WATCH: L.A. City Council Democrat Kevin de León in Fight at Holiday Party
Los Angeles City Council member Kevin de León, formerly the president pro tempore of the California State Senate, engaged in fisticuffs with an activist at a holiday party Friday, shocking children and families present.
The incident, which took place at a Christmas tree lighting in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, was described by the Los Angeles Times:
The council member said in a statement that he was assaulted. Activists said De León was the aggressor.

A video posted on Twitter on Saturday by RootsAction shows activists walking alongside De León inside the event calling on him to resign while Jason Reedy, an organizer with the People’s City Council, stands in front of the councilman holding his phone in his face. When De León reaches a door, someone pushes Reedy out of the way.
The video shows De León going through the door into a back room and trying to close it. But Reedy follows him and the councilman appears to push him back. Reedy, holding his arms up, stands nose-to-nose with De León as others mob the pair. There’s a brief struggle, then De León grabs Reedy, throws him into a table and attempts to push him out of the room.
Local Fox affiliate KTTV-11 quoted dueling statements by de León and the activists. De León said:
Once we were able to push open a door and try to get out, Reedy launched a pelvic thrust, followed by a headbutt to my forehead. My response, in defense of myself, was to push him off of me. In the ensuing struggle, Reedy struck me in the face with a closed fist, violently elbowed a female staff member, and injured a volunteer in front of horrified parents and children.
The escalating political rhetoric is beyond unacceptable, now turning verbal threats into physical acts of violence. It’s a dangerous pattern that must end before more serious harm or loss of life occurs. Leaders must collectively step up to curb rising hostilities towards staff and elected officials. In no way is violence a form of free speech and acts like these have no place in politics or democracy.
Reedy’s attorney said:
Kevin de León and his supporters assaulted Mr. Reedy for voicing criticism of Kevin de León at a public event, echoing the widespread demands for him to resign. De León’s supporters initiated physical contact by shoving him, and De León himself grabbed Mr. Reedy. Mr. Reedy had his hands up and did not initiate physical contact with anyone. Mr. Reedy has reported the assault to LAPD.
Attendees at the event, including children, were widely reported to have been shocked by the violent encounter.
De León, once a rising political star who aspired to statewide office and recently ran for L.A. mayor, has faced calls for his resignation since audio emerged of a racist conversation in which he and other local Democratic leaders joined a local labor leader in disparaging various ethnic groups around the city.

The LA City Council Debacle is not just about Racism
When those who publicly espouse woke identity politics are shown to be racists of the first order one can be forgiven a bit of schadenfreude.
Of the four involved in the now infamous LA Council meeting, two -- Council President Nury Martinez and labor leader Ron Herrera have resigned, the other two -- councilmembers Kevin deLeon and Gil Cedillo have not, though Cedillo is already on his way out at the end of the year after losing his seat in the June primary.
A number of pundits have argued that “cancelling” people because of what they said in a private conversation is exactly what the woke do. Since we all know what lying corrupt dirtbags politicians are, why should the public be surprised at this sort of thing?
In this case, though, that argument is absolutely wrong because context matters:
The recording was of a meeting regarding the re-districting of city council seats, one of the most important things electeds do -- essentially picking who can vote for whom. The centrality of this point cannot be disregarded -- this was not some random “a few too many cocktails at a fundraiser” gossip or some bad joke told in passing six years ago; this was them doing their job.
However, it cannot be emphasized enough that this situation is about far more than race, as it has pulled back the curtain and shown the public how LA (and much of government everywhere) actually operates.
· Woke Language -- Since all four of the participants are Hispanic and are by definition oppressed, the Left has been trying to sell the idea that systemic racism goes beyond “white supremacy” and really should be reclassified as “light supremacy.” Just when you thought the linguistic gymnastics could not get any more absurd… at least it rhymes, so that’s a plus
· Union Corruption -- Herrera was the president of the Los Angeles Federation of Labor, which often spouts identity nonsense. Of course, anyone without a very specific political axe to grind already knew too many unions care more about political power and perks than their members, let alone the people they serve. But, like the appalling actions of teachers unions across the country during COVID, this episode truly rips the mask off for everyone except the willfully blind to see.
· 
Ethnic Politics -- The thrust of the meeting was how the city could be chopped up to increase the number of Latinos on the council and that that increase should/could come about by the reduction of the number of “black” council seats (48 percent of the city is Hispanic and -- pre-Nury resignation -- there were four Hispanic members while 9 percent of the city is Black and there are three black members). This effort to tweak the districts shows no concern about properly representing and/or doing good by your community but merely using them as demographic pawns to increase personal power.
· What Politicians Focus On -- Three city council members and one of the most important unelected official in the city get together and what did they talk about? Solving homelessness? Battling crime? Improving constituent services? Nope -- it was all about how to increase their personal power and make the union happy (I was an elected for some time and was never privy to any such discussions and actually made sure to schedule an extra 20 minutes every time I went to the grocery store to ensure I had enough time to get complained and/or suggested at while I was trying to figure out what flavor of yogurt to buy. I was also only offered one bribe, which was either heartening because people knew I wouldn’t take it or sort of depressing because no one thought I was important enough to bother trying to bribe.)
· Comfortable Corruption -- Los Angeles city government is a cesspool of corruption, to the point that one needs a literal cheat sheet to keep the cases straight. Throw in Mayor Eric Garcetti’s ambassadorial derailment and you have a city that has gone out of control. Yet one of the most fascinating aspects of the recording is how utterly comfortable all four were with what was occurring. Clearly, this was not the only time they did things like this. As they had never been caught before and the fact that it would never even occur to the Los Angeles Times or other local media to investigate “people of color” they didn’t have to worry… they thought.
And the final fallout from the farce is not finished, as another group of power-hungry Angelenos -- the Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America - is prepared to pounce on the politically putrid remains.
The DSA already has one of its members on the council, got another one (yet-to-be-seated) in the June primary (taking Cedillo’s seat) and saw, overall, five of the nine candidates it endorsed win.
And while it is unknown who leaked the recording, it is known that the meeting took place at union headquarters and that a current DSA-backed candidate is a labor organizer.
The leak opens up Nury’s seat for a special election, possibly will open up de Leon’s and hurts the campaign for city controller of current councilman Paul Koretz, who is locked in a tight battle with another DSA-backed candidate. In other words, the DSA could emerge as one of the big political winners of situation.
What that could mean is anyone’s guess, but a shift from the current union/developer/entertainment industry/greasy non-profit/identity hustler cabal that runs the city to a city run by people who truly believe that the United States and capitalism and law enforcement and self-governance are inherently evil is a change that boggles the mind.
The city is beyond the frying pan or fire question and swiftly approaching toilet bowl territory, but we may get a bit of inkling if the people of Los Angeles are capable of pulling back from the brink when they vote for a new mayor on November 8.
If it’s Rick Caruso, there is a glimmer of hope yet for the City of Angels.
If it’s Karen Bass, the sewage-soaked slip and slide ride of the past decade or so will just be the beginning.

Tillis: Bipartisan Immigration Deal Will Seal the Border, Provide ‘Path to Citizenship’ for DREAMers
Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) said Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom” that his bipartisan immigration deal crafted with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) will boost security at the border while providing a pathway to citizenship for the DREAMers.
Anchor Dana Perino asked, “You are working on some legislation. What do you want to accomplish?”
Tillis said, “We want to seal the border. We want to prevent 2 million crossings every year – with Title 42 going away, potentially many more than that. We want to protect our border patrol agents. We lost one this week trying to go after some of the people you just described. They are evading border patrol. They are not presenting themselves for asylum and trying to get to this country to continue the expansion of the cartel’s illegal actions. We want to reduce Fentanyl coming across the border and secure the border. And we want to make sure that the crisis at the border, that the president has to understand exists, has to be solved.”
He added, “The 800 million a year that the cartels are making for human trafficking is aiding and abetting the flood of Fentanyl to this country. I think that when we’re talking about what we’re talking about proposing here is simply looking at a small portion of the population that even President Trump supported as a path to citizenship. Here is what they have to do. They have to be in school. They have to be gainfully employed. They can be in the military. They can’t have a criminal record and never have been on any sort of federal assistance. These are people that came to this country as minors who are now doctors, scientists, teachers, hundreds serving in the military. I think the American people understand this is very different than this concept of amnesty. This will give them a path, and it is not automatic. They will have to work and maintain those high standards. And for that, we get a closed border, and we shut down the cartels. That seems to me like something worth working on.”

Scandal-Plagued Texas Dem Received Donation From Family Tied to the ‘Most Dangerous Cartel Operating in Mexico’
Democratic Texas congressman Henry Cuellar and his brother, a Texas sheriff, received thousands of dollars from a family with close ties to Mexico's "notoriously brutal" Los Zetas cartel, National Review reported Monday.
Cuellar, who is facing a tough reelection race this year, in 2006 received $1,000 from the then-wife of Antonio Peña Arguelles, a money launderer for Los Zetas, which U.S. officials have called "the most technologically advanced, sophisticated, and dangerous cartel operating in Mexico." Peña Arguelles, who in 2014 was sentenced to more than two years in U.S. federal prison, himself donated $1,500 to Cuellar’s brother, Webb County sheriff Martin Cuellar (D.).
While the San Antonio Express-News at the time reported on the donations, the story "never garnered national attention and largely disappeared" after Henry Cuellar reportedly gave the money to charity, National Review noted.
The National Review report comes as the United States faces an unprecedented migrant crisis, with two million illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border since last October. The Biden administration has faced widespread criticism, including from Cuellar, for its handling of the crisis.
It also comes as Cuellar faces corruption allegations, with the FBI in January raiding his home and campaign office. The multiple scandals have added up to the congressman's toughest reelection fight since he first took office in 2005.
"Cuellar's strange donation link to an alleged conduit for one of the largest and most violent cartels in the region could be a liability," National Review noted:
Cartels leave a heavy footprint in the Rio Grande Valley, and a large segment of the region's economy is linked to Border Patrol jobs. Notably, the National Border Patrol Council—the labor union representing some 18,000 Border Patrol agents—opted to endorse Cuellar's Republican challenger, Cassy Garcia, over the Democratic incumbent this year, despite having routinely endorsed Cuellar in past elections.
Cuellar's campaign told National Review after publication that "resurfacing this 10-year-old story is a blatant smear attempt" and insisted that Cuellar "had no knowledge" of the Peña Arguelles family's background.
