Cory Booker Pleads for Leniency in Sentencing of Theranos Fraudster Holmes
Democratic senator says Elizabeth Holmes has 'sincere desire to help others'
Sen. Cory Booker (D., N.J.) last week requested that a federal judge give Theranos fraudster Elizabeth Holmes a "fair and just sentence."
Holmes, who was convicted in January on four counts of defrauding investors and faces up to 20 years in prison, "has within her a sincere desire to help others" by fighting world hunger and climate change, Booker wrote in a letter to Judge Edward Davila. "I knew Ms. Holmes for about six years before charges were brought."
Davila is expected to issue a sentence Friday for Holmes, who was found guilty of lying to investors about her company’s blood testing machines, which she falsely claimed could run multiple tests on a single drop of blood. Theranos was once valued at $9 billion.
Booker's letter comes as critics compare Democratic megadonor Sam Bankman-Fried's crypto company FTX, which is under federal investigation for defrauding investors of billions of dollars, to Holmes's failed company.
Theranos made Holmes a favorite among Democrats and the Obama administration, which named her a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship. Then-vice president Joe Biden toured her Newark, Calif., facilities in 2015, praising the company for its "confidence."
"Talk about being inspired," Biden said at the event. "This is inspiration. It is amazing to me, Elizabeth, what you've been able to do."
Former president Bill Clinton hosted Holmes at the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual meeting in 2015. The discussion revolved around bringing "equality" into health care.

Merrick Garland Names Special Counsel on Trump; Still No Special Counsel on Hunter Biden
Attorney General Merrick Garland reportedly plans to name a special counsel to investigate former President Donald Trump, though he has yet to name such counsel to investigate President Joe Biden or his son, Hunter.
Update: Garland named John L. Smith as special counsel Friday afternoon in a televised press statement. According to LinkedIn, Smith is the Deputy Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division at U.S. Department of Justice — one of the most highly politicized, left-wing departments within the agency.
Hunter Biden acknowledged in December 2020 that he had been under federal investigation for possible tax violations. Since then, the investigation reportedly broadened to include more of his global business dealings.
However, Attorney General Garland has declined to appoint a special counsel, despite criticism from legal scholars who say that greater political independence is needed in an inquiry involving the president’s family.

The special counsel will assess whether criminal charges are merited in connection with the handling of classified documents at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and oversee key aspects of the sprawling Justice Department investigation into efforts by Mr. Trump and his allies to overturn his 2020 election loss, according to a senior Justice Department official.
A formal announcement, which is expected by Friday afternoon, would come three days after Mr. Trump announced another bid for the presidency and would mark the naming of the third independent prosecutor in five years to examine issues involving Mr. Trump.
Earlier this week, the Washington Post reported — nearly a week after the midterm election — that the Mar-a-Lago documents were of a personal interest and there was no indication that the former president intended to sell any national secrets. The story has largely been ignored.
Garland had promised at his confirmation hearing in 2021 to keep politics out of the Department of Justice.

GOP Rep. Comer: ‘Joe Biden Was Actively Involved in Hunter’s Shady Business Dealings’
During Thursday’s broadcast of FNC’s “Special Report,” Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, argued President Joe Biden was aware of his son Hunter Biden’s “shady” business dealings.
Comer told host Bret Baier it was possible that was guiding Biden administration policy.
“What we proved today was, first of all, Joe Biden lied to the American people when he said he had no knowledge of Hunter Biden’s shady business dealings,” he said. “OK, that is a complete lie. He also denied having any financial benefit from — from Hunter Biden. What we have proven today is not only did he know about Hunter’s shady business dealings with our adversaries in Ukraine, Russia and China, but he also was going to be an active part of that. We showed an e-mail that Hunter Biden sent to a property owner just outside of Washington, D.C. when they were nailing down office space. And he said, I need three extra keys, one for his Chinese partner, who is closely aligned with CCP, one for Jim Biden, and one for Joe Biden.”
“So, there are also e-mails that show that Hunter Biden was involved, that his dad was going to be a 10% equity stakeholder,” Comer continued. “We know the Gilliar comments and the Bobulinski comments that both have identified Joe Biden as being the big guy who’s going to get a 10% ownership stake. So, Joe Biden was actively involved in Hunter’s shady business dealings. And maybe that’s why we’re getting such bad policy. We learned today that one of their business propositions was to try to get China’s foot in the door on the American natural gas industry. I think the American people need to know that. And is that — has that compromised this administration?”
