Mother of 3 abandoned boys and dead brother speaks out
Harris County, Texas — The mother of three boys authorities say were found abandoned in their Houston area apartment along with the skeletal remains of their young brother is denying responsibility – and apologizing at the same time.
Gloria Williams, 35, spoke with CBS Houston affiliate KHOU in an exclusive jailhouse interview Thursday.
One of the sons, 15, called the Harris County Sheriff's Department Sunday and said his brother, Kendrick, 8, had been dead for a year and his body was in the apartment, according to the agency. Deputies found the teen and two brothers, 10 and 7, living alone there, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. The 15-year-old told them his parents hadn't lived in the apartment for several months.
Williams is charged with injury to a child by omission and tampering with evidence (human corpse).
Her boyfriend, 32-year-old Brian Coulter, is charged with killing Kendrick.
Investigators say Williams failed to protect them or get them help despite her boyfriend allegedly beating one of them to death and continuing to abuse the others.
Asked what happened, Williams told KHOU reporter Grace White, "I'm sorry. I didn't do it."
When White asked Williams if she knew Kendrick was dead, her response was a simple "No."
But according to court documents, investigators say Williams altered, destroyed and concealed Kendrick's body to get rid of evidence.
When White asked Williams why she left the kids alone, she said, "I checked on them every two weeks."
But when pressed, she didn't want to elaborate.
Melody Robinson, one of the children's paternal grandmothers, said Williams has a total of six kids ranging from 7 to 17. Robinson has custody of one of them, a 13-year-old girl Williams first brought into Robinson's home when she was just 2 weeks old.
"Her mom was very unstable. She was sleeping on the floor at her grandmother's house with the babies, and so I just asked her to give her to me," Robinson told White.
Robinson said she had no idea Kendrick was dead and the children were abandoned.
She said the last time she saw Williams was last November, when another of Williams' children, a 17-year-old girl, wanted to come live with Robinson because of Williams' boyfriend's behavior.
"She just got tired seeing him abuse her siblings and when she stepped in to try to protect them, she put her out," said Robinson.
Investigators said Williams and Coulter were arrested outside a public library where they were looking up news articles.
A candlelight vigil for Kendrick is planned for Saturday.
Downtown Chicago Shootings Surge 220 Percent Since 2019
Shootings in the downtown area of Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago have increased 220 percent since 2019.
The Chicago Sun-Times points out that the 220 percent surge is in the Central police district and is measured in “shootings per 1,000 residents.”
The Central police district “includes much of the downtown business district.”
The Near North district, which also “includes parts of downtown and also Lincoln Park,” has seen a 120 percent surge in shootings.

In addition to shootings, Chicago’s downtown area has witnessed “a 35 percent increase in sexual assaults.” And vehicle thefts have shot up 51 percent.
Deputy Mayor of Public Safety John O’Malley told the Sun-Times, “Not only are we trying to deal with things that are happening downtown…[but also] dealing with and having these same conversations and same meetings with community members all across the city, where some areas violence is a daily, if not hourly, concern.”
Fox32 reports that 11 people were shot Thursday alone in Mayor Lightfoot’s Chicago. Two of the shooting victims succumbed to their wounds.
HeyJackass.com notes that 3,220 people have been shot and wounded in Chicago thus far in 2021, and another 668 have been shot and killed.

Thieves have repeatedly targeted retailers on and near the Magnificent Mile and Chicago police recently shared video footage of another alleged crime.
“The footage shows two men stealing purses worth tens of thousands of dollars from Bottega Veneta, 800 North Michigan, around 2:54 p.m. on October 11, according to a source and CPD’s media statement,” CWB Chicago reported Sunday.
Surveillance video appeared to show a suspect wearing a red hoodie being allowed into the store where the person walked past a woman in a black shirt, then pushed her out of the way and grabbed two bags from a shelf.
Moments later, a suspect in a black hoodie appeared to grab bags off the shelves as the woman watched:
“If you recognize these individuals, or have any information, please contact Detective DiVito #20645 at (312)744-8263. You can also submit an anonymous tip at www.CPDTIP.com,” the Chicago Police Department video’s text read.
“If you see these individuals, DO NOT APPROACH! Call 9-1-1,” the video added.
The Bottega Veneta store was reportedly hit by a bigger group of thieves who employed a similar ruse to enter in September, according to the CWB Chicago article:
Around 4 o’clock that afternoon, an employee admitted a man into the boutique, and about eleven other men poured in behind the first. According to a property management company’s email to nearby residents, the crew collected about 35 handbags, which retail for thousands of dollars each, and ran out the door. A police report said the crew escaped in at least two cars, including a gray Honda CRV.
Also in September, an Ulta Beauty store in Chicago was apparently robbed during store hours and a customer recorded the incident.
The video showed three individuals wearing masks dumping products into bags, and the man behind the camera was clearly shocked at the scene:
“Insane, insane, y’all. Y’all, this is the middle of the Ulta right now,” he commented before the individuals exited the shop.

The ongoing shoplifting surge has forced Walgreens to close five more San Francisco stores as local law enforcement continues to do next to nothing to curtail the problem.
In a statement to SF Gate, Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso confirmed “organized retail crime” has strangled San Francisco stores.
“Organized retail crime continues to be a challenge facing retailers across San Francisco, and we are not immune to that,” Caruso said. “Retail theft across our San Francisco stores has continued to increase in the past few months to five times our chain average.”
“During this time to help combat this issue, we increased our investments in security measures in stores across the city to 46 times our chain average in an effort to provide a safe environment,” he added.
Asha Safai, San Francisco Board of Supervisor for District 11 admitted to feeling “devastated” over the closure a Walgreens store that has “been a staple for seniors, families and children for decades.”
“I am completely devastated by this news – this Walgreens is less than a mile from seven schools and has been a staple for seniors, families and children for decades. This closure will significantly impact this community,” he tweeted.
Safai told SFGate that the shoplifting had crippled the store’s bottom-line and endangered the staff and customers to an unhealthy degree.
“This is a sad day for San Francisco,” Safai said. “We can’t continue to let these anchor institutions close that so many people rely on.”
Shoplifting has skyrocketed in San Francisco recently, likely a result of Proposition 47, which dictates stealing would not be a felony in California if the item stolen did not exceed $950.
The damage has been felt across a range of business outlets.
In May of this year, The San Francisco News described the situation as being “out of control,” noting that 17 Walgreens have had to close in the past five years due to rampant shoplifting in the city.
17 Walgreen locations in San Francisco have closed their doors within the last five years according to a report from the SF Chronicle. Ten of these closures transpired from 2019 to this year with the last Walgreens store to close its door as of this writing, back on March 17. The cause of the closures is due to rampant shoplifting and looting that has transpired at Walgreen locations in the city believed to be perpetuated by an organized crime ring.
On Thursday, May 13 a hearing was held by the Board of Supervisors with retailers, the SFPD, the district attorney’s office, and probation departments. Brendan Dugan, director of organized retail crime and corporate investigations, believes that San Francisco is at the center of organized retail crime. He brought up a state bust in the Bay Area from last year in which $8 million in stolen merchandise was confiscated from five suspects. The merchandise came from CVS, Target and Walgreens stores from all across San Francisco.
The lack of enforcement made shoplifters so nonchalant and casual they would often steal in broad daylight while awestruck customers documented the crime on their iPhones, allowing for some viral internet moments.
