Shocking moment Florida deputy gets shot and beaten with butt of AR-15-style rifle by passenger who burst out of car during traffic stop before cop's partner saves his life by killing career criminal in shootout
Dashcam footage shows the moment deputies Brian Potters (top left) and Tyler Thoman (top right) were ambushed by a gunman, prompting a shootout leaving suspect Paris Wilder (bottom right), 38, dead and Potters severely injured. The officers pulled over a car on West New Haven Avenue in Melbourne, Florida, in a routine traffic stop off of I-95 on Monday, August 30. When Potters asked a passenger to exit the car, Wilder jumped out 'with a small stock AR-15-styled rifle' and started shooting. He then used the butt of the gun to beat Potters, prompting Thoman to use fatal force to 'eliminate the threat'. Wilder was a career criminal with 40 previous arrests and the Sheriff's Office said he was out on bond avoiding another arrest when the shooting took place. The investigation is ongoing and both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is customary in all deputy-involved shootings.
