The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) will host an “All Out for Palestine” rally in New York’s Times Square on Sunday, gathering in the wake of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel that has claimed more than 500 lives and left several thousand more injured.

The New York Post reports via an op-ed attributed to its Editorial Board that DSA supporters are urged to, “Wear a mask so you’re not recognized” while being told, “Best to just let the swastikas do the talking.”

“Never mind the hundreds of Israeli civilians and children who have been murdered, wounded, abducted, and terrorized. Their lives mean nothing to the DSA. Nothing,” Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) wrote in response Saturday.

“The NYC-DSA is revealing itself for what it truly is: an antisemitic stain on the soul of America’s largest city.”

The NY Post item details the DSA as the party of Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, Rashida Talib — and New York’s own Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal “Fire Alarm” Bowman.

For her part, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO has issued a statement on the violence in Israel, taking to social media calling for an to “U.S. government support for Israeli military occupation and apartheid” while professing sympathy for the dead of injured.

Bush draws moral equivalency between Hamas terrorists and Israeli military, mourns deaths caused by “bombardment” of Gaza, before further condemning Israel’s “military occupation” and claims “apartheid.”

The NY Post editorial further sets out the reasons why the Biden administration should do its utmost to support the Jewish state in its hour of need, declaring:

This is a clarifying moment for America, which needs to stand as Israel’s unwavering ally. These are monsters, and the people who support them are despicable. To President Biden: Stop playing footsie with the Ayatollah and stand up against Iran’s warmongering. To Democrats: Denounce the representatives giving aid and comfort to murderers and kidnappers.

It ends with a simple exhortation, “And to New Yorkers: Come to Times Square on Sunday at 1 p.m. Hold up Israeli flags. Shout down the DSA. Show that hate will not be tolerated.”

Nolte: Democrats Tolerate Those Who Celebrate Savagery Against Jewish Children

Let’s say that Hamas was fighting a war against Israel, and by “war,” I mean a war-war, not a terrorist campaign. On one side, you would have Israel defending its territory. On the other, you would have Hamas looking to conquer Israel. Both sides are in uniform. Both sides are focused on wiping out the other’s capacity to make war.

Make no mistake about my allegiance. Even in that case, I would want Israel to salt the earth with the grinded-up bones of every Hamas fighter, but… In that case, I would find Western supporters of Hamas a little more tolerable.

Maybe they sincerely believe the anti-Israeli lies told over the decades, the antisemitic propaganda about “colonialism” and “Palestinians” not being a race manufactured out of thin air to aid in the destruction of the Jews.

What I mean is that, in that case, I could give those we see celebrating Hamas in GermanyLondonAmericaCanada, and elsewhere the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they just don’t know. Maybe they have fallen for the Christiane Amanpour-ing of Israel. Maybe they sincerely believe Israel is a brutal occupation force and that Hamas is fighting the righteous fight of the occupied.

Well, this isn’t that.

This isn’t even close to that.

That’s not what these monsters who live among us in the West are cheering.

No, they are cheering — openly cheering — the kidnapping, torture, rape, and murder of girls, women, and old women. They are championing — openly championing — the cold-blooded slaughter of children, families, and the elderly. They are siding with —openly siding with — those using social media to celebrate the mutilation of raped, tortured, and murdered corpses.

Whether every video of the savages committing this slaughter is verified or accurate is not the point. The point is what those celebrating this attack on Israel believe, what those who paraded and cheered for Hamas in New York’s Times Square Saturday believe, and what they believe is that they are celebrating is the rape and murder of old women and the slaughter of children.

Do you understand who lives among us: those who openly celebrate the murder and rape of innocents, of children, of old women and young girls… Among us are those who watched the same social media videos we have all watched and then took to the streets to express their support.

Palestinians celebrate their return after crossing the border fence with Israel from Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. Barrages of rockets were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip at dawn. (SAID KHATIB/AFP via Getty Images)

Just as horrifying, just as morally obscene are those who tolerate those who celebrate savagery. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) deliberately released a cryptic statement meant to show support for Hamas.

“I have been in touch with communities impacted by what’s happening in the region. It is abhorrent. My heart is with all those impacted. We need peace in this region,” Whitmer wrote.

Yes, the poor, victimized “region.”

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) condemned the slaughter of innocents but then — if you read between the lines —demanded there be no justice or consequence for that slaughter by calling for a ceasefire. Only a fool can’t see through that.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has expressed her tolerance of this horror through 24 hours of radio silence, even as her fellow New Yorkers took to Times Square to celebrate open, medieval savagery.

Not a peep from Barack Obama.

Not a peep from Hillary Clinton.

We are watching unspeakable horrors, and America’s chief virtue signalers are either silent or dog-whistling their tolerance of those horrors.

Let me put it this way…

Will Democrats treat those who tolerate those who slaughter old women and children with even a speck of the contempt they hold for Trump supporters? Will Democrats call for the closing of bank accounts? Will the Democrats who run social media censor them? Will the Democrats who run the Deep State seek to frame them so they can be held without bail? Will the Democrats who run the corporate media make them famous, doxx them, or visit their homes with a camera crew? Will Democrats call for them to be deprogrammed?

If you’re looking for some cosmic answer as to what to do about this, I’m not your guy. All I know is that We the People elected these neo-Nazis, We the People, will re-elect them, and We the People are the problem.

Nothing can be done about that. No one can save the world. You can only lose what you do have by wasting your life driven by the narcissism of trying. What you can do is take advantage of America’s vastness and move your family out of the Democrat-run cities plagued with those who tolerate those who openly celebrate the rape and murder of children and old people.

What you can do is what you can do…

There’s still plenty of America to escape to. I fear this won’t last forever… But for right now, at least, that one option remains available.

CAIR, SJP, American Muslim Groups Back Palestinians After Terror Attack in Israel

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and a variety of other Muslim and pro-Palestinian groups in the United States failed to condemn the Hamas terror attack on Israel on Saturday, and instead offered their support.

In a statement, CAIR expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, and did not condemn violence against Israel. Over 300 Israelis were murdered, and over 1,500 wounded, in an unprecedented terror attack on civilian targets.

CAIR called for “maximum pressure on Israel” and added: “Furthermore, we urge Arab and Muslim countries that have normalized relations with Israel to reconsider their approach.”

As Breitbart news has noted:

In 2007-8, CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the terror financing trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. That case, in turn, led the FBI to discontinue its work with the organization. In 2009, a federal judge ruled that the government “produced ample evidence to establish” the ties of CAIR with Hamas, the Palestinian terror organization. The United Arab Emirates labeled CAIR a terrorist organization in 2014 (a decision that the Obama administration opposed).

Other Muslim organizations and pro-Palestinian groups took similar stances. The Times of Israel reported:

Pro-Palestinian, student and Muslim activist groups in the US backed Hamas’s terror offensive against Israel and condemned the Jewish state on Saturday, after terrorists from Gaza murdered hundreds of Israelis, sowing havoc across much of the country and prompting retaliatory IDF strikes.

The US Council of Muslim Organizations, an umbrella group, said, “The recent unprovoked and continuous attacks by Israel on Palestinian towns, cities, and refugee camps have resulted in tragic loss of Palestinian lives.”

The national chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine [SJP], the leading pro-Palestinian college group, said, “Callous oppressors only know the language of destruction.”

Notably, President Joe Biden’s White House consulted CAIR in crafting its new strategy on antisemitism, which protected extreme anti-Israel criticism. CAIR is also close to many Democrats.

How Biden Helped Fund Hamas’s Allies Before Unprecedented Israel Attack

Entities known to maintain friendly ties to the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, from the Iranian Islamist regime to Venezuelan socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro, have enjoyed years of financial benefits from eased sanctions under leftist President Joe Biden – benefits meriting closer scrutiny in light of the unprecedented wave of terrorism striking Israel on Saturday.

Israeli authorities estimate that over 300 people have died and identified nearly 1,600 wounded in the past 24 hours as a result of thousands of rocket bombings and waves of street attacks against civilians. Reports indicate that Hamas terrorists took an unknown number of Israeli civilians – estimated to total in the dozens and include women, children, and elderly people with dementia – hostage. Terrorists have flooded social media with graphic videos appearing to show the torture of hostages.

Hamas has branded the terror spree the “al-Aqsa Deluge” and vowed that the attacks would continue indefinitely.

The Palestinian terror attack happened on the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret, the final day of the annual High Holy Day cycle.

The attacks followed years of Biden administration policies aiding supporters of Palestinian terrorism. Most recently, in September, a report revealed that the State Department granted over $90,000 in funding to the Phoenix Center for Research and Field Studies in Gaza, a “non-governmental” group that describes itself as supporting “armed resistance” against Israel.

Less directly, but perhaps more influentially, the Biden administration has aided some of Hamas’s most high-profile international supporters.

While a Sunni Arab organization, Hamas has long maintained close ties to the Shiite regime in Iran. After a brief chill in relations during the early years of the Syrian Civil War, the Islamic regime and the terrorist organization restored their association to the point that the head of Hamas identified Tehran as its “largest backer financially and militarily.” Military experts studying drones used during the attack on Saturday suggested that they were at least inspired by Iranian designs, if not outright Iranian-made weapons.

The “supreme leader” of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, celebrated the carnage on his Twitter account on Saturday, writing, “God willing, the cancer of the usurper Zionist regime will be eradicated at the hands of the Palestinian people.”

Appeasement policies towards Iran have been a cornerstone of the Biden administration’s approach to the Middle East. Tehran most recently received word that the White House would move to allow it to access $6 billion in assets frozen as part of sanctions on the country for its funding of terrorist activity. Biden reportedly traded the $6 billion for the release of five Americans held hostage in Iranian prisons. The United States reportedly facilitated the unfreezing of the $6 billion, held in South Korea, and the transfer of the money to Iranian ally Qatar before the Americans were freed.

“This is not a ransom,” White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby insisted in August, before reports citing Biden administration officials confirmed the agreement on September 11.

Khamenei marked the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, jihadist attacks with a speech celebrating the demise of the United States.

“The main lines of this transformation are several things: First of all, the weakening of the world’s arrogant powers,” Khamenei said. “They themselves say that the indicators of American power in the world like economy are declining. One of the most important indicators of American power was the strong American economy; they say it is declining.”

“Hamas is being funded and equipped by Tehran … which the U.S. has been appeasing and enabling in recent months, as billions of dollars have flowed into the regime’s coffers,” Jake Wallis Simons, editor of the Jewish Chronicle observed this weekend.

The $6 billion gift bookends a policy that began early in the Biden administration. In June 2021, Biden lifted sanctions on three former Iranian officials and two companies sanctioned for engaging the Iranian oil industry, on the grounds that the targeted entities had allegedly made a “verified change in behavior or status.”

One of Biden’s first acts in office – in February 2021 – was the removal of one of Iran’s closest terrorist allies in the region, the Yemeni Houthi movement, from the American government’s list of designated foreign terrorist organizations. The Houthis, also known as Ansarallah, have engaged in a bloody civil war in Yemen for nearly a decade under their slogan, “Allah is great, death to the United States, death to Israel, curse the Jews, victory for Islam.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken plainly stated that the revocation of the terror designation was not as a result of the Houthis ceasing to engage in terrorist activity. Rather, the objective of lifting the sanctions was to allow money to flow into Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, allegedly.

“By focusing on alleviating the humanitarian situation in Yemen, we hope the Yemeni parties can also focus on engaging in dialogue,” Blinken said at the time.

Rather than “focus on engaging in dialogue,” the Houthis expanded their terrorist activities into Saudi Arabia.

While a Shiite terrorist group, the Houthis and the leaders of Hamas have publicly expressed solidarity with each other’s causes, even in the face of criticism from their supporters.

Across the globe, in Venezuela, the Biden administration has also worked to ease sanctions on the socialist regime’s oil industry, despite a documented, long-term relationship between dictator Nicolás Maduro and terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The largest windfall to Venezuela came in the form of the Biden administration allowing the American company Chevron to begin “limited” oil production in the country, which requires cooperation with Maduro’s state oil corporation, Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA)

.

Oil production, which cratered after decades of socialist mismanagement of PDVSA facilities and sanctions on the oil industry, has skyrocketed since November in the country. Venezuela jointly announced with the dictatorships of Iran and Syria last week that all three would soon collaborate on the construction of an oil refinery in Homs, a hollowed-out former opposition stronghold during the Syrian Civil War. All three will profit from the completed operation.

The three countries had initially announced an interest in building such a refinery in Homs in 2017, but did not follow up on the plan after President Donald Trump imposed heavy sanctions on both Iran and Venezuela.

Iran and Venezuela have been close allies since the tenure of late dictator Hugo Chávez. Then a foreign minister, Maduro reportedly first met with the head of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, in 2007, to cut a deal on allegedly aiding the jihadists in procuring weapons, profiting from drug trafficking, and receiving passports. In 2020, the U.S. government charged a close associate of Maduro’s, Adel El Zabayar, with engaging in narco-terrorism through the attempted sale of cocaine in America to fund Hezbollah and Hamas.

Nolte: Joe Biden Blamed for ‘Funding’ Attack on Israel by Paying Iran $6B

His Fraudulency Joe Biden is facing justifiable fury over his likely role in the appalling attack on Israel that began Saturday.

As Newsweek reported:

Canadian journalist Daniel Boardman wrote on X that, after Biden allowed the money to be released to Iran, “now Hamas, one of the terrorist proxies they brag openly about funding, is launching a sophisticated and expensive attack on Israel. Foreign Policy matters.”

Bryan E. Leib, executive director of the group CASEPAC (Combating Antisemitism Everywhere!), wrote that “the carnage that’s unfolding in #Israel right now is a direct result of what happens when Joe Biden emboldens Iran. #Hamas would not be able to be operate if not for the $$ from Tehran.”

Right-wing broadcaster Mark Levin criticized Biden’s “appeasement of the Palestinian terrorists,” adding that the transfer of $6 billion “to the Iranian terror state, which arms these terrorists, contributed to this.”

Jake Wallis Simons, editor of the Jewish Chronicle, added, “Hamas is being funded and equipped by Tehran… which the US has been appeasing and enabling in recent months, as billions of dollars have flowed into the regime’s coffers.”

Republican Florida governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis also weighed in, saying, “Israel is now under attack by Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists. Iran has helped fund this war against Israel, and Joe Biden’s policies that have gone easy on Iran have helped fill their coffers.”

The following logic is not difficult to comprehend…

The terrorist state of Iran kidnaps five Americans. Biden then chooses the anniversary of September 11, 2023, to pay the terrorist state of Iran a ransom of $6 billion. This ransom payment comes in the form of releasing $6 billion in assets seized from Iran. So, Iran now has $6 billion it didn’t have before, and Iran funds Hamas. And now, less than four weeks after Joe Biden paid that $6 billion, Hamas is flush with enough resources to launch an unprecedented attack on Israel.

This would be like President Franklin D. Roosevelt handing the 1939 equivalent of $6 billion to Hitler three weeks before Hitler invaded Poland.

More:

The militant Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip have carried out an unprecedented, multi-front attack on Israel, firing thousands of rockets as dozens of Hamas fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations and catching the country off-guard on a major holiday. Israel says at least 40 people have died.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Israel was “at war” and called for a mass mobilization of army reserves. The invasion revived memories of the 1973 war practically 50 years to the day.

And that’s not even the worst of it. Social media is alive with videos that purport to show Hamas terrorists murdering and kidnapping Israeli civilians. This is a horror show that will likely make 1973 look like a skirmish.

The corporate media is already doing what it always does when Israel is attacked: blame Israel and protect Democrats, specifically Biden, by framing every criticism as “Republicans pounce.”

Somehow, the media will blame former President Donald Trump, even though, under his administration, peace was breaking out all over the Middle East.

Pray for Israel.

Presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) in an exclusive interview with SiriusXM Breitbart News Daily blasted the Biden administration for paying $6 billion in ransom to Iran and enabling a main sponsor of Hamas, which launched a major terrorist attack against Israel on Saturday.

“When you see weakness in the Biden administration, you should expect aggression around the globe,” Scott told host and Washington Bureau chief Matthew Boyle.

“One of the things that we have been questioning about this administration is do they stand shoulder to shoulder, back to back with our allies, and the bottom line is when you pay $6 billion ransom to Iran, who funds Hamas, we should not be surprised,” he said.

“The people that pay the most immediate price are our allies in Israel. Five thousand rockets. Five thousand rockets shot at a nation the size of New Jersey. Devastating. We should be strong in our reaction, strong with our support, and clear on the malignancy of the Biden administration that’s spreading even into our ally’s territory,” he added.

Scott said that while the $6 billion that the Biden administration unfroze for Iran in exchange for the release of five Americans who were detained in Iran is not yet available, it still sent a signal to Iran that they would have it available soon.

The United States and Iran reportedly exchanged prisoners on Monday, largely completing a deal that also included President Joe Biden unfreezing $6 billion in Iranian assets that have been held in South Korean banks since former President Donald Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.

The United States and Iran reportedly exchanged prisoners on Monday, largely completing a deal that also included President Joe Biden unfreezing $6 billion in Iranian assets that have been held in South Korean banks since former President Donald Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.

“The $6 billion has not been accessed completely by Iran yet, but the fact of the matter is if you have a credit on your account for $6 billion, typically, people count that as access available today, tomorrow, whenever, so you start reworking your spending budget,” he said.

“And by doing so, you put yourself in a position to use that money even though you have not had access to it yet. So the $6 billion that they know they’re getting, they’re using already,” he said.

He said despite the Biden administration saying the ransom money could only be used towards humanitarian purposes, money is “fungible,” and Iran has already expressed it would use the money however it desired.

“That is clear. The way they want to is in funding terrorism against American allies,” Scott said.

Joe Biden Israel

Israeli Amb.: ‘This Is our 9/11’ and We Will ‘Change the Equation’ of Gaza as a ‘War Machine’ — ‘Never Again Is Today’

On Saturday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Fox News Live,” Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Gilad Erdan said the Hamas attack on Israel that happened on the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret, the final day of the annual High Holy Day cycle, “is our 9/11” and “we said, since the Holocaust, where Jews were butchered and massacred, never again. And never again is today,” Erdan also argued that when Israel withdrew from Gaza, Hamas turned the Gaza Strip into “a war machine. We cannot allow this situation of Gaza as a war machine to continue. And we are committed, starting from today, to change the equation. We won’t have another 9/11.”

Erdan stated that while he won’t share military plans publicly, “[F]rom now on, we are committed to [using] every means at our disposal to restore our deterrence, and to exact from these animals a heavy price.” And “All options today are on the table. … This is our 9/11. We are committed to [changing] the equation, to shatter the old paradigm. These animals will pay a heavy price. And they will learn that these atrocities cannot be committed again against our civilians.”

He added, “[F]or many years we lived side-by-side with Gaza. We believe that it’s possible, even though, and I hope your viewers know that Hamas is a genocidal, jihadist, Islamist organization that is fully committed only to the annihilation of the State of Israel. They don’t want to compromise. They don’t want a dialogue. They don’t want to see the existence of the Jewish state. So, when we evacuated, when we withdrew from Gaza 17, 18 years ago, they took power. And since then, they use[d], exploit[ed] every square inch in the Gaza Strip. And they turned, basically, the Gaza Strip into a war machine. We cannot allow this situation of Gaza as a war machine to continue. And we are committed, starting from today, to change the equation. We won’t have another 9/11. And as we said, since the Holocaust, where Jews were butchered and massacred, never again. And never again is today, Eric, for us.”

Hamas militant group has started a war that ‘Israel will win,’ defense minister says

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s defense minister announced that the Hamas militant group has started a war against Israel and pledged that “Israel will win.”

Following a security cabinet meeting at the Israeli military headquarters in Tel Aviv, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that Hamas “made a grave mistake” in launching barrages of rockets into southern and central Israel in its surprise morning attack.

In one of the most serious escalations in years between Israel and the militant group that rules Gaza, Hamas gunmen crossed the border fence at several places and infiltrated Israeli communities.

“The state of Israel will win this war,” Gallant said.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

The Times of Israel reports:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gives his first public statement on the massive attack by the Hamas terror group, saying the country is at war.

“Citizens of Israel, we are at war,” he says. “And we will win.”

“The enemy will pay a price like they have never known before,” he says, in his first public statement on the matter, some five hours since the start of the assault by the Gaza-based terror group.

There are reports of a number of dead and nearly 300 wounded as terrorists infiltrate a number of southern towns and thousands of rockets are fired at the center and south of the country.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip carried out an unprecedented infiltration Saturday into southern Israel, sending fighters across the border and firing thousands of rockets into the country as the ruling Hamas militant group announced the beginning of a new operation.

The Israeli military put the country on war alert and began striking targets in Gaza in response, setting the stage for what was likely to be a new heavy round of fighting between the bitter enemies. In a serious escalation, salvos of rockets fired from Gaza set off constant air raid sirens as far north as Jerusalem.

Videos posted on social media showed what appeared to be uniformed Palestinian gunmen inside the Israeli border town of Sderot.

A video from Gaza showed what looked like the lifeless body of an Israeli soldier being trampled by an angry crowd of Palestinians shouting “God is Great.” Other footage appeared to show Palestinian militants dragging away an Israeli soldier, still alive, on a motorcycle and Palestinian men dancing atop an Israeli tank that had been set ablaze. The authenticity of the videos could not immediately be verified.

The elusive leader of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammed Deif, announced the beginning of what he called “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm.”

“Today the people are regaining their revolution,” he said in the recorded message, as he called on Palestinians from east Jerusalem to northern Israel to join the fight and “expel the occupiers and demolish the walls.”

“We must set the earth on fire under the feet of the occupiers,” he said, claiming that Hamas had fired over 5,000 rockets into Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ‘s office said he’d convene his security cabinet for urgent discussions.

The escalation comes at a delicate time for his far-right government, as protests against the government’s deeply divisive plan to overhaul the judiciary have spread even within the ranks of the military.

Hundreds of soldiers in the military reserves have either pulled out of training sessions or said they won’t report for duty over the judicial changes, threatening to undermine Netanyahu’s reputation as a security expert and raising fears about the effects on the operational readiness of Israel’s armed forces.

Salah Arouri, an exiled Hamas leader, said the operation was a response “to the crimes of the occupation.” He said fighters were defending the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and the thousands of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

The operation, coming on the major Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, caught Israel off-guard, raising memories of the 1973 war in which Israel’s enemies launched a surprise attack on Yom Kippur.

The Israeli military confirmed Saturday that an infiltration had occurred in several locations near the Gaza border in southern Israel. It ordered residents to remain indoors.

“In the last hour, the Hamas terrorist organization had begun a massive shooting of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, and terrorists infiltrated into Israeli territory in a number of different locations,” it said.

Cities and towns in southern Israel emptied as the military closed roads near Gaza and millions of Israelis scrambled to bombs shelters while air raid sirens wailed overhead. In the kibbutz of Nahal Oz, just 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Gaza Strip, terrified residents who were huddled indoors said they could hear constant gunfire echoing off the buildings.

“We are in a state of war,” said Kobi Shabtai, the Israeli police chief. “There is no other explanation.”

The army said residents next to Gaza should stay in their homes due to the infiltration.

“With rockets we somehow feel safer, knowing that we have the Iron Dome (missile defense system) and our safe rooms. But knowing that terrorists are walking around communities is a different kind of fear,” said Mirjam Reijnen, a 42-year-old volunteer firefighter in Nahal Oz, adding that she and her three kids have been too scared to leave the shelter even for a moment to use the bathroom.

Israel has built a massive fence along the Gaza border meant to prevent infiltrations. It goes deep underground and is equipped with cameras, high-tech sensors and sensitive listening technology. The infiltration marked a major accomplishment — and escalation — by Hamas.

The sound of outgoing rockets whooshing through the air could be heard in Gaza and sirens wailed in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem during an early morning barrage that lasted for over two hours. Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue agency said a 70-year-old woman was critically injured when a rocket hit a building in southern Israel. Elsewhere, a 20-year-old man was moderately injured by rocket shrapnel, it said.

The launches came after weeks of heightened tensions along Israel’s volatile border with Gaza, and heavy fighting in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Israel has maintained a blockade over Gaza since Hamas, an Islamic militant group that opposes Israel, seized control of the territory in 2007. The bitter enemies have fought four wars since then. There have also been numerous rounds of smaller fighting between Israel and Hamas and other smaller militant groups based in Gaza.

The blockade, which restricts the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza, has devastated the territory’s economy. Israel says the blockade is needed to keep militant groups from building up their arsenals. The Palestinians say the closure amounts to collective punishment.

The rocket fire comes during a period of heavy fighting in the West Bank, where nearly 200 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military raids this year. In the volatile northern West Bank, scores of militants and residents poured into the streets in celebration at the news of the rocket barrages.

Israel says the raids are aimed at militants, but stone-throwing protesters and people uninvolved in the violence have also been killed. Palestinian attacks on Israeli targets have killed over 30 people.

The tensions have also spread to Gaza, where Hamas-linked activists held violent demonstrations along the Israeli border in recent weeks. Those demonstrations were halted in late September after international mediation.
