A top House Democrat is raising eyebrows with his suggestion
that, like an alcoholic, the first step presumptive Republican nominee Mitt
Romney needs to take in addressing his struggles with Latino voters is to admit
"when they've got a problem."
“Mitt Romney has a
Latino problem,” House Democratic Caucus Vice-Chairman Xavier Becerra (Calif.)
told Univision News. “And like those who are alcoholic and go to Alcoholics
Anonymous when they’ve got a problem, Mitt Romney should go to a place where he
could learn what his problem is and really try to change his ways.”
“You’re not going to get rid of that disease that infects
you if you don’t treat it and you don’t believe it,” Becerra continued.
Recent polls show that Romney has fallen badly behind with
Latino voters, the fastest growing demographic group in the American
electorate. A survey released Wednesday by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal
showed President Barack Obama with a 34 percentage point lead among Latinos.
That gap is expected to play a major impact in swing states
like New Mexico and Colorado, where Democrats believe their advantage with
Latino voters could tip the scales.
Romney has released Spanish versions of his first two general
election ads and appeared earlier this week at a forum for Latino business
owners in Washington in an effort to court minority voters.
The Romney campaign also condemned Becerra's remarks in a
statement to Univision.
“These comments are unfortunate, but they aren’t surprising
given the desperate and negative reelection campaign President Obama is
running,” said Romney adviser Albert Martinez. “Democrats are lashing out with
outrageous rhetoric because they’re frustrated at the reality that President Obama
broke his promise to Hispanic voters while his party controlled Congress.”

Congressman
Derided for Laughing at Suggestion to Recite the Pledge of Allegiance
A
Republican candidate for Congress in California is calling on U.S. Rep. Xavier
Becerra to "clarify his reaction" after the Democrat was caught on a
YouTube video laughing at a suggestion that the Pledge of Allegiance be recited
prior to a union meeting in Los Angeles.
If
the Pledge of Allegiance is a laughing matter, then the joke may be on a
California congressman.
A
Republican candidate for Congress in California is calling on U.S. Rep. Xavier
Becerra to "clarify his reaction" after the Democrat was caught on a
YouTube video laughing at a suggestion that the Pledge of Allegiance be recited
prior to a union meeting in Los Angeles.
The 46-second video was captured by an
unidentified staffer who accompanied candidate Ari David to a Service Employees
International Union meeting on Saturday. By early Tuesday, the video had
been viewed roughly 10,000 times.
David will not be opposing
Becerra in November; he is running to replace Democratic U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman
in a neighboring district. He said he attended the meeting in Becerra's
district in hopes of meeting with Waxman, who he said was an invited guest.
On the video, a man off
camera can be heard saying: "I'm here for Ari David for Congress. Can we
start this meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance?"
Hilarity ensues, most notably
on behalf of an unidentified woman standing behind a lectern. Becerra, seated
on stage, can be seen smiling and stifling his laughter as he bends slightly
forward in his chair.
"No, I'm serious,"
David's staffer continues. "Congressman, shouldn't we say the Pledge of
Allegiance if we all want to be citizens? Wouldn't that be appropriate to say
the Pledge of Allegiance?"
"Sure, of course,"
the woman on stage replies. "OK, let's go for it -- you lead."
The pledge is then recited by
everyone in the room, followed by raucous applause.
David told Fox News he found
Becerra's reaction "completely inappropriate," adding: "I was
stunned as an American that one of our members of Congress would act that way.
"Considering these
people want immigration reform, shouldn't they say the national anthem before a
public meeting with their elected official there?"
If Becerra thought the
situation was comical, it was the congressman's "prerogative" to
laugh, David said.
"Is it that offensive of
a notion to be asked to say the Pledge of Allegiance?" the candidate
continued.
Becerra defended the reaction
in a statement to Fox News, saying:
"On the morning of
February 20th, I was invited to address some 500 people gathered to discuss the
human tragedy of a broken immigration system and the need to fix it. At some
point during that meeting, a political operative for a congressional campaign
asked if we could recite the pledge of allegiance. The meeting was already
under way and the question was unexpected. It took us all by surprise. When the
speaker explained that he was serious and asked me specifically if we could say
the pledge, I said yes and gestured to the moderator, who then led the entire
gathering in reciting the pledge."

For
the second consecutive year taxpayers in a single U.S. county will dish out
more than half a billion dollars just to cover the welfare and food-stamp costs
of illegal immigrants.
Los
Angeles County, the nation’s most populous, may be in the midst of a dire
financial crisis but somehow there are plenty of funds for illegal aliens. In
January alone, anchor babies born to the county’s illegal immigrants collected
more than $50 million in welfare benefits. At that
rate the cash-strapped county will pay around $600 million this year to provide
illegal aliens’ offspring with food stamps and other welfare perks.
THE EXORBITANT
FIGURE DOES NOT INCLUDE THE ENORMOUS COST OF EDUCATING, MEDICALLY TREATING, OR
INCARCERATING ILLEGALS ALIENS. THIS COSTS THE COUNTY AN ADDITIONAL ONE BILLION
DOLLARS.
The
exorbitant figure, revealed this week by a county supervisor, doesn’t even
include the enormous cost of educating, medically treating or incarcerating
illegal aliens in the sprawling county of about 10 million residents. Los
Angeles County annually spends more than $1 billion for those combined
services, including $500 million for healthcare and $350 million for public
safety.
About
a quarter of the county’s welfare and food stamp issuances go to parents who
reside in the United States illegally and collect benefits for their anchor
babies, according to the figures from the county’s Department of Social
Services. In 2009 the tab ran $570 million and this year’s figure is expected
to increase by several million dollars.
Illegal immigration continues to have a “catastrophic
impact on Los Angeles County taxpayers,” the veteran county
supervisor (Michael Antonovich) who revealed the information has said. The former fifth-grade
history teacher has repeatedly come under fire from his liberal counterparts
for publicizing statistics that confirm the devastation illegal immigration has
had on the region. Antonovich, who has served on the board for nearly three
decades, represents a portion of the county that is roughly twice the size of
Rhode Island and has about 2 million residents.
His
district is simply a snippet of a larger crisis. Nationwide, Americans pay
around $22 billion annually to provide illegal immigrants with welfare benefits
that include food assistance programs such as free school lunches in public
schools, food stamps and a nutritional program (known as WIC)
for low-income women and their children. Tens of billions more are spent on
other social services, medical care, public education and legal costs such as
incarceration and public defenders.

Anchor Babies Grab One Quarter of
Welfare Dollars in LA Co
The anchor baby scam has proven lucrative for illegal aliens in Los Angeles County, at considerable cost to our own poor and downtrodden legal citizenry.
The numbers show that more than $50 million in CalWORKS benefits and food stamps for January went to children born in the United States whose parents are in the country without documentation. This represents approximately 23 percent of the total benefits under the state welfare and food stamp programs, Antonovich said.
"When you add this to $350 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for health care, the total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year -- not including the millions of dollars for education," Antonovich said.
I love children and I'm all for compassion -- smart, teach-them-to-fish compassion. But when laws, the Constitution, and enforcement allow illegal aliens (the operative word here being "illegal") to insinuate themselves into our nation and bleed us of our precious financial resources, then laws, the Constitution and enforcement need to be changed.
