Jeff Bezos reportedly buys 4th condo in NYC for $16 million and now owns nearly $100 million in property in one building alone
ahartmans@businessinsider.com (Avery Hartmans)
- Bezos' purchase would be on top of the $80 million worth of real estate he already owns in the same building, 212 Fifth Avenue, which overlooks Madison Square Park.
- Bezos reportedly plans to combine the units to create one massive penthouse, according to the Post.
- Earlier this year, Bezos purchased a $165 million estate in Beverly Hills, California. He also owns property in Seattle, Texas, and four other condos in New York.
It appears that Jeff Bezos has added to his real estate portfolio once again.
According to a report from the New York Post's Jennifer Gould Keil, the Amazon CEO paid $16 million for a three-bedroom unit at 212 Fifth Avenue. Bezos isn't listed on the deed — the unit was sold to a holding company, Madison Square Park LLC. The holding company is represented by Seattle-based law firm Perkins Coie, which counts Amazon as a client. The Real Deal also confirmed that Bezos is the unnamed buyer.
A spokesperson for Bezos did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
Bezos already owns $80 million worth of real estate in 212 Fifth Avenue: a penthouse unit and two apartments below it. By purchasing the new unit, Bezos now owns nearly $100 million worth of real estate in a single building overlooking New York's Madison Square Park.
Bezos purchased the other three units last year after reportedly hunting for a home in New York "for months." The purchase reportedly included a three-floor penthouse, a private elevator, and 12 bedrooms, while the building itself has a fitness center, a golf simulator, a game room, and a movie-screening room, according to the property's website.
Bezos' eventual goal is to combine the units into a single massive dream home. Building permits for the units were reportedly filed on Bezos' behalf last fall, but according to the Post, construction hasn't started on the condos yet.
Bezos also owns four condos in a building on Manhattan's Upper West Side that overlooks Central Park, as well as a $165 million estate in Beverly Hills, California, a Washington, D.C., mansion, and property in Seattle and Texas.

Even though Piketty’s book Capital in the 21st
Century was a huge bestseller, few else seemed to pay much
attention to the most glamorous and intriguing idea in the whole book. I,
however, immediately started thinking about how we could find this wealth. For
example, what about using Google Earth to look for evidence of palatial
estates? For example, golf courses are instantly recognizable from the air, so
personal golf courses are readily visible on Google.

What Does Jeff Bezos'
$165 Million House Purchase Tell Us About Thomas Piketty's Theory of Hidden Old
Money?

As I’ve often mentioned,
one of my favorite perhaps crackpot but also perhaps legit theories is French
leftist economist Thomas Piketty’s claim that his famous equation r >
g proves that the Forbes Magazine
lists of billionaires have to be wrong because there must
be far more old money billionaires, while the Forbes lists
are dominated by fairly recent wealth. Piketty suspects there are vast hidden
fortunes passed down through the generations that Forbes isn’t
finding.
Here’s a NYT article on
Jeff Bezos spending $165 million on a Beverly Hills estate plus nearby 9 digit
properties that’s relevant to the Piketty Theory: Just about everybody involved
in owning these properties is famous, most track their fortunes back no further
than the 20th Century, backyard golf courses seem to be a dying breed, and, by
implication, only trashy Russian oligarchs really like all the steel and glass
boxes that have been built on spec in the Hollywood Hills in recent years.
The
Amazon leader reached a deal for the Warner Estate in Beverly Hills with David
Geffen, who has owned it since 1990.

Candace Jackson, Feb. 14, 2020
The
national housing market has cooled, but in Los Angeles the ultrarich are still
shattering price records. An heiress to the Formula One racing empire sold her
home for $119.75 million last July. In December, Lachlan Murdoch paid $150
million for a home in Bel Air.
The
latest buyer at the top: Jeff Bezos, the Amazon chief and world’s richest
person.
Setting
a new high for a home sold in California, Mr. Bezos is paying $165 million for
a Beverly Hills estate owned by David Geffen, the media mogul and co-founder of
DreamWorks, according to two people familiar with the purchase.
That
wasn’t all. In a separate transaction, Bezos Expeditions, which oversees The
Washington Post and Mr. Bezos’ charitable foundation, is buying 120 undeveloped
acres in Beverly Hills for $90 million, the two people said. The land was put
on the market for $150 million in 2018 by the estate of Paul Allen, the
Microsoft co-founder, who died that year….
The
superrich are spending huge amounts for some of California’s premier
properties. Mr. Murdoch, chief executive of the Fox Corporation, bought
Chartwell, which TV viewers of a certain age may remember as the Clampetts’
home in “The Beverly Hillbillies.” Petra Ecclestone, whose father, Bernie
Ecclestone, ran Formula One for more than 40 years, sold the Manor. The
television producer Aaron Spelling had built the mansion, in the city’s Holmby
Hills neighborhood, in 1988.
For
Mr. Bezos, it was the Warner Estate, which was designed in the 1930s for Jack
Warner, the president of the Warner Bros. film studio. The roughly
13,000-square-foot home is considered one of the premier mansions built during
Hollywood’s golden era.
… The
Georgian Revival-style estate was designed for hosting the Warners’ elaborate
parties, with guests like Albert Einstein and Howard Hughes.
The
property also included a nine-hole golf course, which Mr. Geffen removed when
he renovated the grounds, Mr. Hyland said in an interview.
David Geffen doesn’t
like golf. I wonder why?
A
home next door also had a nine-hole course, allowing the Warners and their
neighbors to play 18 holes right in the middle of Beverly Hills.
That was the Harold
Lloyd Estate, built by the silent movie comedy star. It’s now owned by
financier Ron Burkle, who likes to buy and restore houses with a lot of
entertainment industry history, such as Bob Hope’s houses in Toluca Lake and
Palm Springs.
Both backyard golf
courses are no longer visible on aerial photos. My estimate is that the number
of personal golf courses in Southern California is around only a half dozen —
e.g., Oracle founder Larry Ellison is in the news for announcing a Trump
fundraiser at his personal golf course in the Palm Springs area. There’s one
out in some canyons near Zuma Beach whose owner is unknown to me, but most of
the others were built by well-known individuals: Bob Hope, Walter Annenberg,
Jerry Perenchio and the like.
The
Warner Estate, whose sale to Mr. Bezos was reported earlier by The Wall Street
Journal, stands out from the speculatively built glass-box homes that have
flooded the local market…. “Everybody today would like to see classical
architecture,” Mr. Hyland said. “They want substance. They want acreage.” He
said he and his business partner, Rick Hilton, had the most expensive current
listing in the area, the $225 million Conrad Hilton estate, which is on eight
and a half acres in Bel Air.
So not much evidence for
Hidden Old Money from the Beverly Hills real estate market. But where does the
Hidden Old Money congregate? And let’s see the aerial photos!
By the way, showing the
utility of aerial photos for identifying the rich, another Beverly Hills house
has a backyard full size basketball court decked out in the colors of the
Detroit Pistons. So I looked up the owner of the Pistons. He’s an interesting
first generation self-made man, a Greek-Lebanese Catholic born Tewfiq Georgious
in Nazareth who grew up in Michigan, then made it big in business in Los
Angeles.

Jeff Bezos threw a lavish party at his finally completed Washington DC mansion attended by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and actor Ben Stiller.
The Amazon founder purchased the $23million Washington mansion in 2016 and it underwent three years of renovations and construction. The 27,000-square-foot home is tucked in the city's wealthy Kalorama district near the residences of former President Barack Obama and the Trump-Kushner family.
Bezos invited his high-flying friends to his home after they attended the annual, exclusive Alafalfa Club Dinner in DC.
Guests arrived in elegant suits and floor-length dresses for the swanky affair Saturday evening, but Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez were nowhere to be seen at the entrance to the 11-bedroom, 25-bathroom grand mansion.

Not only did Bezos expand his political circle but he also invited Microsoft founder Bill Gates to the event as well as actor Ben Stiller, who was Sen. Romney's guest to the Alfalfa dinner.
Many guests were seen wearing a special gold medallions around their neck designating them as Alfalfa Club members.

Also in attendance at Bezos' party were United States Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, businessman David Rubeinstein, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, CBS Evening News anchor Norah O'Donnell, Case Foundation CEO Jean Case and husband AOL founder Steve Case, Politico founder Robert Allbritton, Barbie Allbritton, former House Speaker Paul Ryan and wife Janna, former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney and wife Good Morning America correspondent Claire Shipman, former Defense for Public Affairs Geoff Morrell, and Hilton president Chris Nassetta, according to Politico.
Lauren Sanchez also attended her beau's lavish soiree but neither she nor Bezos were spotted by cameras after entering a gated area in their new estate. The party comes on the heels of a stark revelation in their text-leaking scandal.
On Friday federal prosecutors in Manhattan revealed they have evidence indicating that Bezos' girlfriend Sanchez provided dirty text messages with Bezos to her brother that he then sold to the National Enquirer for an explosive story on the Amazon founder's affair.
Prosecutors have obtained documents including a May 10, 2018 text message sent from the phone of Bezos' girlfriend Lauren Sanchez to her brother Michael Sanchez, containing her intimates texts with Bezos, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The Journal said it had reviewed the text messages as well as a $200,000 payment Michael Sanchez received from the Enquirer under an October 2018 contract.

Plans: This diagram of the property shows the building and gardens which were described as 'beautiful' and 'astonishing' by people who have seen them
Addition: Floor plans for the property include a media room with 'tiered seating'. Bezos will use the property as an East Coast base to go with other properties around the country
Detailed: One construction expert remarked that the project appeared to be 'in the home stretch' with work now focusing on details such as light fittings
Extensive: The work is turning the property into Washington's largest home, with 11 bedrooms, 25 bathrooms, five living rooms, two kitchens and two libraries
Prosecutors obtained the documents in an ongoing investigation into Bezos' allegation that the Enquirer tried to extort him by threatening to publish his nude pictures, as well as whether his phone was hacked. Bezos himself has long pushed the suggestion that Saudi Arabia was involved as the Enquirer's source.
In addition to the photo and text-leaking scandal, Bezos' investigators said this week that the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia had sent malicious code in a WhatsApp message that compromised the cell phone of Bezos.
But, Saudi Arabia denies hacking Bezos' phone.
The Enquirer claims that Michael Sanchez was their source for the bombshell story that revealed Bezos' affair, while Michael Sanchez denies he had anything to do with it.

Jeff Bezos Buys a Fourth Apartment in a Luxe Manhattan Building
It seems the Amazon CEO has plans to create a multi-floor dream home overlooking Madison Square Park
By Joyce Chen
Jeff Bezos’s latest real estate purchase may just be the missing piece of the puzzle in his plan to create an over-the-top dream house in Manhattan. The Amazon CEO recently dropped $16 million for a three-bedroom unit in an apartment building overlooking Madison Square Park, the New York Post reports. This brings the grand total of his real estate holdings in the Fifth Avenue skyscraper to $96 million. He purchased three apartment units there last June, totaling $80 million and 17,000 square feet. That purchase included a penthouse with five bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms, plus the two adjacent units situated on the floor below it. His newest apartment on the premises is adjacent to the rest. It is unclear how exactly he plans to combine the homes, or how many square feet the latest purchase will add to the grand total, but the Post reports that building permits were filed on Bezos’s behalf last fall to at very least combine the three units he purchased in bulk last summer.

The multibillionaire, who is the wealthiest person in the world, with a net worth of more than $125 billion, already owns the largest house in Washington, D.C., which he purchased for $23 million in early 2017. (The megamansion measures a mind-boggling 27,000 square feet, with 11 bedrooms, 25 bathrooms, five living rooms, five staircases, three kitchens, two libraries, two workout rooms, two elevators, and a huge ballroom. Bezos is reportedly looking to sink an addition $12 million into renovations.) Meanwhile, earlier this year, the internet mogul pulled out from a real estate deal to buy a 120-acre lot in Beverly Hills that previously belonged to Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen. In addition to his properties in New York and Washington, D.C., Bezos also has homes in California, Texas, and Washington state.
