EAGLE PASS, Texas — On Wednesday, a Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol helicopter scanned outbound trains as troopers assisted on the ground. A plume of dust created by the hovering aircraft evidenced the daily check for migrants leaving the city. The border security task, once exclusively performed by federal authorities, has become routine for state troopers under Operation Lone Star.

As the Border Patrol is relegated to the enormous task of providing humanitarian care for thousands of migrant detainees in custody, their involvements in actual patrols are significantly reduced.

Along state highways, back roads, and the banks of the Rio Grande, state troopers and Texas Army National Guard personnel are sometimes the only law enforcement officers visible.

In March 2021, Governor Greg Abbott announced Operation Lone Star would commence in response to an increase in migrant crossings, human smuggling, and narcotics trafficking. The operation involves the deployment of more than 1,000 state police and National Guardsmen to the immediate border area.

The operation continues in full swing nearly six months later. Despite the increased presence of the troopers and guardsmen, lax federal immigration policies have caused the flow to continue almost unabated.

As of Tuesday, Operation Lone Star netted 64,900 migrant referrals to federal officials. More than 5,000 criminal arrests have been made and more than 8,000 pounds of cocaine and methamphetamine were seized. Illicit currency to the tune of $14.7 million was found in relation to the crimes committed along the border. The number of firearms seized stands at 1,500. There were roughly 700 vehicle pursuits involving human smugglers.

The flow of migrants across the border has kept the operation running and prompted Abbott to dedicate state prison beds to house migrants arrested for criminal trespass. In August, Abbott granted arrest authorities to the Texas Army National Guard.

New Texas Law Eases Burden in Prosecuting Human Smugglers

A new Texas law makes it easier to prosecute human smugglers by removing the requirement to prove the intent to obtain a “pecuniary benefit.” The bill also makes it a 3rd Degree Felony to “assist, guide, or direct” migrants to enter or remain on agricultural land without the consent of the owner.

Senate Bill 576 eases the burden on Texas prosecutors to put human smugglers in prison by removing the state’s burden of proving the “intent to obtain a pecuniary benefit” from the elements of the crime, according to the bill authored by State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa (D-McAllen), and signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott (R). The new law went into effect on September 1.

Previously, prosecutors had to prove the smuggler received or intended to receive some financial gain. The pecuniary clause can now be utilized by prosecutors to enhance the charge to a 2nd Degree Felony, the bill states. Carrying a firearm while smuggling migrants will now also increase the penalty level.

The new law also makes it a 3rd degree felony if the smuggler “assists, guides, or directs two or more individuals to enter or remain on agricultural land without the effective consent of the owner.” Human smugglers frequently move migrants through farms and ranches in South Texas in an effort to avoid apprehension or circumvent Border Patrol checkpoints.

The bill comes as Texas battles the massive surge of illegal border crossings following the inauguration of President Joe Biden in January. Many Democrat elected officials along the Rio Grande have spoken out against the president’s policies that led to more than 1 million migrants being apprehended between February and August.

Suzanne West, a district attorney in Val Verde, Texas, told the Epoch Times the new law will make it easier to prosecute.

“We don’t have any way to track cases declined for particular issues, but there were a noticeable number,” West explained. “The changes … absolutely do make these cases easier to prosecute.”

Following the signing of the law in June, Senator Hinojosa said, “There is no doubt that we have a critical situation at the state’s southern border and I have heard firsthand the difficulties that human smuggling brings to local officials and landowners. SB 576 is designed to target human smugglers who are a threat to both smuggled individuals and people who live in the remote areas along the border.”

In July, Breitbart Texas reported on the frustration of Texas farmers and ranchers who must deal with the damage caused by human smugglers crashing through fences and destroying property.

Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening explained how different the current border crisis is compared to previous spikes in border crossings.

“The brashness and expectations of the people is different than years ago,” the Farm Bureau president concluded. “We often hear about the unaccompanied minors and family units that actually give themselves up to authorities, but there are also groups of young male adults moving through carrying backpacks and accompanied by a coyote with an automatic weapon. Do we really think these folks are looking for asylum or work?”

Human Smuggler Wrecks Innocent Motorist in Texas Border Town

EAGLE PASS, Texas — On Monday evening, a vehicle suspected of transporting migrants fled a Border Patrol checkpoint near Carrizo Springs. Multiple law enforcement agencies pursued. After a 20-mile chase, the smuggler crashed into an innocent motorist.

The pursuit began when the smuggler realized he was headed right into an established Border Patrol highway checkpoint on US 277 near Carrizo Springs. Hoping to avoid arrest, the driver fled the area, traveling back to the border. Agents notified Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol.

The high-speed vehicle pursuit reached speeds of more than 80 miles per hour. Upon entering Eagle Pass, the smuggler struck an uninvolved motorist and child passenger. Both occupants sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital.

The smuggler was apprehended by DPS after a brief foot chase and was also taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment of minor injuries. Four migrants were arrested at the scene and turned over to Border Patrol. One migrant managed to escape in the aftermath.

The driver of the vehicle is being held by DPS and faces multiple criminal charges including Smuggling of Persons and Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Human smugglers are increasingly fleeing authorities in Texas and elsewhere. The actions taken to avoid prosecution have resulted in serious accidents–some miles away from the border.

In August, one accident involving human smuggling left 10 migrants dead and more than 20 seriously injured after a van rolled over on a Texas highway.

AFL-CIO President: Flooding U.S. Labor Market via Amnesty ‘Would Benefit’ Working Class Americans

AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler says the United States must give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, claiming such a policy “would benefit” working class Americans across the nation.

During an event at the White House on Wednesday, Shuler and President Joe Biden touted House and Senate Democrats’ plan to slip amnesty for illegal aliens into a $3.5 trillion so-called infrastructure package.

Shuler said:

Every working person in every state would benefit in some way, child care tax credits, the first ever federal paid family and medical leave benefit, a long overdue path to citizenship, infrastructure investments, apprenticeship programs, American made industries, American supply chains made with good union jobs. That is the Biden-Harris vision for America’s future. [Emphasis added].

In August, Senate Democrats unveiled a budget resolution framework which includes spending about $107 million in taxpayer money to flood the U.S. labor market with millions of newly legalized illegal aliens.

The language of the framework is vague, asking the Judiciary Committee members to give “lawful permanent status for qualified immigrants.” Those who would qualify for such an amnesty remain unclear.

With Shuler’s endorsement of the amnesty, the AFL-CIO — meant to represent the interests of union workers — joins the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Business Roundtable, Koch brothers network, tech corporations, and former President George W. Bush, among others, in lobbying for the legalization of millions of illegal aliens to compete against America’s working and middle class for U.S. jobs.

A flooded labor market from mass legal and illegal immigration to the U.S. has had a devastating impact on the nation’s working and middle class while redistributing wealth to the highest earners. In creating an economy that tilts in favor of employers, the economic model helped keep wages stagnant for decades.

Between 1979 to 2013, wage growth for the bottom 90 percent of Americans grew just 15 percent. Meanwhile, wage growth for the top one percent of Americans was nearly 140 percent higher.

Researchers have found that a flooded labor market can easily diminish job opportunities and wages for Americans.

One particular study by the Center for Immigration Studies’ Steven Camarota revealed that for every one percent increase in the immigrant portion of an American workers’ occupation, their weekly wages are cut by perhaps 0.5 percent. This means the average native-born American worker today has his weekly wages reduced by potentially 8.75 percent as more than 17 percent of the workforce is foreign-born.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has repeatedly found that amnesty for illegal aliens would be a net fiscal drain for American taxpayers while driving down U.S. wages.
