(CNSNews.com) - Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chair of the House Oversight Committee, said on Thursday night he wants to follow the trail of anonymous Chinese money to the Biden family, and the possible influence China's Communist Party may have had on Biden policies.

For example, in February 2022, the Biden administration ended the Trump-era China Initiative, established by the Justice Department in 2018 to counter national security threats from the People's Republic of China.

"So we're sending a letter to Penn, requesting documents related to the Chinese donations," Comer told investigative reporter John Solomon Thursday night:

"We want the list of the individuals involved, whoever was involved in soliciting donations from China -- we want all communications, because I think this is very important. This is another aspect of the potential for this family to be compromised.

"Look at the pattern here, from China. Anonymous donations to the Biden Center for diplomacy, which paid Joe Biden a salary; anonymous donors into Hunter Biden's shady LLC from China; anonymous purchasers of art from China at Hunter's new art gallery in New York City: There is a pattern here of massive amounts of money flowing into Biden interests. And this is why we're investigating this family.

"And I think what's happened in the last 48 hours with the mainstream media -- they see the legitimacy of this investigation. And I think we've got a lot of momentum now and a lot of purpose behind what we're doing, and hopefully, we'll be able to get some answers very soon."

Penn -- the University of Pennsylvania -- established the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C., providing Biden with office space after he served as vice president.

Penn reportedly received millions of dollars in donations from China, among other sources, to establish the Penn Biden think tank -- where some classified material was found in Biden's office last November.

Threats from China

Looking back one year to February 2022, Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen explained the threat from China, even as he announced the end of the DOJ's China Initiative:

"I’ll give you a few examples of what the PRC government is doing," Olsen said in a speech at George Mason University in Virginia:

"First, it has targeted U.S. citizens with connections to the intelligence community to obtain valuable government and military secrets. In recent years, we have prosecuted four espionage cases involving the PRC, reflecting a concerted effort to steal our most sensitive information.

"Second, the government of China has also used espionage tools and tactics against U.S. companies and American workers to steal critical and emerging technologies. Agents of the PRC government have been caught stealing everything from cutting-edge semiconductor technology to actual seeds that had been developed for pharmaceutical uses after years of research and the investment of millions of dollars.

"Third, the PRC government has used malicious and unlawful cyber campaigns to pursue technological advancement and profit. The PRC reaps the benefits of these criminal activities, while the victims, including governments, businesses and critical infrastructure operators, lose billions of dollars in intellectual property, proprietary information, ransom payments and mitigation efforts.

"Finally, China’s government has gone to great lengths to silence dissent. It has intimidated journalists and employed a variety of means to attempt to censor and punish U.S. citizens, residents, and companies for exercising their rights to free expression. I mentioned earlier Operation Fox Hunt — the PRC’s illegal effort to coerce the return of certain Chinese dissidents to China — which is just one example."

Then Olsen explained why DOJ was scrapping the China Initiative:

"We have heard concerns from the civil rights community that the 'China Initiative' fueled a narrative of intolerance and bias. To many, that narrative suggests that the Justice Department treats people from China or of Chinese descent differently. The rise in anti-Asian hate crime and hate incidents only heightens these concerns...

"There are also increasing concerns from the academic and scientific community about the department’s pursuit of certain research grant fraud cases. We have heard that these prosecutions — and the public narrative they create — can lead to a chilling atmosphere for scientists and scholars that damages the scientific enterprise in this country.

"Safeguarding the integrity and transparency of research institutions is a matter of national security. But so is ensuring that we continue to attract the best and the brightest researchers and scholars to our country from all around the world — and that we all continue to honor our tradition of academic openness and collaboration.

"In light of these concerns, we began a review soon after I took office...While I remain focused on the evolving, significant threat that the government of China poses, I have concluded that this initiative is not the right approach. Instead, the current threat landscape demands a broader approach.

"I want to emphasize my belief that the department’s actions have been driven by genuine national security concerns. But by grouping cases under the China Initiative rubric, we helped give rise to a harmful perception that the department applies a lower standard to investigate and prosecute criminal conduct related to that country or that we in some way view people with racial, ethnic or familial ties to China differently..."

Olsen said the DOJ's National Security Division would be "relentless in defending our country from China," but instead of calling it the China Initiative, DOJ would lump China in with other hostile nations, through a so-called "Strategy for Countering Nation-State Threats."

Biden Issues Proclamation: ‘Faith Has Sustained Me Throughout My Life’

(CNSNews.com) - President Joe Biden marked Religious Freedom Day on Friday by issuing a proclamation in which, among other things, he talked about his own religious faith.

“Faith has sustained me throughout my life,” Biden said.

“For me and for so many others, it serves as a reminder of both our collective purpose and potential in the world,” he said.

“But for far too many people within our borders and beyond, practicing their faith still means facing fear and persecution,” Biden said. “Today, let us recommit ourselves to ending this hate. And let us work together to ensure that people of all religions—and no religion—are treated with equal dignity and respect.”

Here is the full text of Biden’s proclamation on Religious Freedom Day:

President Joe Biden: “On Religious Freedom Day, we reflect on our right to practice, pray, and preach our faiths peacefully and openly. Across the country, we practice many different religions. We celebrate many different traditions. \And we honor our faiths in many different ways and places—from churches, to mosques, to synagogues, to temples. This religious freedom—this freedom to practice religion fully and freely or to practice no religion at all—is enshrined in our Constitution. And together we must continue to preserve and protect it.

“This effort is as important now as it has ever been. In the United States, we are facing a rising tide of antisemitism and renewed attacks against certain religious groups. Across the world, minority communities—including Uyghurs, Rohingya, Ahmadiyya Muslims, Jews, Christians, Bahá’ís, Yezidis, atheists, and humanists—continue to face intimidation, violence, and unequal protection under the law.  This hate is harmful to our communities and countries, and it is on all of us to speak out and stop it.

“That is exactly what my Administration is doing. We established the Protecting Places of Worship Interagency Policy Committee last January, and implemented the largest-ever increase in funding for the physical security of non-profits—including churches, gurdwaras, mosques, synagogues, temples, and other houses of worship. In my 2023 Budget proposal, I called for another large increase in funding for this key program. In September, we hosted the United We Stand Summit, the first White House summit on combating hate-motivated violence, including violence on the basis of religion. In December, I established a new interagency group to increase and better coordinate the Federal Government’s efforts to counter antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of bias and discrimination within the United States. As its first order of business, this group is developing a national strategy to fight antisemitism. To build bridges across beliefs and backgrounds, the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships is collaborating with diverse faith and community leaders on a range of projects—including helping families recover from disasters, distributing COVID-19 vaccines, improving maternal and child health, and resettling refugees across the United States.

“The United States is also speaking out and standing up against religious persecution around the world. Last year, my Administration provided $20 million to help promote religious freedom and protections for members of religious minorities globally, including helping ensure that people everywhere can practice their faiths free from fear. I appointed Rashad Hussain as Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom—the first Muslim to hold this post—and Deborah Lipstadt, a Holocaust expert, as the first Ambassador-level Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. As a founding member of the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance, we also have coordinated with partners around the world to promote the rights of religious minority groups and combat persecution. And we are ensuring that United States diplomats continue to receive training on religious freedom and its central importance to our work.

“Faith has sustained me throughout my life. For me and for so many others, it serves as a reminder of both our collective purpose and potential in the world.  But for far too many people within our borders and beyond, practicing their faith still means facing fear and persecution. Today, let us recommit ourselves to ending this hate. And let us work together to ensure that people of all religions—and no religion—are treated with equal dignity and respect.

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 16, 2023, as Religious Freedom Day.

“IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this
thirteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-seventh.

“JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.”

(CNSNews.com) - When First Lady Jill Biden was in Mexico City on Sunday, she went with Mexican First Lady Beatriz Gutierrez Muller to pay homage at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Protectress of the Unborn.

“Began my trip to Mexico City with a visit to the beautiful Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” Jill Biden said in a tweet, which featured a photograph of her standing in front of the framed image of the Virgin Mary as she had appeared to the Mexican peasant, Juan Diego, in 1531.

The Basilica itself sent out a tweet with four photos of Biden at the shrine in the company of Mexican First Lady Beatriz Gutierrez Muller and the basilica’s rector, Msgr. Salvador Martinez Avila.

“The Rector of the Basilica of Guadalupe, Msgr. Salvador Martínez Ávila received Dr. Jill Biden, First Lady of the United States this afternoon, January 8,” said the tweet. “who arrived accompanied by Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of the President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador.”

“The Virgin of Guadalupe, like the shroud of Turin, appears on a piece of fabric. Both are sacred objects, hundreds of years old, and both depict an image said to be miraculous,” explains a story about the Our Lady of Guadalupe posted by the Vatican News. “The Virgin of Guadalupe was declared Queen of Mexico and is Patron of the Americas.”

“Our Lady of Guadalupe first introduced herself as the Mother of God and the mother of all humanity when she appeared on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico in 1531,” says the Vatican News. “An indigenous peasant, Juan Diego, saw a glowing figure on the hill. After she had identified herself to him, Our Lady asked that Juan build her a shrine in that same spot, in order for her to show and share her love and compassion with all those who believe.”

St. Pope John Paul II named Our Lady of Guadalupe the “Protectress of Unborn Children”

A prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe posted by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops addresses her as “Patroness of unborn children.” It says:

Virgin of Guadalupe,
Patroness of unborn children

we implore your intercession
"for every child at risk of abortion.
Help expectant parents to welcome from God
the priceless gift of their child’s life.

Console parents who have lost that gift
through abortion,
and lead them to forgiveness and healing
through the Divine Mercy of your Son.

Teach us to cherish
and to care for family and friends
until God calls them home.
Help us never to see others as burdens.

Guide our public officials
to defend each and every human life
through just laws.
Inspire us all to bring our faith into public life,
to speak for those who have no voice.

We ask this in the name of your Son,
Jesus Christ, who is Love and Mercy itself.
Amen.

House to Consider 'Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act' This Week

(CNSNews.com) -- This week, the Republican-controlled U.S. House will consider the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, legislation that would require a medical professional to provide immediate care to a baby, and immediate admission to a hospital, if the child survives an abortion or attempted abortion.

If the health care professional does not act to help the baby, he could be fined or imprisoned up to five years (or both). If the health care practitioner kills or attempts to kill a baby born alive, they can be prosecuted for murder.

House Rep. Ann Wagner (R-Mo.) reintroduced the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act on Jan. 9. The bill was cosponsored by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.).

"All children should have the right to receive lifesaving care, especially those who survive an abortion," said Rep. Wagner in a press release.  "The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act will provide commonsense protections for innocent children and their mothers and will ensure all babies receive the essential care they need at an incredibly vulnerable moment.  It pains me that this fight has to be fought at all, but medical care for babies should not be a partisan issue.  Now, with Republicans in the Majority, the House will finally take action and vote to protect the fundamental right to life.”

Majority Leader Scalise said, "On the first day of the 118th Congress, I am proud that Republicans are following through on the promises that we made to the American people.... It is appalling that for the last four years, Democrats refused to hold a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Republicans are committed to defending life and doing everything in our power to keep babies who survive an abortion alive.”

The original version of the legislation was introduced in the House in January 2021, where it was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary and then the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. The Democrats, who controlled the House then, did not bring the bill up for a vote.

Similar legislation was also introduced in the Democrat-controlled Senate in January 2021. It was referred to the Judiciary Committee.

Commenting on the new bill, SBA Pro-Life America's Marilyn Musgrave said it "showcases the barbaric reality of late-term abortion and ensures that babies who are born alive during a failed abortion receive the same medical care as any other baby born prematurely at the same age."

"The extremism of the Democratic Party leadership and the abortion lobby in opposing an end to infanticide shows how out of step they are with most Americans," said Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life Action.  It's inhumane to stand by while children are allowed to die even as they survive an abortion.... This is long overdue and represents a place to begin in this new year, and the Pro-Life Generation calls on Congress to finally end this human rights atrocity."

Melissa Ohden, CEO of the Abortion Survivors Network, said, "This legislation will save lives. The Abortion Survivors Network is committed to serving survivors of abortion at any gestational age, along with their mothers, who deserve compassionate prenatal and postpartum care, a delivery plan, and emotional support."

"Let us work together to ensure that infant survivors and their mothers receive the best medical and emotional care possible," said Ohden.  "We are proud to stand with Congresswoman Wagner in support of this legislation.”

House Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), however, is not happy about the legislation and the pending vote. As reported by Politico on Jan. 10, Mace said, "We learned nothing from the midterms if this is how we're going to operate in the first week. Millions of women across the board were angry over overturning Roe v. Wade."

"What we're doing this week is paying lip service to life," she added. "Nothing that we're doing this week on protecting life is ever going to make it through the Senate."

The U.S. Senate is controlled by the Democrats (51-49).  So, if the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act passes in the House, it likely will go nowhere in the Senate.

Democrats Shoot Down Two Pro-Life Bids

The Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act says that an infant born alive following an abortion is a “legal person for all purposes under the laws of the United States,” and as such must be attended to by medical staff or transported to a nearby hospital for care.

Democrats offered two arguments against the bill: (a) they said it is already illegal for doctors and nurses not to care for any individual, therefore no new legislation is necessary, and (b) it may actually be dangerous to transport an infant to a hospital.

When it comes to combating racial discrimination, or discrimination against LGBT persons, Democrats can never get enough legislation on the books, but for some reason when it comes to infants born alive following a botched abortion, no new laws are necessary. Yet it was one of their own, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, who openly said he was against attending to such children.

Four years ago, Northam explained his support for a pro-abortion bill that codified his position.

“If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable.” Swell. Then what? “The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.” In other words, they could decide to let the baby die and not be prosecuted.

It is true that transporting an infant who survives an abortion to a hospital could be dangerous. There is a way to fix this, but the same Democrats who make this pitch have already said no to it: only physicians should be allowed to perform an abortion. But Democrats across the country have argued in favor of allowing non-physicians to perform an abortion, so it is disingenuous of them to now complain of the unavailability of physicians at abortion clinics.

On the same day Democrats voted against the bill to provide health care for babies who survive an abortion, they voted against a resolution condemning violence against crisis pregnancy centers and churches following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. They said the bill should also condemn violence against abortion clinics.

These are the same people who routinely condemn the January 6 riot—where the only person who died that day was an unarmed female veteran protester—but never condemn the widespread violence committed by Black Lives Matter demonstrators and Antifa terrorists.

The fact is that scores of crisis pregnancy centers and churches have been blown up and desecrated in the run-up to, and following, the Dobbs decision that returned the issue of abortion to the states. No such violence has devastated abortion clinics. Indeed, what the pro-abortion side labels as “violence” against clinics includes “anti-abortion protesters congregated outside abortion clinics.” That’s what most Americans call free speech.

The lust for abortion, combined with the refusal to condemn violence against pro-life Americans, is a black mark on the Democratic Party. That almost none of them find this problematic is deeply disturbing.
