Pelosi: Trump Treating Mexico Like an Enemy

(CNSNews.com) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said President Trump is wading into "dangerous territory" by treating Mexico as an enemy.
She not only opposes Trump's plan to impose escalating tariffs on Mexico -- she said he is doing it under emergency powers intended to punish U.S. foes.
It's not "policy," she told a news conference on Wednesday. "It's notion-mongering."

The White House released a statement last week announcing that tariffs will be imposed under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act, Pelosi noted. That law allows "sanctions of enemies in the face of unusual and extraordinary threats," she said. "Not to be imposing tariffs on our allies."
While Trump considers unchecked illegal immigration and blanket asylum-seeking as an unusual and extraordinary threat, Pelosi clearly does not.
Democrats (and Republicans) have done nothing to alleviate the crisis at the Southwest border.
Pelosi said the International Economic Emergency Powers Act is not intended to impose tariffs on allies such as Mexico, especially at a time when the U.S. is trying to negotiate a trade deal with that country.
"I'm just saying it's wrong," Pelosi continued. "I don't even think it rises to the level of policy. I think it's notion-mongering -- again. And I think it's really -- well, let's face what it is. It's a distraction from the Mueller report.
"And it served its purpose, right? Here we are -- here we are," she said, meaning she was taking questions on Mexico instead of other issues.
Pelosi also took issue with press reports that Democrats are divided or unsure on impeachment:
"Make no mistake, we know exactly what path we're on. We know exactly what actions we want to take. And while that may take more time than some people want it to take, I respect their impatience. It's a beautiful thing, and it's important to our country.
“Because there's great grief and sadness and pain in our country about the behavior of this president of the United States calling the Russian assault on our election a hoax; treating Mexico like an enemy...the list goes on and on.”
Pelosi said there is no controversy -- "we are on a path."
"This is a very, very strong team that we have working on this," she added.
