Is Trump's Tax Reform Trickle-Down Economics Part Two?

Trump’s latest suggested tax reforms would provide massive benefits to the ultra-wealthy and major business owners of the country, while providing modest benefits to middle-class and lower-class taxpayers. The philosophy behind the plan is a variation of “trickle-down” economics, which predicts that benefits for major businesses would increase hiring and economic growth, but is this a real variation of the original trickle-down economics plan that was the hallmark of Reagan’s presidency? And either way, can this work to bring economic growth to the nation?
Trump’s New Tax Reform
Trump’s new tax plan isn’t yet a complete piece of legislation, but the basics are already outlined. The most noticeable part of the plan is an intention to radically slash corporate taxes in several different forms, including a complete exemption of income earned overseas. Additionally, the plan would shrink the complexities of current individual tax rates to three to four major brackets (there are currently seven), and would expand both the standard tax deduction and child tax credits for all individuals in the United States.
The plan bears much similarity to the “Better Way” tax proposal, which was introduced in 2016 by House Republicans. Though its stated intention was to increase spending power of the middle class, the benefits of families making between $50,000 and $75,000 would amount to an increase of about 0.5 percent,or $270 per year. Plus, by 2025, about 99.6 percent of the plan’s benefits would be distributed to the top 1 percent of earners, with the intended effect being a “trickle down” of benefits, with more job opportunities, entrepreneurship opportunities, and economic growth for everyone.
There’s still much to be debated and decided. House Republicans are currently drafting a piece of tax legislation that draws on both the Better Way proposal and Trump’s recommended tax changes. The current draft of the legislation outlines tax brackets of 12, 25, and 35 percent, with a standard deduction nearly doubling to $24,000. The corporate tax rate would also be lowered from 35 percent to 20 percent, and the alternative minimum tax, which increases taxes for some upper-class individuals, would also be repealed.
Chances of Getting Passed
So will this new tax legislation be passed? It’s hard to say, since so many things still need to be decided. Individual tax bracket thresholds still need to be worked out, and it’s uncertain how much interest deductibility will be limited or whether there will be a fourth bracket for people making more than $410,000 a year. With the majority of Republicans trying to make the plan feasible and back it, there’s a good chance it could be passed, but almost all Democrats will likely attempt to obstruct the bill from becoming law.
The Merits of Trickle-Down Economics
There are some merits to trickle-down economics. To provide more opportunities to individuals struggling with debts and limited income, direct benefits aren’t always the best solution. Short-term fixes, like declaring bankruptcy or providing government handouts can temporarily relieve the problem, but it doesn’t necessarily create more jobs.
The original variation of trickle-down economics came from the Reagan administration back in the 1980s. The top tax rate was slashed significantly, from 70 percent to 28 percent, and the plan allowed for far more business deductions. During Reagan’s two terms as president, 16 million jobs were created, and most of the years of his presidency were marked with economic growth, including a whopping 7.3 percent increase in 1984.
However, it’s not clear that these tax cuts were directly responsible for job creation and economic growth; some argue that Reagan’s increased defense spending may have contributed, and by the end of his presidency, the national debt had skyrocketed. Conversely, Clinton’s presidency came with an increase in corporate taxes, and ended up creating even more jobs.
Still, there’s some limited evidence that trickle-down economics can work, if it’s coupled with a reasonable government spending plan, and a mechanism to control inflation.
Why Trump’s Plan Falls Short
Assume, for a moment, that trickle-down economics is the best way to grow the economy. Trump’s plan still falls short of that goal for a few main reasons:
  • The middle class is almost totally neglected. Trickle-down economics should favor business owners and job creators, but it also needs to give some support to the middle class. Trump’s plan almost completely neglects these American taxpayers.
  • Shareholders aren’t necessarily job creators. Corporate shareholders tend to benefit tremendously from this increased profitability, but shareholders tend to be ultra-wealthy, and aren’t necessarily job creators.
  • There’s no supplementary plan. Trump’s policy isn’t accompanied by a radical decrease in government spending, nor is there a supplementary plan to deal with inflation and unrestricted economic growth.
Trump’s plan isn’t the worst tax model that’s ever been considered, but it isn’t the powerful job creator or economic driver that it’s heralded to be. It may serve as a first draft for something better, but for now, Trump’s trickle-down economic policies are too unpredictable and too undefined to stand on their own.

America’s oligarchy: No money for opioid crisis, endless funds for corporate tax cuts

28 October 2017
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump proclaimed the opioid crisis, which killed some 64,000 people last year, a “public health emergency,” a move that, despite appeals from medical professionals and public health advocates, did not include one cent in additional funding.
More people died last year from drug overdoses than American soldiers were killed during the entire Vietnam War, with a staggering 175 people killed every day. Countless millions more have been affected, from friends and family members of addicts whose lives have been upended, to children born addicted to opioids.
Trump’s response to the opioid epidemic mirrors his administration’s response to every social crisis and disaster, such as the hurricanes that struck Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. The government has provided no meaningful federal aid to Puerto Rico, still suffering from widespread blackouts, while demanding it step up its payments to its Wall Street creditors.
But when it comes to funneling money to the US oligarchy, the White House and Congress are more than willing to oblige. Just hours before Trump’s announcement on the opioid crisis, the House of Representatives passed a budget bill that clears the way for Trump’s tax cut for corporations and the rich to be fast-tracked through Congress, for possible passage before Thanksgiving.
The plan, which would cost taxpayers some $5.8 trillion over the next ten years, would slash the corporate tax rate from the current 35 percent to 20 percent, eliminate the estate tax for multimillion-dollar inheritances, and slash rates for “repatriating” corporate profits held offshore.
These two measures present the outlook of the financial elite that dominates American society and controls both political parties: unlimited cash for the enrichment of the financial oligarchy and nothing to address the pressing social needs of the working population.
This bipartisan policy, which has been carried out for decades under the presidencies of Carter, Reagan, both Bushes, Clinton and Barack Obama before its radical escalation under Trump, has created a social catastrophe.
Its most direct manifestation is the persistent rise in mortality rates for the working class, which resulted in a fall in US life expectancy last year. In March, Princeton University economists Anne Case and Angus Deaton concluded that the run-up in mortality, particularly for working-class whites, is driven by what they define as “deaths of despair”—those due to drug overdoses, complications from alcohol and suicide.
In Capital, Marx’s study of the capitalist system, the founder of the modern socialist movement concluded that the “accumulation of wealth at one pole is…at the same time accumulation of misery, agony of toil slavery, ignorance, brutality, mental degradation, at the opposite pole.”
This statement is not only true, but empirically quantifiable. One study by epidemiologists Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett found a direct correlation between social inequality and a series of social ills, including homicides and violent crime, school achievement and dropout rates, teenage births, life expectancy and infant mortality, obesity, mental illness, and more.
Compared to other developed countries, the United States is off the charts on all measures. It is simultaneously the most unequal and the most socially distressed.
The inability and unwillingness of the political system to address any of the underlying causes of the social crisis gripping the United States is the direct product of the stranglehold over American society by the financial oligarchy, which ensures that the first and last priority is the protection and expansion of its wealth.
This reality was driven home in remarks by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who said earlier this month that the White House’s tax cuts had to pass because Wall Street would crash the stock market if they did not. “There is no question that the rally in the stock market has baked into it reasonably high expectations of us getting tax cuts and tax reform done,” he told Politico. “There’s no question in my mind that if we don’t get it done you’re going to see a reversal of a significant amount of these gains.”
The consequences of the Obama administration’s socially regressive policies were on display Thursday in a report by the Swiss bank UBS, which showed that the total wealth of the world’s billionaires shot up 17 percent in 2016, or $1 trillion, to a total of $6 trillion.
The US has more than a third of the world’s billionaires, and roughly half of all billionaire wealth, amounting to $2.8 trillion, according to the report.
One of those billionaires, Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon and owner of the Washington Post, became some $7 billion wealthier overnight on Thursday, becoming the world’s richest man, controlling $90 billion.
Bezos’ wealth is the outcome of the sweatshop-like conditions at the fulfillment centers operated by his company, which pays workers $10 per hour, subjects them to searches during the workday, and tracks their every move.
Despite the massive enrichment of the financial oligarchy documented by UBS’s report on the wealth of the world’s billionaires, the authors struck a worried note.
“We are now two years into the peak of the second Gilded Age,” Josef Stadler, UBS’s head of global ultra-high net worth, told the Guardian. “We’re at an inflection point” he said, “Wealth concentration is as high as in 1905… the question is to what extent is that sustainable and at what point will society intervene and strike back?”
Tellingly, the newspaper included in the article a painting depicting Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Russian Revolution, addressing workers in Petrograd in 1917. The clear implication is that 100 years after the Russian Revolution, which led to a reduction of social inequality all over the world amid a wave of social struggles that it triggered and encouraged, similar revolutionary uprisings are again on history’s agenda.
In response to the drive to even further subject the entire population under the yoke of America’s oligarchy, the working class must fight for its social interests with equal ruthlessness and determination. It must adopt and fight for a socialist program, including the expropriation of the wealth piled up by the ruling elite, to meet immediate and pressing social needs: to provide urgently needed medical care to all those affected by the addiction epidemic, to make whole all those whose lives have been upended by Hurricanes Maria, Harvey and Irma, and to ensure that all people are provided with employment and free, high-quality health care, education and housing.

Heroin is not produced in the United States. Every gram of heroin present in the United States provides unequivocal evidence of a failure of border security because every gram of heroin was smuggled into the United States. Indeed, this is precisely a point that Attorney General Jeff Sessions made during his appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on October 18, 2017 when he again raised the need to secure the U.S./Mexican border to protect American lives.

Immigration laws provide important weapons that can and must be used against transnational gangs, drug trafficking organizations and international terrorists and their organizations. This was made abundantly clear to me during my assignments with UID and then OCDETF. Yet this commonsense fact is willfully discounted and denied by politicians from both political parties and at all levels of government.
. . .
It is my contention that not unlike the way that DEA lost its authority to block the shipments of opiates when it is apparent that community safety is jeopardized, we have seen, for decades, parallel efforts to prevent the effective enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws and the securing of our nation’s borders in, what I have come to refer to as, Immigration Failure - By Design.

“Sanctuary cities” and now “sanctuary states” have crippled efforts to use immigration laws to combat violent transnational gangs, drug trafficking and human smuggling and even undermining national security.

On August 11, 2017 Fox News posted the incredible article, "Los Angeles Targets Contractors Who Might Work on Border Wall." The city of Los Angeles and the state of California have become sanctuaries and are now seeking to “blacklist” American companies that accept contracts from the federal government -- particularly when such companies have worked to help stem the flood of heroin and other dangerous drugs into the United States along with aliens engaged in criminal and/or terror-related activities.

Adios, California
A fifth-generation Californian laments his state’s ongoing economic collapse.
By Steve Baldwin
American Spectator, October 19, 2017
What’s clear is that the producers are leaving the state and the takers are coming in. Many of the takers are illegal aliens, now estimated to number over 2.6 million.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform estimates that California spends $22 billion on government services for illegal aliens, including welfare, education, Medicaid, and criminal justice system costs. Liberals claim they more than make that up with taxes paid, but that’s simply not true. It’s not even close. FAIR estimates illegal aliens in California contribute only $1.21 billion in tax revenue, which means they cost California $20.6 billion, or at least $1,800 per household.

Nonetheless, open border advocates, such as Facebook Chairman Mark Zuckerberg, claim illegal aliens are a net benefit to California with little evidence to support such an assertion. As the Center for Immigration Studies has documented, the vast majority of illegals are poor, uneducated, and with few skills. How does accepting millions of illegal aliens and then granting them access to dozens of welfare programs benefit California’s economy? If illegal aliens were contributing to the economy in any meaningful way, California, with its 2.6 million illegal aliens, would be booming.

Furthermore, the complexion of illegal aliens has changed with far more on welfare and committing crimes than those who entered the country in the 1980s.
Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute has testified before a Congressional committee that in 2004, 95% of all outstanding warrants for murder in Los Angeles were for illegal aliens; in 2000, 23% of all Los Angeles County jail inmates were illegal aliens and that in 1995, 60% of Los Angeles’s largest street gang, the 18th Street gang, were illegal aliens. Granted, those statistics are old, but if you talk to any California law enforcement officer, they will tell you it’s much worse today. The problem is that the Brown administration will not release any statewide data on illegal alien crimes. That would be insensitive. And now that California has declared itself a “sanctuary state,” there is little doubt this sends a message south of the border that will further escalate illegal immigration into the state.

Indeed, California goes out of its way to attract illegal aliens. The state has even created government programs that cater exclusively to illegal aliens. For example, the State Department of Motor Vehicles has offices that only process driver licenses for illegal aliens. With over a million illegal aliens now driving in California, the state felt compelled to help them avoid the long lines the rest of us must endure at the DMV.
And just recently, the state-funded University of California system announced it will spend $27 million on financial aid for illegal aliens. They’ve even taken out radio spots on stations all along the border, just to make sure other potential illegal border crossers hear about this program. I can’t afford college education for all my four sons, but my taxes will pay for illegals to get a college education.

Addictions: Sex, Alcohol, and Marijuana

Michelle Malkin has just published an exposé of child porn photographer Terry Richardson.  This is an important exposé of the creeping (and creepy) child endangerment racket sponsored by advertisers, fashion industry powers, and the celebrity culture.
The fashion corporation Condé Nast has knowingly employed child porn photographer Terry Richardson and spread his child-endangering photos to many millions of people, including an unknown number of gullible children.
The mass media now show clear signs of creeping child porn, often with hints and deniable photos, including the web landing pages of major corporations.
By normalizing the sexual exploitation of children who are much too young to make responsible decisions – it's hard enough for grown-ups – the mass media have been infiltrated by the illegal child porn racket.
It is relevant that Islam sometimes legitimizes adult males having sex with children of a lower-caste tribe, although it is strictly prohibited within the traditional Muslim family.  As a family-based culture, tribal Islam makes a major distinction between politically powerful families and powerless or infidel families.  In Afghanistan, the exploitation of young boys from low-prestige tribal families may be celebrated, but powerful families will also "honor-kill" daughters who are seduced by strangers.
From psychiatrist friends, I understand that prematurely sexualized children may be developmentally endangered.  As children, they are easily manipulated and abused, sometimes with the criminal collusion of parents and guardians.  The result can be a lifelong risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidal behavior, among other major disorders.  The ability to become attached to other adults in normal love and marriage relationships can also be badly affected.
Sexually abused children can also become abusers themselves, and psychoanalysts have long believed that they are psychologically endangered for life.  High risk for suicide is also associated with a history of sexual abuse in childhood.
In a period of widespread sexual escalation, "transgressive sexuality" and "transgressive violence" have become more and more normalized via the mass media.  I believe that the mass media constitute an increasing threat to normal child-raising and education.
The traditional legal age of consent for intercourse is meant to protect children until they can make an informed choice. Hypersexuality is now so endemic in the corrupt "Frankfurt School" culture, combined with the breakup of family protection, that young children are being "asked" to decide on their sexes.  This is plain abuse of the very limited understanding children have about sexuality.  Adults, including trained psychiatrists, still have a limited understanding of human sexuality. Young children are extremely vulnerable.
Facebook is now said to provide 72 different gender categories for its customers, including underage children who have no conception of the obsessive, compulsive, exploitive, and sometimes violent nature of adult sexuality.  Everything is rationalized as "love," but human beings have always shown a wild and dangerous variety of sexualities.
At the end of his term, Barack Hussein Obama openly ordered that local school districts around the country abandon their traditional "boys" and "girls" bathrooms.  Obama's executive order was a plainly unconstitutional and illegal abuse of power, and school districts that obeyed his edict should be held criminally liable.
There are reports that Obama himself may be addicted to hypersexuality, traditionally considered a danger to normal child-raising and education.  We make no judgment about the accuracy of those reports.
The attempt to choose one's gender is fraught with dangerous consequences, ranging from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which is endemic in modern culture, to high mortality and morbidity in sexually transmitted diseases.  The rise in reports of sexual slavery is also closely linked to this grossly irresponsible and traditionally criminal behavior.
Sexual abuse of children and ignorant and innocent young people has become "normalized" in our culture, as celebrities and power-abusers are being outed one after another.  Sexual exploitation correlates with the abuse of drugs, itself able to create entire generations of misery.  It should be noted that many adults are genetically vulnerable to alcohol addiction, which has long been a source of suffering and misery in European and Asian populations that carry the vulnerability gene.
The legalization of the selectively toxic component of marijuana, THC, is closely related.  The mass media promote both ignorance and a false sense of security about drugs of abuse.  Alcohol and marijuana can be used safely, but genetic vulnerabilities to those substances continue to destroy lives.  In Russia, where alcohol abuse is rife, the average male life expectancy is only 50 years, 25 years less than in other industrial countries.  The toll of family violence and many other dysfunctional behaviors cannot be counted.
The full marijuana plant has more than 80 known phytocannabinoids, with THC and CBD being the largest in quantity.  In teenage boys, THC has long been believed to trigger psychotic breaks, which then can lead to lifelong histories of psychosis.  I had a highly intelligent teenage friend who took all the illegal drugs available.  He has been periodically hospitalized for psychotic breaks since his teenage years and has never recovered fully.  He is unable to speak coherently.  A great talent and a potentially happy life were completely lost, and a lot of human potential was wasted.
This link to the free biomedical abstract database PubMed.gov shows 35 peer-reviewed journal abstracts on THC toxicity in triggering psychotic breaks, especially in teenagers.
Marijuana growers have consistently increased the hallucinogenic THC component of plant marijuana over decades.  As a result, nobody knows whether he is smoking high-THC or low-THC marijuana in "natural" form.  Highly bred marijuana is no longer "natural," any more than highly bred miniature terriers are natural dogs.
The second most common ingredient in wild marijuana is called cannabidiol (CBD), and it has highly promising health effects.  Most marijuana users have no scientific understanding of these points at all, but they are easy to read about in sources like Wikipedia.
Bottom line: THC can cause psychosis, especially in genetically vulnerable teenagers, males more than females.  CBD appears to be safe and beneficial, but it is not hallucinogenic.
In addition, any inhaled burned plant is carcinogenic to the lungs.  You could smoke toilet paper or plain wood and it would still harm your lungs.  For that reason, the use of bongs or "vaping" is a far safer way to take in tobacco or marijuana than are joints or cigarettes.  Burned carbon products of any kind pose a risk of lung cancer.
In synthetic form, THC is demonstrably dangerous in triggering psychotic episodes, but in smaller doses and mixed with other phytocannabinoids like CBD, it may be more tolerable.  But I would not bet my life on it.
The endocannabinoid system (the natural network of cannabis-like neural messengers and receptors) is complex and incompletely understood.  Like the endogenous opioid system, it has major benefits as well as risks.  People who use marijuana should understand the major differences among
1.   endocannabinoids (which are endogenous to the normal body),
2.   phytocannabinioids (from plant sources, which often include a range of toxic and beneficial molecules), and
3.   especially bred high-THC and low-CBD varieties of the marijuana, which is still called "marijuana" by sellers but may be toxic to vulnerable people.
These are all basic concepts.  They should be taught in elementary schools.
Marijuana is directly analogous to opium, brewed alcohol, and the coca plant.  All plant products are complex.  When humans refine or synthesize the plant molecules, the molecules are often toxic, especially at unnatural dosages, and in purer form, and for people with genetic vulnerabilities.  If you know any alcoholics, chances are that they carry the gene.
I have no doubt whatever that most media people are just as deeply into drugs, natural and artificial ones, as the rest of the trendy pop culture.  When they promote "safe" drugs, they are simply rationalizing their own destructive habits.  They may not understand that there are much more vulnerable populations for most psychoactive molecules, as we keep on finding out.
The bottom line is this: remember all those liberal fads?  Well, don't believe a word of them.  These people are deluded, and they run the mass media that can turn entire nations into destructive cults.
