of finding a
job. The overall employment-population ratio remains close to the lows reached
in 2009, and long-term unemployment remains near record highs.
California has already sent out letters to recipients informing
them that their benefits are set to run out. The letters provided no formal
recourse, except information on how to apply for food stamps and other
services. The expiration of federal benefits will mean that many workers will
lose their homes and be forced to live with relatives, if they can. For many of
the unemployed, the benefits, up to $450 a week, are the only way they can pay
for vital necessities like gas, food, and medicine.
According to California’s Employment Development Department (EDD),
as of October, 35 percent of California’s 2 million unemployed were out of work
for 52 weeks or more. In the same month, California’s jobless rate declined to
10.1 percent, compared to 11.5 percent a year earlier. Real unemployment,
including those who have stopped looking for work, is much higher. California
has the third highest rate of unemployment in the US, after Nevada and Rhode
Island.
The end of payments for the unemployed is a deliberate policy of
the ruling class to force workers to compete for poverty-level jobs with no
benefits. The claim that there is no money to finance these programs is a lie.
The estimated cost to extend benefits, $30 billion, is small change compared to
the hundreds of billions the US government has spent on the last decade of
neocolonial wars, bank bailouts, and tax cuts for the rich.
Whether or not the benefits are allowed to expire, the ruling
class, led by the Obama administration, is committed to make the working class
pay for the economic crisis.
The WSWS spoke with unemployed workers at a job center in
Temecula, California. Temecula is part of an area called the “inland empire”
which includes Riverside and San Bernardino counties. According to the EDD,
more than 44,000 Californians in this area could see their benefits expire. The
jobless rate in the region is more than 11.3 percent.
Two of the workers interviewed are from Hemet, a city that has a
16 percent official unemployment rate. The number of people living below the
poverty level in Hemet is 19.4 percent, compared to 14.4 percent in the state
as a whole. Hemet's median household income is $34,273, as compared to the
state median of $61,632.
Mike, a construction worker for over 20 years, commented, “They're
cutting off 400,000 from unemployment. There's going to be a lot of crime.
People will use their survival skills to stay alive.”
He added, “I think it's wrong. How are people going to live?
Everyone's depending on that money. If they cut it off it's going to cause a
lot of chaos. There's money for other stuff, but when it comes to people
living, they don't give a s__t. This is America, they should help us out.”
The WSWS pointed out the trillions expended to finance wars and
the bank bailout. Mike noted, “That should go towards unemployment, we should
be helping each other. Banks don't need bailing out. If they don't make it let
them fail. [Utility company] Edison was going bankrupt, and now they've tripled
the rates. Stabbing the lower and middle class in the back. They are taking
from those who can't afford anything.”
When asked about how the cut-off of benefits will affect him, Mike
said, “I'm not going to be able to pay my rent if I can't find a job soon
enough. It's going to be a bad thing. Right now I'm struggling. I've got a car
that's falling apart. I'm trying to get another car so I have a dependable car
to get to work. Every little bit I have is going to have to go to surviving,
rather than finding a dependable car. It's going to make it hard to try and
find work.
“I've been calling unemployment for the past two weeks and haven't
been able to get a hold of anyone. After fifteen minutes of punching numbers
and menus, you're told ‘We are receiving too many calls. Go online or call back
later.’”
Wendy, a waitress for three years at a restaurant in Hemet that
closed down, told the WSWS about the city, “Hemet is a hard place for
restaurants to stay open. There isn't enough business.”
When asked what she felt about benefits being cut off, she
replied, “They're already so hard to get. My benefits were cut off because I
missed my phone interview. My phone was lost or stolen, and when I did get a
new phone, I couldn't get through to anyone. I kept calling and it would say
‘We are receiving a high volume of calls, call back later.’”
Paula is a single mother and former administrative worker in
Thousand Oaks who has been unemployed for 13 months. She said, “I moved to
Thousand Oaks for this job. Because of the economy they started letting people
go. I was one of the newer ones, so I was let go. I lost my apartment because I
couldn't keep up with my rent, and then I lost my car because I couldn't keep
up with the payments.
“They told me that if I started school, they would cut off my
benefits. That's the thing that I don't understand, why we can't go to school
and collect unemployment? How am I supposed to get a better job?
“My son is 4 years old and is going to start school next year. I
want him to have everything he needs. I want to be on my feet before then.”
Arnaldo has been working and living in the US for 25 years. His
green card just expired, and he cannot renew it because he has no proof of
employment. He can be deported at any moment. “It's impossible to find work,”
he said. “I've been unemployed since August of 2011 and have been looking all
over for a job. I'm in Perris, but I'll go anywhere there's work—Riverside,
Temecula, wherever.”
“The unemployment benefits aren't enough for daily life,” he
added. “You get 50 percent, 60 percent of what you were making in benefits and
you find yourself borrowing money, taking loans or else just not able to pay
for your car or your bills.”

Undocumented
immigrants could get jobless benefits
Legislation
introduced Tuesday would give about 400,000 undocumented immigrants in
California the same rights as citizens to unemployment benefits and various
other government services.
Assembly
Bill 35 targets a select group of undocumented immigrants, participants in
President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, who
came to the United States as youths and have lived generally productive lives
for numerous years.
Gov.
Jerry Brown signed legislation, effective Jan. 1, that enables participants in
the federal program to obtain California driver's licenses. AB 35 would provide
them with rights to a state ID card, unemployment benefits and state-administered medical services.
AB
35 was proposed by Assemblyman Roger Hernández, a West Covina Democrat who was
named chairman of the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee this month.
"California
embodies the greatest diversity in the world," Hernández said in a written
statement. "We recognize we will need the collective skills and talents of
these young immigrants to aid out state in reaching our true potential."
As
labor committee chairman, Hernández said, "I am ready to carry my part in
making sure their integration into our workforce, economy and society becomes a
reality."

know illegal immigration is no longer really unlawful, but is it moral?
Usually
Americans debate the fiscal costs of illegal immigration. Supporters of open
borders rightly remind us that illegal immigrants pay sales taxes. Often their
payroll-tax contributions are not later tapped by Social Security payouts.
Opponents
counter that illegal immigrants are more likely to end up on state assistance,
are less likely to report cash income, and cost the state more through the
duplicate issuing of services and documents in both English and Spanish. Such
to-and-fro talking points are endless.
So
is the debate over beneficiaries of illegal immigration. Are profit-minded
employers villains who want cheap labor in lieu of hiring more expensive
Americans? Or is the culprit a cynical Mexican government that counts on
billions of dollars in remittances from its expatriate poor that it otherwise
ignored?

President Obama's Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is supposed to
represent American workers. What you need to know is that this longtime
open-borders sympathizer has always had a rather radical definition of
"American." At a Latino voter registration project conference in Los
Angeles many years ago, Solis asserted to thunderous applause, "We are all
Americans, whether you are legalized or not."
That's right. The woman in charge of enforcing our employment laws

dream and those who didn't.

wages." Employers that hire and exploit illegal immigrant workers deserve
full sanctions and punishment. But it's the timing, tone-deafness and
underlying blanket amnesty agenda of Solis' illegal alien outreach that has so
many American workers and their representatives on Capitol Hill rightly upset.
With double-digit unemployment and a growing nationwide revolt
over Washington's border security failures, why has Solis chosen now to hire
250 new government field investigators to bolster her illegal alien workers'
rights campaign? (Hint: Leftists unhappy with Obama's lack of progress on
"comprehensive immigration reform" need appeasing. This is a quick
bone to distract them.)
Unfortunately, the federal government is not alone in lavishing
attention and resources on workers who shouldn't be here in the first place. As
of 2008, California, Florida, Nevada, New York, Texas and Utah all expressly
included illegal aliens in their state workers' compensation plans -- and more
than a dozen other states implicitly cover them.
Solis' public service announcement comes on the heels of
little-noticed but far more troubling comments encouraging illegal alien
workers in the Gulf Coast. Earlier this month, in the aftermath of the BP oil
spill, according to Spanish language publication El Diario La Prensa, Solis
signaled that her department was going out of its way to shield illegal
immigrant laborers involved in cleanup efforts. "My purpose is to assist
the workers with respect to safety and protection," she said. "We're
protecting all workers regardless of migration status because that's the
federal law." She told reporters that her department was in talks with
local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials who had visited
coastal worksites to try to verify that workers were legal.
No word yet on whether she gave ICE her "we are all
Americans, whether you are legalized or not" lecture. But it's a safe bet.

Across America a terrible story unfolds trapping honest and hard working Americans between the proverbial rock and a hard space. It is a story that I have gleaned from conversations with those directly impacted. It is a story I have learned from reading between the lines in the print media.
Many of America's print media publications are now facing well deserved financial extinction due to their penchant for bias, censorship, and promotions of unpopular political positions, rather than reporting facts. No issue illustrates their heavy bias more than illegal immigration.
American readers are bombarded on a daily basis with the latest illegal alien sob stories about how illegal aliens are getting laid off, being profiled, discriminated against, or finding it harder to get licenses and government benefits from mean and hateful Americans, while the most important part of the story is conspicuously absent!
The Americans who are falling down in historic numbers are not in these articles or publications!
The propagandists at the newspapers should take heed, when I remind them of two important things. One, people read the news to learn the facts and not the asserted political positions of the paper. Two, readers look for characters in articles, as well as in movies and books, who they can identify with.
Americans are losing their wages, jobs, homes, health, and sanity in numbers unprecedented since the Great Depression, yet you will not hear their trials and troubles in your elitist newspapers. And if you do get a glimpse of the horror of your neighbors and fellow countrymen, you will most certainly never hear of what I will speak of next.
You will not hear about how illegal immigration is trapping Americans in a vise which is leading to the destruction of their lives.
I hope no one in America needs a lecture on how horrible losing your job can be when there are no other jobs available and that not being able to provide health insurance or even food for your children is a life threatening situation. Marching your belongings and loved ones out of your house in front of a Sheriff's deputy is a story Americans are living out in larger numbers daily.

In 2009, when you go to look for a new job of any kind you will find that many jobs are not even listed in the Want Ads because those jobs are filled with illegal aliens and a surplus of legal immigrants. The employers have no desire to spend money on newspaper ads, if they have an opening they just tell the foreman, ask their existing workers, or in some cases call up the drug and human importing cartels in Mexico to order a new shipment of illegal aliens workers, as was the case with Tyson Foods here in North Carolina.
So American workers are not even finding notices for many jobs in construction, landscaping, hospitality and food industries, agriculture, meat processing, textiles, raw materials production, etc...
And even if you do approach one of these employers, you may find yourself in the position that many ALIPAC supporters have reported.
The employers of illegal aliens and H2B visa immigrants do not want Americans in the mix. There is rampant discrimination against America workers because they do not speak Spanish, are more concerned about worker health and safety laws, and might contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement to report illegal workers and visa fraud.
Even if you did go out on your own to find the non-advertised menial jobs, and you made it past the discrimination factors, you still have two major hurdles.
One, multiple studies have documented the common sense knowledge that illegal immigration greatly depreciates wages for American workers and legal immigrants. As far back as 1968, the renowned labor leader Cesar Chavez patrolled the border and ordered his union to call Federal authorities to try and stop illegal immigration. Wages have been significantly depressed due to the intentional hyper inflation of the labor markets.
If you are a full tax paying and debt carrying American, many of these jobs now offer wages that are insufficient for you to even make ends meet!
But illegal aliens are not just in the menial jobs or unskilled labor sector of our economy. We have seen countless news reports over the last few years documenting illegal aliens working on commercial jet engines, or in nuclear power plants, or the technical fields?
With the almost minimal enforcement levels of our existing immigration laws, illegal aliens are working in jobs across the spectrum!
Anyone seeking a job in a call center or the Information Technology fields will find many of those jobs have been sent offshore to India. As for the jobs which remain here at home with Google, IBM, Microsoft, and many others, the positions are taken and being filled with H1B visa holders from India and China.
According to our unenforced existing immigration laws, an H1B visa worker can only be used, if an American worker cannot be found for the position and if the immigrant will be paid the same as an American worker would.
But, since nobody is enforcing those laws, many Global companies are intentionally throwing out their American workers and replacing them with foreign labor that will work for much less!
And if you go out in search of an American small business that plays by the rules and respects our laws, you will find fewer and fewer of them. Honest employers who hire Americans and legal immigrants have found themselves unable to compete with the low bids of less scrupulous competitors who hire illegal aliens. You won't hear their voices in this barage of biased articles either!
Only through the valiant efforts of talk radio show hosts and brave men and women like Glen Beck, Lou Dobbs, and Michelle Malkin will you hear these voices represented in the media. And each of them faces the same threat of smears and lies from the ideology fascists for speaking out for the innocent American workers and millions of victims of illegal immigration, corporate greed, and political corruption in our nation.
So American workers are facing what I call "The Great American Replacement Act" where Americans are being replaced in jobs, homes, schools, colleges, and at the ballot box through rampant illegal immigration combined with historically high levels of new worker visas being issued.
To ad further insult to injury, the illegal alien Amnesty supporting groups and politicians are now trying to claim that even though 11 Million Americans are out of work, we need Comprehensive Immigration Reform Amnesty right away for the approximately 7 million illegal aliens, which are currently holding jobs that our existing laws mandate are illegal for them to have in the first place!
How can so many politicians and people in the media ignore and neglect innocent Americans who are suffering and having their lives ruined? The dire consequences for Americans due to the bad economy combined with rampant illegal immigration are horrific. The fact that their stories are not told and their voices are censored by the print media is even more horrifying.
For things to improve for Americans, we need our existing immigration laws, and all workplace and financial regulatory laws fully enforced. Those left in the media with a soul need to illuminate these problems and side with the American public before it is too late.
We need to know how much the influence the billions of dollars in perks, contributions, and payoffs coming into Washington, DC (See Bill and Hillary Clinton) from Global corporations and countries hostile to the United States like Saudi Arabia and China are responsible for these dastardly, illegal, and unconstitutional policies.
The American public is no longer in control of our national destiny. We are no longer self governed or secure. We are not being asked for our support, we are being told we will suffer in silence or face aggressive ridicule. We are being dictated to by politicians who's pockets are lined with the gold of powerful bankers and foreign nations.
We are now entering an even more dangerous phase where many Americans are losing all faith in the political process. There is dangerous talk in private conversations, and many are saying "America has already been conquered without a shot fired."
Perhaps America's most powerful enemies have discovered how to take us with a Trojan horse? No adversary would want to take us on militarily or do anything to awaken the ire of the American populace. But illegal aliens are not just in the menial jobs or unskilled labor sector of our economy. We have seen countless news reports over the last few years documenting illegal aliens working on commercial jet engines, or in nuclear power plants, or the technical fields?
With the almost minimal enforcement levels of our existing immigration laws, illegal aliens are working in jobs across the spectrum!
Anyone seeking a job in a call center or the Information Technology fields will find many of those jobs have been sent offshore to India. As for the jobs which remain here at home with Google, IBM, Microsoft, and many others, the positions are taken and being filled with H1B visa holders from India and China.
According to our unenforced existing immigration laws, an H1B visa worker can only be used, if an American worker cannot be found for the position and if the immigrant will be paid the same as an American worker would.
But, since nobody is enforcing those laws, many Global companies are intentionally throwing out their American workers and replacing them with foreign labor that will work for much less!
And if you go out in search of an American small business that plays by the rules and respects our laws, you will find fewer and fewer of them. Honest employers who hire Americans and legal immigrants have found themselves unable to compete with the low bids of less scrupulous competitors who hire illegal aliens. You won't hear their voices in this barage of biased articles either!
Only through the valiant efforts of talk radio show hosts and brave men and women like Glen Beck, Lou Dobbs, and Michelle Malkin will you hear these voices represented in the media. And each of them faces the same threat of smears and lies from the ideology fascists for speaking out for the innocent American workers and millions of victims of illegal immigration, corporate greed, and political corruption in our nation.
So American workers are facing what I call "The Great American Replacement Act" where Americans are being replaced in jobs, homes, schools, colleges, and at the ballot box through rampant illegal immigration combined with historically high levels of new worker visas being issued.
To ad further insult to injury, the illegal alien Amnesty supporting groups and politicians are now trying to claim that even though 11 Million Americans are out of work, we need Comprehensive Immigration Reform Amnesty right away for the approximately 7 million illegal aliens, which are currently holding jobs that our existing laws mandate are illegal for them to have in the first place!
How can so many politicians and people in the media ignore and neglect innocent Americans who are suffering and having their lives ruined? The dire consequences for Americans due to the bad economy combined with rampant illegal immigration are horrific. The fact that their stories are not told and their voices are censored by the print media is even more horrifying.
For things to improve for Americans, we need our existing immigration laws, and all workplace and financial regulatory laws fully enforced. Those left in the media with a soul need to illuminate these problems and side with the American public before it is too late.
We need to know how much the influence the billions of dollars in perks, contributions, and payoffs coming into Washington, DC (See Bill and Hillary Clinton) from Global corporations and countries hostile to the United States like Saudi Arabia and China are responsible for these dastardly, illegal, and unconstitutional policies.
The American public is no longer in control of our national destiny. We are no longer self governed or secure. We are not being asked for our support, we are being told we will suffer in silence or face aggressive ridicule. We are being dictated to by politicians who's pockets are lined with the gold of powerful bankers and foreign nations.
We are now entering an even more dangerous phase where many Americans are losing all faith in the political process. There is dangerous talk in private conversations, and many are saying "America has already been conquered without a shot fired."
Perhaps America's most powerful enemies have discovered how to take us with a Trojan horse? No adversary would want to take us on militarily or do anything to awaken the ire of the American populace. Our own politicians, bureaucrats, and Wall Street leaders have already deeply wounded this nation more than Osama Bin Laden's attacks on 9/11.
Perhaps they have moved on America's Achilles heal of greed and corruption to incrementally reduce the American populace to such a desperate level surrounded by financially empowered subservient foreign workers that we cannot defend ourselves.
If this is the case and if these atrocities are not corrected soon by political means, may God help us endure, survive, or prevail against whatever evil our conquerors have planned for us next.

Obama and the jobs crisis

In the face of a record rise
in joblessness, the Obama administration continues to demonstrate its callous
indifference to the plight of millions of unemployed workers and their
families.
The
official unemployment rate shot up to 10.2 percent in October, the highest
level since 1983. Nearly 16 million people are jobless, an increase of 7
million since the recession began. If workers who have given up looking for
work and those forced to work part-time are added, the real unemployment rate
is 17.5 percent—or more than one out of every six workers in the US—the highest
rate since the Great Depression.
The
White House responded to the job figures by repeating its mantra that
employment is a “lagging indicator” in an otherwise recovering economy. While
acknowledging 10 percent was a “sobering number,” the president said, “History
tells us that job growth always lags behind economic growth.” The president
added complacently, “Although it will take time and it will take patience, I am
confident that we are moving in the right direction.”
The
suggestion that the unemployment trend will soon reverse itself is a lie. Most
economists now predict that double-digit unemployment will last for years.
Nevertheless, the administration has rejected any government-funded public
works program to hire the unemployed. The Washington Post recently noted
that White House officials reject the idea because it “does not produce
long-term value”; that is to say, it does not produce profits for big business.
The
issue of employment has long been at the center of economic and political life
in America. The last century saw New Deal public works projects, and “Full
Employment” programs, which, while woefully inadequate, were presented as an
effort to battle the scourge of mass unemployment. In the Obama administration
the question has become a non-issue.
This
inaction and indifference has produced a series of warnings from Obama’s
liberal supporters concerned over the explosive social and political
consequences of a worsening jobs crisis.
On
Tuesday, New York Times columnist Bob Herbert worried that “more and
more Americans are questioning [Obama’s] priorities, including millions that
went to the mat for him in last year’s election.” “The lack of jobs,” he
continued, “is fueling the nervousness, anxiety and full-blown anger that are
becoming increasing evident in the public at large.”
In a Washington
Post article, entitled, “Why won’t Obama give you a job?,” staff writer
Alec MacGillis complained that the administration has “studiously avoided
paying people to go to work” like the government did in the 1930s and 1970s.
“Engaging in more forthright job creation could invite some political pitfalls
(such as those constant accusations of socialism), but is double-digit
unemployment any less a political risk?”
Such
appeals fall on deaf ears. Obama’s disinterest is not a tactical mistake but
the result of the social and class interests the president and both political
parties defend.
While
doing nothing to relieve working people, the administration has spared no
expense and wasted no time in augmenting the wealth and power of the financial
oligarchy that rules America. It has handed trillions to Wall Street, driven GM
and Chrysler into bankruptcy to slash the wages of auto workers, and pushed the
restructuring of the health care system to gut Medicare and reduce medical
costs for big business. In foreign policy, the administration has squandered
hundreds of billions and the lives of thousands of soldiers in two colonial
wars to control the energy rich regions of world.
The
continued high level of joblessness and economic insecurity is a deliberate aim
of the administration. The threat of job losses is being used to break the
resistance of American workers to a permanent reduction in their living
standards and working conditions.
In
the July-September quarter, productivity grew at a 9.5 percent annual rate,
according to a government report. Even though working hours fell by a 5 percent
annual rate, output increased at a 4 percent rate. “So people working shorter
hours had to do the same amount of work as before, or more,” BusinessWeek
noted. “People who kept their jobs had to pick up the work of ex-colleagues” or
simply put in extra hours that weren’t counted in the statistics. As a result,
unit labor costs fell 3.6 percent over the past year, the largest decrease
since records were first kept in 1948.
This
increase in exploitation is central to the administration’s plans to
restructure American capitalism on behalf of the most powerful sections of the
financial elite. The ruling class is seeking to lift itself out of the ruins of
its own economic crisis by transforming the US into a cheap labor platform to
increase exports, and by carrying out a policy of austerity at home to make the
working class pay for the bailout of Wall Street.
If
the working class is to oppose this assault it must assert it own class
interests and develop a programmatic response to the economic crisis.
The
Socialist Equality Party insists that employment and decent living standards
must be guaranteed to all. The guiding principle of jobs policy must be to
protect the working population from destitution, and provide employment for the
purpose of raising the material and cultural level of the people, not profits
for the capitalists.
The
SEP calls for the sharing of available work among all workers with no loss of
pay. Every worker should be guaranteed 30 hours of work at 40 hours of pay,
with quality health and retirement benefits.
A multi-trillion
public works program must be launched to hire the unemployed and put them to
work to address pressing social needs. Projects must be launched to build
affordable housing, guarantee high quality health care and education, expand
public transportation and carry out other improvements in the physical and
social infrastructure.
To
secure the necessary resources, the grip of the financial aristocracy must be
broken by nationalizing the banks under public ownership and confiscating the
ill-gotten gains of the rich and super-rich. Capitalism is incapable of meeting
the social needs produced by its own calamity. It must be replaced with a
social system that does, socialism.
In
place of the anarchy and socially destructive “free market” system, the economy
must be reorganized on the basis of a democratic plan to meet the needs of
society as a whole, not private profit. The socialist transformation of the US
economy must be part of a globally planned economy, in which working people
control the wealth that they produce.
The
fight for this requires the building of a new political party of the working
class to oppose the twin parties of big business and fight for political power.
Such a party must be based on the fight for its political independence, internationalism
and the socialist transformation of society. This is aim of the Socialist
Equality Party.
