Janet Protasiewicz under fire for light sentencing record ahead of Tuesday's election
A cold-blooded killer who burned his victims’ bodies. A felon accused of murdering the niece of a Milwaukee politician. A domestic abuser who gunned down his ex-wife.
These criminals had one thing in common—they were repeat offenders who preyed on their victims after receiving lenient sentences from liberal Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Janet Protasiewicz.
Protasiewicz’s conservative opponent, former justice Dan Kelly, has argued that her light sentencing record raises questions about her judgment. The high-stakes election, which will take place Tuesday, April 4, will determine the ideological breakdown of the swing state's top court and could have national implications for the 2024 presidential elections. Spending in the race has already exceeded $40 million, making it by far the most expensive state judicial election in U.S. history.
During Protasiewicz's time on the Milwaukee Circuit Court bench, she let off dozens of domestic abusers and child predators with little or no jail time, according to court records reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon—and many of them went on to commit new violent crimes.
Here are seven of the most disturbing cases:
1. Lazarick Spade
In December 2015, Spade escaped from a prison work-release program—where he was serving time for felony child abuse—and assaulted his estranged wife on a public sidewalk in Milwaukee. He pushed her to the ground and punched and kicked her, causing a fracture to her face.
Protasiewicz Sentence: Six months jail.
Aftermath: Shortly after he was released from prison, Spade ambushed his ex-wife outside her home in Milwaukee and shot her multiple times to "get even" with her for reporting the prior assault. She survived but lost a lung and suffered permanent injuries. The victim told the Free Beacon that the shooting likely wouldn’t have happened if Protasiewicz had given Spade a more serious sentence—and said she doesn't think Protasiewicz deserves to serve on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
2. Antwone Eichelberger
In March 2016, Eichelberger flew into a violent rage and strangled his girlfriend after accusing her of infidelity while he was in prison. The victim managed to flee and barricaded herself in her apartment by "wedg[ing] a chair in front of the door" to keep Eichelberger out, according to court records obtained by the Free Beacon.
Eichelberger broke into the home by smashing his fist through the glass door and "began punching [the victim] repeatedly." She was eventually able to escape by running barefoot "over the shattered glass, which caused the lacerations to her feet," and hid in a neighbor’s apartment until police came.
Protasiewicz Sentence: Probation.
Aftermath: Three years later, Eichelberger was charged with felony battery after punching his girlfriend repeatedly in the face, breaking her nose, according to court records.
3. Elijah Combs
In 2016, Combs strangled his girlfriend and punched her multiple times in the face, bloodying her nose and breaking her tooth, according to court records reported by Wisconsin Right Now. He also "kicked and stomped on" the victim "all over her body." Afterward, he ordered her to "clean up the blood that was splattered throughout the area" and wouldn’t let her leave the house "because her face was so messed up."
Protasiewicz Sentence: Six months in the House of Corrections.
Aftermath: Combs—who killed himself in late February after leading police on a car chase—is suspected of murdering his girlfriend Aliyah Perez, the 26-year-old niece of Milwaukee Alderman Jose Perez, in a shooting in February.
4. Matthew Neumann
In 2015, Neumann was arrested after brandishing a gun and threatening to shoot his wife, according to Fox News.
Protasiewicz Sentence: Probation.
Aftermath: Three years after he was sentenced, Neumann murdered two of his cleaning business employees after a night of drinking. He burned their bodies in a firepit on his property. Neumann’s daughter said she overheard her father say he killed one of the men over a pack of cigarettes, according to reports.
5. Kenneth Wright
In 2020, Kenneth Wright, 28, was arrested for sexual assault after impregnating a 15-year-old girl.
Sentence: Probation.
Aftermath: Less than a year after his sentence, Wright was charged with killing a teenage girl in a drunk driving accident.
6. Kenneth Blair
In 2018, Blair was charged with sexually assaulting 3 children aged 7, 8, and 11.
Sentence: Probation.
Aftermath: Three years later, Blair was charged with assaulting one of the same children, although the case was reportedly dismissed due to issues with the criminal complaint.
Sentence: Probation.
Aftermath: Bounds was arrested again last June for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The case is still open, according to records.
How Millions From George Soros Fueled Democrats’ Court Victory in Wisconsin
The left-wing billionaire George Soros and his network of activist groups spent millions of dollars to help Janet Protasiewicz win a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, a Washington Free Beacon analysis of campaign finance disclosure forms found.
The total amount of money stemming from groups bankrolled by the hedge-fund billionaire totals at least $2.8 million, accounting for a quarter of all outside spending for Protasiewicz in the most expensive state supreme court race in history. Soros also personally donated $1 million to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin on Feb. 22, which in turn flooded Protasiewicz’s campaign coffers with millions of dollars in the final weeks leading to the election.
Soros claims to have given away more than $12 billion dollars to various charities and political causes. Both Soros and activist groups he funds have spent more than $40 million in the last decade electing left-wing prosecutors around the country, which critics say is at least partially responsible for the nationwide crime spike.
Soros has remained laser-focused on reforming the nation’s legal system for years. His Open Society Foundation doubled its funding for Demand Justice, a left-wing activist group that seeks to remake the Supreme Court, to the tune of $4.5 million earlier this year. But Soros’s spending in Wisconsin signals that he seeks to remake state courts as well, in what appears to be his first major foray into a state supreme court race.
Sorors will likely see a solid return on his investment. Protasiewicz’s victory over conservative jurist Daniel Kelly gives liberals their first majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 15 years. The consequences of the election are expected to be transformational for the swing state, with the new court expected to rule on a number of hotly-contested issues including the legality of "right to work," abortion access, the state’s legislature map, and voter ID laws.
Many of the top-spending outside groups that supported Protasiewicz count Soros-funded non-profits as their top donors. The Better Wisconsin Together Political Action Fund, which spent $6.2 million on ads supporting the judge, received $1.6 million from the State Victory Action in the first three months of 2023. State Victory Action, in turn, received $1.6 million from the Soros-funded Democracy PAC in 2022, Federal Election Commission records show. State Victory Action was founded in 2018 with $11 million in seed funding from Soros and his fellow liberal billionaire Tom Steyer, the Free Beacon reported.
Prostasiewicz enjoyed a roughly $6 million spending advantage over her opponent in the $45 million contest, the most expensive state supreme court race in history.
The Wisconsin Conservation Voters Independent Expenditure Committee, which doled out $1 million in support of Protasiewicz, was bankrolled primarily by the Soros-funded nonprofit America Votes, which funneled $800,000 to the committee in late February and March. Soros’s Open Society network contributed a combined $40.4 million to America Votes from 2017 through 2021.
America Votes frequently passes money over to its affiliated Action Fund, such as in July 2022 when the group transferred $2 million to its political arm. The America Votes Action Fund then contributed $447,500 to the Power to the Polls Action Fund in March, enabling the group to spend over $540,000 on mailings, canvassing, and ads in support of Protasiewicz.
One group Soros did not finance was the Organizing Empowerment PAC, whose murky funding became a flashpoint in the contentious race. The group spent $532,500 on voter mobilization efforts for Protasiewicz, but hasn’t disclosed any of its donors to the Wisconsin Ethics Commission. The Republican Party of Wisconsin alleged the PAC’s failure to disclose its donors to the state was part of a "shady" and illegal scheme to elect Protasiewicz in a March 14 complaint to the Wisconsin Ethics Commission.
Kelly echoed that claim in his concession speech, claiming "This was the most deeply deceitful, dishonorable, despicable campaign I have ever seen run for the courts."
Few other individuals devoted as much money to electing Protasiewicz as Soros, who is a consistent subject of Republican ire. Most recently, Soros has been in the spotlight regarding his role in electing Democratic Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, who this month charged former president Donald Trump with 32 felonies over hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. Legal observers from across the political spectrum have criticized Bragg’s case as flimsy and politically motivated.

What's the Matter With Wisconsin?
Column: The GOP's suburban problem
The Wisconsin State Supreme Court election on April 4 was filled with idiosyncrasies. The winner, liberal candidate Janet Protasiewicz, will determine ideological control of the court and the future of state abortion and election law. She outspent her conservative rival, Daniel Kelly, by millions of dollars, defining him early as an anti-abortion extremist aligned with Donald Trump's MAGA movement.
Kelly had been rejected by voters before, in 2020, and hadn't exactly spent the intervening years moderating his views or improving his favorability rating. The Badger State, of course, is as swingy as you can get: It went for Trump in 2016 by about 23,000 votes and Biden in 2020 by about 20,000; boasts a Democratic governor and a Republican legislative supermajority; and has a U.S. senator from each party. Its House delegation is 6-2 Republican—partially thanks to congressional maps Protasiewicz may soon throw out.
Protasiewicz defeated Kelly by a whopping 11 points. She successfully framed the election as a referendum on Wisconsin's current no-exceptions abortion ban, which went into effect last summer when the U.S. Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade. Wisconsin governor Tony Evers has challenged the ban in court. Protasiewicz has made it clear that she's ready to strike it down. Her state's electorate is too.
The election reinforced two political trends. The first is that if voters believe abortion is on the ballot, they will mobilize to protect access to it. That is what happened in Kansas last summer and, among other places, in Michigan last November. The centrality of abortion is what explains the difference in outcome between this week in Wisconsin and last November's Senate race.
Both contests took place after the end of Roe. And yet, six months ago, Republican pro-life senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin was narrowly reelected over his state's then-lieutenant governor, Democrat Mandela Barnes. Why did Johnson win by 1 point while Kelly lost by 11? Because Johnson had plenty else to talk about, including President Biden's job performance, inflation, and crime.
The judicial election presented a binary choice on a single issue. Nor did it help Kelly that the Wisconsin abortion ban is total. Even pro-choice polling data show that voters are willing to restrict abortion—as long as provisions are made for rape, incest, and life of the mother. Remove those conditions, and the public veers in a pro-choice direction. "What you have to do is argue for protections that the American people see as reasonable versus the extremism of no exceptions, even late-term abortion," GOP strategist Frank Cannon told the AP recently. "And if you do that, it's a winning combination."
Winning combinations are proving difficult for Republicans these days. Republicans still flourish in a post-Roe world—look at the GOP House, and Governors Ron DeSantis, Brian Kemp, Glenn Youngkin, and Mike DeWine, for starters—but only if they draw support from middle-class voters in the suburbs.
Which is why the second trend underscored by the Wisconsin Supreme Court race ought to alarm the GOP. Kelly failed to mobilize the Republican vote in Wisconsin's "WOW" counties: Waukesha, Ozaukee, and Washington. While Kelly did win these historically Republican Milwaukee suburbs, he did so by considerably smaller margins than Johnson in 2022. Johnson, for example, won Waukesha County by 25 points; Kelly won by 16. Johnson won Ozaukee County by 16 points; Kelly won by 4. And Johnson won Washington County by 42 points; Kelly won by 32. The drop-off cost him the election.
If Republicans dominate in rural precincts and Democrats in urban enclaves, then the suburbs are majority makers. Yet the suburbs have been receding from the GOP since the dawn of the Trump era.
Consider: In 2014, the last election before Trump descended on his escalator, Republicans won the suburban vote 55 percent to 45 percent. They won both the white non-college vote and the white college vote by double digits. They won voters making between $50,000 per year and $100,000 per year by 10 points.
By the end of Barack Obama's presidency, majorities among suburban white voters near the middle of the income distribution fueled the GOP's greatest electoral strength in close to a century. Unease over Trump shrank this coalition in 2016: Republicans won the suburbs by 5 points, white non-college voters by 39 points, white college voters by 4 points, and middle-income voters by 4 points. That gave Trump the Electoral College, but not a popular vote majority.
Then Trump entered office. He retained his support among white voters without college degrees in 2018. But the remaining pillars of Republican rule crumbled beneath him. White voters with college degrees voted for Democrats by 4 points. Middle-income voters went for Democrats by 2 points. And the suburbs turned against Republicans, voting Democratic by 11 points.
The same pattern was visible in the 2020 results: Trump won non-college white votes (though by a smaller margin than four years earlier). White college voters went for Joe Biden by 7 points. Middle-income voters split evenly between the parties. And the suburbs voted for Biden by 10 points.
In 2022, non-college white voters turned out for Republicans once more, but Democrats won white college voters by 1 point and the suburbs by 1 point. Middle-income voters returned to the Republican column, 52 percent to 45 percent. The narrowing demographic gaps produced the mixed result of a Republican House and Democratic Senate.
If Republicans were serious about winning Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin in 2024 and thus the White House, they would try to add white voters with college degrees and suburban America atop their non-college rural base. To do so, they would have to replace Donald Trump as party leader. They would have to find a nominee who is pro-life and who can speak about abortion restrictions—with exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother—in a nonthreatening way. They would have to learn the lessons not only of Wisconsin this week, but of every election cycle since 2016. And they would have to move quickly, before 2024 escapes the GOP's grasp.

Liberal Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Janet Protasiewicz sentenced a serial violent felon to just six months in prison for breaking his estranged wife's face in a brutal beating. Less than one year later, the man gunned down the same victim outside her home, nearly killing her, according to court records reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
The offender, Lazarick Spade, allegedly shot his ex-wife to "get even" with her for reporting the prior assault, according to court records.
The disturbing case could fuel concerns about Protasiewicz's sentencing record and professional judgment, after critics have accused her of handing down light sentences to domestic abusers and sexual predators during her time on the Milwaukee Circuit Court. The high-stakes April 4 race between Protasiewicz and her conservative opponent, former state Supreme Court justice Dan Kelly, will decide the ideological breakdown of the swing state's top court and could have national implications for the 2024 presidential elections.
It also raises questions about Protasiewicz's suggestion last week that she only has "one case where someone reoffended." In that incident, which Protasiewicz's opponents have highlighted in negative campaign attacks, she released a child sex offender without jail time who went on to kill a woman in a drunken car crash.
"That is the case where I indicated hindsight is 20/20," said Protasiewicz.
Protasiewicz did not respond to questions about whether she also regrets her decision in the Spade case.
A week before Christmas in 2015, Spade brutally beat his estranged wife after she told him she was ending the relationship and "moving on with her life." At the time of the assault, Spade had escaped from a prison work-release program, where he was supposed to serve a nine-month sentence for abusing the couple’s child.
Spade confronted his wife, who is referred to as T.S. in court records, outside a house in east Milwaukee, according to court records. He pushed her to the ground and then "dragged T.S. and punched and kicked her in the face," according to reports from multiple witnesses, who ran outside to pull Spade off of the victim. "As a result, T.S. sustained facial hematomas and a facial fracture," responding officers told the court.
Spade was initially charged with felony battery and faced up to 10 years in prison as a habitual offender, but the charges were reduced in a plea deal approved by Protasiewicz. She sentenced him to six months in prison.
Less than two years later, in June 2017, Spade ambushed and shot his ex-wife multiple times outside her home in Milwaukee, according to court records.
T.S. "arrived home around 10:55 p.m. and was walking toward her house when [Spade] came toward her and started shooting at her," say the court records. She "ran toward the house as [Spade] continued shooting."
The victim "sustained three through and through gunshot wounds," the records state. "One shot went through her left foot. One shot went through her upper right arm. One shot went through her by the shoulder blade and caused damage to one of her lungs."
In total, Spade fired 19 rounds at T.S., according to investigators.
T.S., who was hospitalized but survived the attack, told police that earlier that day she had run into Spade at the courthouse while taking out papers to file a restraining order against him. He allegedly told her he would "get even with her for sending him to jail" in the assault case.
Spade was convicted by a jury of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in 2019. He is serving 40 years in prison.

1. CRT: Critical Race Theory in all its permutations, regardless of its origins and history, has become the banner of anti-white racism, disguising itself as "anti-racism." Under its banner, white people are told they are worthless, toxic, hateful oppressors. Worse, companies are actually hiring people who promote this toxicity and schools are teaching students to hate white people. Now out in the open, anti-white racism has created a hate-filled atmosphere of constant tension and dissension, where the only thing that matters, first and foremost, is skin color. This can only be laid at the feet of Democrats.
2. TRANS WOMEN IN WOMEN'S SPORTS: The gross unfairness of allowing men into women's sports (no, I will not call them "women") is so blatant and outrageous, that proponents are seen not merely as insane, but malevolent. The destruction of women's sports is viewed by all rational people as evil in the name of wokeness.
3. CORRUPTION IN THE FBI: The malicious and ethics-free raid on Mar-a-Lago is viewed even by many Democrats and all Republicans as vicious political intimidation, with the goal of destroying any followers of Donald Trump. This began in earnest during the "Russia collusion" case and saw its culmination in midnight raids of innocent conservatives revealing a hateful, vengeful vigilantism on the part of the radical left. In the hope that supporters of Trump and other conservative candidates would drop out of politics in fear of similar reprisals, these Gestapo tactics have not only solidified Trump's support and the support of even moderately conservative candidates, but have shown the Left to be petty children in a deranged, red-haze temper tantrum.
4. COVID MASK AND VACCINE MANDATES: Certainly a show of power rather than anything prophylactic against COVID, blue states and leftist groups have revealed that they know the masks do not prevent COVID, but instead are a symbol of big-government Stasi tactics designed to subjugate the citizenry in order to prepare them for eventual control.
5. DRAG QUEENS IN THE SCHOOLS: Young children have been indoctrinated into sexual fetishism and perverse sexual behavior at the behest of school administrators and leftist parents who seem to see nothing morally wrong with gay men dressing up as women in highly sexually-suggestive costumery and behavior. Why they are doing this has become clear: They want to break down all parental control over children and indoctrinate them into pedophilia, perversity, and compliance. For most parents, this was a bustier too far.
6. THE ECONOMY: From the start in 2021 when Joe Biden killed the Keystone pipeline and halted all drilling and new permits, the economy began tanking. Gas prices, supply line problems, paying people not to work, profligate spending, and other avoidable problems has hit the average American smack dab in the wallet. No matter how much the Biden administration denies their role in inflation and no matter how many times Joe says the economy is "strong as hell," Americans watch their buying power dwindle. They want relief and it is clear they will not get it from the Democrat Party.
7. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: From day one, the borders were flung open by the Democrat Party to drug traffickers, murderers, and myriad other miscreants in the hope they would be new Democrat votes. As a result, crime is rampant, blue cities under Democrat rule are suffering and homelessness is on the rise, all the while Biden spokespeople are claiming the "border is closed." Bragg, elected in 2021, has been a disaster for Manhattan. He refuses to seek bail or sentences for violent criminals – armed robbery, drug dealing, violent attacks on innocent civilians and burglary. Disgraced former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried tried to build a political empire to rival Democrat megadonor George Soros.
Puck News reporter Theodore Schleifer wrote that Bankman-Fried personally bought a Democrat startup, Deck, spending roughly $4 to $5 million to buy out the existing investors to the Democrat analytics firm. Bankman-Fried reportedly heard about the startup from Mind the Gap, a Democrat donor network founded by his mother, Barbara Bankman-Fried.
The purchase of Deck served as Bankman-Fried’s political scheme to be the “biggest donor in the Democratic Party,” even outshining Democrat megadonor.

Bankman-Fried and Ryan Salame, co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets, served as two of the largest donors to Republicans and Democrats last cycle. Bankman-Fried fell just below Soros as the largest Democrat donor.

In all, Bankman-Fried donated roughly $40 million to Democrat politicians and PACs, while Salame gave about $23 million to Republicans and PACs supporting the GOP.
Puck News wrote that the former FTX CEO sought advisers and conducted data experiments to help Democrats in the 2024 election cycle:

The following five things are what I believe has murdered the Democrat Party in its sleep:
1. CRT: Critical Race Theory in all its permutations, regardless of its origins and history, has become the banner of anti-white racism, disguising itself as "anti-racism." Under its banner, white people are told they are worthless, toxic, hateful oppressors. Worse, companies are actually hiring people who promote this toxicity and schools are teaching students to hate white people. Now out in the open, anti-white racism has created a hate-filled atmosphere of constant tension and dissension, where the only thing that matters, first and foremost, is skin color. This can only be laid at the feet of Democrats.
2. TRANS WOMEN IN WOMEN'S SPORTS: The gross unfairness of allowing men into women's sports (no, I will not call them "women") is so blatant and outrageous, that proponents are seen not merely as insane, but malevolent. The destruction of women's sports is viewed by all rational people as evil in the name of wokeness.

CORRUPTION IN THE FBI: The malicious and ethics-free raid on Mar-a-Lago is viewed even by many Democrats and all Republicans as vicious political intimidation, with the goal of destroying any followers of Donald Trump. This began in earnest during the "Russia collusion" case and saw its culmination in midnight raids of innocent conservatives revealing a hateful, vengeful vigilantism on the part of the radical left. In the hope that supporters of Trump and other conservative candidates would drop out of politics in fear of similar reprisals, these Gestapo tactics have not only solidified Trump's support and the support of even moderately conservative candidates, but have shown the Left to be petty children in a deranged, red-haze temper tantrum.

COVID MASK AND VACCINE MANDATES: Certainly a show of power rather than anything prophylactic against COVID, blue states and leftist groups have revealed that they know the masks do not prevent COVID, but instead are a symbol of big-government Stasi tactics designed to subjugate the citizenry in order to prepare them for eventual control.

DRAG QUEENS IN THE SCHOOLS: Young children have been indoctrinated into sexual fetishism and perverse sexual behavior at the behest of school administrators and leftist parents who seem to see nothing morally wrong with gay men dressing up as women in highly sexually-suggestive costumery and behavior. Why they are doing this has become clear: They want to break down all parental control over children and indoctrinate them into pedophilia, perversity, and compliance. For most parents, this was a bustier too far.
6. THE ECONOMY: From the start in 2021 when Joe Biden killed the Keystone pipeline and halted all drilling and new permits, the economy began tanking. Gas prices, supply line problems, paying people not to work, profligate spending, and other avoidable problems has hit the average American smack dab in the wallet. No matter how much the Biden administration denies their role in inflation and no matter how many times Joe says the economy is "strong as hell," Americans watch their buying power dwindle. They want relief and it is clear they will not get it from the Democrat Party.
7. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: From day one, the borders were flung open by the Democrat Party to drug traffickers, murderers, and myriad other miscreants in the hope they would be new Democrat votes. As a result, crime is rampant, blue cities under Democrat rule are suffering and homelessness is on the rise, all the while Biden spokespeople are claiming the "border is closed." Squealing like stuck pigs, places like New York City which have reluctantly become home to Texas' illegals, have seen a marked inability to safely house the very illegals they claim to have wanted to live in their "sanctuary city."
8. CRIME: Because of the Democrat rule in blue cities, crime is not being prosecuted in the name of some weird kind of reparations. What the Democrats don't get is that they hurt their own innocent population by allowing criminals a get-out-jail-free card, and by not prosecuting at all. Their racist policies hurt the very people they claim to want to help. Why are they doing this? To deliberately create chaos in the execution of anti-white racism. The one solution to the rising crime rate, the prosecution and incarceration of criminals, is the one thing blue cities under Democrat rule will not do. Mayor Lightfoot makes weird and demonic home videos of herself dancing around in what appears to be a drugged stupor. Rather than be a responsible mayor, she has totally ignored the death-by-violence rate in Chicago. This is another very clear example of Democrats doing what they do best; destroying things.
