(CNSNews.com) - President Joe Biden issued a proclamation on Wednesday that declared this Thursday the “National Day of Prayer.”

In issuing his proclamation, Biden noted that the U.S. Constitution protects freedom of speech and the free exercise of religion.

“Prayer is a sacred right protected by free speech and religious liberty enshrined in our Constitution, and it continues to lift our spirits as we navigate the challenges of our time,” said Biden.

Biden also noted that we are now confronting what he called “some of the greatest challenges humanity has ever faced.” He included among these “saving our planet from the existential threat of climate change” and “living up to our Nation’s promise of liberty, justice and equality for all.”

“I call upon the citizens of our Nation to give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I invite all people of faith to join me in asking for God’s continued guidance, mercy, and protection,” Biden proclaimed.

Biden Justifies Abortion by Invoking Rights of ‘a Child of God,’ Then Declares National Day of Prayer

(CNSNews.com) - President Joe Biden on Wednesday morning explained his position in favor of legalized abortion by recalling that he had once told Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork that he possessed the rights he had because he is a “child of God.”

Later that same day, Biden issued a statement declaring Thursday the National Day of Prayer.”

After giving remarks on the economy in the Roosevelt Room of the White House shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Biden answered questions from reporters.

One reporter asked him about the leaked draft Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 opinion that declared abortion a right.  

“What’s the next step on abortion once this case gets settled?” the reporter asked.

“When this hit, as I was getting on the plane to go down to Alabama, this is about a lot more than abortion.  I hadn’t read the whole opinion at that time,” said Biden. 

“But this reminds me of the debate with Robert Bork. Bork believed the only reason you had any inherent rights was because the government gave them to you. If you go back and look at the opening comments from the Bork-Biden—when I was questioning him as chairman--I said, ‘I believe I have the rights that I have not because the government gave them to me, which you believe, but because I’m just a child of God; I exist,’” said Biden.

Biden then went on to invoke the “right to privacy”—under which the Supreme Court in Roe vs. Wade claimed a right to abortion.

“What are the next things that are going to be attacked?” Biden said at the end of his response to this question. “Because this MAGA crowd is really the most extreme political organization that’s existed in American history—in recent American history.

Later on Wednesday, President Biden issued “A Proclamation on National Day of Prayer, 2022.”

President Joe Biden delivered a sharp political speech from the White House on Wednesday warning of the “extreme” agenda from “MAGA” Republicans.

“This MAGA crowd is really the most extreme political organization that has existed in American history,” Biden said, referring to the Make America Great Again movement sparked by former President Donald Trump.

The president then clarified that he meant the most extreme political group in “recent” American history.

Biden repeatedly mispronounced “MAGA” as “mega” but corrected himself.

“The mega Republicans, the MAGA Republicans, excuse me, I don’t want to mispronounce it, the MAGA Republicans,” he said.

Biden answered a question from reporters about the possibility of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

“This is about a lot more than abortion,” he said.

The president warned that Republicans might pass a law preventing “LGTBQ children” from attending public school with other children.

“Let me tell you about this ultra-MAGA agenda, it’s extreme,” Biden said.

He also suggested that the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade could mean that government could regulate couples from using birth control.

Biden spoke about Republicans during a speech in the White House trumpeting his attempt to reduce the deficit, despite spending more than $3 trillion in his first year as president.

The president repeatedly referred to former President Donald Trump without using his name, choosing instead to focus on “MAGA Republicans.”

US Federal Reserve raises rates, outlines class war policy against workers

The US Federal Reserve announced Wednesday it was raising the benchmark short-term interest rate by half a percentage point, the largest rate hike since 2000. Fed Chief Jerome Powell said the US central bank expected to carry out 0.5 percent rate hikes at each of its next two meetings and further increases afterwards to slow the economy without driving it into recession. The aim of these measures, he said, was to bring inflation, now at a four-decade high of 8.5 percent, back towards the Fed’s target of 2 percent a year.

At a press conference following a meeting of the central bank’s policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee, Powell began his remarks by feigning concern for the devastating impact of surging fuel, food and other costs on workers and their families. “Inflation is much too high,” he said. “We understand the hardship that it is causing, and we are working expeditiously to bring it back down. We have the tools we need and the resolve it will take to restore price stability on behalf of American families and businesses.”

The rate hike, however, will only increase hardship for working class families. In the first instance, it will raise the cost of mortgages, credit cards, student loans, car payments and other forms of consumer debt.

The average American household is already burdened with $155,000 in debt. With everything going up except workers’ real wages, families are increasingly using credit cards to pay for groceries and other necessities. In the fourth quarter of 2021, credit card debt rose $52 billion, the largest quarterly increase on record. After the Fed's quarter-point increase in March, interest rates increased across 75 percent of the 200 credit cards LendingTree credit expert Matt Schulz monitors every month, he told CBS News.

The interest on a 30-year fixed-rate home mortgage rose to 5.41 percent after the Fed’s move and is up almost two points since last year. Home buyers are already spending more than $5,000 a year more for an average home in the US, which costs $392,000. This will only increase as the Fed continues to hike rates.

Powell brushed aside the impact of rate hikes on workers’ debt payments, saying the increases might cause “some pain” and lead “consumers to spend a little less.” This was all necessary, however, to “restore price stability.”

In his further remarks, the Fed chief made clear what he and the American ruling class really mean by “fighting inflation.” Powell cited “tight labor markets” and “labor shortages,” which had led to “wages rising at the fastest pace in years.”

There was a nearly two-to-one ratio of job openings to unemployed workers, forcing employers to pay more to attract workers, Powell complained. “This was a good time to be a worker,” he said, adding bitterly that workers “could change jobs or look to get a raise at the current job.”

Central bankers, Powell asserted, “love wages to go up, but at a sustainable level.” The current pace, however, “was not consistent with 2 percent inflation.”

Powell said the Fed’s aim was to return to the “long period of expansion” and low inflation rates that characterized the US economy before the pandemic. But this nirvana for the American ruling class coincided with a four-decade decline in the real wages of workers.

What are the “unsustainable” wage hikes of the past year that Powell finds so disturbing? Wages and salaries for civilian workers increased by only 4.7 percent during the 12-month period ending in March 2022, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. For private-sector workers, wages and salaries were up 5.0 percent over the same 12-month period.

But in real terms (adjusted for inflation), wages of private industry workers declined 3.3 percent from March 2021 to March 2022.

Significantly, non-union workers got larger pay increases than unionized workers. Non-union workers saw increases of 5.1 percent between March 2021 and March 2022, up from 3.0 percent the year before. Unionized workers saw only a 3.7 percent increase, up from 3.1 percent the year before. This was the direct result of the four-year, five-year and six-year contracts signed by the United Auto Workers, the United Steelworkers and other unions at Volvo Trucks, Deere, Dana, Kellogg’s and in the oil industry, which provide annual wage increases of 3 percent or less.

At the same time, corporate profits are at the highest levels since the 1950s. This week, the oil industry announced massive first-quarter profits, including Chevron ($6.3 billion), ExxonMobil ($5.5 billion) and Marathon ($1.3 billion), and the extension of multi-billion-dollar stock buyback programs to boost the fortunes of their investors.

A recent report by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) noted that price-gouging markups by corporate America, along with the supply chain crisis, had contributed far more to inflation than minuscule wage increases.

The EPI wrote: “Since the trough of the COVID-19 recession in the second quarter of 2020, overall prices in the NFC [non-financial corporate] sector have risen at an annualized rate of 6.1%—a pronounced acceleration over the 1.8% price growth that characterized the pre-pandemic business cycle of 2007–2019. Strikingly, over half of this increase (53.9%) can be attributed to fatter profit margins, with labor costs contributing less than 8% of this increase.”

An even greater factor has been the massive inflation of financial assets, fueled by the policy of “quantitative easing.” Ever since the 2008 crash, the Fed has poured trillions of dollars of virtually free money into the financial markets and bought up the bad debts of the banks and corporations, fueling a massive and unsustainable financial bubble. The 2020 Wall Street bailout led to a 70 percent rise in the personal fortunes of Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and the rest of America’s billionaires.

The New York Stock Exchange celebrated the Fed’s rate hike and Powell’s assurances that it was not considering more substantial 0.75 percent increases over the next few months. The Dow closed with a nearly 3 percent gain for the day.

Wall Street got and applauded Powell’s central message. The Fed was prepared to risk a full-scale recession to fight the danger of further “wage inflation” and a “wage-price spiral.” The Fed “would not hesitate” to move from “neutral” to “restrictive” interest rates to restore “labor market balance,” the Fed chief insisted.

This is the language of class war. The ruling class fears that the growing movement of the working class for substantial wage increases threatens to end its “magic recipe” of stagnant wages and relentless cuts to social spending, which has enriched America’s financial and corporate oligarchy as never before.

The ruling elite is preparing to use mass unemployment as a hammer to beat back workers’ wage demands.

This savage policy is supported by the Biden administration, both capitalist parties and the corporate media. On April 29, the New York Times editorial board published a statement (“The Courage Required to Fight Inflation”) which recalled in horror, “In the 1970s, workers successfully demanded wage increases to compensate for expected increases in prices.”

The Times noted favorably that Powell “has often expressed admiration for the resolve exhibited by one of his predecessors, Paul Volcker, who was willing to crash the economy in the early 1980s to drive down inflation.”

The former Chase Manhattan Bank executive was appointed by Democratic President Jimmy Carter as Fed chairman in 1979, after a decade of rising working class militancy that culminated in the 111-day nationwide strike by coal miners in 1977–78 and their defiance of Carter’s Taft-Hartley back-to-work order.

Declaring that the “standard of living of the average worker has to decline,” Volcker raised interest rates to a record 20 percent and precipitated the worst recession up to then since the Great Depression. Between 1978 and 1982, over 6.8 million jobs were wiped out through plant closures and mass layoffs. Volcker remained Fed chairman under Ronald Reagan and would later hail the Republican president’s mass firing of 13,000 striking air traffic controllers as “the most important single action of the administration in helping the anti-inflation fight.”

Asked Wednesday by a Bloomberg reporter about his admiration for Volcker, Powell said, “He had the courage to do what he thought was the right thing.”

Social anger over surging prices and unbearable workloads has already produced a rising tide of working class resistance in recent weeks, with strikes by Chevron oil workers, Stanford University nurses, Oakland teachers, CNH manufacturing workers in Wisconsin and Iowa and other labor actions. The class war policy of the Federal Reserve and the demands of the Biden administration for endless sacrifice to pay for its reckless military confrontation with Russia are setting the stage for an explosive escalation of class conflict in the US, as workers join their counterparts around the world in the fight against social inequality, capitalist exploitation and war.

CNN Poll: Only 2% of Americans Believe Biden’s Economy Is ‘Very Good’

Only two percent of Americans believe President Joe Biden’s economy is “very good,” a CNN poll released Wednesday revealed.

By contrast, a total of 77 percent believe Biden’s economy is poor, the highest mark in a decade. Forty-seven percent say the economy remains “somewhat” poor, while another 30 percent said it was “very poor.”

The poll also revealed the economy is the number one issue for Americans by 36 points (50 percent). Subsequent issues followed: Ukrainian war (14 percent), immigration (10 percent), global warming (nine percent), racial unrest (five percent), coronavirus (five percent), and education (four percent).

The amount of people who praised Biden’s economy as “very good” is at an all-time low for the president. In August, the number of respondents who said Biden’s economy was “very good” was three percent, dropping one percentage point in May. The two percent mark in May is the lowest mark since Barack Obama’s 2014 economy.

Biden’s rating on the economy, the most important issue, seems to impact how Americans view the nation. Only two percent say the nation is doing “very well.” In contrast, 20 percent said the nation is doing “very badly,” an 18-point difference.

During Biden’s presidency, only five percent of respondents have marked Biden’s America as doing “very well.” Biden’s mark is well below Donald Trump’s. Before the coronavirus, 21 percent of Americans said the nation was doing “very well,” up from five percent in Obama’s last month as president.

Not many trust Biden’s economic agenda of spending vast amounts of money is helping the economy. Seventy-three percent say Biden is doing too little to address the current economic conditions. Less than a quarter of respondents said Biden was doing just the “right amount.”

In 2021, Biden passed the costly $1 trillion infrastructure package and $1.9 trillion coronavirus package, which some economists say fueled inflation. Economists have predicted a 50/50 chance of a recession in the coming months and into 2023.

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday announced it was raising interest rates a half a percentage point to fight inflation. The fed has not raised interest rates to such a degree in more than two decades.

Labor Costs Jumps 11.6 % As Productivity Falls 7.5%, Biggest Decline Since 1947

Worker productivity fell 7.5 percent in the first three months of the year, the sharpest decline since 1947, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday.

Economists had expected this measure of nonfarm productivity to fall a milder 2.5 percent after a 6.3 percent rise in the fourth quarter of 2021. Nonfarm productivity is measured by comparing the total number of hours worked to the economy’s total output.

Unit labor costs, a measure of what businesses pay to produce a unit of output, jumped 11.6 percent. Over the last four quarters, unit labor costs are up 7.2 percent. That’s the largest year-over-year gain since 1982.

This barometer was also worse than expected. Economists had forecast a 6.8 percent rise in unit labor costs. The higher than expected figure shows that inflation was even stronger than thought as the year took off.

The economy contracted 1.4 percent in the first quarter even as businesses went on a hiring spree. Unemployment dropped to 3.6 percent in the quarter and job openings rose to a record high 11.5 percent.

(CNSNews.com) - The federal debt has increased by $2,650,725,664,597.74 since President Joe Biden was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2021, according to the official numbers published by the U.S. Treasury.

At the close of business on Biden’s Inaugural Day, the federal debt stood at $27,751,896,236,414.77, according to the Treasury. At the close of business on Monday, the most recent day for which the numbers are available, the debt was $30,402,621,901,012.51.

The increase from the $27,751,896,236,414.77 debt on Biden’s Inaugural day to the $30,402,621,901,012.51 on Monday equals $2,650,725,664,597.74.

So far, the Treasury has published the tax, spending and deficit numbers for each of the first fourteen full months of Biden’s presidency (February 2021 through March 2022). In 13 of those 14 months, according to the latest Monthly Treasury Statement, federal spending has exceeded federal revenues and the federal government has run a deficit.

Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Ohio J.D. Vance slammed his Democrat competitor Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) for stating that women should be able to abort their unborn children at any point in pregnancy.

“Here’s Kamala Harris stooge Tim Ryan defending abortion through 40 weeks. This is a barbaric position anywhere in the world (even European nations typically don’t allow abortion after 12 weeks). But it’s an especially radical position in Ohio,” Vance tweeted in response to a clip of Tim Ryan talking to Fox New’s Special Report host Bret Baier on Wednesday.

The segment was about the influence the leak of the Supreme Court’s potential decision to overrule Roe v. Wade could have on midterm elections. On Monday night, Politico released a draft opinion, seemingly written by Justice Samuel Alito, which would overturn the Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision declaring abortion to be protected by the U.S. Constitution. 

Ever since the leak, radical left Democrats have pushed to end the filibuster, pack the Supreme Court, and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation which would enshrine abortion on demand and up-to-birth in federal law as well as void all state laws aimed at protecting the lives of the unborn. In the interview, Baier asked Ryan, “As senator, would you have any limits on abortion?”

“Look, you gotta leave it up to the woman, because you and I sitting here are a bunch of — well you and I sitting here can’t account for all of the different scenarios that a woman dealing with the complexities of a pregnancy are going through. How can I figure that out?” Ryan replied. 

In the same interview, Ryan called Roe v. Wade “an issue of freedom,” and warned that if the Supreme Court does end up overruling Roe, states like Ohio will roll out “extreme” laws. 

“If we move away from that, you’re going to get states like Ohio that have some of the most extreme laws in the whole country, where if you’re a young girl and you’ve been raped or there’s been incest…the state, the government is going to force you to bring that baby to term, and I just don’t think that’s a fundamental value,” he said.

(CNS News) -- After a Catholic deacon in Texas tweeted a post stating that "Joe Biden is a heretic" and an "apostate," the Catholic bishop of Tyler, Texas, Joseph Strickland,  retweeted the item and entitled it "Time for truth..."

Although Presiden Biden is a Catholic, he supports abortion and Roe v. Wade, as well as "gay marriage" and other practices that violate the teaching of the Catholic Church. By supporting those things and speaking in their defense, Biden is, in the objective order, backing heresy and causing scandal. An apostate is someone who has essentially abandoned their faith.

In a May 4 tweet, Deacon Keith Fournier wrote, "Let's be completely honest. Joe Biden is a heretic. An apostate. Any Bishop who doesn't acknowledge that, call him to repentance, to the Sacrament of Confession, and INSIST he correct his error as a professing public Catholic is wrong. Sorry, this is a time for TRUTH."

Bishop Strickland retweeted that post and wrote, "Time for truth..."

Bishop Strickland has criticized President Biden's support for abortion in the past. In another May 4 tweet linked to an article about Biden's defense of abortion, Bishop Strickland wrote, "Mr President you are wrong, completely wrong, and as you continue to push this agenda you push the division in this nation to the breaking point. I pray that your hardened heart will open to the sanctity of life for the unborn child & for the mother."

In reference to a leaked copy of an opinion by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito that calls for overturning Roe v. Wade, President Biden said on Tuesday, "I believe that a woman’s right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for almost fifty years, and basic fairness and the stability of our law demand that it not be overturned."

During the 2020 presidential race, Biden's campaign plan stated, "As president, Biden will work to codify Roe v. Wade, and his Justice Department will do everything in its power to stop the rash of state laws that so blatantly violate the constitutional right to an abortion, such as so-called TRAP laws, parental notification requirements, mandatory waiting periods, and ultrasound requirements."

President Joe Biden further reacted to a leaked draft opinion from the Supreme Court on Tuesday, criticizing the “radical” argument against a constitutional right to abortion.

“The idea that we’re gonna make a judgment that is going to say that no one can make the judgment to choose to abort a child based on a decision by the Supreme Court I think goes way overboard,” Biden said.

The president spoke to reporters about the draft opinion as he left Washington, DC, for a trip to Alabama to visit a Lockheed Martin manufacturing facility.

During his remarks, Biden falsely claimed that all mainstream religions believe the beginning of human life is open to interpretation.

“Look, think what Roe says. Roe says what all basic mainstream religions have historically concluded — that the right — that the existence of a human life and being is a question. Is it at the moment of conception? Is it six months? Is it six weeks?”

The president failed to mention that the Catholic Church, of which he claims to be a member, teaches that life begins at the moment of conception.

Biden commented on the issue of abortion after a draft opinion from Justice Samuel Alito to overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked to the media.

He appeared deeply concerned by the leaked opinion, arguing the Supreme Court was threatening to make a “radical decision” if they did choose to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“If this decision holds, it’s really quite a radical decision… it basically says all the decisions related to your private life — who you marry, whether or not you decide to conceive a child or not… what does this do?” he asked.

He also warned that the constitutional right to gay marriage would be endangered as well as other Supreme Court cases involving the right to privacy.

“It’s a fundamental shift in American jurisprudence,” he said.

Biden said he supported a congressional effort to codify Roe v. Wade into law but declined to say whether or not he supported breaking the Senate filibuster rules to ensure its passage.

“I’m not prepared to make those decisions now,” he said.

“‘I believe I have the rights that I have not because the government gave them to me, which you believe, but because I’m just a child of God,’” Biden recalled telling Bork during those hearings.

Biden then seemed to suggest that the “right to privacy,” under which the Supreme Court placed an alleged “right” to abortion, was one of the rights that comes from God.

“So, the idea that somehow there is an inherent right—that there is no right of privacy, that there is no right—and remember the debate we—You don’t remember, but we had a debate about Griswold vs. Connecticut,” said Biden. “There’d been a law saying a married couple could not purchase birth control in the privacy of their own bedroom and use it. Well, that got struck down. Griswold was thought to be a bad decision by Bork and, my guess is, the guys on the Supreme Court now.” 

“What happens if you have a state change the law saying that children who are LGBTQ can’t be in classrooms with other children?” Biden went on to say.  “Is that—Is that legit under the way the decision is written?

DOJ Releases MS-13 Report

74 percent of gang defendants charged were unlawfully present in the United States

On Wednesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) released "Full-Scale Response: A Report on the Department of Justice's Efforts to Combat MS-13 from 2016-2020". It is well worth the read, detailing the department's efforts to eradicate Mara Salvatrucha-13 (MS-13), which was designated as a significant transnational criminal organization (TCO) during the Obama administration in 2012, worldwide. The most interesting — but not shocking — takeaway is that some 74 percent of the MS-13 defendants prosecuted by DOJ during the past four years are in the United States illegally.

MS-13 is not a new topic on these pages, but it is, oddly enough, one that does not draw much attention — even in communities in which the organization operates. For example, on September 4, I wrote "Five MS-13 'Affiliates' Held in Rural Baltimore County Killing of 16-Year-Old Girl". The victim, Gabriela Alejandra Gonzalez Ardon, was slaughtered in the woods beside a walking trail near an upscale Maryland neighborhood.

Harris’s most important contribution to the Supreme Court debate thus far has been her controversial attempt to smear Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing in 2018.

She insinuated that Kavanaugh was linked to Russian collusion — a claim so absurd that she was mocked by both of the major newspapers in her home state, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times. Harris also drew criticism for a deceptively-edited video in which she falsely suggested Kavanaugh opposed birth control.

Harris is no friend of religious liberty. There is something fitting in the selection of Harris to co-lead the Democrats’ ticket.
