Sunday blasts rock Egypt: Islamist beasts at it again
The Islamofascist beasts are at it again. Today they blew up St. Mark's
Church in Alexandria, Egypt, where the Coptic leader, Pope Tawadros II, had
been attending Palm Sunday mass, killing 11. They slaughtered another 25 at St.
George's Church at mass in Tantos, Egypt.
Writing as catechist whose passion is to teach the children of
Beverly Hills all about the great St. Mark (did so last week) and the
magnificent St. George (earlier this year) and the glory of Palm Sunday
(yesterday) and the fascinating significance of Easter eggs among the Iranian,
Middle Eastern, Egyptian and Russian children (yesterday) ... it makes me sick.
I look at this news in disbelief.
What a heinous crime on one of the most majestic, wondrous and
highly anticipated spiritual days of the Christian calendar, Palm Sunday, one
where Egypt's diminishing Christian minority still commemorate in faith as they
have been commemorating for 2000 years. The Copts, who are the oldest
Christians, have a particular reverence for it. This attack is a direct assault
on Christianity and on God himself. Do I have to say this too? It's the work of
the devil.
It's beyond despicable, I feel such sadness for the good people of
Egypt who have had to endure this atrocity. Just as the chemical attack in
Syria shocked all of our consciences, this attack in Egypt does the same. It's
the work of beastly barbarians acting in the name of some anti-faith that has
nothing to do with the good Muslim people we all know. Yes, there are arguments
about this, but as I say, this is the work of dark Satanic forces no matter
what its perpetrators call themselves.
It calls for airstrikes with as much moral clarity as President
Trump's airstrikes on Syria earlier this week.
That's not practical, unfortunately, but it does show what kind of
impact the retaliatory response must have. President Trump just met with
President al-Sisi of Egypt this week. The two vowed to strengthen their
cooperation in eradicating terror. The Muslim-brotherhood-linked terrorists who
likely did this undoubtedly wanted to send a message to Egypt's Christians that
while airstrikes might work in Syria, Egypt's terrorists had no intention of
being daunted by them and the atrocities would continue because they considered
al-Sisi weak. They may actually have wanted to punish him for supporting Trump'
airstrikes.
Sisi is weak, and the society he leads is shot through with Muslim
Brotherhood sympathizers. That makes it very difficult to root out the
perpetrators and more important discourage future terror attacks.
The thing that would throw them for a loop would be the negation
of any of these assumptions or narratives. Can Sisi make them pay? Can Trump do
something unexpected o avenge the innocent in Egypt too? Can the U.S.
cooperation with Egypt become extremely effective, perhaps another Plan
Colombia, renamed as Plan Egypt? These are all questions for the fallout that
will inevitably occur in the wake of these shocking attack.
For now, it's impossible to not just mourn the good and holy
Egyptian victims.

The Point of No Return
The point of no return, the place of no more chances, the door that slams forever shut -- these are concepts that make us cover our ears and holler, “La-la-la-la.” The Western world in the 21st century works hard to mask final realities. A pregnancy used to be a point of no return, but now a woman can abort (same word used to end a mission -- how odd is that?) the inevitable, even just before birth. A student can fail a test, and then retake it and retake it. Some folks even freeze their dead bodies, counting on science to eventually provide a second chance. No deadline is really a deadline, no expectation must really be met, nothing is really due when it’s due. So very many of us just assume that every can can be kicked down the road to infinity, but those of us who still live in reality know better; sometimes it’s just permanently too late.
I’ve been pondering that quite a bit lately; I keep running into it in my Bible studies. Remember the Pharaoh of the Exodus? For the first five plagues Pharaoh hardens his own heart -- digs in his own heels and won’t let the people go. But by the time the sixth plague hits -- the plague of boils -- it’s too late. At that point “God hardens Pharaoh’s heart.” He uses up all his chances; God imposes this plague and the following four, “that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth.” Each time Pharaoh rejects Moses’ demands, he adds more callus to his soul until, by the plague of boils, he is so encrusted, so inflexible that he can’t make a positive choice. He passed the point of no return; after that, he, and his nation were doomed. Egypt has never really recovered.
Look at Western Europe -- Sweden, Germany, the UK. Their reproductive rates have dropped so low that immigration must have seemed a good way to deal with that problem. A society can run into a population dead end if, on the average, each person doesn’t reproduce him/herself. When the birth rate falls below two children per couple, eventually that society will implode; there will be an inadequate number of young people to do the work. So Europe imports Muslims from the Middle East and now they’ve lost parts of their countries and their culture. Can this be undone? The problem with the point of no return is that those involved never see it coming.
Now look at 2nd Thessalonians 2: 9,”The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” At some time in the future (quite possibly the near future) people will refuse truth until they can no longer do anything else. As I’ve watched the left stagger about in disbelief over the election of Donald Trump, I can’t help but remember this passage. “Strong delusion” is right. Russia? Really?! But here’s the sobering part: are all these people past that point of no return? Is our Western society permanently screwed? Could be.
I look around American society today and I see many dead ends looming. Education, for instance. With John Dewey (at the turn of last century) our school systems began a subtle change from attempting to produce independent, knowledgeable thinkers to generating non-thinking workers. During the late 60s the pace increased, curricula backed off the classics, and social engineering became a major thrust. God was banished from the classroom, and since He couldn’t be there, we had to find shortcuts, counterfeit ways to teach virtue: tolerance instead of real mercy; acceptance instead of righteousness; self-esteem instead of love and care. We erased purpose, discipline, and need. We’re several generations into this fiasco and even if DeVos manages to clean things up and institute vouchers and charter schools, where will we find well-educated, un-indoctrinated teachers to man those schools? How can we deprogram our colleges and our public schools? It may be too late.
Let’s go back to the Bible. Look at what happens in Matthew 12. Over and over in previous chapters we see Jesus healing the crippled, the blind, the mute, the demon possessed. Yet in the 12th chapter the Pharisees demand that He give them a sign that He is in fact the Christ. So He does another healing, and what do they say? “He does that in the power of Beelzebub.” After that, Jesus teaches only in parables and explains them only to his disciples. He cuts Israel off and later we discover that an irrevocable curse has been placed on Jerusalem; 40 years later the Romans lay siege to the holy city and over a million Jews die, Israel and Judah are no more, are scattered over the earth not to be reconnected with their land for 2,000 years. They each used up all their chances -- a point after which they would no longer be able to believe. And of course, once they were dead….
According to the gospels, on Passover of A.D. 30-something, Roman soldiers nailed an obscure rabbi from Nazareth to a cross propped between two thieves. One thief made the deadline just in time and secured his place in Paradise. The other missed it. Forever. Throughout the entire Bible there is one theme: God will fix the problem of sin -- our job is to believe that, to accept the free gift of salvation. God was able to offer this because His Son was willing to take on the punishment for that sin. Our part is to just receive the gift -- before death takes us. If a person misses that deadline, there is no going back. In the most permanent and irrevocable way imaginable, there is no going back. And we never know exactly what that due date is.

Muslim Anti-Christian Incitement Rises in Crisis-Torn Egypt

CAIRO (AFP) – For years, Egyptian Copt Michel Fahmy could hear a Muslim preacher invoking God’s wrath on Christians in sermons blared over loudspeakers from a mosque near his home.
The radical message, he says, is a reason for jihadist attacks on his minority like the twin bombings of churches on Sunday that killed 45 people.
Sunday’s attacks followed a December 11 suicide bombing in a Cairo church. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for all three.
“In mosques there are prayers to harm Christians,” says Fahmy, referring to Friday prayer sermons in which some preachers lead congregations in imprecations against Islam’s “enemies”.
“They incite to violence, youths are being filled with hatred against us and acting on it,” says the 50-year old who runs a souvenir shop in Cairo.
“It concerns us all. It leads to terrorism and to Christians being targeted,” he adds.
The shock from the Palm Sunday attacks was palpable on the faces of Coptic passersby doing their Holy Week shopping, as they passed by the wooden crucifixes and statues of Christ and Mary lining Fahmy’s store front.
“Society does not teach youths that Muslims and Copts are brothers and of the same nation, upbringing plays a big role” he says.
Some Copts point to the school system, where Muslims and Christians attend different religious classes.
“The problem starts at school where children are treated differently,” says Lillian Anis, 23, who works in a clothing store.
“In school some refused to speak to me because I was a Christian,” she adds.
Coptic Christians have also long complained of radical discourse in some mosques and on Islamic satellite channels.
-‘Incitement everywhere’-
Several Coptic Christians told AFP they had heard similar messages in Friday sermons or on Islamic television channels.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has repeatedly urged Cairo’s Al-Azhar, the prestigious Sunni Muslim institution, to “modernise religious discourse.”
Following Sunday’s bombing, he said a committee would be formed to tackle the issue.
Many of the Islamic satellite channels in Egypt that broadcast criticisms of Christians had been closed after the military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
The religious endowments ministry which oversees mosques has also cracked down on unlicensed preachers and mosques, and picks the weekly topic for Friday sermons nationwide, to ensure any potentially subversive political content is avoided.
Sectarian unrest in Egypt had increased since the 1970s when president Anwar Sadat was seen as empowering Islamists over his socialist opponents.
The violence usually revolved around rumours of Christian-Muslim love affairs or reports that Christians were building churches.
Jihadists have also targeted Christians before the recent bombings, with a suicide bomber blowing himself up outside a Coptic Church in Alexandria in 2011.
Some Islamist extremists look down on Christians as second-class citizens.
Law student Abram Anis says the extremists are “brainwashed by the religious incitement they hear against Christians everywhere.”
The incitement intensified after Morsi’s ouster, which led to a crackdown that killed hundreds of his supporters and unleashed a jihadist insurgency that has left hundreds of policemen and soldiers dead.
Morsi’s overthrow was announced by then army chief Sisi, flanked by Coptic Pope Tawadros II and Muslim religious leaders and politicians.
The Islamists singled out the Christians for blame, and following the deadly dispersal of pro-Morsi camps in Cairo on August 14, 2013 attacked dozens of Coptic properties across the country.
Sunday’s attacks brought home the dangers of the incitement to the Christian minority, which makes up about 10 percent of Egypt’s 90 million people.
