“We are exploited all the time”: New York City UPS workers speak out as July 31 contract deadline draws closer

Work at UPS? We want to hear from you. Tell us what you’re demanding in the upcoming contract by filling out the form below. All submissions will be kept anonymous.

The contract for 340,000 United Parcel Service (UPS) workers is set to expire on July 31, only two months away. UPS workers across the country, like the working class as a whole, has watched its living standards plummet for generations, and are determined to win back decades of concessions made to the multi-billion-dollar logistics giant.

All of this was made possible by the treacherous, pro-company bureaucracy of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which has given away everything won by workers in earlier periods of explosive class struggles. In 2018, the Teamsters bureaucracy accepted and implemented the current concessionary UPS contract against an overwhelming rejection by the rank-and-file.

The new Teamsters administration, headed by President Sean O’Brien with key support from the pseudo-left Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU) caucus, is posturing as militant and even “left,” pledging to strike if no new deal is in place by July 31. But it is no less committed to the company’s bottom line than previous administrations. O’Brien and his gang have spent the last year enforcing the dictates of the ruling class and its state, playing a critical role in the banning of a national rail strike and strangling the struggles of countless workers across the continent.

Last week, UPS workers from Local 804 in New York City spoke with the World Socialist Web Site about the conditions they face in the most expensive city in the world and the struggle ahead.

A UPS trailer loader who had just finished a work shift told WSWS reporters, “The conditions for workers here are horrible. We are doing very heavy labor, and we only get paid $16 an hour in New York City. One worker here does double shifts every day just to keep his house because $16 an hour is so little money.”

“I load trailers, not trucks,” he continued. “Each trailer holds 3,500 or more packages. The weight of the vast majority of these packages ranges from 50 pounds to 90 pounds or more. There should be six or seven people a night doing this work. But because our pay is so low, people don’t show up a lot. We should have three people in the trucks, two people scanning and one pushing the packages down the conveyor belt. Tonight, we had five people, and we still loaded four trailers. After we finish a trailer, which is generally about 45 minutes or an hour’s work, we get a 10-minute break. That is all. Just 10 minutes, and we are back loading the next trailer.

“There is one person unloading one trailer by himself, and then he gets a 10-minute break. What is a 10-minute break when there is no stopping?

“The equipment we are working with is breaking down. When it does, and we put in a request for it to be fixed, it may not get fixed before the end of our shift. The conveyor systems are really old. We have to bend down to take the packages off the low conveyor belts. We have workers with bad backs and shoulder injuries as a result. The manual conveyor belts are old and have been here for years.

“Sometimes we have to lift the manual conveyor belt up and put it back on so it works. I think that is a maintenance job. When they can’t fix it, we tell the supervisor, and many times it doesn’t get fixed on our shift. Then we have to use another conveyor belt. We always have to have someone pushing the packages down the manual conveyor belt, and if we use the automatic conveyor somebody has to be there because it jams.

“What goes on here is the hardest work ever. We are exploited all the time, and there are cameras already where we work. We work carefully because we can’t afford to get injured. You can’t miss a day because the week’s pay is barely enough to pay the rent and bills. They need to pay us more money. $20 an hour would be a start.

Asked about the ongoing contract negotiations the worker said, “When you hear about the contract, it is mostly ‘he says, she says.’ I barely see my shop steward. I generally ask my supervisor. Raising our pay would bring more workers in. With a pay increase, I might work OT.

“The union only represents those closest to the company. I lift 120-pound boxes, only get 10-minute breaks and get paid $16 an hour. People like me who do the really hard work, they don’t represent us.”

The Teamsters have pledged not to begin negotiations on the national agreement until all regional supplemental deals have been bargained for. The union, however, violated its own pledge when it began national talks with two regional deals still outstanding. But even for those supplemental deals which have been agreed to, workers have not seen anything concrete.

A tractor trailer driver, when asked about the Local 804 Supplemental Contract, said, “I heard it has two more sick days in it.” Asked what more was in it and when the union would present it to the rank and file, he replied, “We don’t know too much more.” Workers are being left in the dark as the bureaucracy and management meet behind closed doors to cobble together contracts that fall far from meeting the needs of workers.

A 10-year warehouse worker advocated a contract with base pay for workers of almost $25 an hour. “For this contract, they should establish a base salary that pays $24.50 an hour, and see if that doesn’t work retaining workers and keep them coming to work. People are looking for money today. UPS is losing workers to Target and FedEx because they pay more. The health care here doesn’t count for that much.

“Neither the company nor the union want to listen to a 10-year worker like me. Now workers come in at $17 an hour if they raise the minimum wage. Maybe they could pay you $21 an hour while they train you like they do with the drivers. But they would have to train you well. The scanner equipment dies because they haven’t trained the worker properly. Training is critical. It is like getting into the union where it takes 40 days of work to get in the union. Then they rob you.

“UPS made $14 billion last year. It is money that attracts people, but it is Target that trains people at $18 and $19 an hour. And here it is only a select few who get chosen for extra pay and work. When I started here, I used to stay until 10 or 11 a.m.”

A pre-loader who has worked a few months at UPS commented, “We are getting $15.50 an hour. Our wages should be at least $20 an hour.”

Another loader coming off of a work shift commented, “I can’t get by on just this job. As a part-timer I make well under a living wage in this city. Many of us work two, three jobs. I’ve actually got a shift at Dairy Queen later today.

“I’ve got a son that I have to look after, and they don’t make it easy for me here. My son was sick the other day and I didn’t come to work. I just found out that they have suspended me because of that.”

Commenting on the contract negotiations, the worker said, “We don’t have a dog in the race. I’ve been here since 2019 and know what they did with this contract we are currently working under. It stinks and we need something better, but these guys [bureaucrats] will only look after themselves.”

Speaking about the formation of rank-and-file committees independent of the union apparatus and democratically controlled by the rank and file, uniting UPS workers with the working class more broadly, the worker said, “I think this is something that workers here will get behind. What we need is all the workers united. The different tiers that we have are meant to divide us up, but we are all in the same boat and have to take the initiative to move things forward.”

When asked about contract developments before starting his shift, a delivery driver stated, “This contract we have now is trash! We got nothing and aren’t getting anything if this keeps up.”

Clarios workers are taking a stand for all autoworkers. We must stand with them! No handling of scab batteries!

Striking workers at the Clarios battery plant on May 25, 2023 [Photo: WSWS]

The following statement was adopted by the Steering Committee of the Autoworkers Rank-and-File Committees to defend the striking Clarios auto battery workers in Holland, Ohio. For more information on setting up Clarios Strike Solidarity Committees, fill out the form at the end of this statement.

The Steering Committee of the Autoworkers Rank-and-File Committees calls on all UAW members to support the courageous struggle by 525 Clarios workers in the Toledo suburb of Holland, Ohio.

For more than three weeks, Clarios workers have stood up against the largest auto battery manufacturer in the world, which has tried to break their strike by cutting off medical benefits, obtaining a court injunction to limit picketing and hiring scab workers to replace the strikers. The Clarios workers have stood strong but they can’t fight this battle alone!

We call on autoworkers in the UAW to form Clarios Strike Solidarity Committees to hold discussions and raise the demand for a ban on the handling of scab batteries from Clarios. Before the strike, the Holland plant produced 125,000 to 150,000 batteries per week for Ford and General Motors alone.

Many workers may not know it but batteries from the Holland, Ohio and other Clarios plants are manufactured under the brand names of Motorcraft (Ford), AC Delco (GM) and Mopar (Stellantis) and we put them into top-selling models including the Ford F-Series, GM Silverado/Sierra, Dodge Ram trucks and many other models.

We should be repulsed by handling batteries produced by scab replacement workers at the Holland, Ohio plant or anywhere else the company is sending production. We cannot allow a situation where we are used to help Clarios and break the strike! If that happens it will only come back to haunt us when our own contracts expire in less than four months.

Last week, Clarios workers voted by 76 percent to reject a second contract recommended by UAW International and Local 12 officials. Like the first contract, it included cuts in real wages and a new schedule that would force workers to work 12-hour shifts without overtime payments after eight hours.

In voting down the deal, Clarios workers recognized that they are fighting not just for themselves but every autoworker. “If we bend, that will open the gates for GM, Ford and Stellantis,” one striking worker said. “We’re not going to let that happen.” Another worker added, “Our fight is their fight, their fight is ours.”

If Clarios can impose 12-hour shifts at straight time, along with another massive cut in real wages, GM, Ford and Stellantis will make similar demands.

The Big Three and Wall Street investors certainly see the Clarios strike as strategic. GM and Stellantis have long partnered with the battery maker, and sitting on the Clarios board are former top managers from GM and other auto corporations. The auto execs want to crush the Clarios strike and impose a humiliating defeat on the workers to strengthen their hands against the 170,000 Big Three autoworkers in the US and Canada whose contracts expire in mid-September.

In other words, the Clarios fight is the first battle in a bigger war against the demands of the global auto corporations that workers pay for the transition to electric vehicles through the destruction of our jobs, wages and working conditions.

We cannot rely on the UAW apparatus. While newly-elected UAW President Shawn Fain claimed that he was going to end the corruption and pro-corporate policies of his predecessor, he has responded to the Clarios strike just as Curry would. This includes trying to ram through contracts that workers don’t want in shotgun votes based on self-serving “highlights.”

Fain and the rest of the UAW bureaucracy are allowing the auto plants to continue production with scab batteries, which only strengthens Clarios and weakens our brothers and sisters. They are doing nothing to mobilize broader support, or even inform workers that the strike is staking place. Fain himself has not even bothered to visit the Clarios workers picket line.

There is a long tradition in the labor movement of workers refusing to handle products made by scabs. During the great Pullman strike of 1892, members of the American Railway Union refused to hitch sleeping cars manufactured by strikebreakers at the Pullman Company in Chicago. In the militant strikes in the 1970s and 1980s, both US and British miners joined with transport workers to block the movement of scab produced coal. In 1989 tens of thousands of US miners walked out in support of striking Pittston miners who had been replaced by scab labor.

Even as late as 1997, long after the union apparatus had become an instrument of corporate management, the UAW was forced due to enormous sentiment among workers to threaten Ford assembly plants with pickets during a strike at Johnson Control, Clarios’ predecessor. Ford then refused to accept scab made parts.

In a statement published last week, the newly-formed Clarios Workers Rank-and-File Committee declared, “Workers have enormous power. At the beginning of the strike many of us didn’t realize how essential we were to the entire auto industry. But there are already reports that Ford is running out of batteries and will have to cut back on production. At the same time, we are getting reports from Toledo Jeep, Warren Truck and the GM Flint Assembly Plant that workers do not want to handle scab batteries on their assembly lines.”

The committee is right. Workers have enormous power! But to realize this power we must organize ourselves.

The Steering Committee of Autoworkers Rank-and-File Committees has been established to organize the development of rank-and-file committees, comprised of, by and for the workers, in every plant.

We call on workers to form Clarios Strike Solidarity committees today to mobilize support among Big Three and auto workers. A particular appeal must be made for support to Clarios’ 5,800 workers at the company’s 18 plants around the US and the more than 10,000 other Clarios workers in Mexico, Brazil, Europe and Asia.

Contact us for assistance in establishing a committee! Spread the word, and let all your friends and coworkers know the facts and the issues that are at stake.

Watch: ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Star James Van Der Beek Rips DNC for Backing Biden — ‘No Debate, No Democracy,’ Do Your F**king Job’

Actor James Van Der Beek doesn’t want to wait for his life to be over to see a debate within the DNC. The Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues star publicly scolded the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for backing Joe Biden without allowing his challengers, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson, to debate him on television.

In a video posted to TikTok, Van Der Beek said that democracy cannot exist if an unelected elite decides who becomes president without allowing the people to hear all sides out in a debate, suggesting that America would be in control of Big Tech, Big Business, Big Pharma, and other major elites.

“How is this a democracy? And how is anybody in the DNC today going to post about thanking our troops and thanking the families who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our democracy and our way of freedom?”

“Now listen, I am grateful for them, but any member of the DNC who’s gonna think about that posting that today… Stop,” he added. “Think and do your fucking job before you start posting about how grateful you are that there are people out there who are willing to die to preserve our democracy because you are not preserving democracy right now.”

Van Der Beek said that the DNC heads have been “shoehorning” their pick and forcing it on the rest of the country. He also cited polls that show Robert Kennedy Jr. has 19 percent support while Marianne Williamson has 7 percent.

“That is a quarter of the vote who already thinks, at the very least, some debate about who ought to be president,” he asserted. “There’s no debate, there’s no democracy. No primary, no legitimate president.”

Billionaire Elon Musk also recently scolded the DNC for not allowing primary debates between Biden and the other candidates after The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur voiced his displeasure.

“DNC has already announced that it will not allow any debates in 2024 primary. Biden is not to be challenged. Everyone on the Democratic side must shut up and fall in line. Not having debates is undemocratic and ridiculous. No progressive should agree to this kind of power grab,” tweeted Uygur.

“We will do our best to support candidates from all parties, so that the public may make the most informed choice. Far too much back room dealing seems to be happening,” Musk later said.

Report: Big Tech Corporations Continue Hiring Foreign H-1B Visa Workers After Mass Layoffs of Americans

The nation’s biggest tech conglomerates continued hiring foreign workers through the H-1B visa program, even as they carried out mass layoffs of American employees, investigative reporter Lee Fang details.

Since the start of the year, hundreds of thousands of Americans in tech jobs have been laid off, with about 12,000 cut at Google, 10,000 out at Microsoft, close to 20,000 laid off at Amazon, and 10,000 cut from Meta Platforms which owns Facebook and Instagram.

Just weeks after announcing such layoffs, though, the same tech corporations continued hiring foreign workers on the H-1B visa program — known as the “outsourcing visa” to many Americans.

Lee Fang, formerly of The Interceptreports:

Sundar Pichai, the chief executive of Google, wrote a solemn letter in January, announcing his company’s decision to lay off 12,000 employees. [Emphasis added]

Just one month later, Pichai’s firm filed applications for low-paid foreign workers to come to America and take highly specialized tech jobs. Google filed dozens of applications for foreign workers to serve as software engineers, analytical consultants, user experience researchers, and other roles. Waymo, the self-driving car company owned by Google, also filed and received visa applications for engineering jobs. Many of the Google visas are for new employees, with some starting as soon as August 17th. [Emphasis added]

Newly disclosed data released yesterday by the Department of Labor shows thousands of recent H1-B foreign worker visas requested by firms that just underwent massive layoffs this year, including Facebook/Meta Platforms, Amazon, Zoom, Salesforce, Microsoft, and Palantir.
[Emphasis added]

That newly published data from Lee Fang matches similar research conducted by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), detailed by Breitbart News last month, which found that the top 30 tech corporations had announced a combined 85,000 layoffs while at the same time importing nearly 35,000 foreign H-1B visa workers to take coveted white-collar American jobs.

For years, Breitbart News has chronicled the abuses against white-collar American professionals as a result of the H-1B visa program. There are about 650,000 H-1B visa foreign workers in the U.S. at any given moment. Americans are often laid off in the process and forced to train their foreign replacements, as highlighted by Breitbart News.

“Rather than turning to the H-1B program as a last resort when U.S. workers cannot be found, most employers hire H-1B workers because they can be underpaid and are de facto indentured to the employer,” EPI researchers Daniel Costa and Ron Hira write.

“This is evidenced by government data showing that technology companies continue to hire H-1B workers in large numbers while significantly reducing the sizes of their workforces,” they continue.

The H-1B visa program has caught scrutiny from Republicans for years, though not much has been done to eliminate outsourcing from corporations.

While president in 2020, for example, Donald Trump enacted reforms to require companies seeking foreign H-1B visa workers to offer the highest salaries possible and also saved a number of Americans’ jobs at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) from being outsourced to foreign H-1B visa workers.

Trump is currently the frontrunner in the GOP presidential primary race.

Likewise, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who announced his presidential candidacy this month, has criticized the H-1B visa program for its favoritism to multinational corporations against white-collar American professionals.

“… if there’s legal immigration that’s harming Americans, we shouldn’t do that either,” DeSantis said during a press conference this month. “For example, some of these H-1B visas, they would fire American tech workers and hire foreigners at lower wages. I don’t agree with that. I think that’s wrong.”

Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), running for the United States Senate in Indiana, previously put forth a blueprint for reforming the H-1B visa program — many provisions of which were backed by former Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) when he served as a ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Banks bill would set a wage floor of $110,000 that companies would have to offer foreign H-1B visa workers or pay hires the same salary currently being paid to Americans doing the same job. Companies offering the highest salaries would be prioritized in the process.

Similarly, companies would be greatly limited in contracting with so-called “body shops” to replace their American employees with imported foreign H-1B visa workers under the Banks legislation.

Gabbard: Democratic Party ‘an Elitist Cabal of Warmongers — Corrupt Politicians, Propaganda Media, Big Tech and the National Security State’

Friday on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle,” former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard decried her former political party as tearing the country apart.

She described it as a group with ill intentions coalescing around a label.

“Now, I think what most of the — of today’s Democratic Party, they haven’t grappled with the fact that people aren’t leaving the party because of just one issue,” host Laura Ingraham said. “They’re leaving the party because of like 10 issues in the lurch to the left. That’s, I mean, they’ve gone so far left, they’ve left America. I mean, this is an unrecognizable coalition of radicals.”

“Yes, Laura, they’re lurching further and farther towards insanity. Really, there’s no other word that I can find to describe it, you know,” Gabbard replied. “The list of reasons, unfortunately, is long. And I think we will continue to see more and more Americans who maybe call themselves Democrats and are used to but leaving the Democratic Party because of a whole host of reasons. It’s, you know, an elitist cabal of warmongers that’s made of corrupt politicians, the propaganda media, big tech, and the national security state. They are weaponizing the security state to go after political opponents.”

“They’re undermining our God-given rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution,” she continued. “You know, they are seeking to censor and silence anyone who does not agree with them. They’re tearing us apart with identity politics and racializing everything looking at what the NAACP just announced with Florida. I mean, the list, unfortunately, we could do a whole show on all of these things. And I think more and more Americans are seeing clearly what they’re doing not to the party. This isn’t about the party, but it’s really what are they doing to this country and how are they undermining our rights and freedoms in our democracy. That’s really what’s at the heart of this.”

The number of foreign nationals holding jobs in the United States has hit the highest level since the Labor Department began tracking the data in 1996 as the employment of native-born Americans declines, a trend under President Joe Biden.

In 2022, foreign-born workers saw their share of the labor market hit the highest level in almost 30 years at more than 18 percent, with close to 30 million now holding U.S. jobs, according to data published in the Wall Street Journal.

FIFTEEN THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LA RAZA “THE RACE”

by Michelle Malkin

Only in America could critics of a group called "The Race" be labeled racists. Such is the triumph of left-wing identity chauvinists, whose aggressive activists and supine abettors have succeeded in redefining all opposition as "hate."

Both Barack Obama and John McCain will speak this week in San Diego at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza, the Latino organization whose name is Spanish for, yes, "The Race." Can you imagine Obama and McCain paying homage to a group of white people who called themselves that? No matter. The presidential candidates and the media have legitimized "The Race" as a mainstream ethnic lobbying group and marginalized its critics as intolerant bigots. The unvarnished truth is that the group is a radical ethnic nationalist outfit that abuses your tax dollars and milks PC politics to undermine our sovereignty.

Here are 15 things you should know about "The Race":

15. "The Race" supports driver's licenses for illegal aliens.

14."The Race" demands in-state tuition discounts for illegal alien students that are not available to law-abiding U.S. citizens and law-abiding legal immigrants.

13. "The Race" vehemently opposes cooperative immigration enforcement efforts between local, state and federal authorities.

12. "The Race" opposes a secure fence on the southern border.

11. "The Race" joined the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in a failed lawsuit attempt to prevent the feds from entering immigration information into a key national crime database -- and to prevent local police officers from accessing the data.

10. "The Race" opposed the state of Oklahoma's tough immigration-enforcement-first laws, which cut off welfare to illegal aliens, put teeth in employer sanctions and strengthened local-federal cooperation and information sharing.

9. "The Race" joined other open-borders, anti-assimilationists and sued to prevent Proposition 227, California's bilingual education reform ballot initiative, from becoming law.

8. "The Race" bitterly protested common-sense voter ID provisions as an "absolute disgrace."

7. "The Race" has consistently opposed post-9/11 national security measures at every turn.

6. Former "Race" president Raul Yzaguirre, Hillary Clinton's Hispanic outreach adviser, said this: "U.S. English is to Hispanics as the Ku Klux Klan is to blacks." He was referring to U.S. English, the nation's oldest, largest citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. "The Race" also pioneered Orwellian open-borders Newspeak and advised the Mexican government on how to lobby for illegal alien amnesty while avoiding the terms "illegal" and "amnesty."

5. "The Race" gives mainstream cover to a poisonous subset of ideological satellites, led by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, or Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan (MEChA). The late GOP Rep. Charlie Norwood rightly characterized the organization as "a radical racist group … one of the most anti-American groups in the country, which has permeated U.S. campuses since the 1960s, and continues its push to carve a racist nation out of the American West."

4. "The Race" is currently leading a smear campaign against staunch immigration enforcement leaders and has called for TV and cable news networks to keep immigration enforcement proponents off the airwaves -- in addition to pushing for Fairness Doctrine policies to shut up their foes. The New York Times reported that current "Race" president Janet Murguia believes "hate speech" should "not be tolerated, even if such censorship were a violation of First Amendment rights."

3. "The Race" sponsors militant ethnic nationalist charter schools subsidized by your public tax dollars (at least $8 million in federal education grants). The schools include Aztlan Academy in Tucson, Ariz., the Mexicayotl Academy in Nogales, Ariz., Academia Cesar Chavez Charter School in St. Paul, Minn., and La Academia Semillas del Pueblo in Los Angeles, whose principal inveighed: "We don't want to drink from a White water fountain, we have our own wells and our natural reservoirs and our way of collecting rain in our aqueducts. We don't need a White water fountain … ultimately the White way, the American way, the neo liberal, capitalist way of life will eventually lead to our own destruction."

2. "The Race" has perfected the art of the PC shakedown at taxpayer expense, pushing relentlessly to lower home loan standards for Hispanic borrowers, reaping millions in federal "mortgage counseling" grants, seeking special multimillion-dollar earmarks and partnering with banks that do business with illegal aliens.

1. "The Race" thrives on ethnic supremacy -- and the elite sheeple's unwillingness to call it what it is. As historian Victor Davis Hanson observes: "[The] organization's very nomenclature 'The National Council of La Raza' is hate speech to the core. Despite all the contortions of the group, Raza (as its Latin cognate suggests) reflects the meaning of 'race' in Spanish, not 'the people' -- and that's precisely why we don't hear of something like 'The National Council of the People,' which would not confer the buzz notion of ethnic, racial and tribal chauvinism."

The fringe is the center. The center is the fringe. Viva La Raza.
