Growing immigration gang: Members of the Senate’s Gang of Eight are open to amending their immigration system overhaul bill but are united in killing any bad amendments that could lead to the legislation's defeat.
“We expect and welcome suggested improvements to the bill by our colleagues,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said at a press conference Thursday. “We will oppose only those amendments that are intended to prevent a comprehensive solution from passing.”
Business groups want to increase the number of visas for immigrant workers, while labor unions want to speed up the path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.
The 844-page bill includes a slew of new regulations and add more layers to the federal bureaucracy.
A group of industry leaders from the National Restaurant Association will meet with White House officials on Friday to lay out their priorities that include a pathway to citizenship, a national employment verification system and improving border security.
“What we're seeing is our Congress and national leadership dismantling our laws by not enforcing them. Lawlessness becomes the norm, just like Third World corruption. Illegal aliens now have more rights and privileges than Americans. If you are an illegal alien, you can drive a car without a driver's license or insurance. You may obtain medical care without paying. You may work without paying taxes. Your children enjoy free education at the expense of taxpaying Americans.”

“I’m afraid we’ll have a
deal like in 1986 where the amnesty provisions become law and the enforcement
doesn’t occur,” Sessions said Wednesday on the Senate floor. “We don’t have the
kind of commitment to law enforcement at this point that gives the American
people the confidence that we’re moving on the right path. So this is no sure
thing.”

e-verify system, child tax credits, ending appropriations to “sanctuary cities”
and even changing the requirements of U.S. citizenship. Currently, a baby
simply needs to be born in the United States to become a citizen, but Vitter
said one of his bills would require that at least one parent be a U.S. citizen.
