A group of gunmen ambushed and killed a local police commander and one of his officers in the Mexican border state of Sonora. The gunmen fired more than one hundred rounds into the victim’s vehicle causing catastrophic injuries that left the two men disfigured.

The assassination took place over the weekend in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, in the municipality of Cajeme. A group of gunmen shot and killed Commander Jesús Alberto Navarro Velarde who was riding a police vehicle with Jorge Alberto Galingo Ayon. The attack occurred in the northern part of the city.

According to local news outlets, the gunmen fired several barrages of gunfire. The attack went on for several minutes. Crime scene photographs revealed that the gunfire severely disfigured the bodies and faces of the two lawmen.

While authorities have not revealed suspects or a motive for the murder, the State of Sonora is considered one of the main strongholds of the Sinaloa Cartel. In recent years, that criminal organization experienced several cases of infighting within various factions and cells.

Cajeme is considered one of the deadliest cities in the world. It ranks number three with 138.28 homicides per 100,000 in population, the local newspaper El Sol de Hermosillo reported quoting Mexican government crime statistics.

In the aftermath of the murder, Mayor Javier Lamarque and other top officials held a funeral ceremony for the two lawmen where they bid farewell to them with full police honors. Authorities have not made any arrests in the case.

A group of gunmen kidnapped 23 victims traveling in two vans through Mexico as part of a tour. After making various demands from relatives, the gunmen released 15 victims. Eight others remain missing at the time of this publication.

The kidnappings took place this week as the group traveled from the central Mexico state of Guanajuato to the city of Saltillo, Coahuila. After leaving in two rental vans, the groups went missing early Monday morning.  However, it wasn’t until Wednesday morning that relatives filed a report with authorities after getting a series of ransom demands.

On Wednesday afternoon, the gunmen released 16 of the victims and one of the vans leaving them in the city of Matehuala, San Luis Potosi. It remains unclear if any ransoms were paid.  According to information released by the San Luis Potosi Attorney General’s Office, the victims are “healthy” and have been reunited with their families.

Authorities have not identified if one of the various drug cartels that operate in the region is tied to the kidnapping. In February a team of gunmen carjacked and kidnapped a well-known businessman and his son as they traveled along a highway in San Luis Potosi. During a clash between rival cartels, the businessman sustained fatal injuries and left the kidnappers, the kidnapping victim, and his son on the side of the road, Breitbart Texas reported.

This mass kidnapping comes during one of Mexico’s busiest tourist seasons, Easter week. As Breitbart Texas reported, a group of gunmen shot and killed three men earlier this week outside a hotel in Cancun, Quintana Roo, in the region’s ritzy tourist area. On that same day, a group of gunmen killed three victims and injured three others at a public beach in the tourist hotspot of Acapulco, Guerrero.

Report: Mexican Immigration Cops Demanded $200 from Jailed Migrants Killed in Deadly Fire

Mexican immigration officials at a detention center that went up in flames last month in Ciudad Juarez had a running extortion scheme. The scheme involved demanding money from migrants in exchange for being released. Those who were unable to pay were locked inside and eventually deported.

That extortion operation involved officials with Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) who demanded between $200 to $500. The scheme led to the deadly fire that killed 40 migrants last month, a report by VICE revealed. Information from anonymous guards at the center and migrants who were able to get their relatives to pay the “fee” demanded by corrupt Mexican officials helped uncover the extortion racket.

As Breitbart Texas reported, the fire took place late last month in Ciudad Juarez during an apparent protest where authorities locked the migrants inside. The migrants set fire to numerous mattresses as part of the protest. A leaked surveillance video revealed that instead of putting out the flames, agents simply made sure the doors were locked before walking out of the center leaving the migrants to their fate. In the aftermath, 40 migrants died from burns and smoke inhalation.

Soon after the fire, Jorge Vazquez Campbell, a Mexican attorney filed a complaint and posted a video on social media making the same allegations that VICE did in their story claiming that INM agents even used US bank accounts to have the extortion fees wired there by the relatives of detained migrants, Breitbart Texas reported at the time.

Most recently, Mexican federal officials revealed they had formally charged three INM agents, a security guard, and one migrant for their role in the fire. The INM agents are Daniel Goray Yosioka, Rodolfo Collazo de la Torre y Gloria Liliana Ramos García. The security guard has been identified as Alan Omar Pascual, and the migrant has been identified as Jaison Daniel Catari Rivas.

6,000 Known Migrant Border Crossers in One Texas Sector During Past Week

Migrants wait to be processed by Border Patrol agents in Eagle Pass, Texas on December 19, 2022. - The US Supreme Court halted December 19, 2022 the imminent removal of Title 42, a key policy used since the administration of president Donald Trump to block migrants at the southwest border, …

Agents in the Del Rio Border Patrol Sector reported that more than 6,000 migrants were apprehended or known to have crossed the border illegally and got away. During the month of March, agents apprehended a total of about 24,000 migrants and reported nearly 11,000 got-aways.

Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens tweeted a video weekly recap featuring Acting Eagle Pass South Station Patrol Agent in Charge Russell Becker. During the report, Becker reported the agents in the Del Rio Sector apprehended 3,850 migrants. This is down from nearly 5,300 migrants apprehended the week before.

Russell also reported that 2,242 migrants were known to have crossed the border between ports of entry without being apprehended. This is down from just over 3,000 one week earlier.

Migrant apprehensions in the Del Rio Sector apprehended approximately 24,000 migrants in March, according to an unofficial report reviewed by Breitbart Texas. While this is an increase from the 22,543 apprehended in February, it represents a significant decrease from the 41,631 apprehended in March 2022.

During Fiscal Year 2023, which began on October 1, 2022, Del Rio Sector agents apprehended nearly 218,000 migrants, the report states. This compares to 195,299 apprehended during the same period one year ago.

In addition to the apprehensions, another nearly 82,300 migrants got away without being apprehended, another unofficial Border Patrol report states. This is down from the 89,200 reported during the same period last year.

The Del Rio Sector has been one of the busiest sectors in the United States following the surge of Haitian migrants held in a makeshift camp under the international bridge in September 2021. On Monday, Republican presidential primary hopeful Nikki Haley visited the sector border towns of Del Rio and Eagle Pass, Breitbart Texas reported. Haley told Breitbart Texas that to Biden administration’s policies of releasing migrants apprehended at the border contribute to the record number of migrant apprehensions across the southwest border. The former U.N. Ambassador and South Carolina governor said she favors “catch and deport” over the current “catch and release” policies.
