Campaign donors to New York City mayor Eric Adams (D.) plotted in 2020 and 2021 to provide Adams with illegal donations and receive perks from City Hall, according to indictments that Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg (D.) announced on Friday.

Bragg is prosecuting a group of defendants who allegedly came up with a "very organized" scheme to "circumvent campaign finance laws to deliver more money to the Adams campaign" than allowed by law, Politico reported. In an arrangement known as a straw-donor scheme, the defendants allegedly paid other people for donating to the Adams campaign.

The goal was "to use the illicitly obtained haul to seek favorable treatment from City Hall once Adams was elected," according to Politico.

An indictment over a straw-donor scheme brought down a top New York Democrat just last year. Former New York lieutenant governor Brian Benjamin resigned in April 2022 after he was arrested for taking straw donations. While a judge ultimately dismissed the most serious charges, Benjamin still faces two counts of falsifying records.

Although Bragg's office has not charged the mayor's campaign, Adams "appeared to be aware of" at least one of the schemers' fundraisers, Politico reported. Leading up to the fundraisers, one defendant allegedly "approached donors and shared information about getting around contribution limits by using the straw-donor scheme," Bragg's announcement says.

Adams is facing a tough week. The New York Times on Thursday reported that the mayor manipulated a Google printout of a murdered police officer so that he could claim he'd kept the photo in his wallet for decades.

‘Squeezed from Every Direction’: NYPD Cops Continue Leaving Force in Droves

More of New York City’s police officers are reportedly rushing for the exit as crime plagues their communities.

The news comes on the heels of former New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Keechant Sewell’s resignation, even though she would not say why she handed in her notice, NBC New York reported on June 14.

Meanwhile, a New York Post article published Saturday cited data regarding the officer exodus, stating that “Through June 30, 648 officers quit before retiring this year — a 22% spike from 2021, when 530 left, and an 87% rise from 2020, when 347 quit, NYPD pension data show.”

The decision to quit, along with NYPD’s recruiting issues, reportedly means the 34,000 officers are lacking over 1,000.

“Cops are being squeezed from every direction. They are working inhumane amounts of forced overtime. The brass is pushing for more enforcement, while the police-oversight complex is pushing to ruin more cops’ careers,” Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry noted.

He said many officers cannot afford the risk because they are not being paid enough, and the NYPD needs to be more accommodating to those it already employs.

Officers usually stay on the job for 20 years to collect a pension, and the Post cited data that reportedly shows officers are burning through their accrued days off before quitting.

Hostility towards police officers, bail reform, and the crime wave have fueled the frustration among the police agency, the outlet said.

“The latest Finest exodus has been sparked by the ‘continued piling on’ by the City Council and police watchdogs, insiders told The Post,” it added.

Meanwhile, New York City police officers reportedly suffered 32 percent more injuries so far in 2023 than in 2022 as rampant crime bears down on their communities.

In March, one New Yorker told Fox 5 New York the crime was “getting worse.”

“It’s unbelievable. You can’t even go out to the street,” she added:

Another resident said, “Crime has increased a lot. Right now, it’s like we’re scared to get on the trains if something might happen because somebody has a gun, somebody has a knife, you sit by the door somebody could get you, slice you in your face.”

A security guard for a CVS store in Manhattan is facing murder charges for allegedly stabbing a serial shoplifter to death on Thursday, according to police.

The incident occurred just after midnight at the chain’s Times Square location on Broadway and 49th Street, NBC New York reported.

The security guard, Scott Enoe, reportedly tried to stop the man from stealing from the store. The men then fought, and Enoe allegedly ended up stabbing the man, according to police.

“Sources said Enoe tried to stop the would-be thief from stealing Gatorade and a container of creamer,” the report states.

Enoe’s mother told the Daily News the man who died started the fight, and her son was acting in self-defense.

“The guy came in and started arguing with Scotty. Next thing you know, Scotty was on the ground. He acted in self-defense,” Lucille Enoe told the outlet. “When the guy threw him down and started beating him up, Scotty stabbed him.”

Law enforcement sources said the accused shoplifter, who has not yet been named by officials, had been arrested 18 times in 2023 alone for petit larceny and burglary.

Street vendor Modo Gui, who witnessed the incident, told the Daily News the man who died “was a homeless guy.”

“He had a big problem with the security guard, with the CVS,” Gui said.

Enoe, a Brooklyn resident, is facing charges of murder and weapons possession.

“The stabbing comes as shoplifting in this part of Manhattan continues to be a problem. Petit larceny is up more than 14 percent this year over 2022, and more than 50 percent compared to the same period in 2021,” according to the report.
