In an August 1st opinion piece for the New York Times, David Brooks once again demonstrates that his grasp on basic American principles is shockingly weak. Mr. Brooks has built an entire career writing smooth words to draw adulation from the Manhattan cocktail set, while reciprocally assuring them that their modern liberal values -- vacillating and untethered though they may be -- are morally superior to any known alternatives.
In “Marianne Williamson Knows How to Beat Trump,” Brooks, in his signature fashion, simply assumes the moral high ground -- not through the measured steps of rational argument -- but through haughty admonition. The problem, he insists, is Donald Trump: “we are all subtly corrupted while this guy is our leader.” The solution, he contends, lies in defeating him: “it falls on the Democrats to rebuild the moral infrastructure of our country.” To Brooks, Trump is the poisoned font of our moral degradation: “This election is about who we are as a people, our national character. This election is about the moral atmosphere in which we raise our children.”
Really? Is that what this election is about? Hmm. I would have thought this election is about how 23 of the 24 candidates are advocating for an America that is no longer rooted in fundamental American principles. I would have thought this election is about how Socialism -- with a capital ‘S’ -- has finally found itshost-body in one of America’s two major political parties. I would have thought this election is about the unraveling of American values (writ large, through the willful defiance of actual, existing laws); not the unraveling of American values (writ small, through the willful defiance of good manners, as they pertain to the petty and vindictive art of cyber politics).
In the safe, bubbled-up world of David Brooks, what generates moral outrage is not the lawlessness or heartlessness or recklessness of the left, but rather the vague and ill-defined ‘spiritual’ harm imposed by our bogeyman-in-chief. The real danger facing our country, Brooks wants us to believe, is not that Democrats are proposing policies that flagrantly fly in the face of our Constitution; it is that Donald Trump “is instigating a degradation of America’s soul.”
Got that? The one andonly politician who is an unabashed defender of our individual rights, our national interests, and our economic freedoms is, in fact, a foul disease infecting the American psyche. In a veritable sea of unmoored and empty vessels, the most serious concern is reserved for the anchored tugboat with lousy trim and a noisy horn.
On the flip side of Brooks’ noble-sounding warnings, candidates like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren get a pass. Apparently, neither should be feared for their various socialist plans to unravel the foundational American promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; they should merely be chided for their inability to fully recognize the monstrous cultural and moral threat presented by Donald J. Trump. Warren doesn’t raise a hair of concern for Brooks; she is but a wonky “social scientist from Harvard Law School who has a plan for everything.” Sanders is likewise innocuous; his main shortcoming being that he has been “a dialectical materialist all his life and is incapable of adjusting his economics-dominated mind-set.”
Excuse me, but what was that? --“economics-dominated mind-set”? Are we talking about the same man? Since virtually all of Bernie Sanders’s views on economics are built upon populist emotions, his mindset would far better be described as an ‘economics mood-ring’. Sanders thinks nothing at all of imposing his theoretical nonsense on others, yet, when he himself is confronted by real-world economic truisms, he does not bother to contemplate, learn, or recalculate. He simply doubles-down on his wishful thinking by having us believe that Trotsky was never in the photograph to begin with!
As for the 100-million people killed by the spiritual forebearers of Bernie Sanders, under the ruthless thumb of communism and socialism, Brooks is silent. Is he unaware of this history? Does he not take Mr. Sanders’s socialism seriously? Does he really believe that Bernie’s outcomes-based ideology would be better for America than another four years of Donald Trump? Does he trulyfear our 45th president more than he does the Green New Deal?
Though it is tempting to think that Brooks is driven more by a desire to give his fawning readers a steady diet of pabulum than he is with tackling these serious questions, I will take him at face-value. I will accept that he sincerely believes the erosion of our basic rights and freedoms is a fair price to pay for our nation’s ‘moral redemption’. I will also take Brooks at his word when, at the conclusion of his article, he puts a positive spin on the piece by sharing his notion of American values. What follows, according to Brooks, are the basic values we, as Americans, all share: Unity, Honesty, Pluralism, Sympathy, and Opportunity. (Uh… come again?)
Forgive me, but I cannot keep from chuckling at the thought of the well-educated David Brooks struggling to flush out these five words from the recesses of his mind: “Come on, David, you can do this! What words should you declare as the five, fundamental American values?” (I dare say that this is the sort of thing that can result when coastal elites have patted you on the back one too many times; the inflated sense of your intelligence prohibits you from either questioning your gut instincts, or from tapping in to the existent intelligence of others.)
For what it’s worth, none of the five words Brooks has anointed are mentioned in our ultimate ‘shared-values’ document: the Constitution. This begs the obvious question: why would anyone expend energy restating our American values when they are already on full display? The Constitution, which contains all its amendments, is eminently flexible; Mr. Brooks can campaign to change its wording at any time. But the basic values that undergird the most intelligent and ideologically sound blueprint of governance ever conceived are immutable. We are, and always should be, a nation designed to promote the equal application of liberty, law, and justice.
The lasting and resonating truth about our world’s governments is this: wherever liberty, law, and justice are enhanced, peace and prosperity ensue. Wherever liberty, law, and justice are diminished, poverty and mayhem inevitably follow. If David Brooks honestly believes that America is more threatened by Donald Trump than by the likes of Bernie, Beto, Cory, Kamala, or Elizabeth -- I cannot help him change his mind. But I can emphasize that we should never take lightly the freedoms secured and protected by the Great American Experiment. And, just as critically, we should be ever vigilant when confronted by trendy alternatives to the inherent dynamism delivered daily by the permanent revolution that is the United States of America. In the end, the inability of David Brooks to be thoughtful and honest about the real-world impact of such alternatives seems far more frightening than any danger Donald Trump could ever pose.
In the latest instance of an illegal immigrant walking around with impunity and escalating his crime spree, we have this outrageous story from the Daily Caller:
An illegal immigrant who received positive press coverage during his fight against deportation earlier this year struck and killed a father of five in Colorado on Aug. 2 while driving without a license.
According to press reports, Miguel Ramirez Valiente was charged with careless driving with a revoked license after he over-corrected his truck while driving on a state highway near Colorado Springs, hitting Sean Buchanan.
Buchanan was riding a motorcycle when he was hit by Ramirez Valiente, who came to the U.S. from El Salvador 14 years ago.
Ramirez Valiente has several prior charges on his arrest record.
According to a CBS affiliate in Denver, the man had previously been in the news, sympathetically portayed by church activists as a model illegal, deserving of no deportation. The only injustice, in fact, was that he was being ordered shipped home. He got his sanctuary, and the media bought and broadcast the whole thing lock stock and barrel.
Look at that modern-church podium. Look at those head-tilting concerned clerics. Look at the pompous and pecksniffian piety, all parties around the man convinced they were protecting a saint against the horror of horrors of him having to live in his homeland of El Salvador, based on what they claimed was a flimsy and capricious enforcement effort from a minor and inconsequential crime. Here's what Daily Caller reported was the true story:
CNN did not cite Ramirez Valiente’s rap sheet when the network published a sympathetic profile of him in January, after he took refuge in a Colorado Springs church to avoid deportation.
Ramirez Valiente said during a press conference at the church that he came to the U.S. 14 years ago from El Salvador, where he says he fled gang violence.
He first came on the radar of U.S. immigration authorities in 2011, following a traffic stop. He claimed in the press conference that he had been fighting his immigration case for eight years, and that he had never missed an immigration hearing.
Oh such a model illegal who, after all that, deserves to stay, well ahead of other legal immigrants waiting in line. The Daily Caller points out that behind that phony "narrative" CNN was concealing a full blown crime spree. The illegal was the good guy, and anyone trying to throw him out for his crimes was a bad guy.
Now a father of five is dead and what we see now is that both the press and the church activists were running a dirty protection racket for criminals. The illegal should have been thrown out years ago. The defenders of this illegal now have blood on their hands.
The Daily Mail tried to put out a counter-narrative that the man killed was some kind of Darwin award case, based on his belief that illegals should be permitted to stay here, too. All they proved, actually was that the father of five was a kind man and tthe Daily Mail is just a tad obnoxious. Its narrative shows the extent to which press coverage about illegals has been unnaturally in the tree of open-borders activists. Illegals, no matter how many crimes they have committed, are always portrayed in the press as the good guys and their crimes are either concealed or minimized (often as some little speeding traffic stop) when in reality, there are often a string of crimes involved. It takes a lot to get someone deported, yet when it happens, law enforcement is always portrayed as evil and the illegal is the protagonist.
Fact is, we have seen this idealization of illegals almost constantly in the press, maybe most famously in the story of the caravaner, Lady Frijoles, Mirian Zelaya, who was defended in the press as a put-upon migrant for calling Mexican tortillas and beans donated by volunteers food fit for pigs. That enabled Zelaya to get let in to this country ahead of the other waiting migrants, after which she then got busted pretty quickly for assaulting someone in Dallas.
It highlights the mass media distortions about illegal immigrants, who like any people who leave their homes are often misfits and within that category, frequently criminals. The crime stats show that our prisons are full of illegals well out of proportion to their numbers and that one crime from an illegal often leads to another. Cross the border illegally and the next stop is stealing someone's Social Security number. Next up, marriage fraud. Or crimes of disorder, fueled by impunity as judges throw out cases to prevent deportation. For some, the pattern extends to complete lawlessness and as in this case, heads up to murder.
The press has a lot to answer for this. Kudos to the CBS affiliate for exposing this revolting treacle about this illegal. CNN and all of the mass media who refuse to do their job and report objectively need to be held up to public scorn for it. They aren't on the people's side, they are nothing shills for illegals and the criminal cartels who profit from them.
Joe Biden is now positioned as the defender of the Obama administration’s wretched track record in office. His sole source of electoral strength among Democrats, particularly among African-Americans, is his identification with the nation’s first black president. But that connection is also turning out to have a considerable downside, as the leftward shift of the party’s activist base leaves Obama’s 8 years looking too measured for the radicals and the Democrat contenders pandering to them. Meanwhile, the stark reality of a failed presidency haunts Biden’s appeal to swing voters.
Yesterday at the Iowa State Fair, Biden was asked about the Obama administration’s China policy and he chose to boast about its big achievement being getting China to sign the Paris Climate Accord (which he at first called the “peace accord”):
Asked what the Obama-Biden Administration did in 8 years to stand up to China, first thing Biden cites is getting China to join the Paris Climate Accord.
A reminder, the Accord was non-binding agreement with no enforcement mechanisms.
This is a pathetic joke. Not only are there no enforcement mechanisms, as Zach Parkinson notes, China was allowed to continue to increase its carbon dioxide emissions until 2030, which was called its “peak” year, after which emissions could decline. China has been energetically constructing coal-fired generation capacity in the years since signing the accord – all within the terms of its commitment.
Beto O’Rourke says we have only 10 years, with other hysterics offering other numbers for our doom either similar or even lower. This is now an unassailable "truth" among the Democrats' base, and the major engine of the party's demand for strict government control of all economic activity, the ultimate objective of statists.
Choosing this fig leaf of a meaningless accomplishment in the face of China’s aggressive policies of intellectual property theft, domestic market protectionism and currency manipulation, not to mention its military expansionism in the South China Sea is pathetic, especially compared to President Trump’s standing up to China.
Even though he continues to lead the rest of the Democrat field in the polls, Biden is an extraordinarily weak candidate, even before we factor in the infirmities of age and his limited intellect.
The motivation for all for this is even worse. They don’t have compassion for these illegal aliens. That’s not their primary motivation. Their primary motivation is the desire to acquire raw political power. That’s what it’s all about. [Emphasis added]
If you limit votes to American citizens, Democrats do not fair to well with us. So what they’re trying to do is import people who do not understand the foundational principles that have combined to make America a great nationand who … are much more likely to vote Democrat once Democrats give them voting rights. [Emphasis added]
Brooks detailed how California, the state where former President Ronald Reagan was governor, has been forever changed due to the country’s mass illegal and legal immigration policy that imports about 1.5 million foreign nationals a year.

Joe Biden Vows Flood Of Immigration: U.S. Can 'In A Heartbeat' Import 2 Million More Migrants
Volume 90%
2:46
Former Vice President and leading 2020 Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden is vowing to greatly increase the number of legal immigrants admitted to the United States every year.
In a speech to the Asian and Latino Coalition PAC, Biden promised to increase the level of legal immigration to the country beyond the roughly 1.2 million legal immigrants that are admitted every year, booming the foreign-born population to an unprecedented 45 million — a 108-year record high.
Specifically, Biden said the U.S. can “in a heartbeat” import another two million immigrants today.
Biden said:
We could afford to take in a heartbeat another two million people. The idea that a country of 330 million people is cannot absorb people who are in desperate need … is absolutely bizarre … I would also move to increase the total number of immigrants able to come to the United States. [Emphasis added]
In addition to an increase in legal immigration levels, Biden said his national immigration plan would ensure that all 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living across the U.S. receive amnesty and a pathway to American citizenship.
Likewise, Biden said it is “immigration” that has “built this country,” reiterating the claim that the U.S. is a “nation of immigrants,” calling it “a fact.”
Biden’s comments come after the latest Harvard/Harris Poll finds that swing voters by a majority, as well as nearly every other demographic group, say they are less likely to support a 2020 presidential candidate who wants more illegal and legal immigration to the U.S.
Currently, the nation’s Washington, DC-imposed mass legal and illegal immigration policy — whereby at least 1.5 million unskilled foreign nationals are admitted to the U.S. every year — is a boon to corporate executives, Wall Street, big business, and multinational corporations, as America’s working and middle class have their wealth redistributed to the country’s top earners through wage stagnation.
Research by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has discovered that immigration to the country shifts about $500 billion in wages away from working and middle-class Americans toward new arrivals and economic elites. Similarly, research by Steven Camarotta has found that every one percent increase in the immigrant composition of an occupation’s labor force reduces Americans’ hourly wages by 0.4 percent. Every one percent increase in the immigrant workforce reduces Americans’ overall wages by 0.8 percent.
In the last decade alone, the U.S. has admitted ten million legal immigrants, forcing American workers to compete against a growing population of low-wage foreign workers. Meanwhile, if legal immigration continues, there will be 69 million foreign-born residents living in the U.S. by 2060 and a total population of more than 404 million residents.
