In 2014 the Russell Sage Foundation found that between 2003 and 2013, the median household net worth of those in the United States fell from $87,992 to $56,335—a drop of 36 percent. While the rich also saw their wealth drop during the recession, they are more than making that money back.
Between 2009 and 2012, 95 percent of all the income gains in the US went to the top 1 percent. This is the most distorted post-recession income gain on record.

Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh once expressed shock and disgust while touring run-down areas of the city. Now a resurfaced clip from 2018 shows the former mayor exclaiming “Whoa, you can smell the rats” and “Oh, my God, you can smell the dead animals.”
The video segment aired on Fox 45 last year and
featured the former mayor touring a neighborhood in East Baltimore. She seemed surprised by the conditions of the area.
“What the hell? We should just take all this shit down,” she said as she viewed the run-down buildings.
“Whoa, you can smell the rats,” she continued, adding “Whew, Jesus” and “Oh, my God, you can smell the dead animals.”
The backlash was swift. According to the
Baltimore Sun , many viewers were shocked that Pugh
seemed surprised by the conditions of certain areas of the city.
The Sun observed:
Commenters were divided in their response to the mayor’s words, some praising her candor, others asking what she planned to do about the city’s problems.
Others wanted to know why Pugh seemed so surprised to find such blight in the city she leads.
Said one: “There’s no way she didn’t know some parts of Baltimore looked like that.”
Pugh told the newspaper the poor conditions of the neighborhoods were contributing to the city’s decay.
“I walk the neighborhoods of our city regularly with my agency and department leaders, along with our police district commanders, to deal firsthand with the issues that undermine quality of life and rob our children of the future they deserve,” the former mayor, who resigned in May amid an ongoing federal corruption probe, told the outlet through a spokesperson.
Pugh’s resurfaced clip comes in the wake of President Trump’s remarks on Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and the condition of his Baltimore district. Trump blasted Cummings for “shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border” while the Maryland lawmaker’s Baltimore district is “far and more dangerous” and a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”
Prominent Democrats across the board decried Trump’s remarks. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) described it as a “racist” attack, Beto O’Rourke (D) called Trump the “most openly racist president we’ve had in modern history,” and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) called the tweets “ugly and racist.”
However, Baltimore’s problems have been well-documented and recognized by prominent politicians even prior to Trump. In 2016, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) spoke about Baltimore’s “poorest boroughs” and said that residents have “lifespans shorter than people living under dictatorship in North Korea.”
Trump tweeted about Sanders’ remarks Monday morning in hopes of demonstrating the left’s selective outrage.
“Crazy Bernie Sanders recently equated the City of Baltimore to a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY! Based on that statement, I assume that Bernie must now be labeled a Racist, just as a Republican would if he used that term and standard!” Trump tweeted in part:

Orkin declared Baltimore the number one bed bug infested city in the country in January.
It was the second year in a row that Baltimore topped the list of the Top 50 “Bed Bug Cities” in the United States.
“The number of bed bug infestations in the United States is still rising. They continue to invade our homes and businesses on a regular basis because they are not seasonal pests, and only need blood to survive,” Dr. Tim Husen, an entomologist who works for Orkin, one of the nation’s leading pest control companies, said in a statement released by the company that accompanied the announcement that Baltimore was once again the bed bug capital of the United States.
“The list is based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2016 – November 30, 2017,” the Orkin statement said.

A rat was spotted scurrying through a Baltimore reporter’s live shot as she reported on President Donald Trump’s tweets about the Democrat-controlled city’s growing rat infestation problem.
On Monday, FOX45 Maxine Streicher was reporting from west Baltimore’s Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood, where residents conceded that President Trump’s remarks about the city’s worsening conditions.
“We spoke with a lot of people today who call Sandtown home and are deeply offended by the president’s comments, but they will be the first to tell you that, yes, this area has its fair share of problems, and continues to struggle with crime and poverty,” Streicher reported.
The report featured Sandtown resident Darriel Harris, who acknowledged it’s true that the area — and other parts of Rep. Elijah Cummings’ (D-MD) 7th congressional district — is plagued by issues.
“There’s truth that there’s a bunch of problems here in this city,” said Harris. “There’s a bunch of problems in this district, there’s things that need to be addressed.”
A rat was seen running out of a dilapidated building as Streicher reported that residents believe President Trump should consider visiting the area to “take a look at things for himself.”
Over the weekend, President Trump eviscerated Cummings’ over Baltimore, saying his district’s conditions ae “far worse” than those inside immigrant detention facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA,” President Trump
wrote on Twitter Saturday. “As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”
Democrats immediately raced to denounce the president’s comments, calling them racist and insensitive, though lawmakers did not dispute his remarks with data dispelling Baltimore’s laundry list of problems.
“
Rep Cummings is a champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague,” House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA)
tweeted. “We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership.”
President Trump responded to the outcry, stating his comments directed at Cummings were in no way racist.
“[T]here is nothing wrong with bringing out the very obvious fact that Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore.” he

The president then said Democrats were playing the race card in an attempt to discredit his argument.
“The Democrats always play the Race Card, when in fact they have done so little for our Nation’s great African American people,” he
stated . “The Dems should stop wasting time on the Witch Hunt Hoax and start focusing on our Country!”

Baltimore FOP President: ‘Not Enough Officers’ to Respond to 911 Calls

The president of Baltimore’s Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge no. 3 urged police and residents on Tuesday to be careful as they go about their daily lives within the city.
“Baltimore is a dangerous city and the utmost care and caution should be taken as you go about your daily tasks,” Sgt. Michael Mancuso said.
His
comments come after Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison released a
plan on July 18 that aims to reduce crime in the area.
However, Mancuso said the city is short 500 police officers, 400 of whom are needed in the Patrol Division.
He commented:
The current deployment of Patrol Officers will not be able to, under any circumstances, implement the new crime plan as intended. As it stands now, there are not enough Officers to even respond to the number of calls to 911, not to mention the addition of micro-zones, community engagement, and proactive policing. The plan, as presented, is untenable.

reported Monday that Baltimore’s murder rate is set to outpace that of Central America’s most dangerous cities.
“Research by Princeton Policy Advisors’ Steven Kopits reveals that Baltimore has long had a higher murder rate than the most crime-ridden nations of Central America, where thousands of migrants flee from every year,” the report stated.
However, in 2009, the city
received $1.8 billion in stimulus funds via former president Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to help clean up the area.
“The Obama administration allocated $1.8 billion of its 2009 stimulus to Baltimore, including $26.5 million to address crime prevention, $26 million to revamp abandoned properties, and $9.5 million to address homelessness,” Breitbart News reported.
Michelle, a Baltimore resident, made the news Saturday after she
agreed with President Trump’s recent criticisms of Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) regarding the current state of his district.
The Baltimore resident said Cummings “hasn’t done anything” for the people in her area.
“We’re hungry. We need a place to stay,” she commented. “We feel like we’re in a ‘concentration camp,’ and it’s just sad. People worried more about them [illegal immigrants] than his own people. It’s just crazy.”

The Baltimore Sun published an op-ed on Nov. 9, 2016 — the day Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2016 presidential election — in which the author called for Baltimore to be declared a disaster, and rebuilt.
The
op-ed , by Sean Kennedy, reads in part:
Donald J. Trump is known for his hyperbole, but not all of his ideas are a stretch. Our inner cities are a “disaster,” as he said in the final presidential debate — and they should be officially declared so.
Mr. Trump said on the campaign trail that he would “empower cities and states to seek a federal disaster designation for blighted communities in order to initiate the rebuilding of vital infrastructure, the demolition of abandoned properties and the increased presence of law enforcement.” Now that he’s captured the presidency, let’s hope he follows through.
The idea is radical, revolutionary and just what urban America needs: a federal disaster declaration for our most impoverished neighborhoods hard hit by crime, urban blight and economic malaise.
