Trump reassures Dreamers they don't have to worry about immigration status before DACA ends
President Trump sought to reassure Dreamers on Thursday that they shouldn't worry about their immigration status in the six months before the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program ends.
"For all of those (DACA) that are concerned about your status during the 6 month period, you have nothing to worry about - No action!" Trump tweeted Thursday.
According to Politico, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called the president and asked him to tweet the message to Dreamers.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday that DACA would end by March 5, 2018, giving Congress a six-month window to pass legislation dealing with Dreamers, the name given to those who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children and are protected from deportation under the program.
DACA currently provides legal protections for roughly 800,000 illegal immigrants between the ages of 15 and 36. According to the Department of Homeland Security, DACA recipients whose permits expire between now and March 5, 2018, have to apply for a renewal by Oct. 5. The agency said 200,000 Dreamers will see their legal status expire by the end of the year if they don't reapply by that deadline.
The president did not elaborate on what would happen to DACA recipients after the six-month window closes.
