Today’s tech barons -- Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and the like -- are much more powerful, much more insidious, and much more dangerous than their counterparts of long ago. They are also just as willing as any Rockefeller to crush their competitors and just as committed as any Carnegie to controlling their workers.
But only our modern Big Tech barons have used their power to police, and yes, rob individuals of individual thoughts with one click, while producing herdlike thinking and behavior with another. In the process, they have also helped diminish America as a unique beacon of freedom in the world.
The New Robber Barons
A free country will always have its robber barons. But not all such barons are equal. Nor are they all equally bad -- or good.
The title was not meant to be a compliment when it was first given to the Rockefellers and Carnegies of the late 19th century. Curiously, it has not been attached at all to today’s Big Tech barons. And yet they are worse, maybe even far worse, than their counterparts of long ago. This is true for many reasons, far from the least of which is that their impact has been to make this country less free.
All our barons have benefited from operating in a country grounded in political and economic freedom. But only our modern Big Tech barons have used their power to police, and yes, rob individuals of individual thoughts with one click, while producing herdlike thinking and behavior with another. In the process, they have also helped diminish America as a unique beacon of freedom in the world.
Today’s tech barons -- Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and the like -- are much more powerful, much more insidious, and much more dangerous than their counterparts of long ago. They are also just as willing as any Rockefeller to crush their competitors and just as committed as any Carnegie to controlling their workers.
More than that, they are also willing to do the bidding of America’s enemies. Witness Apple’s kowtowing to the “request” of the Chinese communist regime that it shut down communication among Hong Kong anti-regime protesters.
In this country they seem far more interested in cooperating with one major political party than the other. Witness the Zuckerberg “investment” of hundreds of millions in the 2020 election, less to bolster American democracy than to assure a Democrat party victory.
What to do, given the clout and predilections of our current robber barons? Ironically, maybe the best answer would be to reverse the course of action taken by the original progressives in their attempt to rein in the original robber barons.
There is little doubt that those barons presented a serious challenge to our founding constitutional order of limited government and divided powers. In fact, so serious was this challenge that both major parties developed reform-minded progressive wings. And yet over the course of the past century those bipartisan progressive reforms have played a major role in further upending that original constitutional order.
Our first progressive president, Theodore Roosevelt, was convinced that something had to be done about the “wealthy criminal class.” Despite his trust-busting reputation, TR’s real emphasis was on building up the state rather than on breaking down the trusts.
Good Darwinian that he was, Republican Roosevelt assumed that evolution toward bigness in business and government was both inevitable and ultimately beneficial. In addition, he presumed that a progressive federal bureaucracy would always be staffed and run by politically disinterested experts. Democrat President Woodrow Wilson essentially agreed, thereby giving the progressive agenda an additional bipartisan sheen.
While this presidential pair did not deny that the Constitution of 1787 may have been a good starting point for a new country, they were both convinced that the time had come to move beyond that ancient document.
Well, given the power and reach of today’s robber barons, coupled with the power and reach of a federal bureaucracy that often operates in tandem with them, it might be time to put that old Constitution to some newly vigorous use. The Founders would likely agree. While they believed in a limited (Jeffersonian) sphere for government, they also endorsed the “energetic” (Hamiltonian) use of government.
If successfully applied, that constitutional energy could -- and should -- generate a great reversal, as opposed to any “Great Reset.” The eventual result might also be a great irony. How so? If the conduct of the original robber barons eventually led to big-government progressivism, the conduct of our modern robber barons could lead to the gradual reversal of the process that gave us an ever-expanding federal government in the first place.
Let’s first concede that both sets of robber barons have been innovators and builders, who have made life better in many ways for countless numbers of Americans. Nonetheless, the social and political costs that have accompanied our modern technological advances are no less real -- and have become much more immediately apparent -- than any environmental costs levied by the barons of long ago. Certainly, the negative impact of Big Tech on society, while subtle, is much greater and ultimately much more damaging than anything the original robber barons might have imagined -- or imposed.
The societal contagions that have been unleashed by Big Tech have been especially damaging among the young. Witness the current social contagion that is the transgender movement.
Finally, the revelations that have come from Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter have exposed the underside of the Rooseveltian vision of a politically neutral federal bureaucracy. Witness the now revealed collusion between the FBI and Twitter to define and condemn what together they decided was “disinformation,” followed by Twitter acting to “deplatform” those deemed to be spreading it.
Only the very Constitution that the original progressives disdained is equipped to halt this juggernaut. With political will, plus executive and judicial support, Congress could reassert itself as the first branch of government, whether by ceasing to surrender its authority to the bureaucracy or by some meaningful trustbusting of Big Tech.
Bureaucracy busting should also take place. No longer remotely bipartisan, the federal bureaucracy has essentially become an arm of the Democrat party. Maybe it’s time to return to a partial version of the old spoils system.
Scrapping the FBI and starting over would be a good next step. Other bureaucracies should be scattered around the country. Disease-ridden with politics, the CDC could remain in Atlanta, so long as it is placed under strict quarantine.
Eliminating the Department of Education and returning schooling decisions to the states and local school boards should also occur. In sum, let’s revitalize localism. That should be a bipartisan goal, but it isn’t.
The ultimate goal would not be to restore the 18th century, but to revive the spirit of America. Such a revival surely makes more sense than continuing to centralize -- and politicize (in one direction only) -- virtually everything.
That such a revival would also be a reversal is deliciously ironic. Really now, what could be more ironic than one day looking back and realizing that this reversal, this devolution, had been triggered by the actions of a new cadre of robber barons whose grasp for power and control far exceeded anything that the Rockefellers and Carnegies could have ever envisioned?
Then again, perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that a different set of robber barons would provoke a different set of reforms. What might be surprising to the original progressives is that today’s reforms cannot possibly be bipartisan. After all, the problem today is not simply the existence of robber barons, but the link between our robber barons and one of our two major political parties.
Nonetheless, adding even more to the irony of it all is this: The power and influence of our modern robber barons is so great, and the possibility of a permanent one-party state is so real, that action must now be taken against not one, but two powerful forces, namely Big Tech and the federal bureaucracy that was initially called into being to counter robber barons far less daunting and far less damaging than the robber barons of today.

Billionaires Line Up Behind Biden for 2024: ‘Stakes Are Higher than Ever’
Billionaires across big business sectors like finance, tech, and media are gearing up to throw millions at President Joe Biden’s reelection bid in 2024.
After Biden announced his reelection bid last week, left-wing billionaires immediately started plotting to get behind the 80-year-old in the 2024 presidential election. According to interviews and sources who spoke to CNBC, billionaires across many industries want in on helping to reelect Biden.
LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, worth $2 billion, is reportedly offering to host fundraisers for Biden. Only a few weeks ago, Hoffman visited the White House, likely to meet with Biden and his team regarding the election.
Other billionaires getting behind Biden are investor Haim Saban, worth $2.9 billion, DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, worth $1 billion, and Signum Global Advisors founder Charles Myers whose net worth is unknown.
“Stakes are higher than ever,” Myers told CNBC.
Also set to pitch in is hedge fund executive Donald Sussman who told CNBC that Biden was akin to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in what he has legislatively and executively accomplished with his “Build Back Better” agenda.
“I am thrilled his unique leadership will continue,” Sussman said.
Alexander Soros, the son of billionaire George Soros, is also likely to throw his financial weight behind Biden’s reelection. A recent report indicated that the 37-year-old had visited Biden’s White House some 14 times since early 2021.
The big-dollar billionaire donors for Biden are expected and welcome news for a White House stacked with former executives and employees tied to big business, big tech, and Wall Street.
In the 2020 election, more than 30 of Biden’s biggest donors had Wall Street ties while CNN analysis at the time showed that Biden’s campaign was backed by nearly “all the big banks” on Wall Street.

The media gave great prominence to former president Obama, filmmaker Steven Spielberg, and rock star Bruce Springsteen making a surprise appearance at a Barcelona restaurant with a last-minute dinner reservation on Thursday.
The BBC carried details about the restaurateur being surprised by the visit and what he served his guests. There were details about the monument that the Obamas, Spielberg, and Springsteen visited.
Most articles mentioned restaurant staff member Pol Perello posting a photo on Instagram of the staff and chefs posing with the celebrity trio.

Let’s overlook the fact that owing to the nature of Obama's security he cannot actually make impromptu appearances without the Secret Service doing a full inspection of the place and its surroundings – the restaurant must have known well in advance about the appearance.

When Hillary Clinton said that Trump supporters belong to the basket of deplorables, she wasn’t misspeaking, she was expressing exactly what she thought.
When Obama referred to Republican voters as bigoted and embittered individuals who cling to guns or religion he didn't have a momentary lapse of judgment.
He was instead expressing the Democrat groupthink.
The modern Democrat party has disdain for the white working class, especially those who live in states that do not vote for them.

When the Democrats push for gun control, it applies to regular people only. They know they will remain unaffected because they have 24x7 private security and live in mansions with imposing walls. They also know that criminals will ignore that law and leftist district attorneys will not prosecute them. Guns are among the few affordable means of self-defense for working-class people. They will become targets.
When the Democrats open up the border, they know that they will never ever suffer the consequences. They will never lose a job because an illegal alien is willing to work for less. They will never be hurt because a criminal illegal alien engages in violence. They know their localities will not be overrun by unvetted foreigners. They know their resources will not be consumed by migrants.
When the illegal migrants were dropped in Martha’s Vineyard, the Obamas didn’t welcome them into their homes. New York Mayor Eric Adams is livid that unvetted illegal aliens from Texas are overrunning his city. The Democrats only advocate for compassion when they do not have to make sacrifices.
When the Democrats advocated for lockdowns, they knew they would never be affected. They lived in mansions with spacious gardens and if they felt suffocated indoors, they could amble around in their gardens or sunbathe on the terrace. The sufferers were working-class people who couldn’t step out for a stroll, who couldn’t earn a living, and who couldn’t meet their loved ones, including those who were ailing or dying.
When the Democrats advocate for green laws, once again small businesses are hurt because it means additional expenses to satisfy the criteria; for big businesses the expenditure is minuscule.
When Democrats rally against coal-based electricity, they know the homes of regular people will plunge into darkness while their mansions will remain unaffected.
When the Democrats cause inflation, they know they will never be affected by the consequences of rising prices; once again it is regular people.
Back in 2019, Bill Maher hoped for a recession because it would lead to Trump’s loss in 2020. Maher didn’t care that the recession would hurt the lives of regular people. Maher, too, wasn’t misspeaking. He was saying exactly what Democrats say behind closed doors. Maher's wish became a reality during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The goal was to destroy Trump’s economy and cause frustration and anger among people hoping that they would vote against Trump. They did not care about the suffering they caused.

Thousands of skilled migrants with H-1B visas working as subcontractors at well-known corporations like Disney, FedEx, Google, and others appear to have been underpaid by at least $95 million. Victims include not only the H-1B workers but also the U.S. workers who are either displaced or whose wages and working conditions degrade when employers are allowed to underpay skilled migrant workers with impunity.
Chamber of Commerce, Special Interest Groups Launch Lobbying Campaign Demanding More Immigration to U.S.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and hundreds of special interest groups have launched a lobbying campaign to demand more legal immigration to the United States so business has a constant flow of cheaper foreign workers to hire for American jobs.
On Monday, the Chamber and more than 430 special interest groups unveiled the Legal Immigration and Border Enforcement Reform This Year (LIBERTY) campaign to formally ask Congress and President Joe Biden’s administration to increase legal immigration levels for the benefit of the business lobby.
“Companies are experiencing significant workforce shortages despite their sizable investments in expanding U.S. talent pipelines,” the Chamber and other groups wrote in a letter to Congress. “As a result, companies of all sizes and across a host of industries are wrestling with the myriad problems caused by their inability to adequately tap into global talent to meet their workforce needs.”
Every year the United States gives more than a million green cards to foreign nationals in addition to another million temporary work visas to foreign workers. These historically high, decades-long legal immigration levels are on top of hundreds of thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens who are being added to the workforce each year after securing work permits.
The Chamber’s suggestion that businesses need more foreign workers to hire comes as labor market data shows that the Biden administration is rapidly expanding the United States workforce by funneling millions of border crossers, illegal aliens, foreign visa workers, and legal immigrants into American jobs.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, close to two million fewer native-born Americans were working compared to the same time in 2019, while two million foreign-born workers were added to the workforce.
At the same time, millions of working and middle class Americans are left on the labor market sidelines with few incentives to seek jobs.
Specifically, the Chamber and other groups want legal immigration levels “significantly” increased and a massive expansion of foreign visa workers as well as new visa programs.
The lobbying campaign comes as the nation’s labor market remains tight — a situation the Chamber of Commerce and special interest groups see as a downside for employers as they must pay higher wages, offer better benefits, and compete for employees.
While a tight labor market drives up U.S. wages, a flooded labor market from mass immigration helps redistribute billions in wealth away from working- and middle-class Americans to the nation’s top earners. It also tilts the economy in favor of employers rather than employees.
Republican voters, in particular, want less legal immigration; they view the issue as one centered around labor policy.
The latest Rasmussen Reports survey found that a majority — 54 percent — of GOP voters said they want legal immigration levels cut at least in half. Meanwhile, almost half of swing voters said they would like to see legal immigration levels reduced by at least a quarter.
The Heritage Foundation’s blueprint for a future Republican presidential administration falls much more in line with the base of GOP voters, as well as swing voters, when it comes to legal immigration levels and foreign competition in the labor market.
The “2025 Mandate for Leadership” blueprint calls for the elimination of the H-2B and H-2A visa programs, both of which outsource blue-collar American jobs to foreign workers, and urges Republican presidential candidates to throw their support behind “Hire American” rules.
“Congress should mandate that all new federal contracts require at least 70 percent of the contractor’s employees to be U.S. citizens, with the percentage increasing to at least 95 percent over a 10-year period,” the blueprint states.
The Chamber of Commerce, along with other business groups, attempted late last year to promote an amnesty for illegal aliens, but the initiative ultimately failed to gain steam.
