Democrats Increasingly Worried About Virginia Governor’s Race

Democrats across the nation continue to worry about the Virginia governor’s race as the polls remain tight between Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph Northam.
Democrats continue to lag behind Republicans in fundraising ahead of the 2018 midterm election. Democrats continue to worry about what a potential loss for Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam against Republican Ed Gillespie on November 7 could mean for the midterm election.
Susan Swecker, the chairwoman of the Democratic party of Virginia, explained, “We’re Ground Zero. All eyes are on us. I can understand that because last year broke my heart.”
Democrats amped up the Virginia governor’s race by bringing in former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden. Obama, at his first public campaign rally since leaving office, said that “democracy is at stake” in the Virginia gubernatorial race.
Other democratic operatives believe that Democrats have a branding problem, one that makes it more difficult to rally middle-class and rural voters who flocked to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
Ken Martin, the chairman of Minnesota’s Democratic Farmer-Labor Party, charged, “From a branding perspective, we have a huge problem. It was the biggest challenge for us in the last year — and our biggest mistake was uniting around ‘Stop Trump.’”
Defeat could prompt increased tension between the Democratic Party’s establishment and the progressive activists. Northam, who was backed by most of Virginia’s Democratic establishment, beat the Sen. Bernie Sanders-endorsed (I-VT) Rep. Tom Perriello, a race that many believed to mirror the 2016 Democratic presidential election’s primaries.
Martin then suggested that Democrats’ overconfidence in the 2016 presidential election led to a stunning defeat.
Martin said, “That sense of complacency led people to take their foot off the gas. We saw a dip in volunteers in the last few weeks, turnout dropped. That cannot ever happen again.”
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) began dumping resources into Virginia since July, where it spent $1.5 million and hired almost 40 staff members, although that pales in comparison to the Republican National Committee (RNC).
The DNC raised $4.4 million in August, although it has a debt of $4.1 million, which remains almost twice the size of its cash reserves. The RNC has $45.9 million in its coffers and no outstanding debt. The RNC spent $3 million in Virginia and hired 80 staff members in Virginia.
RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens said, “The RNC never left Virginia and has had field staff on the ground since 2013.”
Republican candidate Ed Gillespie recently took the lead in the polls against his Democratic competition, Ralph Northam.
Gillespie’s rise in the polls coincides with his outreach to the Republican base. Gillespie barely eked out a victory over his populist primary opponent, Corey Stewart. Stewart is now running for Senate against incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA).
Gillespie made sanctuary cities, one of Trump’s staple issues, one of his own. In the third and final debate between Gillespie and Northam, Gillespie attacked his Democrat opponent when Northam refused to say whether he would sign a bill that bans sanctuary cities in Virginia.
Gillespie also said he will push for issues that will help rural voters to better rally Trump’s base amidst concerns that Republicans do not have the same enthusiasm towards Gillespie as they did towards Trump.
Local Virginian Kim McFall said that she had not been impressed by Gillespie, although she will probably vote for Gillespie. McFall said, “He’s wishy-washy.”
Gillespie stated that he seeks to improve rural Virginia’s economy with tax cuts and fewer regulations. Gillespie said, “We need industrial hemp, we need to have more outdoor recreation jobs, we need to complete the Clinch River State Park. All the detailed specifics I’ve put forward tonight I think are going to rally people here and they’re going to turn out to vote for me.”
Cliff Cauthorne, a local Virginia town council member, said that Gillespie only has one good option to rally his rural town’s voters: a Trump rally “or two.”

The annual meeting of the Democratic National Committee, held in Las Vegas October 18-21, showed that party operatives are preparing for the 2018 election year with a distinct shift to the right in personnel, policy and candidates.
DNC Chairman Tom Perez, installed by the Clinton wing of the party establishment in a narrow victory over Representative Keith Ellison, a Sanders supporter, nominated a slate of candidates for top party committees that excluded several longtime activists who backed Sanders against Clinton in the campaign for the 2016 presidential nomination.
Among those removed from the executive committee were James Zogby, the highest-ranking Arab-American on the DNC; New Hampshire state party chairman Ray Buckley; longtime DNC Secretary Alice Germond, and Barbra Casbar Siperstein, the first transgendered member of the DNC. All either supported Sanders against Clinton, or Ellison against Perez, or both.
Initial press reports highlighted the protests by the former Sanders supporters, portraying the shake-up in the DNC committees, particularly the executive committee and the rules committee, as a “purge” of “dissenters,” although the actual policy differences involved are minimal.
Buckley told NBC News, “I understand the chair can do as he pleases, but still, it’s all just very disappointing.” Zogby tweeted, “this doesn’t bring the party together. It deepens the divide at a time we need all hands on deck for ‘18 & ‘20.”
There was also criticism of Perez for including former chair Donna Brazile on his slate of 75 at-large members for the DNC, given her role in 2016 when she gave Clinton a preview of questions before candidate events held on CNN. Her role was made public when WikiLeaks published Brazile’s contemporaneous emails. Another Perez selection was Manny Ortiz, a lobbyist for the huge Wall Street bank Citigroup.
The rules committee is particularly sensitive, since it will be charged with implementing the recommendations of a special Unity Reform Commission created by Clinton and Sanders as part of his agreement to endorse the Wall Street favorite after she corralled the majority of Democratic convention delegates.
The commission is drawing up recommendations on changes in state rules for delegate selection, including the role of so-called “super-delegates,” elected officials and DNC members who are given votes at the convention in addition to those delegates elected in primaries and caucuses. Virtually all super-delegates, the personification of the party establishment, backed Clinton.
While the Unity Reform Commission was balanced between Clinton and Sanders supporters, the rules committee that will receive its report and take action is stacked 5-0 in favor of former Clinton supporters, following the removal of Buckley.
Perez denied that there was any effort to remove former Sanders supporters or punish them. A spokesman used identity politics to justify the changes in composition, claiming that the Perez slate of committee members and at-large nominees “reflects the unprecedented diversity of our party’s coalition” by increasing the number of Native American, gay and Puerto Rican members, as well as trade union officials.
Jane Kleeb, chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party and a Sanders supporter, criticized the diversity claims, telling Huffington Post, “It’s not only misdirection, but it’s also divisive.” She added, “It continues to paint the Bernie people as not caring about our native and Latino and black brothers and sisters, which is complete nonsense.”
At one point on Friday, Karen Carter Peterson, DNC vice chair of civic engagement and voter participation, accused Sanders and Ellison supporters of seeking to remove black women from party leadership, citing, among others, Donna Brazile.
In another demonstration of the right-wing character of the party leadership, Perez named as a deputy finance chair of the DNC Dan Halpern, a former chairman of the Georgia Restaurant Association and past board member of the National Restaurant Association. Both these organizations are strident opponents of any increase in the minimum wage, let alone the $15-an-hour minimum to which the Democratic Party is nominally pledged.
Another effort to attack the Sanders camp was turned back Friday when the DNC rejected by voice vote a resolution urging Sanders to “register or affiliate with the Democratic Party” rather than continuing to hold his Vermont Senate seat as an independent. Zogby called this an effort that “puts salt in a wound that we need to be closing right now.”
In a cosmetic effort to cover up the corporate domination of the party, the DNC adopted language rejecting contributions from “corporate donors that conflict with our DNC platform.” This had been rejected by the platform committee but was then approved by the full DNC.
While described as “anti-corporate,” the measure’s real significance can be judged by its chief sponsor—Christine Pelosi, the daughter of longtime Representative and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and her multimillionaire real estate investor husband Paul Pelosi. Ms. Pelosi was ludicrously described in press accounts as “a San Francisco activist,” with no mention of her family connection.
In his closing address to the DNC meeting on Saturday, Perez sought to cover up the right-wing shift in the party with a blast of anti-Trump demagogy. He denounced Trump as an “existential threat” to the nation. “We have the most dangerous president in American history and one of the most reactionary Congresses in American history,” he told his audience.
From the standpoint of the Democratic Party, however, the danger posed by Trump is not the danger of a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula or the attack on democratic rights and social benefits at home, but rather the completely unsupported claims that Trump was elected because of Russian intervention in the 2016 elections, and thus embodies a Russian takeover of the White House.
The anti-Russia campaign is the main focus of congressional Democrats, who are otherwise seeking to engage the White House in collaboration on questions such as immigration, tax and budget policy, and infrastructure, while joining with the Republicans in bipartisan support for military operations in Korea, the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe.
The anti-Russia campaign is given a particularly sinister character by the recruitment of a half dozen former CIA and military intelligence officers to run as Democratic candidates in critical marginal seats in the House of Representatives.
As the Washington Post put it, in a report published on the newspaper’s website October 18, “The spooks have come in from the cold, and they’re running for Congress.”
Three former CIA officers are seeking the Democratic congressional nomination in key districts, including: Abigail Spanberger in Richmond, Virginia; Elissa Slotkin in Brighton, Michigan; and Jeff Beals in a Hudson Valley district in New York state, where one of his opponents for the Democratic nomination is former Army intelligence officer Patrick Ryan.
Gina Ortiz Jones, a former Air Force intelligence officer, is running in a Texas district where the incumbent Republican, Will Hurd, is a former CIA agent. Still another intelligence operative, Jay Hulings, a staff member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, is also seeking the nomination to challenge Hurd.
Spanberger cited Trump’s derision of the CIA’s finding of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 elections, telling the Post, “It is wholly unfortunate that the president—at least through his actions and words—isn’t appreciating what they [the CIA] do.”

Pelosi on Her, Schumer and Trump: ‘We Said We Had Shared Values When We Spoke With Him’

(CNSNews.com) - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) said at a press conference yesterday at the Los Angeles headquarters of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights that when she and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer met with President Donald Trump for dinner at the White House last month they told him they had shared values with him.
“We said we had shared values when we spoke with him,” Pelosi said, according to the videotape of the press conference posted on her Facebook page.
Pelosi was explaining why she “trusts” President Trump to follow through and legalize the “DREAMers,” who came to the United States illegally when they were minors.
“Now, just a word about the president and the heartless act that he committed when he rescinded the DACA [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals],” Pelosi said. “I have confidence that he believes in the DREAMers. He told us that. We said we had shared values when we spoke with him, Leader Schumer and the three of us speaking together on this. So I trust he will honor that commitment because the American people want him to do so.”
On Sept. 5, the Trump administration announced that it was rescinding President Obama’s DACA policy, which allowed illegal aliens who had arrived as minors to stay in the United States, but that the cancellation of the policy would not take effect for six months—during which time Congress could work on legislation to deal with the issue.
On Sept. 13, Pelosi and Schumer had dinner with Trump at the White House. When the Democratic leaders emerged from the meeting they put out a joint statement.
“We had a very productive meeting at the White House with the President,” said Pelosi and Schumer. “The discussion focused on DACA. We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.”
Later at Wednesday’s press briefing in Los Angeles, Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D.-Calif.), made clear that he did not trust President Trump.
“Somebody had mentioned about trust and the president,” Gomez said. “I don’t trust the president, but what do you want us to do, walk away? No we’re not going to walk away, right.
“Even if you follow another president: Trust but verify,” said Gomez. “The trust is that when we put a bill on his desk, that’s the trust part. The verification part is if he signs it or not and it will be up to President Trump to determine if he is going to deny DREAMers and DACA recipients, not once but twice, that access to the American dream. That’s what it’s about.”
Pelosi then chimed into say that the Democrats will see what Trump does toward legalizing the DREAMers as a “test of trust” for Trump.
“We see this as a test of trust, because we have said we’re disappointed in a number of things he has done since he was president, but one place that we can find common ground that would be a threshold for us to talk about other issues is this,” Pelosi said.
“This isn’t an issue for us, it’s a value, it’s an ethic. It’s who we are as a nation and we can’t change that,” she said. “So, is he willing to join us in this and, if so, we have some other things to talk about.”

The downward spiral of the Democratic Party started with political correctness, sowing the seeds of the current anti-free speech atmosphere. A political movement in shambles, Democrats still have not looked in the mirror and imagined a new vision. Instead, the Left has painted itself into a corner and has nowhere to go. They have doubled down on the same policies, the same leadership, the same media, the same repeatedly wrong pundits. The Left’s anti-white bigotry, cultural vandalism, anti-American, anti-free speech, and violent protests are not going to win elections.
Berkeley-style violence is the tip of the anti-free speech iceberg. Online discussions are crawling with liberals who upvote each other’s rants faster than they would the Gettysburg Address. At the same time, they massively downvote, flag, and collapse conservative views. Deceiving oneself is ultimately self-defeating. Political movements usually self-correct when they wander too far from reality and the will of the people. The leftist media spin more narrative and offer less fact, liberals like it that way. So on presidential election night, they got a pie in the face they never saw coming. It also happened on Brexit election night.
The Harvey Weinstein scandal is a double whammy for the Left, a blow to the role of Hollywood elites and feminists as well. James Comey covering for Hillary, the Clinton Uranium One and Debbie Wasserman Schulz server scandals are just warming up. The NFL protests are a double whammy, the narrative is a fraud and the venue a disgrace. In 2016, 7881 blacks were murdered, 90.1% of them by other blacks; 7100 blacks killed by other blacks. FBI crime facts show only 16 unarmed blacks were shot by police. That is 00.2% of the total. “Unarmed” is an after-the-event determination -- no one can be sure an assailant is not armed in real time.
Ferguson Missouri’s favorite son Michael Brown is an example. The big 6’4” man had just committed a strongarm robbery, choking a store clerk and stealing cigars. When a policeman stopped him, he profanely resisted and then launched himself into the police car, striking the officer several times. The officer was bloodied and Brown’s DNA was found inside the car. Only Brown could have put himself there. Claims of him being shot while running many feet away were proven false when the autopsy showed him shot from the front at close range.
Menacing and violent people are dangerous, and the possibility that they might be armed cannot be dismissed. And it is the police who have more to fear, as FBI facts show, “a police officer was 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male was to be killed by a police officer.” Some 135 police officers were murdered in the line of duty in 2016.
The Democratic Party, Black Lives Matter bigots and Hate America First white elites use blacks as pawns, and blacks are the losers. Black homicide deaths have skyrocketed from 6095 in 2014. Up 29% in two years, with 1786 more black murder victims just this year. That is 112 times the number of police/black/unarmed incidents, fueled by the Ferguson Effect. From revolving door justice in the 1960s, soft on crime excuses, and today’s fake narrative, the Democratic Party has devastated the black community for decades.
Modern leftists are open bigots spewing racist hate. Liberals attack whites every day, they play the race card in the first two minutes of any discussion. They divide people with identity politics. They give their tribe a pass on all manner of violence, crime, and antisocial behavior. Their smears are both bigoted and designed to kill debate. The Left abandoned Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of a color-blind society long ago. MLK said, “I have a dream… they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character,” liberals today call this a myth. The Left rejects colorblindness and preaches never ending racial division.
The Left peddles multiculturalism, using bigotry to denounce Western ideas as ‘about dead white men,’ or ‘Eurocentric’ mindsets. Similar to the NFL smear-America protests, this is fast becoming the way to irrelevancy. Austria and Czech Republic just voted hard right joining Britain, Hungary, and Poland in resisting European Union liberalism. Uncontrolled immigration and open borders are the number one issue. The populist revolution continues.
A new generation will come along that will reinvent the Democratic Party. Anti-Americanism, anti-free speech, and full-on racism do not work. A Democratic Party that honors and respects America, is pro-Western, that always defends free speech and is non-racist would be a wonder.
