Schumer Avoids I-Word (Inflation): 'We're Going to Focus Like a Laser on Reducing Costs'
(CNSNews.com) - On the same day President Biden warned Americans that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could raise American energy prices, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that Democrats are now turning their focus to inflation -- but he never used that word.
Instead, Schumer talked about "costs," as in "lowering costs for working families."
"Whether it's childcare or prescription drugs or semiconductor chips or filling up the gas pump, what's on the dining table, cost of food, we're coming up with solutions to address these issues," Schumer said at a Democrat news conference:
So, we are focused on getting costs down, and you're going to see a lot of activity in March...from us on that issue.
Now, let's not forget we're a very strong economy. In President Biden's first year, the economy added 6.6 million new jobs, the most ever, ever in a president's first year, but we're not stopping there.
Now that wages are going up, we want to make sure costs go down so the average person has more money in her or his pocket. And that's what our whole lunch was about, or most of our lunch was about today. Various members came up with different ideas, and we're going to focus and we're going to come up with caucus agreement on those ideas.
Not everyone will agree with each idea, but there'll be large buy-in and you'll hear a lot about this from us as we move on.
Schumer specifically mentioned "the competition bill to relieve U.S. supply chains"; a bill to "lower the cost of prescription drugs"; and "antitrust bills to increase competition."
"And on any of these cost saving bills, we'll welcome Republicans joining us. If we can get 60 votes on a bunch of them, that's fine. But when we can't, we're still going to move forward," Schumer said.
"So as I said, some will be partisan, some will be bipartisan, but we have solutions and we're going to focus like a laser on reducing costs. The new proposals and new ideas keep coming. And we're going to propose legislation and we're going to move forward, and we're going to go back to our states and start talking about these things."
In the Q&A part of the news conference, Schumer prioritized questions about "costs": "We're going to take questions first on the subject of cutting costs, so don't ask if it's not cutting costs," Schumer said.
Of the four senators who spoke at the news conference -- Schumer, Dick Durbin, Patty Murray and Debbie Stabenow -- only two used the word "inflation."
Sen. Durbin (Ill.) mentioned inflation" twice: "The goal is clear," he said. "We want to help these families make ends meet but we don't want to make inflation worse. We've got to come up with a plan that addresses that.
"Each family has a different challenge, but we know that inflation is a challenge to all of us that we can deal with. And there are several elements that we think are going to help this economy improve."
Sen. Stabenow (Mich.) used the word "inflation" once, while criticizing Republicans: "But rather than joining us to tackle high costs and inflation, Republicans are busy standing up for big corporations that are price gouging Americans while making...record profits. We are laser focused on lowering American's costs..."
Republicans blame Democrat spending
Senate Republicans, at their Tuesday news conference, said Democrats have stoked inflation with their multi-trillion-dollar spending bills and their apparently deliberate efforts to raise energy prices.
"They want to raise traditional energy prices so high that people have to look for alternatives. And they've certainly managed to do that," Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said.
Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) criticized the Biden administration for reversing U.S. energy independence.
Sen. Barrasso: 'Out of Touch' Joe Biden 'Is the President of High Prices'
(CNSNews.com) - "Joe Biden is the president of high prices," Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) told a news conference on Tuesday.
"Inflation will be a defining failure of this president's administration to the point that, in just one year as president, Joe Biden has driven inflation to a 40-year high. And at the same time, he's driven his own approval ratings down to a low of only 40 percent of Americans."
Barrasso noted that Americans are seeing higher prices at the grocery store and at the gas pump, and while wages may be going up, "prices are going up much faster, so people can't keep up."
"And who's getting hurt?" Barrasso asked:
Well, it's working families trying to get by. The average family in the United States has to spend $275 more dollars each and every month now just to stay even from where they were a year ago compared to what it would have cost last year. So people are going to have to change -- and are changing -- the way they drive, the way they shop, the way they live.
People are having to tap into savings if they have savings. Inflation is crushing people's dreams. Energy prices are much higher to heat your home this year. Who's affected by that? Well, it's people trying to get by. It's people living on a fixed income, people struggling, young couples, all of it.
Barrasso noted that the Democrats' solution is "more government borrowing, more government spending that's going to make inflation worse."
He didn't hold back on his criticism: "When people look at this president, they see somebody who is out of touch and in way over his head. And unfortunately, the American people are paying for this President's incompetence."
Sen. Roy Blunt (Mo.), speaking at the same news conference, said the Biden administration wants higher energy prices: "They want to raise traditional energy prices so high that people have to look for alternatives. And they've certainly managed to do that."
Sen. Joni Ernst (Iowa) criticized the Biden administration for making Americans "increasingly dependent" on Russia and Iran (OPEC) for oil.
So the United States has increased its imports from Russia to 202,000 barrels a day from Russia. That's the highest it has been in 11 years.
And again, we are one of the largest producers of energy right here in the United States. So why on earth are we ratcheting down on our energy independence and becoming increasingly reliant upon an autocratic thug, Vladimir Putin...
...So let's ramp up our own energy production here in the United States. Let's uncouple from Vladimir Putin. Let's become an exporter of American energy once again. It's really important.
Price of Unleaded Gas Up 40.8% Under Biden; Used Cars Up 40.5%; Beef Up 16.0%
(CNSNews.com) - Between January 2021 and January 2022--President Joe Biden’s first year in office--the price of unleaded gasoline increased 40.8 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
During that same one-year period, the price of used cars and trucks increased by 40.5 percent.
The price beef and veal products increased 16.0 percent, according to BLS. That included a 13.0 percent increase in the price of uncooked ground beef; a 17.1 percent increase in the price of uncooked beef steaks; and a 19.2 percent increase in the price of uncooked beef roasts.
The price of pork increased 14.1 percent.
The price of chicken increased 10.3 percent.
A majority of Americans say the economy is the top issue in determining how they will vote in the midterm elections, a Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey released this week found.
The survey asked respondents to identify which issues are “most likely to determine” how they will vote in the November 8, 2022, midterm elections, allowing them to choose up to three.
A majority, 57 percent, selected the economy, identifying it as the top issue that will determine how they vote later this year. Just over one-third, 34 percent, said “healthcare,” and 33 percent said the Chinese coronavirus pandemic:
The economy is the most-selected option for both 2020 Joe Biden (56%) and Donald Trump (64%) voters. Other important election issues for Biden voters include healthcare (43%) and the pandemic (42%), while Trump voters are more likely to select immigration (37%) and Government spending (29%).
The poll was taken February 6, 2022, among 1,500 eligible voters.
The survey coincides with America experiencing the worst inflation in 40 years, as consumer prices jump 7.5 percent higher and consumer sentiment drops to a 10-year low.
As Breitbart News detailed:
Food prices rose seven percent compared with a year ago, data from the Department of Labor showed on Thursday. Grocery store prices were up by even more, 7.4 percent. The Consumer Price Index rose by 7.5 percent.
Inflation is now not only running high but it has broadened to an economy-wide phenomenon. Home furniture prices are up 9.3 percent compared with last January and rose 1.6 percent last month. Prices for the category of “living room, kitchen, and dining room” furniture are up an eye-popping 19.9 percent compared with a year ago. They rose 2.2 percent compared with December.
Importantly, these prices are seasonally adjusted so they cannot be explained by typical the end of holiday shopping season sales.
Late last week, President Biden said he was “proud” of the January jobs report despite the fact that just one percent of Americans view the economy as excellent.
