Horror New Year
Hanukkah Five stabbing victim in grave condition as authorities block information on suspect.
“Hanukkah stabbing victim’s ‘dire’ condition revealed,” headlined the January 1, 2020 Fox News story by Travis Fedschun. The victim was Josef Neumann and according to a statement from his family, “the 70-year-old was stabbed multiple times during the attack, sustaining injuries that included three cuts to the head, one cut to the neck, a shattered right arm, and a knife that penetrated his skull directly into the brain.”
Doctors are not optimistic about Neumann’s chances to regain consciousness, and “if our father does miraculously recover partially, doctors expect that he will have permanent damage to the brain; leaving him partially paralyzed and speech impaired for the rest of his life.”
A photo released Wednesday by the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council in Hudson Valley showed the unconscious Neuman with his bloodied and bruised head heavily sutured. The 70-year old was one of five victims of an attack in Monsey, New York, last Saturday at the home of Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg.
Shortly before 10 p.m., as the rabbi was lighting the candle on the seventh night of Hanukkah, a man with face partially covered burst into the home and began stabbing people with a machete. The attack claimed five victims, including the rabbi’s son. The suspect was covered in blood when police arrested him in New York City on December 22.
The suspect was identified as Grafton Thomas, 37, an African American from Greenwood Lake, New York. News reports said the suspect’s arrest record had been sealed and the mystery about possible motive continued into 2020.
“Judge mum on why suspect was set free last year,” read the second half of the Fox News headline. As Fedschun revealed, Thomas had “multiple run-ins with law enforcement” including an arrest for “assaulting a police horse.” The judge assigned to the case refused comment, calling it a “sealed case.”
After the attack, New York’s Democrat attorney general Letitia James, proclaimed “zero tolerance for acts of hate of any kind and we will continue to monitor this horrific situation.”
At this writing, James has offered no explanation why the prior case was sealed and district attorneys have declined comment.
After the Hanukkah stabbings, New York governor Andrew Cuomo cited recent attacks, “motivated by hate. They are doing mass attacks. These are terrorists in our country perpetrating terrorism on other Americans, and that’s how we should treat it and that's how I want the laws in this state to treat it.” At this writing, the governor has made no public demand that the suspect’s previous cases be unsealed.
In similar style, New York authorities have announced no plans to prosecute the case as terrorism. The Southern District of New York is charging Thomas with five counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs involving an attempt to kill and use of a dangerous weapon, and resulting in bodily injury. NBC News describes the counts as “federal hate crimes charges.”
As Fedschun’s story noted, in journals recovered from his home Thomas questioned, “why ppl mourned for anti-Semitism when there is Semitic genocide,” along with a page with drawings of a Star of David and a swastika. Thomas’ phone revealed repeated internet searches for “Why did Hitler hate the Jews” as well as “German Jewish Temples near me” and “Prominent companies founded by Jews in America.”
Thomas’ court-appointed attorney Susanne Brody claimed the suspect has struggled with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Attorney Michael Sussman, retained by the family, told reporters Thomas had been hearing voices and may have stopped taking psychiatric medications. According to Sussman, nothing found in Thomas’ home pointed to “an anti-Semitic motive.”
According to a statement from Thomas’ family, the suspect has no history of violent acts, no history of anti-Semitism and is not a member of any hate groups. The family did cite a long history of mental illness but an insanity defense could prove difficult.
Such a defense shifts the burden of proof to the accused, who must prove beyond reasonable doubt that he did not know the difference between right and wrong at the time of the crime. The suspect has already exhibited evidence of planning the attack, and according to victims he covered his face with a scarf. His flight from the scene also betrays knowledge of criminal intent.
In 2002, Grafton Thomas joined the U.S. Marine Corps but left the service within a month. Marine Captain Karoline Foote told reporters the Corps was required to keep the details private. President Trump commander in chief of U.S. Armed Forces, might give Capt. Foote a call.
President Trump condemned the “horrific” attack at the rabbi’s home and tweeted: “We must all come together to fight, confront, and eradicate the evil scourge of anti-Semitism. Melania and I wish the victims a quick and full recovery.” At this writing, recovery looks unlikely for Josef Neumann.
Meanwhile, after the attack, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio told Fox News, “An atmosphere of hate has been developing in this country over the last few years. A lot of it is emanating from Washington and it’s having an effect on all of us.” Also after the attack, California Democrat Eric Swalwell tweeted “Anti-Semitism is on the rise in America. And it’s being stoked by @realDonaldTrump who won’t condemn it.”

African-American, Latino, and Muslim Communities Must Root Out Jew-Hatred
The time for feel-good ‘dialogue’ is over.
Virtually every recent stabbing and attack on Jews in New York City and the metropolitan area has been perpetrated by a black, Hispanic or sympathizers with jihad. It is time for leaders of those communities to admit to anti-Semitism within their midst and STOP it. Time for truth telling. Perpetrators must be punished.
New York's extremely liberal politicians speak about anti-Semitism, but are not using anywhere near the force of law to bring these perpetrators to justice. In fact, we’re hearing that last week's attackers against Jews, who were black or Hispanic, have already been released and are back on the streets.
Much of the hatred against Jewish people is being fueled by jihadist talk, and yet, because of political correctness, authorities are not doing the pre-reconnaissance that common sense dictates.
We have heard the evasive platitudes about ‘extremism’, ‘intolerance’, ‘hate’, but what we are witnessing in these attacks is raw anti-Semitism, specifically against Jews. Call it what it is! New York's liberal politicians want us to believe that this is coming from a climate of ‘extremism’ and ‘white supremacists’, whereas in the metro area it is a Jew-hatred being fomented within the minority communities.
The major Jewish organizations have failed the Jewish community by not calling out or pressuring the minority communities responsible for these attacks. They are wedded to liberalism's clichés and goals and, even now, routinely choose their partnerships with minority communities over the safety of Jewish individuals.
Unfortunately, the Democrat Party knows that the Jewish community will remain an enthusiastic constituency even though the Party is silent while anti-Semitism grows within its midst, as seen with Omar, Tlaib, Ocasio-Cortez and other outspoken members of their caucuses. The Jewish Community is relinquishing its leverage in service to its undying infatuation with liberalism and the Democrat Party.
Many of the policies of the mainstream liberal Jewish organizations are militating against solving this crisis:
* they have been backers of open borders;* they have been against necessary vetting of those coming from Muslim countries;* they are against what they call ‘profiling’;* they are for ‘bail reform’ leading to immediate release of suspects; and* they are the first to call ‘racist’ anyone who asks the minority communities to begin fighting the anti-Semitism in their midst.
Friends: the time for feel-good ‘dialogue’ is over. Jewish organizations must get past worrying more about the sensitivities of other minorities and their leaders over the lives and safety of the Jewish people.
People ask: why is there not an outcry over the daily violence against Jews as there would be if the targets were black, Muslim, or LGTB? The answer is that the high-profile mainstream liberal Jewish organizations that often spearhead public outcries when minorities are attacked are far less angered when similar attacks happen against Jews if the perpetrators are from minority groups. If these attackers in the NYC metro area had been white or Christian, the establishment liberal Jewish organizations and political leaders definitely would be howling and using the opportunity to condemn America and its way of life.
THE MONSEY STABBING SUSPECT: Thomas E. Grafton Of Greenwood Lake, NY
Suspect Arrested, Drenched in Blood, in Hanukkah Machete Attack
2:40
The suspect in a machete attack Saturday night in which five Jews were wounded at a Hanukkah party in Monsey, New York, has been identified as Grafton Thomas, 38.
He was arrested in Harlem by New York Police Department (NYPD) officers and “was found with blood all over his clothing and a strong smell of bleach in the car, like he was trying to destroy evidence,” according to Rockland County Assistant District Attorney Michael Dugandzic.
The attack occurred at a rabbi’s house in the religious community — the latest attack on Orthodox Jews near New York City. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has come under increasing criticism for the attacks, especially after several suspects in recent violent antisemitic attacks were released as courts have rushed to comply with the state’s new “bail reform” legislation, which is supported by the de Blasio administration, and which takes full effect Jan 1.
De Blasio condemned the attack, but also came under immediate criticism for not doing enough about antisemitism:
Recently, De Blasio said that he had “mixed feelings” about an executive order signed earlier this month by President Trump to extend the protections of Title VI of the the Civil Rights Act to Jews on college campuses. De Blasio said that he worried it could impede freedom of speech.
Democrats have, in the past, attempted to blame President Donald Trump or white supremacists for antisemitic violence. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MN) tweeted, then deleted, a claim earlier this month that “white supremacy” was responsible for an attack in Jersey City in which two Jews, a Latino immigrant, and a police officer were murdered.
The suspects were later found to be black, with reported past ties to the radical Black Hebrew Israelite group.
Some on the left attempted to blame President Trump for the machete attack, for “exceptionalizing” Jews, even in a “positive” way:
A recent poll by the Orthodox Jewish magazine Ami found that support for Trump among Orthodox Jews has risen from 54% to 89% over the past three years.

WATCH: Wild Brawl Breaks Out at New York Mall on Christmas Eve
1:07
A wild brawl broke out at an upstate New York mall on Christmas Eve, with participants causing mayhem in the beef jerky outlet store, according to a video of the incident.
A video posted to Twitter showed at least ten people throw punches at each other and knock over display items at Albany’s Crossgates Mall on Tuesday.
The clip has since gone viral, racking up 2.8 million views as of Thursday afternoon.
“Out of the store! Out of the store!” one person could be heard yelling in the video.
It did not appear that there were any customers in the store at the time of the brawl, and the two employees’ efforts to break up the melee proved to be futile.
Towards the end of the video, the brawl moves to the front of the beef jerky store. With all the mayhem going on, a table and all its contents were knocked over in the store.
The Albany Times Union reported that police were called to keep the peace at the mall on Tuesday but no arrests have been made as of Thursday.
