Sanctuary City Denver Spends Millions Flying, Busing Illegal Aliens Elsewhere

The sanctuary city of Denver, Colorado, is spending millions in local taxpayer money to provide newly arrived border crossers and illegal aliens with free flights and bus tickets out of the state.

Records obtained by CBS News Colorado reveal that Denver officials have spent almost $4.5 million in taxpayer money thus far to send more than 12,000 border crossers and illegal aliens to other cities and states across the United States.

While most are being given free bus tickets to leave Denver, about 335 border crossers and illegal aliens have been awarded free flights — at a cost of $115,000 — in the last five months alone.

“We say, ‘Where do you want to go?’ and then we buy them a ticket, usually by bus, and get them on their way,” Jon Ewing with Denver Human Services told CBS News.

According to the records obtained by CBS News, most of the border crossers and illegal aliens being given bus tickets and flights out of Denver are being sent to other sanctuary cities like Chicago, Illinois, and New York City, New York.

Others are heading to cities like Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as back to Texas. Smaller cities such as Wilson, North Carolina, are also a destination for those being sent out of Denver.

In less than a year, Denver has spent close to $32 million on border crossers and illegal aliens — including $7.5 million on housing and nearly $5 million on food. By the end of the year, as Breitbart News reported, Denver officials expect migrant spending to hit $40 million.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, the illegals' friend

Mayor Mike Johnston (D) of Denver has revealed the thinking of Democrats and leftists on immigration

The picture is as disorienting as a Salvador Dali painting.

Mayor Johnston realizes only one aspect of immigration policy. He seems unable to see the others. For example, he seems happy to be mayor of a sanctuary city and to welcome illegal immigrants warmly, but he doesn’t seem to grasp that his problems stem from those policies.

One has to wonder if the mayor is really as clueless as he seems or if he is just propagandizing for his party and the socialist Left.

During January 2024 Mayor Johnston went with a Colorado delegation of Democrat politicians to Washington D.C. to lobby Congress: “Denver, like many cities in America, is a vibrant, thriving city full of generous folks who want to see everyone succeed,” Johnston said. “We are also a city right now that is facing a humanitarian crisis and a fiscal crisis unlike anything we’ve seen in the last 25 years.

“And that is the result of what we know is the ongoing influx of migrant arrivals who are seeking asylum in America and the system that is not adequately helping them to succeed.”

Johnston uses the euphemism ‘migrant’ instead of saying ‘illegal immigrants.’ Also, the mayor asserts that all the arrivals are seeking asylum. That is not true; in fact, while most may say they are seeking asylum, the majority are not.

Notably left out of the delegation’s itinerary in D.C. was a visit to President Biden to ask him to close the border right away to stem the tide that’s swamping Denver.

In an interview with Fox News Reporter Laurence Jones, Johnston was asked, “At what point does your city reach its breaking point?”

Johnston:  “Yeah, I think our city is very close to its breaking point now, and we’ve been talking to leaders in D.C. and around the country about how we can take action here. I think we have successfully welcomed almost forty thousand migrants in the last year, and we know what it takes to do this successfully. We just need that help, and the things we need are... federal dollars, but the most important thing is we need  work authorizations for folks when they arrive and we need those resources at the border so that you can add more security at the border and so you can help process those asylum claims, so the folks who do arrive here can work. The challenge we have is you have someone that will arrive in Denver who has been admitted on an asylum claim but their court date for their asylum case is six years away, and they’re in Denver for six years without the ability to work and support themselves, and that means we have to support them, and that’s not what they want to do or what we want them to do.”

Laurence Jones says that he has never seen the usually warm and friendly Denver residents so enraged, and not because they’re anti-immigrant, but because of how city government is prioritizing illegal immigrants over citizens. Johnston turns the talk back to federal dollars.

Jones also asked about the city having to push illegal immigrants out of shelters and who is responsible for this. Johnston answers that they have a length-of-stay policy and brings up the Democrat talking points: the border has been broken for 40 years, both parties are at fault.

Finally, it seems that Johnston does not have in his field of view the actual humanitarian crisis that Joe Biden caused. On the journey, women and children are sexually assaulted and traumatized; about one thousand people have died on the way. Mexican cartels traffic fentanyl into the U.S., which has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans, and traffic innocent women and children for sex and labor slaves in our country.

Johnston doesn’t mention these terrible things. Does he know?

Mayor Johnston has shown that Democrats’ thinking is way lopsided on immigration. He has told us how they really see things.

llegal Immigration Forcing Denver Hospital to Turn Away Patients: ‘Going to Break’ the System

DENVER, CO - JANUARY 3 : People pack and prepare to leave the largest migrant encampment on 27th Ave. between Zuni St. and Alcott St. in Denver, Colorado on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. The City Council has allocated $300,000 for migrant families from this campsite to help cover their first …

Illegal immigration is forcing a Denver, Colorado hospital to turn away patients as illegal aliens overwhelm the system with unpaid medical bills, a local report details.

According to the Denver Post, the city’s hospital system, known as Denver Health, is on the brink of collapse as waves of illegal aliens arrive without any means of paying for medical treatment.

The Post reports:

In 2023, Denver Health provided about $136 million in care that it didn’t receive compensation for, CEO Donna Lynne told the Denver City Council’s finance and government committee last week. That figure includes care to people covered by Medicaid when the rates the program paid didn’t cover the full costs, she said. About $100 million of that went to people living in Denver. [Emphasis added]

Denver Health cut costs last year by closing 15 beds that could be used for patients needing psychiatric or addiction treatment, reducing the raises it had planned as a way to retain employees, and postponing renovations on its oldest clinics, Lynne said. [Emphasis added]

“What I think is not being said is that Denver Health is at a critical, critical point, and that we need to take this up in 2024,” she said. “Because our costs exceed our revenues, we are turning down patients every day, particularly in the area of mental health and substance abuse.” [Emphasis added]

Denver Health CEO Donna Lynne told the Post that in 2023, about 8,000 border crossers and illegal aliens living in Denver made some 20,000 visits to the hospital system — costing local taxpayers millions in unpaid medical bills.

Lynne said illegal immigration to Denver is “going to break” the city’s hospital system.

As Breitbart News has chronicled, illegal immigration often sticks American taxpayers with billions in unpaid medical costs that drive hospital systems to the brink. The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimates that illegal immigration costs the nation’s hospital systems at least $23 billion annually.

Denver: Crews Sweep Migrant Encampments as More Arrive

The city of Denver, Colorado, has begun the process of clearing out migrant encampments as more arrive from across the southern border.

The crew began on Wednesday clearing out a migrant camp housing hundreds of people at Zuni Street and Speer Boulevard in the Jefferson Park neighborhood. It came one day after the migrants had attended a city council meeting voicing their concerns about the sweep.

“The city said it will connect those living in the camp with housing and is working to open two more shelters. The city also said it has already received more than 300 rental applications, and nearly 100 people have either moved in or are preparing to move into housing,” noted KDVR.

The city confirmed to reporters that a significant number of migrants have been arriving in the city since December.

“Since December, more than 140 buses have arrived from Texas. Denver is also operating seven migrant shelters with 4,400 people being sheltered,” the outlet noted.

“At around 10:30 a.m., Denver Mayor Mike Johnston visited and spoke at the cleanup,” it continued. “He reiterated that those living at the encampment would be moved indoors to three different shelters. Johnston said 386 migrants have applied for housing and 95 have already moved into housing.”

As Breitbart News previously reported, the city of Denver has now hit a point where its status as a “sanctuary city” may come into question as more migrants keep arriving.

“We’re going to hit a capacity at which we just won’t be able anymore to manage the amount of inflow. And so, we’re trying to avoid that problem, but we know we can’t keep growing at this pace,” the mayor told MSNBC.

“When I took the oath of office six months ago, we had about 400 migrants in shelter[s]. We have more than ten times that number right now,” he added. “We’ve brought 35,000 through this year. And, remarkably, we’ve been able to get 99% of them up and placed into housing or work or onward travel. And so, we have been very successful, but now we’re hitting a breaking point at which there’s just not enough volume of work or housing in the city to support this ongoing volume, not to mention the impact on city budgets.”
