Survey: Economic Nationalism Is Most Popular Policy Solution to Inflation

Economic nationalism, centered on reshoring manufacturing back to the United States, is the most popular policy solution to President Joe Biden’s record inflation, most likely voters say.

The survey was conducted by the left-wing Data for Progress think tank and looked at likely voters’ attitudes towards various messaging on inflation. The common thread, the survey found, is that economic nationalism was the top-rated policy solution by nearly every demographic group polled.

Among all likely voters, messaging about the “need to bring back manufacturing jobs in the U.S. to drive down prices” rated the highest while statements about “prices … going up because black and brown workers are being squeezed as corporations jack up profits” was rated the lowest.

“The most preferred message is Domestic manufacturing, with a utility score of more than twice the next two most preferred messages,” the analysis states:

The top two most preferred messages stress policy solutions to inflation. They emphasize that America should create domestic manufacturing jobs or that Democrats and Republicans have already taken bipartisan action to shore up the country’s supply chains. [Emphasis added]

Swing voters, Republicans, Hispanic voters, women voters, self-described moderates, and working class white Americans rated reshoring manufacturing back to the U.S. from foreign countries as the top messaging and policy solution for inflation.

Only black Americans and Democrats rated other policy priorities, like Biden’s “Build Back Better Act” and the recently-passed infrastructure package, above reshoring American manufacturing.

The survey also shows the disdain that Republicans, swing voters, and working class white Americans — a vital group to the GOP’s electoral coalition — continue to have for the business practices of corporate America. Among swing voters, for instance, messaging that blamed “record [corporate] profits while Americans are paying higher prices” resonated strongly.

Likewise, Republicans and working class white Americans listed tackling record corporate profits as one of the strongest cases to cutting inflation and lowering costs for American consumers.

As Breitbart News recently reported, businesses that make their products in the U.S. are seeing booming sales and record profits. Unlike offshored manufacturing and outsourced production, these businesses are avoiding all supply chain issues.

From 2001 to 2018, U.S. free trade with China has eliminated 3.7 million American jobs from the economy — 2.8 million of which were lost in American manufacturing. During that same period, at least 50,000 American manufacturing plants closed down.

The total U.S. goods trade deficit in 2020 hit a record $915.8 billion. Research shows that every $1 billion in imports from a foreign country to the U.S. leads to American job losses. Meanwhile, American manufacturing remains vital to the U.S. economy, as every one manufacturing job supports an additional 7.4 American jobs in other industries.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Investing $10M in Semiconductor Production to Combat U.S. Reliance on China

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced a nearly $10 million investment in semiconductor production for the state of Florida to combat the United States’ reliance on China and other foreign countries for vital supplies, parts, and materials.

On Wednesday, DeSantis announced the investment whereby millions from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund will go to Osceola County, Florida, and Valencia College to support semiconductor manufacturing.

DeSantis said the investment will support about 5,400 jobs in Florida, and Osceola County officials have suggested that tens of thousands of jobs will be supported by the investment once the infrastructure for the project is fully completed.

“Manufacturing is something that we need to do a better job of … semiconductors are a huge issue,” DeSantis said:

If you look at how the supply chain works, we are overly dependent on foreign nations, including Tawain which is a good ally of ours, but which is one that is under serious pressure from the Communist Party of China and so we have an opportunity to do more here in the United States and I think the more manufacturing of semiconductors here, the better off we’ll be. [Emphasis added]

DeSantis said the Chinese coronavirus crisis exposed “just how reliant we are on foreign supply chains, particularly supply chains coming out of China ,which is not our friend.” Specifically, on semiconductors, the U.S. has seen a massive shortage that has spurred car prices to skyrocket.

“The more that can be done here, in the United States and Florida, that gives more opportunities for people,” DeSantis said:

We need to start standing up as Floridians and Americans. We cannot be captive, key sectors of our economy should not be captive to some of these foreign nations, in particular, outfits like the Communist Party of China. Even when you have allies like Taiwan, how that could impact if there was a disruption there could throw a lot of this in the loop even more so than what we’ve seen in the last year and a half. So the more we have this capacity within our own country but particularly within our own state here in Florida, the more opportunities there are going to be here for people and the more secure both our economic supply chains will be and our national security. [Emphasis added]

Indeed, through the Chinese coronavirus crisis, the nation’s decades-long free trade policies with China and other foreign countries have left American consumers and industries in a whirlwind of supply chain issues, product shortages, and sky-high prices without any changes to quality.

From 2001 to 2018, U.S. free trade with China stripped nearly 340,000 American jobs out of the economy and sent most to foreign countries. In Florida, U.S. free trade with China has eliminated more than 150,000 jobs since 2001 — about 1.67 percent of all jobs in the state.

American manufacturing is vital to the U.S. economy, as every one manufacturing job supports an additional 7.4 American jobs in other industries.

China Declares Biden Administration Has ‘Failed in the First Year’

China’s state-run Global Times on Wednesday declared the Biden administration has “failed in the first year in office” in the battle against the Wuhan coronavirus, especially the recent omicron variant outbreak.

The Chinese Communist newspaper dismissed Biden’s plans to distribute 500 million at-home test kits and encourage vaccine booster shots as a “placebo-like” approach and “too little, too late.”

“You know there’s 330 million Americans right?!?!? Your number of tests seems awfully insufficient. Why wasn’t this sorted MONTHS ago?” a Chinese social media user shrieked at Biden, as quoted approvingly by the Global Times.

The point of the Global Times critique was to frighten the United States back into lockdowns, with subsequent complaints about America’s “dangerous” determination to hold family Christmas celebrations:

Yang Zhanqiu, a deputy director of the pathogen biology department at Wuhan University, told the Global Times that rapid tests can only detect patients. How to quarantine and treat patients, and how to prevent wide transmission, require comprehensive measures, such as the social measure of staying at home, rather than what Biden said regarding Christmas celebrations.

Lü Xiang, an expert of US studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Wednesday that Biden’s plans had no new measures and are just some comforting words.

Controlling an infectious disease requires strict measures in society, but even the president cannot follow the simple step of wearing a mask at public venues, Lü said.

The Global Times mixed in a grab bag of other unhappy facts about Biden’s first year, including his plummeting approval ratings and soaring U.S. inflation rates, to predict he is “likely to conclude his first year in office as the first U.S. president who so failed in the first year.”

China currently has about 13 million people under lockdown in the city of Xi’an to control a coronavirus surge, which is rather dramatic given the Chinese Communist Party claims to have almost completely eradicated the Chinese coronavirus over a year ago.

Supposedly, these immense lockdowns were triggered by a very small number of cases, including just seven omicron infections across the entire country. The Washington Post noted on Thursday that China locked down Dongxing, a city on the Vietnam border with a population of 200,000, because allegedly a single coronavirus infection was reported.

The Chinese Communist Party claims its ability to impose these draconian lockdowns on short notice demonstrates the superiority of its authoritarian system to messy, disobedient Western democracies.

However, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) posited China’s “zero Covid” lockdown-heavy approach is doing more damage to its economy than the regime wants to admit, as a growing number of factories report delayed shipments, reduced production, and complete shutdowns. Some Chinese border and port cities have reported significant economic contractions as a result.
