I have an expression I present to
my economics classes. It has a certain impact: the US is a third world nation, we just haven’t realized
it yet. Our emerging status isn’t obvious. Products remain relatively cheap (energy
excluded) despite the falling value of the dollar against most foreign
currencies. But there are real signs.
Most Americans who are paying
attention have noticed a long term decline in manufacturing jobs in the US.
Quarter after quarter, year after year, the government reports job gains, but
those gains are primarily in service industries: health care (we’re not talking
doctors, here), restaurants and bars, retail trade and, until recently,
construction. A close examination of the figures will usually reveal a decline
in manufacturing jobs. This is not an accident.
The loss of American manufacturing
jobs is largely the result of American firms moving their manufacturing off
shore, to labor markets in which workers earn a tiny fraction of US wages. Once
the globalization process began in earnest, it became impossible for many
American firms to maintain US production even if the wished to. Keeping jobs
here would render these firm uncompetitive as the rivals moved to take
advantage of peasant wages in places like China , India and other developing
nations.
Over the past 30 years, American
manufacturing has moved offshore at an accelerating rate. Walk through any big
box store (or any other for that matter) and look where things are made.
Overwhelmingly, it’s China or other developing nations. The process is
inexorable. With “Globalization” we have opened the world’s borders to free
trade in goods and services. On the one hand, this has presented opportunities
for US manufacturers to expand profits by shifting production to countries where
wages are a tiny fraction of those in the United States. Goods made abroad can
be sold at an attractive price in the US while still allowing producers to
increase the difference between price and total cost, otherwise known a profit.
Those companies with a sense of national pride and identity are, finally,
forced to move some or all of their production offshore in order to survive.
Aside from the short term charm of
finding bargains on the shopping rack, there are serious consequences here. Let’s
look them. The first problem is the disappearance of the American “living
wage”. The only reason Americans have managed to avoid confronting their
declining real income per capita it by increasing the number of family members
working. There was a time, in American mythology at least, when people accepted
that one working family member could support 4 people at a reasonable standard
of living. This was the vision of America Nixon and Krushchev debated,
famously, at an exhibit of the postulated US living standards presented in the
Soviet Union. This was the Ozzie and Harriet version of American life which was
broadcast to the world and to the home audience as standard: the norm. It
wasn’t, of course, but it was close enough to what middle America saw around
them to be at least plausible. The incomes implicit in that early 1960’s view
of American life may have improved until the early 1970’s (there was a war
going on and war is always good for employment and incomes), but since that
time statistics indicate that the real (inflation adjusted) incomes of American
working people have actually declined.
Already, young people are
finding no jobs, or a universe of job opportunities which pay poverty wages¼ This
is a problem that is not going away. It’s going to get worse.
A revealing example of this is the
February 12th 2008 decision by General Motors to offer buyouts to all 74,000
union hourly workers. This followed closely a similar action by Ford. This
would include severance packages for all employees, varying in terms depending
on years of service. Relatively new employee’s would get a lump sum payment for
leaving and forfeiting all health and post retirement benefits. The new
workers, waiting in the wings, will earn on average $16 and hour as opposed to
the current average $28 an hour. That rounds to a 43% reduction in income, and
little is revealed about what benefits these new workers will receive, or
whether or not the will have union representation—though I expect they will.
Here is an example of a central, traditional area of American employment were
workers are moving from an average of $58,240 pre‑tax per year to $33,280 pre‑tax.
Obviously, these people have a surprising readjustment to make. They’re just
the prominent tip of the iceberg. Already, young people are finding no jobs, or
a universe of job opportunities which pay poverty wages. It’s why so many young
workers (and unemployed youngsters) live at home
This is a problem that is not going
away. It’s going to get worse. Several convergent forces are leading to US
economic destabilization. One force driving this tragedy is free trade, also
called globalization. One of the more profound spokesmen on this subject is
Paul Craig Roberts an economist in the Reagan Administration who has written
extensively on the topic and lends support to the argument that globalization
is on the verge of ruining the US economy.

As Phyllis Schlafly reveals in this issue of
Whistleblower: "This CFR document asserts that President Bush, Mexican

Why have America's politicians –
of both major parties – allowed the illegal alien invasion of this nation to
continue for the last 30 years unabated? With al-Qaida and allied terrorists
promising to annihilate major U.S. cities with nuclear weapons, with some big-city hospital emergency rooms
near closure due to the crush of so many illegals, with the rapid spread
throughout the U.S. of MS-13, the super-violent illegal alien gang – with
all this and more, why do U.S. officials choose to ignore the laws of the land
and the will of the people to pursue, instead, policies of open borders and lax

In Arizona and California, Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE) scratched the surface of criminal overspill into the
US from Mexico when they raided two dwellings to save over a hundred illegal

segments of their airliner manufacturing to other countries. The finished sub‑assemblies

Highly skilled professionals, such as radiologists (medical doctors
specializing in interpreting X‑rays) are finding their work sent via high speed
communications to much lower paid radiologists in places like India. The effect
of allowing the unimpeded flow of capital and goods and services between
nations is precisely the same as allowing the free movement of people across
borders. In the end, we will experience a relative equalization of wages, world
wide. Obviously, those in the current Third World will find wages improving.
With billions of impoverished workers waiting in the “wings”, US workers will
find their wage declines much more starting and profound than the increases
granted to the struggling poor of the developing world.

The Betrayal of America

Just before the 2006 election,
I predicted (among other things) that without the slim Republican majority in
the House of Representatives, amnesty for illegal immigrants would soon become
a reality. "If Democrats take control of the House," I wrote,
"that barrier will vanish like mist, and the Democrats will have a flood
of uneducated, largely ignorant new low-class workers to turn into good little
Democrat voters, all demanding a piece of the government pie."Six months
later, here comes the amnesty. Although the remaining Republicans managed to
write increased border security measures into the bill, no one is naive enough
to think they won't be simply ignored, just as they were in 1986. The
"one-time" amnesty Ronald Reagan signed was also supposed to result
in tighter border controls... which the Democrat-controlled Congress simply
"forgot" to fund. So twenty-one years later, here we are again:
facing another "one-time" amnesty, with promises of more border
security we know will not be honored. This compromise will cut the 850-mile
border fence the President signed into law just before the 2006 elections -- of
which only two miles have yet been built -- to 370 or so miles. Anyone care to
place bets on how much of even that shortened fence will ever exist in reality?
With the Iranian terrorist group Hizballah building a massive base in South
America from which to attack the US, how can we afford not to build that
fence?The main point of the bill (much of which has not yet even been written)
is to grant every single illegal alien currently in America a visa, allowing
them to stay despite the fact that they broke the law to get here and violate
numerous laws every day that they remain. I wonder when Congress will do the
same for other categories of criminal. For instance, will car thieves be
granted a "path to ownership" which allows them to keep their
unlawfully-obtained vehicles? If so, I'm going to feel awfully stupid for saving
up money to put down on a new car... the same way millions of people who are
patiently waiting for permission to emigrate to the United States must feel as
though they just received a boot to the face for respecting our laws. If
lawbreakers are allowed to keep what they obtained by criminal means, then no
matter what you may call it, it's an amnesty. Period. But we have to
"bring millions of people out of the shadows," we are told by people
such as Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA). What shadows? Remember those huge illegal
immigration rallies last year, in which hundreds of thousands of criminals --
along with their supporters and enablers -- marched through the streets of
major US cities protesting the audacity of people who thought we should enforce
our own laws? The only "shadows" I saw were cast by all the Mexican
flags and "This is OUR continent, not YOURS" signs. There were other
signs as well, but many of them were in Spanish, so I couldn't read them. This
amnesty proposal will result in a huge influx of uneducated and unskilled
immigrants over the next decade, too fast for our culture to absorb them. Food
and services will increase in price, as the artificially-depressed wages paid
under the table to those who had no choice but to accept them will have to
rise. It will also bring in millions of new illegal immigrants, expecting yet
another "one-time" amnesty a few years down the road. Many of these
people will demand free medical care, welfare, and other government services.
And which party will promise them all the freebies they could want? By agreeing
to this compromise, the Republicans will doom their own party and marginalize
Conservatives for years, ensuring a one-party Socialist state for at least a
generation. The only slim chance to stop this abomination of a bill is for
every person who cares about America's future to write, call, email and send
smoke signals to our Senators and our Representatives, demanding that they vote
against this amnesty proposal. Let them know that you will not support or vote
for any politician who betrays America in this way. It's the only power we
have, and if we don't use it... we will lose it.

Colorado Gives Illegal Immigrants Unemployment Benefits

Colorado pays illegal immigrants unemployment insurance
because a director at the state agency that cuts the checks eliminated a key
tool designed to prevent payments from going to unqualified residents.
As a result the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment
(CDLE) regularly makes unemployment insurance payments to illegal aliens and
other citizens who don’t qualify for the taxpayer-funded benefit. The story was
made public after an investigative news organization obtained internal
electronic mail showing that a high-ranking official ordered the agency to stop
using a software control implemented to screen applicants’ immigration status.
The CDLE’s unemployment director (Mike Cullen) actually
issued an official work order in early 2009 to shut the system down. The order,
which was given “top priority,” forced the agency’s information technology
department to reset the software so that it stopped questioning the immigration
status of applicants.
Since the change was implemented, any residency or
citizenship related questions routinely asked of those filing for unemployment
benefits have been ignored by the computer system. The move violates a 2006
state law that mandates that certain government benefits—including unemployment
insurance—be denied to illegal immigrants.
A few days after the story hit the internet, the head of the
CDLE said that state lawmakers were actually notified earlier this year that
the department shut down the immigration screening tool because it was causing
a backlog. With a record number of unemployment claims, the screening tool was
“holding everything up,” according to the agency’s director.
It appears that many at the agency knew they were violating
state law. In fact, some CDLE employees questioned the legality of suspending
the program in emails obtained by the reporter who broke the story. One flat
out asked “is this legal?” Another admitted that not screening for immigration
status would “disable” the state law that specifically requires it. Several
lawmakers have demanded an investigation.

taken by illegal workers,” said Representative Lamar Smith of

need and deserve rather than fail to enforce immigration laws.”
“The principal beneficiaries of our current
immigration policy are affluent Americans who hire immigrants at substandard
wages for low-end work. Harvard economist George Borjas estimates that American
workers lose $190 billion annually in depressed wages caused by the constant
flooding of the labor market at the low-wage end.” Christian Science Monitor
