Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Welcomes Joe Biden: Talk of City’s Rampant Gun Crime Avoided

President Joe Biden was greeted by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) on Wednesday when he arrived for a speaking appointment at an Illinois community college. The city’s rampant gun violence however was not on the public agenda, with Biden instead choosing to talk about “human infrastructure” and his American Families Plan.

AP reports the president set out for the Chicago suburbs to bolster support for both his bipartisan infrastructure deal and a broader package he expects will be passed with only Democratic votes.

In his first visit to Illinois since winning the White House, Biden’s theme of family happiness and light was designed to resonate with suburban parents, college graduates and the working poor.

“There’s a lot of work ahead of us to finish the job, but we’re going to get it done,” Biden said in a 31-minute address he self-deprecatingly suggested was less than entertaining but important. “We’re going to reimagine what our economy and our future could be.”

Absent from his public remarks was any mention of the Chicago police officer and two federal agents shot on the Southwest Side hours before he landed at O’Hare Airport, the Chicago Sun-Times lamented.

That chance was missed even as the deaths mount and community frustration at the lack of action by Lightfoot builds, leading one Democrat alderman last month to call Chicago “a city under siege.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki assured reporters Biden brought up the shootings with Lightfoot after she greeted him at O’Hare, however that exchange will remain private.

“President Biden expressed his personal support for the two ATF officials and the Chicago police officer who were shot earlier today,” Psaki said.

“He reiterated his commitment to working with the mayor and leaders in Chicago in the fight against gun violence and conveyed that the Department of Justice would soon be in touch about the strike force announced just a few weeks ago that will be working with cities like Chicago.”

Lightfoot’s office did not respond to a request for comment on the mayor’s conversation with the president, according to the Chicago Tribune.

As Breitbart News reported, 100 people were shot, 17 fatally, last Friday night through Monday morning adding to the over 330 people killed in Chicago during the first six months of 2021 alone.

The Sun-Times observed there were over 1,892 shootings in Chicago January 1, 2021, through June 28, 2021, a 12 percent increase over the same time frame last year.

In all the number of homicides and shootings in Chicago spiked dramatically in 2020, ending with more bloodshed than in all but one year in more than two decades.

Despite the death and suffering, Biden stuck to his “happy” theme Wednesday and touted the proposed changes the country could make to child care.

“All the data shows — if you’re able to take your child to work … you get increased productivity for the parent. … It really makes a … difference in terms of generating economic growth as well,” the president said. “It’s a win-win.”

Getting the package of proposals passed will be harder than talking about it.

On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Biden and his fellow Democrats are in for “a hell of a fight” over the passage of the plan.

The Sun-Times reports Biden dismissed a question about the Republican’s statement while in the children’s learning center, saying the Senate minority leader “loves our programs” and claimed he has bragged about them back home in Kentucky.

Police in San Francisco are investigating an apparent handbag robbery that occurred at a Neiman Marcus store Monday.

“Authorities said the robbery happened around 5:49 p.m. at the high-end department store located in Union Square,” KTVU reported.

However, when officers arrived at the scene, the suspects were gone.

Witnesses told authorities the incident happened right before the store’s closing and claimed the suspects smashed display cases and grabbed items off the racks before leaving.

The outlet shared video footage captured from outside the store of ten people, some apparently carrying items, dashing out the establishment’s doors:

The suspects appeared to get into waiting vehicles and flee the area as bystanders watched from the sidewalk.

Police have not made any arrests in connection with the occurrence, but are “analyzing videos and speaking with witnesses” to identify those involved, a spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.

Breitbart News reported Friday the crime wave in San Fransisco has continued as police presence dwindles and thieves loot stores, the issue “causing Target properties in the Bay Area to announce they are cutting hours to reduce losses.”

Meanwhile, a recent poll from the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce found residents are thinking about moving out of the city because of the rise in crime and homelessness.

“According to the poll, more than 40 percent of the respondents said they plan to move out of the city in the next few years,” the Breitbart News article read.

During a recent interview on CNN Newsroom, San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Ahsha Safai touched on the retail theft issues and said, “when we do have police in those areas, the crime drops dramatically,” and that was why “We’re putting more resources back into our police department to ensure that they have the appropriate staffing levels.”

Following the recent incident, Neiman Marcus said in a statement, “The safety and welfare of our associates and customers is our top priority, and we’re relieved to report that no one was harmed in the incident. We’re cooperating with the SFPD in their investigation.”

VIDEO: Homeless Man Allegedly Attacked at Venice Beach amid Encampment Cleanup

A video posted Friday reportedly showed a homeless man being attacked as he sat on the ground at the Venice Beach boardwalk, according to Fox News.

In the clip, a person wearing a dark-colored vest appeared to punch the man in his head and shoulder while another individual wearing a black hoodie stood nearby.

“Bitch! Go on! Touch me in my goddamn titties!” the person in the vest apparently told the man before kicking him. The man eventually got up and walked away.

Concerns from residents, business owners, and law enforcement have increased in the months after the tent encampments on the beach grew and issues continued to plague the area, the Fox report said:

Since the expansion of the Venice beach encampment, authorities have fielded reports of shootings, arson, assault and harassment. Some residents previously told Fox News they have refrained from going to the beach after certain times or altogether.

In response, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has dispatched deputies with his department’s Homeless Outreach Services Team to address the homeless issue in Venice. Last month, he asked county leaders to declare a state of emergency in response.

Two weeks prior to his request, a Venice business owner said a security guard at his store was attacked and stabbed with a bottle by a homeless person once he was told he could not consume alcohol on the premises, according to Fox.

“Today in Venice we are completely on our own,” Bob Carlson commented during a June 21 press conference. “You don’t realize how much you need the police until they’re not there. Until they’re prevented from doing their job. Thank God the sheriff is willing to intervene.”

Outreach workers Friday finished the initial phase of the Venice Beach cleanup and persuaded dozens of homeless to move into shelters, the Los Angeles Times reported:

As the cleanup plan got underway, an anticipated crackdown by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies never materialized. Sheriff Alex Villanueva on Wednesday walked back earlier comments that were widely interpreted as a threat to arrest anyone still on the boardwalk by July 4. Villanueva said in a press conference that he was expressing a hope, not a deadline.

Breitbart News reported June 8 Villanueva declared his department would clear out the growing homeless encampments from Venice Beach by July 4.

Nearly 100 people were shot, 17 fatally, Friday night through Monday night in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago.

ABC 7 reported 98 people were shot in the time-frame of “Friday at 6 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Monday,” and 17 of those shooting victims succumbed to their wounds.

The Chicago Sun-Times listed the number of fatalities at 19.

ABC 7 pointed out that 87 people were shot during that same period over the Independence holiday in 2020.

The violence over the long weekend follows a Thursday on which 32 people were shot. Thursday’s wounded included a one-month-old girl who was shot in the head.

The violence and death has surged to such levels that Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown plans to speak at a press conference and take questions Tuesday afternoon.

On July 5, 2021, Brown tweeted: “Our officers continue to work tirelessly to keep our city safe. As of today, Chicago Police Department has recovered over 6,100 guns: a 26% increase from the same period last year. I commend our officers for their continued hard work during these challenging times for law enforcement.”

The Sun-Times observed there were over 1,892 shootings in Chicago January 1, 2021, through June 28, 2021, a 12 percent increase over the same time frame last year.

Over 330 people were killed in Chicago during the first six months of 2021.

Ready for Soviet-style black markets?

A story is told (Who knows if it's true? It was long before the internet) about how residents of the former Soviet Union bought and sold vegetables.  Comrades could buy them from government-run stores at state-mandated prices, but the produce there was scarce and unattractive.  The other choice was the black market, which thrived as it always does under Marxist governments.  Old Russian ladies kept gardens, a necessity in a land whose soil is not quite adequate to feed its population.  They took their lovely produce to undisclosed locations everyone knew about, to sell at high prices.  At the end of the day, they returned home with everything they didn't sell and ate it.

Markets are different under Marxism.

In modern-day California, run by Marxists, we find the city of San Francisco, run by Marxists, all of whom have chosen to hasten the Revolution rather than serve the public.  Among the ways they do this is to allow theft.  Granted, only theft of a certain dollar value is allowed (in contrast to the Eighth Commandment, which does not set a threshold), but the amount, about a thousand American dollars, is high enough that a thief could hardly exceed it unless he made off with a Harley or a diamond ring.

Perhaps you've seen the video of the bicycle-mounted thief ransacking a drugstore and carrying off his loot in a trash bag.  He was not eligible for prosecution.  Astonishing, is it not?

Perhaps you've also seen the video of the gang of thieves who smashed display cases at the prestigious Neiman Marcus and fled in a waiting Infiniti, each carrying a designer handbag?  For all intents and purposes, they violated the law no more than you or I would have if we'd paid for those same bags with hundred-dollar bills.

The drugstore had security personnel, visible on camera.  Neiman Marcus?  Many, no doubt.  They were as worthless an interpreter for the deaf at a Biden speech, because none of it made any sense in the first place.  When theft is legal, retail commerce is impractical.

Here is what might easily happen: the stores in lawless, God-forsaken places run by Marxists, such as San Francisco, will close.  Any small, family-owned ones still remaining will go first.  No one can risk his future on the whims of socialists.  Ask any tobacco-grower who fled 1960s Cuba.  They will be followed by lower-margin corporate outlets: dollar stores, drugstores, and food stores.  Even large supermarkets operate at less than 3% profit.  That won't allow many $1,000 thefts.  Finally, high-margin places like Neiman Marcus will shutter.  Their profits are not unlimited, nor their patience infinite.  The process is well underway.  Security costs for retailers are unprecedented, yet theft is still at intolerable levels.  What else could happen when it carries no penalty?  The rule of law, for the store operator, at least, has ended, and barbarism is the inevitable result. 

Should all those store closings occur, it will not deter Marxists in government — not in the slightest.  For decades, "food deserts" have plagued Democrat-run cities that could not support honest enterprise.  Total retail deserts?  That's the next logical step.  It's not a problem for the left.  In fact, it's a blessing in disguise.

The first replacements for traditional retail as a source for food, medicine, and other necessities of life would be online retailers, already the largest in the world.  Bezos and Co. are good socialists, despite their multi-billionaire status.  Their unmatchable delivery network enables them to bring goods into the desert, like the camels of old.  For a while, they would be the beneficiaries of legalized theft.

Thieves wouldn't be deterred for long, though.  They have no intention of trading their labor for goods.  They want the goods you have earned through your labor.  If they can't steal them from stores, they will steal them from you: your doorstep; your mailbox; or, failing that, the delivery van bringing them to you.  Stealing $1,000 from a UPS or Amazon truck won't be prosecuted, either.  Perhaps you've already seen video of those trucks being picked clean en route.  The drivers won't be permitted to defend themselves.  Before long, there won't be any drivers, or trucks, in those cities.

Should even online retail become impossible, The Government, like that of the old USSR, will come to the aid of hapless residents with government-run stores, supported by rapidly dwindling tax revenue, at incredibly high cost.  The merchandise there will be scarce and unattractive.  Prices will be high.

There will be an alternative: the black market.  The goods will be better quality.  The prices will be even higher.  The people who run it will not tolerate theft of $1,000 — or any amount.  The black market knows how to deal with thieves.

It's all too familiar.  As Soviet émigré friends once told us, "Train runs in only one direction."

A Tale Of Two People: Black Immigrants And Black Americans


Economist Walt Williams famously wrote, "The tensions are irrelevant to the effects." Does this describe the plight of black Americans?

Despite being the greatest experiment in the history of the world, the United States possesses plenty of stains on its coat of arms. Be it the treatment of Japanese-Americans during World War II or “No Irish Need Apply” signs plastered across American cities, a diverse array of groups has fallen victim to prejudice and oppression. But no other ethnicity had it worse than black Americans, whether it was in the eras of slavery or Jim Crow. It has been a struggle for scores of generations of black U.S. citizens. Is this because America is a racist nation, or is it a result of both execrable and feel-good policy interventions that have eroded the living standards of so many black people of the last 50 years? Perhaps the answer is to study the prosperity of black immigrants.

Are Black Immigrants Thriving?

Suppose the assertions are correct and the United States is a systemically bigoted place. Should black immigrants be suffering the same fate as so many black citizens who might be fourth-generation Americans? And, if so, why are minorities migrating to the Land of the Free in immense numbers?

As of 2020, the median U.S. household income is $61,937. For white households, the median income is around $66,000, while black homes earn around $44,000. It is a massive gap between the two races. How about households comprising immigrants that come from predominantly black nations? Here is a look at their median incomes:

  • Ghanaian Americans: $69,021
  • Nigerian Americans: $68,658 (25% enjoy incomes north of $100,000)
  • Trinidadian and Tobagonian Americans: $62,120
  • Jamaican Americans: $62,044
  • Haitian Americans: $57,451

Other studies also have compared immigrants and people with the same skillset who did not emigrate. Again, the results were astonishing: Relocating the average worker from his or her home country to the United States without any additional education or training immediately and significantly raises that person’s wages, whether that individual is from Ghana or Haiti.

black immigrationEven on the education file, black immigrants take full advantage of America’s higher education system. A 2004 report highlighted that most of the black students attending Harvard University were not native-born Americans. In 2013, 25% of the 120 black students at the Harvard Business School were Nigerian. As The Economist noted in 2015: “Nigerians abroad are generally keen on education.”

Many measurements point to an inconvenient truth for the left: Black immigrants are ahead of American whites on a broad array of fronts, including economically and educationally. But if someone coming from West Africa or the West Indies can thrive under American institutions, why are American-born blacks falling through the cracks of these same pillars of U.S. society?

Legendary economist Thomas Sowell asked a critical question in his book, Wealth, Poverty and Politics, “If white racism is the cause of lower educational and economic outcomes for black Americans, why are black Nigerians exempt?” Could it be the inept century-old record of the government that has substantially hindered black Americans’ growth?

How Statists Devastated The Black Community

Slavery in America and throughout the globe already has been well-documented. It is an established fact that slavery is an abhorrent practice that has no place in a civilized society. It will forever be a scar on American history. But government policies of the last 100 years, from redlining to hourly compensation, have also inflicted pain and crippled multiple generations of black Americans. Measures with benevolent intentions manufactured a generational paralysis for a substantial portion of the native black population. Even when black families succeeded independently without a handout from bureaucrats and politicians, it was the state that put a stop to their flourishing lives, either directly or indirectly.

The history of minimum wage laws is not as gracious and munificent as progressives would pontificate. Labor wages – at home and abroad – possess sour histories.

Minimum wageFor example, as the Cato Institute noted, “the 1931 Davis-Bacon Act, requiring ‘prevailing’ wages on federally assisted construction projects, was supported by the idea that it would keep contractors from using ‘cheap colored labor’ to underbid contractors using white labor.” Sowell’s research with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution spotlighted that the province of British Columbia approved a minimum wage law in 1925 that would price Japanese immigrants out of jobs in the lucrative lumber history. During the era of apartheid, South Africa’s white labor unions pushed for a minimum wage law to be applied “to keep black workers from taking jobs away from white unionized workers by working for less than the union pay scale.” In 2010, South African workers complain about local labor laws that price them out of employment opportunities, according to The New York Times.

Fast forward to the present, and the wage floor is still disproportionately hurting black youth. By 1948, most places in the United States had a minimum wage law due to the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Incidentally, this was the last time that the unemployment rate for black youth (16- and 17-year-old males) would be below 10%. From 1953 to 1970, the jobless figure for this demographic was never below 20%. From 1971 to 1994, black youth unemployment was above 30%. From then, it has been on an upward trajectory. Advocates of minimum wage laws might not consider this to be a component of systemic racism, but it is a policy that unintentionally impacts an inordinate amount of black people.

Economist Milton Friedman famously opined:

“The effects have been concentrated on the groups that the do-gooders would most like to help. The people who have been hurt most by the minimum wage laws are the blacks. I have often said that the most anti-black law on the books of this land is the minimum wage law.”

Over the years, the government has attempted to rectify its actions. Welfareaffirmative action, and, at the present moment, reparations are just some of the remedies that have turned out to be nostrums for native blacks. Once again, these efforts only further inflame their plight, whether welfare dependency through multiple generations or poor performances in the top universities.

The empirical data often point to a disastrous trend of academic miscarriages for minority students. Or, as Sowell calls it, “the human tragedy.” Instead of focusing on achievement, too many post-secondary institutions emphasize race. When black students who score high marks in mathematics in secondary school and are admitted to MIT or Stanford under the pretense of affirmative action, a substantial number were unable to graduate, despite the likelihood of graduating with honors at most other post-secondary facilities.

The unintended consequences of the panoply of progressive goodies have been on display for the last century.

The Failure Of The Welfare State

Welfare acolytes refuse to concede that their public benefits have unsuccessfully delivered social justice. Instead, the welfare state has served millions of Americans – and not only native blacks – with an abundance of cruelty. Malcolm X routinely stated that the white liberal, who had posed as an ally, failed the black community. But it is leftist orthodoxy that has failed native blacks and America as a whole.

Be it a booming Black Wall Street or a rising middle class in 1940s Harlem, when black Americans are left to themselves without the oppressive boot of the state or the Faustian bargain of the progressives, they do remarkably well. The same applies to every other group that had faced adversity throughout time, whether it was the Jews or Asian-Americans. The struggle of black Americans should be a cautionary tale for government, either as a friend or foe. When black immigrants come from broken and corrupt lands, they know well enough to refrain from trusting the authorities.

As former President Ronald Reagan quipped, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: “I’m from the Government, and I’m here to help.”

7 Things to Know About the ‘Rise of the Moors’ Militia Group

Members of the “Rise of the Moors” armed militia appeared in a Massachusetts court Tuesday after being charged with multiple crimes over the Independence Day weekend. The defendants denied the court’s jurisdiction and claimed to have committed no crimes.

Massachusetts State Police arrested 11 people on Saturday who allegedly claimed to be members of a group known as the “Rise of the Moors,” Breitbart Texas reported. The arrests followed an hours-long standoff with the armed members on Interstate 95 near Wakefield after suspects reportedly said they do not “recognize our laws.”

What do we know about the “Rise of the Moors?”

1: Who are the identified members of the group?

Boston.com identified the following members of the group who police arrested on Saturday:

  • Jamhal Tavon Sanders Latimer (also known as Jamhal Talib Abdullah Bey), 29, of Providence, RI
  • Robert Rodriguez, 21, of the Bronx, NY
  • Wilfredo Hernandez (also known as Will Musa), 23, of the Bronx, NY
  • Alban El Curraugh, 27, of the Bronx, NY
  • Aaron Lamont Johnson (also known as Tarrif Sharif Bey), 29, of Detroit, MI
  • Quinn Cumberlander, 40, of Pawtucket, RI
  • Lamar Dow, 34, of the Bronx, NY
  • Conrad Pierre, 29, of Baldwin, NY
  • Two men, who refused to identify themselves, were listed by police as John Doe I and John Doe II.

2: What charges do the arrested members face following the nine-hour standoff?
According to the Boston Herald, the men are charged with the following in a Massachusetts court:

  • Eight counts of unlawful possession of a firearm;
  • Unlawful possession of ammunition;
  • Possession of a high-capacity magazine;
  • Use of body armor in commission of a crime;
  • Improper storage of firearms in a vehicle; and,
  • Conspiracy to commit a crime.
  • Three of the men, and a 17-year-old male, also face charges of supplying a false name to police.

3:  The members of the group claim the government has no jurisdiction over their affairs.

During a Zoom hearing, multiple members of the group claimed the court has no jurisdiction over them, the Boston Herald report continued. Several members provided fake names. Two refused to provide any names at all.

During the nine-hour standoff, the members of the group told police they were not carrying gun licenses and they did not recognize state laws, The Washington Post reported.

4: Possible connection to ‘Moorish Sovereign’ groups.

The “Rise of the Moors” is based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, according to its websiteThe Washington Post reports a claim from Mark Pitcavage, a senior research fellow at the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, that the men who were arrested are “adherents of the ‘Moorish Sovereign Citizens.'” They are part of a group that reportedly believes they are part of a sovereign nation and are thus not subject to U.S. law.

Moors are not ‘Sovereign Citizens’, as sovereignty does not stand alone, sovereignty and nationality can be considered synonymous. The record show that the Moors are the organic or original sovereigns of this land – America. When we declare our nationality as Moorish Americans we are taking back the position as the aboriginal people of the land, to which the sovereign power is vested in.

5: Claims by the group about police, government, and violence during the armed standoff with state police.

A spokesman for the Rise of the Moors posted claims on social media that “We’re not anti-government, we’re not anti-police, we’re not sovereign citizens, we’re not Black-identity extremists.” During the video, he repeatedly told the officers they would do nothing to escalate the situation or threaten the officers.

“You can imagine 11 armed individuals standing with long guns slung on an interstate highway at two in the morning certainly raises concerns and is not consistent with the firearms laws we have in Massachusetts,” Massachusetts State Police Colonel Christopher Mason said during a press conference over the weekend. “I understand that they have a different perspective on that. I appreciate that perspective. I disagree with that perspective.”

State police officials warned, “No threats were made, but these men should be considered armed and dangerous.”

6: Claim of Morocco/U.S. treaty as a basis for sovereignty.

The group claims their sovereignty is based on what retired FBI special agent Ken Gray called a “bogus treaty,” NBC 10 in Boston reported.

“No such treaty existed, but they claim there was a treaty that allowed them to operate in the country without being citizens of the country,” Gray explained.

On their website, the Rise of the Moors cite a letter from President George Washington to the Sultan of Morocco in 1789 that reads (in part, emphasis original):

The members of the group who appeared before the Massachusetts judge pleaded not guilty. The judge ordered the adult men held without bail pending a “dangerousness hearing” scheduled for Friday, July 9.
