GAETZ - THE MIDDEL EAST IS ONLY 3.5% OF GLOBAL GDP - WHY ARE WE STILL KISSING SAUDI ASS?

Gaetz: ‘The Middle East Is 3.5% of Global GDP and We Are Just Obsessed with This Area of the World’

Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “The Story,” fill-in host Sandra Smith asked Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to weigh in on the potential of a response to a downed U.S. unmanned drone in international airspace as a result of an Iranian attack.
Gaetz dismissed the notion of a “war” over the drone and questioned the wisdom of a foreign policy focused on the Middle East.
“We do not need to go to war with Iran over an unmanned drone until we have more information,” he said. “You saw the president’s statements about this being potentially a mistake and accident. I know Iran has claimed credit for this and so it’s troubling. But I am done with this endless unconstitutional regime changed wars in the Middle East. I mean, the Middle East is 3.5 percent of global GDP, and we are just obsessed with this area of the world.”

The simple fact is Saudi Arabia is the principal ally of the US in the Arab world and a huge purchaser of US weapons. How we can continue to allow these double standards in our foreign policy is unimaginable, but one of the reasons why the Saudis get away with it is that they spend so much money influencing our media and our senior politicians.

In Rare Rebuke To Trump, Senate Votes To Block Saudi Arms Sales

Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the Senate voted to rein in President Trump's powers, passing three bipartisan resolutions on Thursday blocking the administration from selling billions of dollars of weapons to Saudi Arabia.

Seven Republicans, including Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, joined all Democrats in voting for the measures blocking against sales to Saudi Arabia, each passing 53-45.
With 22 separate sales pending, the other 20 resolutions involved arms sales to other allies, including the United Arab Emirates. They were voted on en bloc, whereby four Republicans joined the Democrats in that 51-45 vote.
While sending a strong signal to the administration, all three Senate votes failed to get enough votes to override a pledged veto by the president.
The House must now pass a joint resolution of disapproval, which would then go to the president's desk. It is also not expected to pass a veto.
Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., introduced the measures, citing Saudi Arabia's role in the war in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been engaged in a multi-year campaign against Houthi rebels, often with disastrous consequences for the civilian population.
"If the Senate wants to show the world that, even if you are an ally you cannot kill with impunity, this is the moment," Menendez said on the Senate floor.
But the White House said the U.S. has taken "a number of actions to help the Saudi military mitigate the risk of civilian casualties in Yemen, including training and advising the Saudi military to help them improve their targeting processes to minimize civilian casualties."
In a statement, the White House said halting the arms sales "would send a message that the United States is abandoning its partners and allies at the very moment when threats to them are increasing."
"Saudi Arabia serves as a bulwark against the malign activities of Iran and its proxies," the White House said, adding that the resolutions would affect the ability of American partners "to deter and defend against Iran's hostile acts."
The administration has said it has the authority to carry out the sales because of an "emergency" in the Gulf, citing Iran's aggression in the region. The White House declared the emergency and approved the weapons sales May 24, the same day it announced the deployment of 1,500 troops to the Gulf region.
Following last year's grisly slaying of U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate, Congress has called for holding Saudi Arabia accountable, even as the administration has affirmed U.S.-Saudi ties.
Sen. Rand Paul, who was among the handful of Republicans who voted to ban the weapons sales, referenced Khashoggi on the Senate floor Thursday, saying "there is high confidence that the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia butchered a dissident with a bone saw ... You would think that would give us pause as to giving Saudi Arabia or selling Saudi Arabia more weapons."

U.N. Report Implicates Saudi Crown Prince In Killing Of Jamal Khashoggi

"We don't sell weapons to Russia. We don't sell weapons to China because we have disagreements and we don't think it would be in our best interest to sell them weapons," said Paul, calling Saudi Arabia itself, "untrustworthy."
Also Thursday, the Court of Appeals in the United Kingdom ruled British arm sales to Saudi Arabia for use in the Yemen War are unlawful.
International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said the government would suspend new sales while it looks into the implication of the ruling.

Pentagon Sending Approximately 1,000 More Troops to Middle East

The Pentagon announced Monday that Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has authorized sending anothe 1,000 troops to the Middle East, following alleged attacks by Iran on foreign vessels in the Gulf of Oman.

Shanahan said in the statement:
In response to a request from the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) for additional forces, and with the advice of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and in consultation with the White House, I have authorized approximately 1,000 additional troops for defensive purposes to address air, naval, and ground-based threats in the Middle East.
Just over two weeks ago, the Pentagon authorized sending 1,500 troops to the Middle East, also in response to a request from McKenzie, over alleged increased threats from Iran. Those troops consisted of a Patriot battalion to defend against missile threats, drone aircraft, an engineer element, and a fighter aircraft squadron. This was on top of sending the USS Abraham Lincoln and a bomber squadron to the region.
Those deployments came after Centcom warned there were threats against U.S. troops in the region, the sabotage of four vessels, an armed drone attack on Saudi pumping stations, and a rocket attack in Iraq near the U.S. embassy.
Shanahan referenced recent attacks on foreign oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman as justification.
“The recent Iranian attacks validate the reliable, credible intelligence we have received on hostile behavior by Iranian forces and their proxy groups that threaten United States personnel and interests across the region,” he said.
On Thursday, two oil tankers — one belonging to Norway and the other to Japan — were attacked in the Gulf of Oman, allegedly by limpet mines deployed by Iran.
Secretary of State Michael Pompeo later that day attributed the attacks to Iran, and Centcom put out imagery and a video of what the command said were Iranian sailors retrieving an unexploded mine from the Japanese tankerOn Monday, it released more imagery.
Iran denied carrying out the attacks, but British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt also said the attacks were “almost certainly” carried out by Tehran. A BBC reporter also tweeted a UK Foreign Office source had said, “We strongly agree with the US assessment,” according to Reuters.
The Sunday Times reported that the United Kingdom was sending 100 Royal Marines to the Arabian Gulf to protect Royal Navy and merchant shipping in the area.
A Defence Ministry spokesperson denied the deployment was related to Iran: “This is a pre-planned training deployment and is in no way related to the ongoing situation in the Gulf of Oman.”
The attacks began after the U.S. in April designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist group and announced that it was ending waivers on sanctions on countries still buying oil from Iran, ending a major source of revenue.
The moves are part of the administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign to get Iran to come back to the negotiating table and renegotiate a strong Iran nuclear deal. Former Obama administration officials have launched a media campaign opposing the maximum pressure campaign and claiming the Trump administration wants war with Iran.
Trump administration officials say they are not seeking war with Iran.
Indeed, Shanahan reiterated the U.S. position that it does “not seek conflict with Iran” as he announced the deployment.
“The action today is being taken to ensure the safety and welfare of our military personnel working throughout the region and to protect our national interests,” he said.
“We will continue to monitor the situation diligently and make adjustments to force levels as necessary given intelligence reporting and credible threats,” he said.
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), an Iran hawk who is close to the White House, put out a statement supporting the troop deployments.
“This kind of deployment is a prudent measure to build up our force protection posture at some of our permanent bases in the region like in Qatar and Bahrain where we have thousands of sailors and airmen based, as well as some of the contingency forces we have in places like Iraq,” Cotton said on Fox News on Monday.
“It’ll also help with surveillance in the Persian Gulf, in the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman against the kind of unprovoked attacks on commercial shipping on the high seas that Iran conducted last week against those two tankers, or they conducted in a port last month against four different tankers,” he said.
Cotton pushed back against the idea that the Trump administration’s strategy has put the U.S. on a “collision course” with Iran. He said:
If the United States and Iran are on a collision course, it’s only because Iran continues its 40-year, low-level war against the United States to the point of provoking retaliatory military strikes. Let’s remember the Ayatollah seized power in 1979 and immediately invaded sovereign American soil, our embassy in Tehran, and held our fellow citizens hostage for 400 days.
Also, in 1987, 1988 Iran did exactly the kind of thing they are doing now, attacking commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and in the Strait of Hormuz to the point that Ronald Reagan had to conduct retaliatory military strikes against the Iranian navy and their oil facilities. What Iran did last week warrants such retaliatory military strikes. It’s up to Iran whether they want to behave like a civilized, normal nation or whether they want to continue to conduct these kind of terrorist attacks.

US gears up for World War III with largest defense contract in history

The Pentagon announced Monday the single largest arms purchase in its history, agreeing to buy nearly 500 F-35 fighter aircraft at a total cost of $34 billion.
This purchase is only a down payment on the Pentagon’s acquisition of the notoriously wasteful and failure-prone aircraft, whose design is based on two overarching priorities: fighting a war with a “great power” such as Russia and China and lining the pockets of Lockheed Martin and the horde of former congressmen and retired generals on its payroll.
The agreement covers the 12th, 13th and 14th batches of F-35s ordered by the Pentagon, which eventually plans to field thousands of the aircraft. Billed in 2001 as a program to save money, each plane eventually ended up costing four times the initial estimate.
A US Air Force F-22 aircraft [Credit: US Air Force]
At a projected total program cost of $1.5 trillion, this one weapons system alone would finance the US Department of Education for a quarter-century.
The F-35 has no greater advocate than President Donald Trump, who promotes it like one of his golfing properties. Trump turned a Wednesday afternoon joint press conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda into a photo-op to promote the war plane. As an F-35 carried out a low-speed flyover of the White House, he praised Poland for its agreement to purchase 32 of the aircraft.
At speeches before military audiences, Trump routinely brags about the massive military budgets he has pushed through Congress, touting in particular the Pentagon’s vast spending on the F-35. Speaking at the Air Force Academy commencement ceremony last month, the American president responded to resounding applause from the graduating officers by declaring, “You just like all those brand new, beautiful airplanes that we’re buying.”
Trump continued: “Last year… we secured $700 billion to support our war fighters, followed by another $716 billion—not million—billion. That’s with a ‘B.’”
Both of these Pentagon budgets, entailing the largest increases in defense spending since the end of the Cold War, were passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. Eighty-nine percent of Senate Democrats voted to pass the most recent defense budget, whose explicit aim is to prepare the US military for “great power” conflict with Russia and China.
This year the White House is aiming even higher. Next Monday, the administration plans to submit a $750 billion Defense Department budget proposal, a figure $18 billion higher than the amount requested by the Pentagon.
A small army of defense industry executives, former generals serving as “consultants” and congressmen turned lobbyists for the military-industrial complex is salivating at the infusion of cash into a military notorious for paying $7,622 for coffee makers and $640 for toilet seats.
Even by the normal standards of US war profiteering, the F-35 program takes the cake for sheer corruption—so much so that the warmonger and military yes man John McCain called it a “poster child for acquisition malpractice,” a “scandal” and a “tragedy.”
According to the Project on Government Oversight, “By design, the [US military] services can’t independently perform many of the most basic functions needed to properly employ the most expensive weapon system in history.” It added that Lockheed Martin “keeps the government from even knowing the costs of any of the spare parts it has to buy from the company.”
The hundreds of aircraft already delivered are plagued with failures that make them largely inoperable. As Defense News recently reported, “F-35B and F-35C pilots [are] compelled to observe limitations on airspeed to avoid damage to the F-35’s airframe or stealth coating,” while the aircraft remains prone to “cockpit pressure spikes” that cause “excruciating ear and sinus pain.”
But the graft, incompetence and corruption that mark the F-35 program should not distract from its fundamental purpose: to fight a “near-peer” competitor in the form of Russia or China.
Earlier this month, Vice President Mike Pence, addressing the graduating class at West Point, predicted war in the Pacific, Europe and the Americas within the graduates’ lifetimes.
“It is a virtual certainty that you will fight on a battlefield for America at some point in your life,” he declared. “Some of you will join the fight on the Korean Peninsula and in the Indo-Pacific, where North Korea continues to threaten the peace and an increasingly militarized China challenges our presence in the region. Some of you will join the fight in Europe, where an aggressive Russia seeks to redraw international boundaries by force. And some of you may even be called upon to serve in this hemisphere.
“And when that day comes, I know you will move to the sound of the guns and do your duty, and you will fight, and you will win.”
These blood-curdling sentiments, far from being unique to the Trump administration, are broadly shared on a bipartisan basis. Speaking in Iowa on Tuesday, former naval intelligence officer-turned-Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg said: “Our military capabilities exist for a reason… we stand ready to use force.” He added that the US must prepare for the “wars of the future.”
Even as Trump rips up fundamental constitutional protections, imprisoning immigrant children on military bases and ruling by executive fiat, the Democrats hail the value of an external enemy to enforce political unity at home, with Buttigieg declaring: “The new China challenge provides us with an opportunity to come together across the political divide.” This is essential, he suggests, since, “At least half the battle is at home.”
Some three decades after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the proclamation of a “unipolar moment” of US dominance, America’s efforts to preserve its global hegemony through military means have produced a debacle. In the lead article in the current edition of Foreign Affairs, Fareed Zakaria writes of “The Self-Destruction of American Power,” concluding that, “Sometime in the last two years, American hegemony died.”
But every failure, setback and disaster has only led the United States to double down on its economic bullying and military aggression. After the debacles of the “war on terror,” including the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq and the wars in Libya and Syria, Washington has set its sights on a conflict with Russia and China. The results of such wars will be a disaster on an incomparably greater scale than the bloodletting in the Middle East, threatening a nuclear Third World War.
The homicidal eruption of American militarism that began with the first Gulf War, coinciding with the Stalinist regime’s dissolution of the Soviet Union, will not simply peter out. Unless halted by the emergence of a mass socialist movement of the working class, it will only intensify.

US preparing “assault” against Iran

The Pentagon announced on Monday that the US is sending 1,000 additional troops and other military resources to the Middle East amid belligerent threats against Iran by the Trump administration. The troop movement follows the previous deployment of the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier and its battle group to the Persian Gulf, along with a bomber strike group led by nuclear capable B-52s.
An article from the Israeli website Maariv Online, republished in the Jerusalem Post, reported that the Trump administration is actively preparing a “tactical assault” on Iran. The report, based on diplomatic sources at the UN in New York, stated that “since Friday, the White House has been holding incessant discussions involving senior military commanders, Pentagon representatives and advisers to President Donald Trump.”

According to Maariv Online, the unnamed officials said that “the military action under consideration would be an aerial bombardment of an Iranian facility linked to its nuclear program.” A Western diplomat commented: “The bombing will be massive but will be limited to one target.”
Announcing the troop deployment, acting US Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan stated: “The recent Iranian attacks validate the reliable, credible intelligence we have received on hostile behaviour by Iranian forces and their proxy groups that threaten United States personnel and interests across the region.” He then absurdly added: “The United States does not seek conflict with Iran.”
In reality, the current explosive situation in the Persian Gulf is entirely of Washington’s manufacture. In breach of UN resolutions, the Trump administration unilaterally abrogated the 2015 deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany to limit its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.
The US subsequently re-imposed and strengthened its crippling sanctions on Iran aimed at cutting off all oil exports and collapsing the Iranian economy. It also threatened to take punitive economic measures against companies breaching its unilateral sanctions. Washington’s actions amount to an economic blockade of Iran and an act of war.
With US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the lead, the Trump administration is exploiting attacks on two tankers in the Persian Gulf last Thursday as the pretext for threatening to strike Iran. On Sunday, Pompeo declared that the US was “considering a full range of options,” including “a military response.”
The US Central Command, which would oversee any attack on Iran, released a video which it claims shows a small boat of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) approaching and removing an unexploded limpet mine from one of the damaged tankers—the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous. It followed up yesterday with photos of the same alleged activity.
US officials have continued to blame Iran for the attacks despite a declaration from the tanker’s owner that the vessel was hit by a flying object according to its crew members. Both Japan and Germany have questioned Washington’s claims and called for further evidence, saying the video did not constitute sufficient proof. Iran has denied any involvement in the attacks.
The UN sources quoted in the Jerusalem Post article claimed that Trump himself had not been enthusiastic, but had lost his patience and given the green light to Pompeo, who has been pushing for action.
Pompeo is due to travel today to US Central Command (CENTCOM) headquarters in Florida. He will meet with two top military leaders—CENTCOM commander General Kenneth McKenzie and General Richard Clarke, head of the Special Operations Command—to “discuss regional security concerns and operations.”
CNN noted that the visit was “unusual” as Pompeo was not accompanied by acting US Defence Secretary Shanahan, who was remaining in Washington to “continue to develop options.”
The US has also seized on Iranian statements on Monday warning that its low-level enrichment of uranium will exceed the limit set under the 2015 agreement within 10 days to further wind up tensions. Speaking to the media on Monday, US National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis branded Iran’s actions as “nuclear blackmail” and insisted it must be met with “increasing international pressure.”
What staggering hypocrisy! The US has torn up the 2015 agreement, is crippling Iran’s economy and menacing war. Less than a month ago, Trump declared that if it came to conflict, it would be “the official end of Iran”—implying that the US would use its full arsenal including nuclear weapons to obliterate the Iranian population of more than 80 million. Yet when Tehran suggests that it will no longer be bound by the deal, it is declared to be “blackmail.”
Marquis also reiterated Trump’s lie that the US pulled out because “the horrible nuclear deal left their capabilities intact.” In fact, the 2015 agreement, which Iran only agreed to under the Obama administration’s threat of war, severely curtailed its nuclear programs, placing them under highly intrusive inspections. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly found Iran in compliance with the agreement’s stringent requirements.
Iran has only tentatively moved towards abrogating the agreement, even though it would be fully justified in doing so by Washington’s illegal actions. In early May, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani set a 60-day deadline for the other signatories—Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China—to put tangible measures in place to enable Iran to export oil and transact with international banks. The deadline expires on July 7.
The European powers have sought to save the agreement, but so far have taken little action. An alternative payment system, INSTEX, which that would circumvent the existing US-dominated international financial and banking system, has been launched but is not yet operational. Even if it were up and running, it would initially only apply to trade in food and medicine. A fully operational system would bring the European powers into open conflict with the United States, which would undoubtedly retaliate.
The Trump administration’s warmongering in the Persian Gulf is opening up divisions in Europe. While German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has openly questioned US “evidence” of Iranian involvement in last week’s tanker attacks, Britain has quickly fallen into line. On Monday, Italy’s deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the fascist Lega, signalled Rome’s support for Washington’s war drive against Iran.
The Trump administration is recklessly preparing for a war against Iran. Any US airstrike on Iran, even if limited to one attack, would rapidly escalate into an all-out war that would not only involve other US regional allies such as Saudi Arabia and Israeli, but also threaten to drag in other major powers to defend their vital interests.

Robert Spencer’s The History of Jihad: From Muhammad to ISIS is an amazing book, extraordinary in its detail and riveting in its narratives and analysis.  This book documents the history of horrors, violence, brutality, oppression, conquests by the sword, beheadings of hundreds of thousands (probably millions), destruction of civilizations and cultures, corruption, deception, and lies that are part of the Islamist culture, and every other evil that you can imagine that one group of humans could impose on others in the name of an ideology or, in this case, a pseudo-religion.

Saudi crown prince warns against 'exploiting' the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi for political gains in a veiled attack on Turkey

Saudi Arabia's crown prince has warned against 'exploiting' the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi - which he is suspected of ordering - in what appeared to be an attack on Turkey.
Mohammed bin Salman called Khashoggi's death a 'painful crime', once again distancing himself from the killing which has tarnished his reputation abroad.
'Any party exploiting the case politically should stop doing so, and present evidence to the (Saudi) court, which will contribute in achieving justice,' he said.
He did not specify Turkey, but Ankara has been leading international pressure on Riyadh over the death and has demanded to know the whereabouts of Khashoggi's body, which has yet to be found.
Khashoggi, who had written critically of the prince, was murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October last year.

Prince Mohammed said the kingdom was committed to 'full justice and accountability' in the case.
The prince, however, added that he wants strong relations with 'all Islamic countries including Turkey'.
Riyadh's ever-changing explanations for the death led to worldwide suspicion that the prince was behind the operation.
Saudi Arabia initially denied any knowledge of what happened, insisting for weeks that Khashoggi had walked out of the consulate alive.

Changing tack again, the Saudis then admitted the journalist was murdered, charged 11 people but denied that the prince had been involved.
However, reports have suggested that Prince Mohammed was linked to the hit squad which killed Khashoggi and had issued threats against him in the past.
America has alleged that his right-hand man Saud al-Qahtani 'was part of the planning and execution of the operation' to kill Khashoggi.
The killing strained Saudi Arabia's relations with the West and led to some demands for Europe and the U.S. to cut arms exports to the Gulf kingdom.
But U.S. President Donald Trump - who called Saudi Arabia's explanation credible - and French leader Emmanuel Macron both rejected the idea of cancelling weapons deals.
The prince's latest comments also come amid spiralling tensions in the Middle East after two Gulf tankers were hit with explosions on Thursday in the second apparent attack in weeks.
