Batten down the hearings: President
Obama’s nominee to head up the Labor Department is expected to get a grilling
on Thursday before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions
Committee.
Thomas Perez
has come under fire, especially from House and Senate Republicans, over the
motivation for decisions he made while serving as head of the Justice
Department’s Civil Rights Division.
In particular,
GOP lawmakers have sharply criticized Perez for what they say is a questionable
deal he struck with the city of St. Paul, Minn., which agreed to scrap a
housing discrimination lawsuit in exchange for Justice not pursuing two
separate whistleblower housing cases.
The House GOP
issued a 63-page report on Sunday after months of probing
into the issue saying his decisions cost the nation $200 million.
"There is
much more to the story of how Assistant Attorney General Perez manipulated the
rule of law and pushed the limits of justice to make this deal happen," said
the report from Sen. Chuck Grassley and Reps. Darrell Issa (Calif.) and Rep.
Bob Goodlatte (Va.).
"This
offer was inappropriate and potentially violated Perez’s duty of loyalty to his
client, the United States."
Perez has
defended his actions, saying he asked the city to drop the case because he was
worried that an unfavorable ruling from the Supreme Court would ultimately hurt
the government’s chances of winning housing discrimination cases.
The Justice
Department has backed him up and has said he was cleared to offer the
deal.
But Republicans
say Perez misled senior officials about his intentions and that he tried to
cover up the true reasons for intervening to stop the cases.
Top Democrats
on the House Oversight Committee issued a strong rebuttal, saying the GOP
report "was riddled with numerous factual errors, broad
mischaracterizations and stark omissions."
"The
overwhelming evidence obtained during the investigation indicates that he was
properly performing his role as head of the Civil Rights Division, effectively
representing the position of the United States government, and advancing the
national interest in combating discrimination," wrote Rep. Elijah Cummings
(D-Md.), ranking member on the House Oversight Committee.
Democrats say
Perez didn't make a secret deal, try to cover up the agreement or overstep his
authority.
Perez will get
his chance on Thursday to clear the air about the accusations with the aim of
convincing lawmakers that he is the right person to take over for former Labor
Secretary Hilda Solis.

the hearing, Dr. Rakesh Kochar, Associate Director for Research at the Pew
Hispanic Center, testified that in the year following the official end of the
recession (June 2009), foreign-born workers gained 656,000 jobs while
native-born workers lost an additional 1.2 million jobs.”
"We
have a situation where the job market — the bottom fell out, yet we kept legal
immigration relatively high without even a national debate," he said.
"As a consequence, a lot of the job growth has been going to
immigrants."
Mr.
Obama did take action this year to grant many illegal immigrants up to 30 years
of age a tentative legal status that prevents them from being deported and
authorizes them to work in the United States.
Some
Republicans in Congress have criticized Mr. Obama's policy, saying it violates
his powers and will mean more competition for scarce jobs.

represent American workers. What you need to know is that this longtime
open--borders sympathizer has always had a rather radical definition of
"American." At a Latino voter registration project conference in Los
Angeles many years ago, Solis asserted to thunderous applause, "We are all
Americans, whether you are legalized or not." (BUT THE PROBLEM IS… ONLY
MEXICANS GET THE JOBS!)
That's right. The woman in charge of enforcing our
employment laws doesn't give a hoot about our immigration laws ---- or about
the fundamental distinction between those who followed the rules in pursuit of
the American dream and those who didn't.

Labor Secretary Pledges Help For Illegal Workers

Two
months after the Department of Labor launched a special program to assist and
protect illegal immigrants in the U.S. the Obama cabinet official who heads the
agency is personally encouraging undocumented workers to report employers that
don’t pay them fairly.
In
a Spanish-language public service announcement, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis
assures that “every worker in America has a right to be paid fairly, whether
documented or not.” Illegal aliens who are not getting fair wages are
encouraged to call a new hotline set up by the agency on a new “Podemos Ayudar” (We
Can Help) web page designed to administer worker protection laws and ensure
that employees are properly paid “regardless of immigration status.”
In
the short video, also posted in English, Solis tells illegal immigrants that it’s
a “serious problem” when workers in this country are not paid fairly and that
all workers have the right to receive their salary regardless of immigration
status. She encourages those who are not to call the new hotline and assures
it’s free and confidential. “Podemos ayudar,” (we can help), Solis guarantees
at the end of the brief segment.
The
Labor Secretary’s new message is part of a campaign launched a few months ago
to help illegal immigrant workers in the U.S., who she refers to as “vulnerable” and
“underpaid.” At least 1,000 new
field investigators have been deployed to reach out to Latino laborers in areas
with large numbers of illegal alien employees and the agency will focus on
enforcing labor and wage laws in industries that typically hire lots of illegal
aliens without reporting anyone to federal immigration authorities.
For
a government agency to protect law breakers in this fashion may seem unbelievable
but not if you consider the source. A Former California congresswoman, Solis
has close ties to the influential La Raza movement that advocates open borders
and rights for illegal immigrants. She made the protection of undocumented
workers a major priority upon being named Labor Secretary, assuring illegal
aliens that “if you work in this country, you are protected by our laws.”
"While the declining job market in the United States
may be discouraging some would-be border crossers, a flow of illegal aliens
continues unabated, with many entering the United States as drug-smuggling
"mules."

This report is another example of the obscene concentration of
wealth in America that has raised inequality to a level not seen in more than a
century. Wages for workers in the United States are at their lowest level since
the 1950s.
