That Statistic Of “Immigrants” Committing Fewer Crimes Than Citizens
How many times have you heard the carefully worded claims from
media “experts” about how immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than
citizens? If you follow the news at all closely I’m guessing it’s been fairly
often. Of course, the careful wording is required so they don’t have to invoke
the phrase “illegal immigrants” (i.e. illegal aliens) and ruin their narrative.
A new study may help put that
debate to rest. Results produced by the Federation for American Immigration
Reform, using statistics from prisons and jails, found that illegal aliens are roughly four
times as likely to commit crimes than citizens. (Washington Times)
Nearly 3 percent of illegal immigrants in
Arizona end up in state prison or jail during the course of a year — four times
the rate of U.S. citizens and legal residents, according to a study that uses
federal reimbursements for prisons and jails to try to calculate one of the
most important yet elusive statistics in the immigration debate.
In New Jersey, illegal immigrants are incarcerated five times
more often, and rates on the West Coast are triple that of legal residents and
citizens, according to the study by the Federation for American Immigration
Reform.
FAIR based its calculations on
federal government reimbursements to states and localities under the State
Criminal Alien Assistance Program, which pays some of the costs for holding
illegal immigrants in prisons and jails. To make the payments, the federal
government must determine whether an inmate is definitely or possibly in the
country illegally.
One important feature of this study is that it’s only looking at
people who have definitely been convicted of a crime, not simply arrested or
suspected. Also, as I noted above, this study draws a distinction between legal
immigrants (who arguably have the lowest rate of criminal convictions) and
illegal aliens. A previous Arizona
study done by John Lott found the same thing, though with a
smaller population sample.
It’s worth noting that this methodology has drawn criticism. The
SCAAP data measures a different set of prisoners than other samples, leading
some critics to question whether the results would be the same if we looked at
the entire prison and jail population. I’ll leave that one for the
statisticians to sort out, but overall trends still appear to conform with
previous attempts at quantifying these numbers.
So what does that mean in terms of the current policy debate
over illegal immigration, the wall and all the rest? Our friend Jeff Dunetz weighed in on
that question and concludes that significantly reducing illegal
immigration could only produce lower crime rates.
The above crime numbers and rates
for illegal immigrants reflect offenses that would not have happened, or at the
very least would be significantly reduced if the U.S borders were secured and
illegal immigrants were not permitted into the country. Border Protection
agents and Ice officials, the people on the ground, tell us that barriers work.
The victims of those 121,984 crimes can thank liberals and Democrats for not
taking action to prevent their victimhood.
Yet again, we should remind ourselves that these numbers fail to
deal with the underlying fact that every illegal alien is committing a crime
simply by being in the country. In that sense, the crime rate among illegals is
technically 100% before you even begin counting other violations of the law.
But that sort of view is considered heresy on the left and in much of the media
these days.
Fact Check: Yes, Americans Burdened with Cost of Mass Illegal Immigration
During President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address (SOTU), the president asserted that it is working- and middle-class Americans who are left paying the price for unchecked, mass illegal immigration to the United States.
“Meanwhile, working-class Americans are left to pay the price for mass illegal migration — reduced jobs, lower wages, overburdened schools and hospitals, increased crime, and a depleted social safety net,” Trump said.
It is true that working- and middle-class Americans are forced to subsidize mass illegal immigration to the country. Every year, illegal immigration of hundreds of thousands of illegal alien residents costs American taxpayers about $116 billion.
As Trump noted, America’s working and middle class also are burdened with stagnant and crushed wages as they are forced to compete against cheaper, illegal alien workers. In California, specifically, a flood of illegal immigration to the state depressed construction worker wages from $45 an hour in the 1980s to now $11 an hour.
In the last decade alone, the U.S. admitted ten million legal immigrants, forcing American workers to compete against a growing population of low-wage workers. Meanwhile, employers are able to reduce wages and drive up their profit margins thanks to the annual low-skilled immigration scheme.
The Washington, DC-imposed mass immigration policy is a boon to corporate executives, Wall Street, big business, and multinational conglomerates as every one percent increase in the immigrant composition of an occupation’s labor force reduces Americans’ hourly wages by 0.4 percent. Every one percent increase in the immigrant workforce reduces Americans’ overall wages by 0.8 percent.

These three strong women are the daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of the victims of a horrifying illegal alien murder.
Gerald and Sharon David of Reno, Nevada, were tragically murdered in their home in Nevada by an illegal immigrant in January 2019. The terrible loss has devastated both their community and three generations of their family who will be represented at the State of the Union: the Davids’ daughter Debra, granddaughter Heather, and great-granddaughter Madison.
Those were not the only murders that the Salvadoran illegal alien committed, but they were particularly shocking.
Cates said Gerald David used his time as the Reno Rodeo Association president in 2006 to promote a breast cancer awareness campaign by getting the group’s cowboys to show they were “tough enough to wear pink shirts.”
“You walk into a room and his presence will just command attention. He was a true leader,” Cates said.
Sharon David was “exuberant” and “bubbly” and “loved animals to the hills,” he said. She was a former director of the rodeo.
Renken belonged to an antique automobile club and was known as the friendly driver of a Ford Model A who was always volunteering to help.
Robin Reedy, who was also in the Carson-Tahoe Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America, said she was surprised to learn Renken’s age.
“I would never have known she was 74 by the way she acted,” she said.
Koontz, who worked at a Walmart and as a manicurist at a local salon, was remembered by co-workers Tuesday as a positive woman who loved wearing bright colors. Her Walmart colleagues wore memorial buttons with her picture.
She was “the only person I know that could come to work wearing lime green glasses and lime green crocs and rock it,” said Teri Bower, who works at the store.
Koontz and her daughter were best friends, Bower said, and the mother had saved up money and surprised her daughter with a trip to Las Vegas for her 21st birthday in December.
Bower said the killings had shaken the quiet community where everyone knows everyone and big news is a pending storm “or a bear running down Main Street.”
“This does not happen around here,” Bower said. “It’s crazy.”
It will happen everywhere until a wall and the will to put an end to it rise.

On Tuesday evening, Trump honored the daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter of 81-year-old Gerald David and 80-year-old Sharon David who were reportedly murdered by 19-year-old Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman who had been living illegally in the U.S.

Here tonight is Debra Bissell. Just three weeks ago, Debra’s parents, Gerald and Sharon, were burglarized and shot to death in their Reno, Nevada, home by an illegal alien. They were in their eighties and are survived by four children, 11 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Also here tonight are Gerald and Sharon’s granddaughter, Heather, and great‑granddaughter, Madison. [Emphasis added]

In a confession to police weeks ago, authorities said Martinez-Guzman admitted to murdering Gerald and Sharon David using a gun he stole from their house.
Martinez-Guzman has family currently living in Carson City, Nevada — including his mother and some siblings — and has been living illegally in the U.S. for at least a year.
Gerald and Sharon David were both beloved members of the south Reno community where they were heavily involved with the Reno Rodeo Association. Gerald was president of the organization in 2006 and Sharon was a member of the group.
“This is just a hard day for everyone,” current Reno Rodeo Association President Mike Torvinen told the media when their murder was revealed to the public.
The illegal alien is being held currently on a $500,000 bail but will be ineligible for bail once he is transferred over to Washoe County by authorities.
A trial date has not yet been announced for the murder case.
