Graham: AG Garland Poured ‘Gasoline’ on Fire with Hunter Biden Special Counsel Appointment
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said Friday on FNC’s “America Reports” that Attorney General Merrick Garland appointing David Weiss as special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation was akin to pouring gasoline on a fire.
Graham said, “This was a political decision, not a legal decision. They’re trying to put out a fire, and they just poured gasoline on it. Nobody in their right mind believes that making him a special counsel, Mr. Weiss, cleans up the mess that’s been created.”
He continued, “The plea agreement blew up. And to think that the very guy who wrote the plea agreement is seriously going to continue to investigate the Bidens is laughable. The guy that wrote the plea agreement did it in a fashion to give Hunter Biden the biggest break, maybe in American legal history. Does anybody in their right mind trust the Weiss team to continue to fairly and impartially investigate the Hunter Biden, Joe Biden matter? I don’t.”
Graham added, “This is like the dumbest, dumber-than-dirt political move. On a Friday afternoon, and anything bad you want to talk about on Friday afternoon, they make a four-minute announcement. We’re going to turn Weiss into special counsel to remove any and all doubt — Andy’s right. There is no ongoing investigation of Hunter Biden or Joe Biden. Why would you accept a plea to half the case if you continue to investigate the guy for other crimes? Nobody ever does that.”
“The only reason we’re talking about this is the plea deal blew up because of a good judge,” he continued. “In that plea agreement, they were going to wipe out all the financial transactions as a potentially criminal if he did the diversion agreement on the gun. There’s never been a deal like this in the history of America. So the judge blew up the deal. And Weiss, according to the whistleblower, has had pressure on him from day one to short-circuit this investigation. So when I hear the attorney general tell me today, I’m going to make Weiss special counsel that creates more problems and then answers that it gives.”

Report: Hunter Biden Heading for Trial; Sweetheart Plea Deal Abandoned
Court papers revealed Friday the president’s son Hunter Biden’s tax and gun crimes case will now likely go to trial, with negotiations over a new sweetheart plea deal appearing to collapse.
The case will likely now be moved out of Delaware. The court papers indicated a plea deal had reached an “impasse” and the case is headed toward trial.
NBC News reported, “Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges related to his failure to pay income taxes earlier this year. But while standing in court last month waiting to enter the plea, the agreement fell apart over confusion about a separate gun charge.”
Lawyers for Hunter Biden had also indicated they believed the botched plea agreement would settle all matters facing the president’s son, but prosecutors said other investigations remain ongoing.
“After the hearing, the parties continued negotiating but reached an impasse. A trial is therefore in order,” prosecutors said in their Friday filing, the NBC News report sets out.
The White House declined comment, referring reporters to the Justice Department and Hunter Biden’s lawyers.

Darrell Issa Raises Concerns over Hunter-Linked Adviser on 2015 Ukraine Trip with Joe Biden
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), former chair of the House Oversight Committee, raised concerns over current President Joe Biden adviser Amos Hochstein, who was aboard a 2015 flight to Ukraine with then-Vice President Joe Biden.
On Thursday, the Oversight Committee retweeted a photo of Hochstein, then-Special Envoy, aboard Air Force Two on the way to Ukraine, briefing then-Vice President Joe Biden.
The committee said the photo was taken on the same trip where Joe Biden lobbied the Ukrainian government to fire top prosecutor Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings. The energy company paid Hunter Biden $83,000 a month for a board position to obtain the “Biden brand,” as Devon Archer described the arrangement.
“Current White House staffer Amos Hochstein was in communication with Hunter and Burisma while working for then-VP Joe Biden,” the committee posted on Twitter. “According to obtained emails, there were multiple conversations between Burisma, Hunter, and Hochstein while Hochstein was working as a federal government employee as well as multiple logged meetings with VP Biden including the day after Shokin was fired.”
The unearthed photo raised concern among Republicans.
Hochstein was appointed as Joe Biden’s special coordinator for global infrastructure and energy security in 2021. In 2022, Biden appointed him as special presidential coordinator.
Hochstein’s involvement in the Biden family business is well documented. On April 16, 2015, Hochstein met with Joe Biden at the White House, the visitor logs show. That meeting occurred the same day Hunter Biden introduced Joe Biden to Burisma executive Vadym Pozharskyi and other business associates during a dinner at Café Milano in Washington, DC.
“Dear Hunter, thank you for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent [sic] some time together,” read an email Hunter Biden received from Pozharskyi the next day.
In November of 2015, Hunter Biden and Hochstein met for coffee at a Starbucks in Georgetown. On several dates afterward, Hochstein met with then-Vice President Joe Biden.
One of those meetings happened on December 11, 2015, two days after Hochstein and Joe Biden returned from Ukraine. Joe Biden visited Ukraine from December 7-9, 2015.
Three months after the visit, the Ukrainian government fired Shokin.
Joe Biden bragged about the firing during a 2018 appearance at the Council of Foreign Relations.
“I said, ‘I’m telling you, you’re not getting the billion dollars.’ I said, ‘you’re not getting the billion. I’m going to be leaving here in, I think it was about six hours,'” Biden told the audience. “I looked at them and said, ‘I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money.’ Well, son of a bitch. He got fired.”
Devon Archer, Hunter Biden’s best friend in business, was asked about the firing by Tucker Carlson.
“Joe Biden, of course, was the driving force behind his firing?” Carlson asked Archer during an interview released last week.
“Yeah, he was involved in that,” Archer replied.
“Joe Biden knew that his son was on the board of this company that was being hassled by the prosecutor whose firing he was calling for?” Carlson asked.
“Right,” Archer said.

AG Merrick Garland Appoints David Weiss as Special Counsel in Hunter Biden Probe
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed U.S. prosecutor David Weiss as a special counsel in the ongoing investigation of Hunter Biden to apparently provide a degree of separation between the probe and President Joe Biden, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday.
The DOJ said Weiss will be responsible for the “ongoing investigation” into Hunter Biden, “as well as for any other matters that arose or may arise from that investigation.”
Weiss was overseeing the Hunter Biden probe and was not granted special counsel status, according to IRS whistleblowers.
On Tuesday, Weiss reportedly asked to be appointed as a special counsel and Garland agreed it was “in the public interest” to do so, the attorney general said.
“David Weiss can’t be trusted and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption,” Russell Dye, a spokesperson for House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-KY), told Breitbart News in a statement.
“Weiss has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair that a federal judge rejected it,” he added. “We will continue to pursue facts brought to light by brave whistleblowers as well as Weiss’s inconsistent statements to Congress.”
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) also was skeptical of the appointment of a special counsel.
“This move by AG Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of @GOPoversight‘s mounting evidence of President Biden’s role in his family’s schemes selling ‘the brand’ for millions of dollars to foreign nationals,” he said in a statement:
The appointment of a special counsel comes on the same day that news broke that Weiss’ prosecutors acknowledged that the gun and tax charges against Hunter will likely have to be resolved at a trial in California or Washington, D.C., NBC News reported:

The judge asked the parties to hammer out the agreement and return later, leaving Hunter Biden to enter a not-guilty plea while it’s litigated.
Lawyers for Hunter Biden had also indicated they believed that the plea agreement would settle all matters facing the president’s son, but prosecutors said that other investigations continued.
The DOJ’s probe into Hunter Biden could implicate Joe Biden. A witness who testified before the jury was reportedly asked to identify the “big guy.”
