Atlanta Mayor Ends City’s Relationship With ICE

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms issued an executive order Thursday to permanently end the city’s relationship with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In June, the mayor issued an executive order preventing the city from accepting new illegal immigrant detainees for ICE. The executive order Bottoms issued Thursday officially ends the ICE agreement.
“We will no longer be complicit with a policy that intentionally inflicts misery on a vulnerable population without giving any thought to the fallout,” Bottoms said. “As the birthplace of the civil rights movement, we are called to be better than this.”
The city stands to lose millions in revenue from the federal government. It received $78 per day per detainee, amounting to $7.5 million in the last fiscal year from the arrangement.
“It is a significant financial hit to our budget," said Bottoms. "That shows how strongly the city of Atlanta feels about the position as it relates to ICE."
As far as whether the city is becoming a sanctuary city, Bottoms said, “There’s a very loose definition of what a sanctuary city is, and I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to debate that today. What I will say is we are a welcoming and inclusive city. That is who we have always been and that is who we will continue to be.”
