A Chicago woman bravely defended herself from a suspected thief on Wednesday by grabbing his gun after three other people were robbed near her university’s campus just minutes apart.

Madelyn, or “Maddi,” 21, was walking home from her classes at the University of Chicago near 56th Street and South University just before 3:00 p.m. when an armed, masked man snatched her phone in a shocking incident caught on surveillance footage.

“I was just walking home from class and I see a man in a mask approach me,” Maddi told ABC7. “And he kind of comes towards me and I think to myself, ‘just keep walking,’ but then we have an altercation.”

The video shows Maddi tussling with the attacker before she was able to grab ahold of his gun, pull out the magazine, and toss it into a bush:

Meanwhile, a male bystander was seated on the ground just feet away, watching the man assault Maddi.

After Maddi threw the magazine, the suspect began moving towards her again, but she was able to run away.

The masked robber then appeared to search for the magazine before hopping into a dark-colored vehicle that was parked nearby, the local station reported.

“I think fight definitely kicked in, but I’m in no way advocating of resisting armed robbery. I think it was really not the right decision looking back on it,” Maddi said. She’s just grateful that she wasn’t hurt.

She also clarified that she doesn’t blame the campus or the bystander and noted that the police did a “great job.”

“I think it’s just finding the people who did this attack, because they will do it again,” the student added, saying she usually feels safe while walking through the campus.

A similar incident occurred just ten minutes before Maddi was accosted. Four armed suspects ran up to two students who were walking in the 5600 block of South University and demanded their belongings, the Chicago Police Department said.

“Those suspects then got into a black Infiniti car and drove off,” according to ABC7.

Then, just five minutes later, two armed suspects robbed another student in the 1300 block of East 56th Street. They escaped in a four-door black vehicle.

Thankfully, none of those students were physically injured.

University of Chicago Police made a statement following the string of robberies, instructing students to “be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary.”

“Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street. When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you. There is safety in numbers,” the statement said.

As of Friday, no arrests have been announced in relation to the robberies.

Chicago Man Accused of Attempted Carjacking Soon After Being Put on Pretrial Release in Stolen Car Case

Gregory King
Chicago Police Department

A man in Chicago, Illinois, is accused of an attempted carjacking that happened less than a month after he was placed on pretrial release regarding possession of a stolen vehicle as the area suffers under rampant crime.

CWB Chicago on Sunday identified the suspect in the case as 22-year-old Gregory King.

“Chicago police records show the man wasn’t even taken to court to see a judge after being arrested in the stolen car case because the SAFE-T Act allowed him to be sent home from the police station,” the outlet said.

An image shows the suspect:

King was arrested on the afternoon of March 15, 2024, when someone called 911 about an individual breaking into a vehicle and taking a seat inside a Range Rover on East 75th Street.

Officers located the Range Rover, pulled it over, and arrested the suspect as he tried to bail out. Approximately half an hour before the arrest, the car had been reported stolen.

King was released several hours after authorities charged him with possessing a stolen motor vehicle and a pair of misdemeanors for allegedly breaking into another car.

King is accused of trying to obtain another car via carjacking less than a month later.

In that case, a man got the attention of Chicago police officers in their squad car and told police two men tried to rob him and struck him in the face. The other man involved in the incident was not charged.

Police later stopped King, and the victim told them he was sitting inside his vehicle when the suspect allegedly demanded that he open the door before hitting him.

“King is charged with attempted vehicular hijacking and misdemeanor battery,” the CWB report said, adding, “Judge William Fahy detained him as a safety threat, pointing to the fact that he already had another felony case pending as one reason King should stay in jail.”

Social media users shared their thoughts on the report, one person writing, “Every decent, law-abiding, hard-working, taxpaying person in the city needs to come together and demand the SAFE-T be repealed and criminals start going to jail.”

“Pritzker the democrat governor of Illinois all proud of his SAFE-T Act. The pro-criminal anti-citizen anti-police act. Vote every Democrat out of office,” another user commented.

In February, a prostitute in the Chicago area was accused of carjacking a client at gunpoint before leading police officers on a high-speed chase, crashing into another car, then running from the scene, Breitbart News reported.

According to CBS Chicago, carjackers have been targeting drivers parked at gas stations in the Chicago area, and video footage shows one incident happening in broad daylight:

Breitbart News reported on April 15 that at least 43 people were shot and seven of them died over that weekend in Mayor Brandon Johnson’s (D) Chicago.

WATCH — Police: Seattle 13-Year-Old Stole Woman’s Bag and Punched Her

A 13-year-old boy is accused of stealing a woman’s purse and hitting her in Seattle, Washington, on Wednesday, an incident that has disturbed neighbors.

The incident happened at the Rite Aid pharmacy in the 2600 block of Southwest Barton Street, Fox 13 reported Wednesday. Resident Tary Nelson told the outlet, “The whole idea of them being so young — that’s what really is painful to listen to. It really is.”

Law enforcement said that when officers arrived at the scene, the victim informed them a worker had confronted several teenagers who allegedly did not pay for the items they picked up inside the store.

The victim also reportedly spoke up about those allegations, the Fox article continued:

The woman stated to law enforcement that one of the teens approached her and forcibly took her purse before making a dash towards the pharmacy exit. In pursuit, she managed to catch up to him at the entrance. However, she reported that the teenager then grabbed her shirt and forcefully threw her to the ground. Despite her attempts to chase after him, the situation escalated when he allegedly struck her multiple times in the face.

The teen suspect, along with the group, fled eastbound on Southwest Barton Street. The victim contacted the authorities, leading officers to locate the suspect and two other teenagers near 18th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Barton Street.

When speaking of the victim, Nelson said, “She was very bold to go after them. I would have never done something like that.”

Video footage shows several people picking up the woman’s belongings that fell out of her bag. However, those individuals then walk away from the scene. The clip also shows the teenager allegedly punching the woman in the face, according to Inside Edition.

When police officers find and confront the teenager, they tell him he is under arrest for robbery. “Robbery?” he asks them. Moments later, he tries to run from the police, who eventually handcuff him as he lies on the ground:

The outlet noted that two other individuals with the suspect were released.

Officials booked the 13-year-old into the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center on suspicion of robbery.

Seattle Times/Suffolk University poll conducted in June found that one-third of Seattle residents were considering leaving the area for good due to home prices and rampant crime, Breitbart News reported in July.

“Out of the respondents who report wanting to move, 80 percent rate the city poorly as a place to live, and 66 percent report feeling unsafe in their neighborhood,” the article said.
