'Family Units' Apprehended at U.S.-Mexico Border Up 412% in 2014

(CNSNews.com) – Statistics from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveal that for fiscal year 2014 (Oct. 1, 2013 to Aug. 31, 2014) the number of "family units" -- parent and child combinations -- that have been apprehended at the Southwest border is up 412 percent from the number of family units taken into custody in fiscal year 2013.

 

In fiscal year 2013 (Oct. 1, 2012 to Aug. 31, 2013), CBP apprehended 12,908 people who come illegally across the U.S. border as a family unit. In fiscal year 2014, the total was 66,142 – or a 412 percent increase.

CNSNews.com asked Jenny Burke, deputy director for media with Customs and Border Protection, the follow question via email:
“For the purposes of these statistics, how does CBP define ‘family unit?’ "Both adults and children,” he said.

The statistics show that most of those family units crossed the border in the Rio Grande Sector in Texas or a 500 percent increase in family units crossing -- 6,002 family units in 2013 and 50,619 family units in 2014.

The Del Rio Sector in Texas also had a 500 percent increase – 591 family units in fiscal year 2012 to 4,839 in fiscal year 2014.

The CBP website states that most of the Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) and family units represented by these statistics are from Central America.

The statistics show that 88 percent more UACs crossed into the United States at the Southwest border in 2014 – 35,209 in fiscal year 2013 and 66,127 in fiscal year 2014.
