LA RAZA’S CONTEMPT FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH:

4. "The Race" is currently leading a smear campaign against staunch immigration enforcement leaders and has called for TV and cable news networks to keep immigration enforcement proponents off the airwaves -- in addition to pushing for Fairness Doctrine policies to shut up their foes. The New York Times reported that current "Race" president Janet Murguia believes "hate speech" should "not be tolerated, even if such censorship were a violation of First Amendment rights."

WE ARE MEXICO’S WELFARE and PRISON SYSTEMS!
“Mexico’s government has provided its nationals with valuable tools to help them cross the border safely but Dominguez is the first American resident, with a salary provided by U.S. taxpayers, to openly promote such a gadget. A few years ago Mexican officials published a 32-page booklet (Guia Del Migrante Mexicano) with safety tips for border crossers and distributed hand-held satellite devices to ensure the violators complete their journey safely.”

MOST OF THE FORTUNE 500 ARE DONORS TO LA RAZA
LA RAZA, THE MEXICAN FASCIST PARTY of AMERICA IS THE FASTEST GROWING POLITICAL PARTY IN AMERICA! THE GOAL IS OPEN BORDERS, AMNESTY & MEXICAN SUPREMACY.
THERE ARE 90 MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES’ CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CAUCUS, WHICH IS LA RAZA.
CALIFORNIA HAS FOUR LA RAZA MEMBERS OF CONGRESS. ALL ARE HIGHLY RACIST MEXICAN SUPREMACISTS.
THEY ARE:
Rep. Xavier Becerra
Rep. Joe Baca
Rep. Loretta Sanchez
Rep. Linda Sanchez (sister above)
IN OBAMA’S STATE, Rep. Luis Gutierrez is pushing for RADICAL AMNESTY.

ALL WERE ELECTED WITH THE CONSIDERABLE VOTES OF ILLEGALS.
ALL VOTED TO INCLUDE ILLEGALS IN THE PELOSI-OBAMACARE
Reps. Becerra, and both Sanchez sisters have condemned the people of Arizona for attempting to secure their borders against the Mexican invasion, occupation, crime tidal wave, and ever expanding welfare state for illegals.

FIFTEEN THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LA RAZA “THE RACE”
by Michelle Malkin
(get Malkin’s book on OBAMA NOTED below!)
Only in America could critics of a group called "The Race" be labeled racists. Such is the triumph of left-wing identity chauvinists, whose aggressive activists and supine abettors have succeeded in redefining all opposition as "hate."
Both Barack Obama and John McCain will speak this week in San Diego at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza, the Latino organization whose name is Spanish for, yes, "The Race." Can you imagine Obama and McCain paying homage to a group of white people who called themselves that? No matter. The presidential candidates and the media have legitimized "The Race" as a mainstream ethnic lobbying group and marginalized its critics as intolerant bigots. The unvarnished truth is that the group is a radical ethnic nationalist outfit that abuses your tax dollars and milks PC politics to undermine our sovereignty.
*
Here are 15 things you should know about "The Race":
*
15. "The Race" supports driver's licenses for illegal aliens.
*
14."The Race" demands in-state tuition discounts for illegal alien students that are not available to law-abiding U.S. citizens and law-abiding legal immigrants.
*
13. "The Race" vehemently opposes cooperative immigration enforcement efforts between local, state and federal authorities.
*
12. "The Race" opposes a secure fence on the southern border.
*
11. "The Race" joined the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in a failed lawsuit attempt to prevent the feds from entering immigration information into a key national crime database -- and to prevent local police officers from accessing the data.
*
10. "The Race" opposed the state of Oklahoma's tough immigration-enforcement-first laws, which cut off welfare to illegal aliens, put teeth in employer sanctions and strengthened local-federal cooperation and information sharing.
*
9. "The Race" joined other open-borders, anti-assimilationists and sued to prevent Proposition 227, California's bilingual education reform ballot initiative, from becoming law.
*
8. "The Race" bitterly protested common-sense voter ID provisions as an "absolute disgrace."
*
7. "The Race" has consistently opposed post-9/11 national security measures at every turn.
*
6. Former "Race" president Raul Yzaguirre, Hillary Clinton's Hispanic outreach adviser, said this: "U.S. English is to Hispanics as the Ku Klux Klan is to blacks." He was referring to U.S. English, the nation's oldest, largest citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. "The Race" also pioneered Orwellian open-borders Newspeak and advised the Mexican government on how to lobby for illegal alien amnesty while avoiding the terms "illegal" and "amnesty."
*
5. "The Race" gives mainstream cover to a poisonous subset of ideological satellites, led by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, or Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan (MEChA). The late GOP Rep. Charlie Norwood rightly characterized the organization as "a radical racist group … one of the most anti-American groups in the country, which has permeated U.S. campuses since the 1960s, and continues its push to carve a racist nation out of the American West."
*
*
3. "The Race" sponsors militant ethnic nationalist charter schools subsidized by your public tax dollars (at least $8 million in federal education grants). The schools include Aztlan Academy in Tucson, Ariz., the Mexicayotl Academy in Nogales, Ariz., Academia Cesar Chavez Charter School in St. Paul, Minn., and La Academia Semillas del Pueblo in Los Angeles, whose principal inveighed: "We don't want to drink from a White water fountain, we have our own wells and our natural reservoirs and our way of collecting rain in our aqueducts. We don't need a White water fountain … ultimately the White way, the American way, the neo liberal, capitalist way of life will eventually lead to our own destruction."
*
2. "The Race" has perfected the art of the PC shakedown at taxpayer expense, pushing relentlessly to lower home loan standards for Hispanic borrowers, reaping millions in federal "mortgage counseling" grants, seeking special multimillion-dollar earmarks and partnering with banks that do business with illegal aliens.
*
1. "The Race" thrives on ethnic supremacy -- and the elite sheeple's unwillingness to call it what it is. As historian Victor Davis Hanson observes: "[The] organization's very nomenclature 'The National Council of La Raza' is hate speech to the core. Despite all the contortions of the group, Raza (as its Latin cognate suggests) reflects the meaning of 'race' in Spanish, not 'the people' -- and that's precisely why we don't hear of something like 'The National Council of the People,' which would not confer the buzz notion of ethnic, racial and tribal chauvinism."

Nancy Pelosi's Stake in AMNESTY, NO ENFORCEMENT, NO WALL, NO E-VERIFY and AMNESTY

“Do we really need a House Speaker whose every action is calculated to enhance her own financial interests, instead of focusing on how porous borders will affect the security of everyday American citizens?”

Pelosi's Stake in Illegal Immigration

The Minuteman Project, founded by Jim Gilchrist (who is also the co-author of the book Minutemen: The Battle to Secure America’s Borders), is made up of citizen volunteers who watch our border with Mexico and report illegal entry to the border patrol. For performing that thankless task in full compliance with the law, Gilchrist and his colleagues have been falsely maligned as fascists, racists, and even murderers. They have been driven off the speaker’s platform at Columbia University and vilified by Leftist politicians and their handmaidens in the liberal press.

So it was no surprise that the mainstream media chose to ignore a recent press release, issued by his publisher, in which Gilchrist asked the question about Nancy Pelosi’s ethics that should be on the minds of every law-abiding American – including those immigrants who are following the law to become citizens here the proper way: “Do we really need a House Speaker whose every action is calculated to enhance her own financial interests, instead of focusing on how porous borders will affect the security of everyday American citizens?”

Gilchrist did not stop there. He demanded an investigation into Pelosi’s “economic stake in just the kind of illegal alien exploitation that we deplore in Minutemen.” But you would never know it from the liberal media, who - while ignoring this demand - have had no compunctions in calling for Speaker Hastert’s head in the wake of the Foley page controversy.

Gilchrist was reacting to my report several weeks ago in FrontPage Magazine that Pelosi – who owns non-union vineyards in Napa Valley where grape-picking depends chiefly on the availability of cheap foreign labor – is doing everything she can to help open the floodgates to more illegal immigration. And she wants the American taxpayers to pay their way. As even more proof of this than I previously reported, Pelosi does not want employers like her to be required to pay the cost of illegal aliens’ hospital care. She voted against a bill that would make employers liable for the reimbursements if an undocumented employee seeks medical attention. And she voted in favor of rewarding illegal aliens from Mexico with Social Security benefits.

At the same time, Pelosi has led the Democratic opposition to any effective border controls or documentation requirements. She opposed the Secure Fence Act of 2006, signed into law by President Bush, and voted against final passage of a border security and enforcement bill in 2005 which required that all businesses must use an electronic system to check if all new hires have the legal right to work in this country. She voted against a bill to bar drivers' licenses for illegal aliens in 2005. This year she opposed legislation requiring presentation of a legitimate government-issued photo ID to prove eligibility to vote, claiming that “there is little evidence anywhere in the country of a significant problem with non-citizen voters.” She is dead wrong. For example, an accused terrorist by the name of Nuradin Abdi was just recently reported to have illegally registered to vote at the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Nuradin Abdi was indicted earlier this year as part of a conspiracy to blow up the Columbus Mall.

How many other terrorist suspects may have slipped through the system because Leftists like Pelosi oppose any meaningful screens? Instead she continues to advocate our recognition of the flimsy, non-validated ID card that the Mexican consulates provide to illegal aliens before they cross over our border, called the “matricula consular”, which gives them phony documentation to set up bank accounts, apply for jobs, obtain social benefits, board airplanes, identify themselves to police, enter buildings that require IDs, obtain drivers’ licenses and then perhaps use those drivers’ licenses to try to illegally register to vote in our elections.

Pelosi also believes in giving sanctuary to illegal aliens. She opposed legislation to deny federal homeland security funding to state and local governments who refuse to share information they learn about an individual's immigration status with Federal immigration authorities. Pelosi’s hometown of San Francisco is one of the sanctuary cities she voted to protect for the benefit of illegal aliens. Pelosi even voted against strengthening our immigration law with regard to the deportability of alien terrorists.
Jim Gilchrist cut to the chase with this devastating observation that the mainstream media does not want you to read:
"As we’ve shown again and again in ‘Minutemen,’ the Democrats aren’t just hypocrites, but are working actively to subvert our legislative system to their own ends. Their only goal is votes, votes and more votes, no matter where they come from, no matter if they’re cast legally, no matter whether the person casting them is dead, alive, a citizen or an illegal alien."

Pelosi sees Jim Gilchrist’s Minutemen Project as a threat to her pro-illegal alien agenda. More illegal aliens mean more votes for the Democrats and more grape-pickers for Napa Valley vineyards like hers. So she even voted against a measure that would have cut off the use of U.S. taxpayers’ funds to tip off illegal aliens as to where the Minutemen citizen patrols may be located! She obviously wants to see the Minutemen put out of business – permanently. She can count on the liberal press to distort the work of the Minutemen and to keep out of the public eye Gilchrist’s pointed questions about her motivations for helping illegal aliens during the run-up to the mid-term elections that may make her the next Speaker of the House.

Gilchrist, of course, is accustomed to being vilified and prevented by the Left from getting his message out. In early October, he was prevented from finishing his speech at the "Minutemen Forum" sponsored by the Columbia College Republicans. Gilchrist had spoken for just a few minutes and managed to utter the words “I love the First Amendment” when a group of radical protestors took the stage and interrupted him, displaying a big banner saying "There are no illegals." More protestors then stormed the stage. Chaos erupted and the audience members who had come to hear Gilchrist speak never got the chance, which was precisely the protestors’ objective. As reported online by the staff of Columbia’s undergraduate newspaper, “a mosh pit of triumphal students and community members danced and chanted outside, "Asian, Black, Brown and White, we smashed the Minutemen tonight!" They also put out a statement declaring:

“The Minutemen are not a legitimate voice in the debate on immigration. They are a racist, armed militia who have declared open hunting season on immigrants, causing countless hate crimes and over 3000 deaths on the border. Why should exploitative corporations have free passes between nations, but individual people not? No human being is illegal.” (Emphasis added)

We have come to the point in this country where a bunch of radical protestors get to decide who is and who is not a legitimate voice in the debate on as critical a public policy issue as immigration. Such Leftists think that migration in a borderless world is a basic human right. They want no barriers, no guards, and no proof of lawful residency. They certainly do not want the Minutemen watching the border and reporting illegal entry to the authorities.

Leftist slogans like “no human being is illegal” are red herrings. It is not the human being who is illegal; it is what the human being does that may be illegal. One’s conduct is the test, not simply who one is. Immigrants who follow our rules are welcome here. Those who do not abide by our laws have no right to be here. A person who breaks into your house without your permission does not deserve room, board and a job as a reward, even if the intruder may be much poorer than you. He has broken the law and deserves to be punished for what he has done. Our country’s boundaries and rules for entry and residency similarly define who is permitted to be here and how we choose to protect ourselves. We are a land of immigrants, but we are also a land of laws with certain core values. Those seeking to enter our country and remain here must learn to accommodate to our laws and values, not the other way around. That is the way prior generations of immigrants did it, including those who passed through Ellis Island. Why should the law be thrown aside now?

What we are witnessing is a frontal challenge to our nation’s sovereignty. Mexico’s Foreign Secretary wants to drag us before the United Nations for intending to build a fence on our side of the border with our money to keep out aliens who seek to enter our country illegally. They will probably get a sympathetic ear as some UN bureaucrats believe there should be no such thing as “illegal” immigrants in the first place. For the first time in our history, Americans are being asked to cede the right to decide how we define ourselves as a nation and protect our own borders to a globalist governance body. Will Pelosi lead her liberal loyalists as House Speaker to support the UN against America’s right to control its own borders? Do we really want to risk finding out?

It is high time, as Jim Gilchrist demanded in the press release ignored by the mainstream media, that Pelosi come clean under oath as to her personal stake in the illegal immigration issue before she can do even more damage as House Speaker.

“Now House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has moved to kill an amendment that would protect employers from federal lawsuits for requiring their workers to speak English.”

Nancy Pelosi tries to force the Salvation Army to hire people
http://opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110010881

It's been less than a week since New York's Sen. Hillary Clinton and Gov. Eliot Spitzer had to climb down from their support of driver's licenses for illegal aliens. Now House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has moved to kill an amendment that would protect employers from federal lawsuits for requiring their workers to speak English. Among the employers targeted by such lawsuits: the Salvation Army. Sen. Lamar Alexander, a moderate Republican from Tennessee, is dumbstruck that legislation he views as simple common sense would be blocked. He noted that the full Senate passed his amendment to shield the Salvation Army by 75-19 last month, and the House followed suit with a 218-186 vote just this month. "I cannot imagine that the framers of the 1964 Civil Rights Act intended to say that it's discrimination for a shoe shop owner to say to his or her employee, 'I want you to be able to speak America's common language on the job,' " he told the Senate last Thursday. But that's exactly what the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is trying to do. In March the EEOC sued the Salvation Army because its thrift store in Framingham, Mass., required its employees to speak English on the job. The requirement was clearly posted and employees were given a year to learn the language. The EEOC claimed the store had fired two Hispanic employees for continuing to speak Spanish on the job. It said that the firings violated the law because the English-only policy was not "relevant" to job performance or safety. "If it is not relevant, it is discriminatory, it is gratuitous, it is a subterfuge to discriminate against people based on national origin," says Rep. Charles Gonzalez of Texas, one of several Hispanic Democrats in the House who threatened to block Ms. Pelosi's attempts to curtail the Alternative Minimum Tax unless she killed the Alexander amendment. The confrontation on the night of Nov. 8 was ugly. Members of the Hispanic Caucus initially voted against the rule allowing debate on a tax bill that included the AMT "patch," which for a year would protect some 23 million Americans from being kicked into a higher income tax bracket. Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a moderate from Maryland, was beside himself. Congressional Quarterly reports that he jabbed his finger on the House floor at Joe Baca, the California Democrat who chairs the Hispanic Caucus, and yelled, "How dare you destroy this party? This will be the worst loss in 10 years." Mr. Baca was having none of it. "You see this on the [voting] board?," he yelled back. "This is against me. This is against me personally." Luckily for Democrats, C-Span's microphones did not pick up the exchange. But it was audible to reporters in the press gallery. They also heard Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois say that English-only efforts were symbolic of "bigotry and prejudice" against those who speak other languages. After testy negotiations, the Hispanic Caucus finally agreed to let the tax bill proceed after extracting a promise from Ms. Pelosi that the House will not vote on the bill funding the Justice and Commerce Departments unless the English-only protection language is dropped. "There ain't going to be a bill" with the Alexander language, Mr. Baca has told reporters.

THOUSANDS OF SMALL BUSINESSES HIRING “CHEAP” MEXICAN LABOR THAT CAN’T SPEAK A BIT OF ENGLISH WILL BE INCONVENIENCE .Sen. Alexander says that if that's the case, "thousands of small businesses across America will have to show there is some special reason to justify requiring their employees to speak our country's common language on the job." He notes that the number of EEOC actions against English-only policies grew to some 200 last year from 32 a decade ago. In an attempt at compromise, he has offered watered-down language that would still allow the EEOC to file many actions, but he says House Democrats rejected it.

Cost of teaching English learning students in SB County $34M
Stephen Wall, Staff Writer
Posted: 01/30/2010 02:59:01 PM PST

San Bernardino County public schools are spending more than $34 million in state and federal money this school year to educate English learners, a group whose population has doubled since 1995.
That amount doesn't include additional funding for services and programs available to English learners as well as other students.
Fueled by skyrocketing immigration over the past 15 years, the growth is forcing school districts to make dramatic changes in the classroom.
Districts are making huge investments in teacher preparation and training, hiring bilingual aides and purchasing bilingual materials to help teachers handle the demographic shift.
Some are concerned about the need to focus limited resources on students who may be in the country illegally or whose parents are illegal immigrants. Federal law requires public schools to provide a free kindergarten through 12th grade education to all students regardless of immigration status.
"A lot of parents came here illegally with their children or had children born here. It's creating a huge burden on the state," said Assemblyman Steve Knight, R-Palmdale, whose district includes Victorville and the High Desert. "We have to have so many of these classes that it takes away from the core classes that I'd like to fund."
Gil Navarro, a member of the San Bernardino County board of education, said that immigrant students and English learners are not a drain on the educational system.
"I get tired of people complaining about English learners receiving lawful services when our school districts are just following federal laws," Navarro said. "Taxpayer money is being put to good use because the funding will provide an educated workforce."
More than one-in-five kindergarten through 12th grade students in the county public school system is an English learner, according to the state Department of Education. Five school districts have English learner enrollments of at least 25 percent. The overwhelming majority of English learners - 94 percent - identify Spanish as their first language.
"With the growth, we have had to relook at how we approach our English learners," said Martha Duenas, coordinator of the Department of English Learner Services for the Fontana Unified School District. Nearly four-in-10 Fontana Unified students is an English learner.
"It's a challenge for schools to meet the needs of English learners," said Bertha Arreguin, director of language support services for the Colton Joint Unified School District, where one-quarter of students are English learners.
Most English learners were born in the United States, but their parents came here during the immigration boom that started in the 1980s, intensified in the 1990s and continued through the last decade, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, a nonprofit research organization in Washington, D.C.
The school-age population in the United States, which now stands at about 53 million, is expected to reach 58 million by 2020.
More than 80 percent of that growth - about 4.5 million kids - will be the children of immigrant parents, the center projects.
Growing up in immigrant families where English is not spoken at home puts added pressure on schools to help students meet increasingly rigorous academic requirements.
"Nationally, schools and school districts are going to be faced with more and more students who will need English learner services," said Richard Fry, senior research associate at the center.
Locally, school districts receive three pots of state and federal money to specifically to educate students with limited English skills.
Districts get an average of $244 per student from the state in economic impact aid. They also receive about $95 per student in federal Title III funds for immigrant students. An additional $100 per student is available for pupils in grades four through eight from the state-funded English Language Acquisition Program.
The three funding sources total $34.4 million when multiplied the number of students in each category.
English learners often use other services such as free and reduced lunch programs that are not included in that cost, school officials say.
There are other pools of money that support English learners who receive special education, as well as English learners who are in the Gifted and Talented Education program.
"It's money well-spent because the majority of these students are U.S. citizens," said Lupe Andrade, director of English learner programs in the Rialto Unified School District, where nearly one-in-three students is an English learner.
"We want them to leave our educational system well-educated so they can contribute well to our economy," Andrade said. "Language shouldn't be a barrier to educating somebody."
While programs have their differences, many districts spend their English learner money in similar ways.
A large chunk is devoted to staff development to provide teachers with strategies to engage English learners. Administrators are also trained to identify the needs of English learners.
Many districts have teacher coaches specializing in English learner students who act as a resource for their colleagues and supplemental classroom supplies.
Districts also set aside time every day for intensive speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.
Officials say support systems are critical to help districts whose large numbers of English learner students are one reason for their low test scores.
"We've had good growth (in test scores) with English learners," said Daniel Arellano, director of English learner programs for the San Bernardino City Unified School District, which has a 33-percent English learner population.
"We're aren't anywhere near where we should be," Arellano said, "but we are much better than we were."
The Ontario-Montclair Unified School District, where nearly half the students are English learners, offers a newcomer class to help immigrant students get acclimated to this country.
"Our job is to educate students and take them from wherever they're at and move them forward," said Karla Wells, the district's director of academic accountability.
Critics say illegal immigration is breaking the state's bank and that illegal immigrants shouldn't get special services.
In 2004, California spent $7.7 billion to educate illegal immigrants and the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants, according to a report from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which supports strict limits on immigration.
"The costs are astronomical," said Raymond Herrera, founder and president of We The People California's Crusader, a Claremont-based anti-illegal immigration group. "American posterity is very much in peril. We can't go on this way."

LA RAZA DEMS & MEXICAN OCCUPIERS DEMAND SPANISH LANGUAGE

ILLEGALS HATE THE GRINGO LANGUAGE. AS PART OF THE LA RAZA OCCUPATION, THE LANGUAGE OF THE OCCUPIERS MUST BE SPOKEN. THE COST OF THIS TO BE BORN BY LEGALS! VIVA LA RAZA! VIVA MEXICO!

Hiring bilingual police officers and city staffers costs money the town doesn't have, the mayor said.

The Justice Department said the town had to provide translation for people who aren't English-proficient.

A Washington town confronts its language barrier

In a program seen as a bellwether, the Justice Department steps in with a formal plan to bridge the English-Spanish divide in Mattawa.

By Stuart Glascock
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

May 25, 2008MATTAWA, WASH — . -- Nearly everyone in this small farming community in eastern Washington speaks Spanish -- nearly everyone except those in city government and the Police Department, where English is spoken.
And almost everyone who speaks one language does not speak the other. That language barrier has engulfed the community, which has grown over the last 20 years from 300 to about 3,200 year-round residents. Nine out of 10 Mattawa residents speak Spanish at home, and 8 out of 10 adults speak English "less than very well," according to the 2000 U.S. Census. The Columbia River basin community, surrounded by miles of fruit orchards and vineyards, has tried to deal with its language barrier informally. From the first gas station to the last retail shop, signs advertise goods and services in Spanish and English. The tiny library offers bilingual story time for families. For years, police often relied on bystanders to translate at crime scenes. City administrators grabbed bilingual speakers as ad hoc interpreters. But the gap between an English-speaking city government and an overwhelmingly Spanish-speaking population has grown so wide that the federal government has stepped in to mandate that the city bridge the divide. After a legal aid group filed a Civil Rights Act complaint, the U.S. Department of Justice worked with the city and Police Department to develop a language assistance plan. Adopted in March, the plan is unique in Washington and is seen as a bellwether for cities with similar demographics. The plan requires Mattawa to employ at least one bilingual employee during regular business hours and to make vital information available in Spanish as well as English. It also requires the police to have qualified interpreters on call at all times. For a long time, the Northwest Justice Project knew that Mattawa police did not speak Spanish and did not use interpreters, said Judith Lurie, senior attorney for the group, which launched the federal complaint. Then a call for help in a domestic violence case focused the issue. Mattawa police allowed the suspect to leave the scene to find someone to interpret, Lurie said. The man never returned. The police had tried to use the couple's children as interpreters, but they were too traumatized by the fighting. Their terrified mother drove them 60 miles to a safe house."Victims of domestic violence rely on the police to protect them," Lurie said. In Mattawa, "they were not being adequately protected because the police were not using interpreters to communicate."Mattawa Mayor Judy Esser said the domestic violence case was unusual. Before the language agreement, police and city officials usually had someone around who could translate."We thought that was enough," she said. The Justice Department said the town had to provide translation for people who aren't English-proficient. In places that have a high percentage of monolingual Spanish speakers, that means all city services, including law enforcement, have to be available in Spanish. Hiring bilingual police officers and city staffers costs money the town doesn't have, the mayor said. Mattawa employs one provisional officer and three full-time officers."We are in a huge competition with every city," Esser said. "It is tough to find bilingual people, especially when the state patrol and county sheriff pay more."Mattawa, about 130 miles southeast of Seattle, is not a wealthy place. The town is wedged between the Yakima Training Center Military Reservation and the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site. During harvest season, the town's population nearly doubles with migrant farmworkers. They journey hundreds or thousands of miles to pick the region's apples, pears and cherries. The local government struggles with growing pains and has a limited tax base. More than half of the property owners don't pay taxes because they are subsidized or nonprofits. Esser called the growth of farmworker housing "much needed" but a strain on other systems and services. The streets are lined with prefabricated houses and rundown mobile homes. Chain stores and fast-food restaurants bypassed the town. Immigrants can find authentic meals from their home countries at El Jato, El Caribe, La Popular, La Parilla, Rallito de Luna and La Maravita. Satellite TV beams in Spanish-language news and soap operas. The Catholic Diocese of Yakima Housing Services operates low-income housing in Mattawa. The state's migrant council runs a child development center that has a long waiting list. Residents point with pride to the new high school and community clinic.Jose Fernandez manages an unusual migrant housing project: the Esperanza, a village of 40 reconstructed cargo containers. Six people squeeze into each unit. Families pay $10 per day; singles, $3.Fernandez sees Mattawa Police on patrol regularly, and he gives them credit."They relate. They work with the people," he said. "They do their job."Maria Belen Ledezma, a 35-year resident who works in agricultural services for the state's employment office in Mattawa, says the police should work harder to resolve the language barrier."How would [Spanish-only speakers] understand what law enforcement is requesting? If they are stopped, how would they know what their rights are?" she asked. Jim Desler commutes from Ellensburg, 46 miles away, to teach migrant workers English through a community college extension program. He doesn't see a huge divide between town officials and the immigrants."I've never heard any complaints about access to city services or the Police Department," he said. Former Mattawa City Councilwoman Blanca Fernandez recently moved to Yakima, though she still works in town. She sometimes serves as a translator for the Mattawa Police Department."There has been an effort to deal with the language issues," she said."We live in such a rural area. It's a hard labor pool. Things are getting better. People are trying to fix things."

OBAMA IGNORES PLEAS FOR NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS
Lawmakers from states bordering Mexico are ticked off. More than a year after they asked the White House for National Guard troops to be deployed there, the Obama administration still has not formally responded.

In March 2009, governors of Texas and Arizona -- along with many of their states' Capitol Hill legislators -- pleaded with the White House to better secure their citizens and businesses from the swelling tide of smugglers, illegal immigrants and Mexican drug-war violence spilling over the border.

The administration promised to study the request and get back to them.

They didn't, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer say. Last month, Brewer complained that she had pleaded five times in letters to President Obama for more federal muscle, to no avail.
The administration says it has not been ignoring the border problems, noting that there now are airborne drones conducting surveillance flights; a full complement of 20,000 Border Patrol agents; a 653-mile border fence in place, and about $70 million sent in law-enforcement aid.
The governors say the border area remains unacceptably dangerous, citing the March murder of an Arizona rancher and the wounding of an Arizona deputy this month.
U.S. Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl, both Arizona Republicans, issued an urgent request

Tonight, we’ll have all the latest on the devastating floods in the Midwest and all the day’s news from the campaign trail. The massive corporate mouthpiece the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is holding a “North American Forum” to lay out its “shared vision” for the United States, Canada and Mexico – which is to say a borderless, pro-business super-state in which U.S. sovereignty will be dissolved. Undercover investigators have found incredibly lax security and enforcement at U.S. border crossings, according to a new report by the Government Accountability Office. This report comes on the heels of a separate report by U.C. San Diego that shows tougher border security efforts aren’t deterring illegal entries to the United States.

Obama soft on illegals enforcement

Arrests of illegal immigrant workers have dropped precipitously under President Obama, according to figures released Wednesday. Criminal arrests, administrative arrests, indictments and convictions of illegal immigrants at work sites all fell by more than 50 percent from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2009.

The figures show that Mr. Obama has made good on his pledge to shift enforcement away from going after illegal immigrant workers themselves - but at the expense of Americans' jobs, said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the Republican who compiled the numbers from the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). Mr. Smith, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said a period of economic turmoil is the wrong time to be cutting enforcement and letting illegal immigrants take jobs that Americans otherwise would hold.

ARIZONA'S SMALL BUSINESS OWNER SUPPORT ARIZONA'S NEW IMMIGRATION LAW

Plenty of small-business owners support Arizona’s tough new immigration law, despite concerns from the tourism sector and chambers of commerce over boycotts, lost conventions and a tarnished state image.

Recent public opinion polls show they are not alone, as the majority of Arizona voters back the new measure allowing police to question and arrest suspected illegal immigrants on broad trespassing charges.

“I kind of like the idea that this is going to enforce the law,” said Marc DeRosa, owner of Advance Paper & Maintenance Supply Inc. in Mesa.

DeRosa, whose company provides janitorial supplies to maintenance companies, is frustrated with the lack of federal border security over the years and is uneasy with changes to older neighborhoods and commercial corridors such as Broadway Road.

“Everything is mostly in Spanish, and I don’t like that,” DeRosa said of the business signs along Broadway in older areas of the East Valley.

DeRosa is not worried about boycotts or losing events such as the Super Bowl because of the new law and pressure from Hispanic activists. He said the law could reduce illegal immigration and improve the quality of life for winter visitors who visit the Valley each year.

“They are the biggest single source of outside income,” he said.

Randy Delbridge, owner of Superior Surveying Services Inc. in Phoenix, said the state measure is just a new plan to enforce existing immigration statutes.

“How ironic is that? A law to enforce a law,” said Delbridge, adding that illegal immigration hurts his company and the state. “We carry firearms at all times when surveying remotely, especially along the border.”

Delbridge said illegal immigrants account for much of the serious crime committed in Arizona, and they push up health care costs because they are uninsured and go to emergency rooms. He also faults federal prosecutors for not going after more drug cases tied to Mexican smugglers.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has said about 20 percent of those in county jails are illegal immigrants. Former County Attorney Andrew Thomas estimated that illegal immigrants committed 36 percent of the kidnappings, 34 percent of the drug-related crimes and 17 percent of the violent crimes in the Valley in 2007.

Nationally, illegal immigrants cost the U.S. health system $4 billion a year, according to the Center for Immigration Studies.

Despite vociferous opposition to the law from Hispanic protesters — and concerns that it makes Arizona appear intolerant and racist — state and national polls show support for the measure. A Rasmussen Reports poll released May 4 shows 59 percent of the 500 people polled nationwide back the Arizona law, while 32 percent oppose it.

A Rocky Mountain Poll conducted by the Behavior Research Center and released May 5 found that 52 percent of Arizonans support the law, 39 percent oppose it and 9 percent are undecided.

Ginia Lucas, co-owner of Y-Knot Party Rentals in Mesa, said it is not easy for business owners to speak out in favor of the new law. She doesn’t want to alienate Hispanic customers, and she’s aware of distress over the law and Arizona’s image coming from the tourism sector.

“As a small-business owner, it is difficult for us to verbally support it,” Lucas said.

Still, she backs the law on the grounds that illegal immigration and fake work documents are a hassle when it comes to hiring workers.

Lucas has 18 workers and uses the federal E-Verify system to make sure potential employees are here legally. She said many small businesses are frustrated by the process, which prevents them from hiring illegal immigrants while at the same time prohibiting them from unfairly scrutinizing Latino workers’ papers.

“You’re at an impasse,” she said.

Jim Morlan, CEO of Electric Supply Inc. in Phoenix, said small-business owners are concerned about illegal immigration’s damage to the state, and they want something done about it. He agrees with Gov. Jan Brewer’s assessment that the state law mimics federal rules requiring immigrants to carry work permits and travel visas.

“The only serious analysis of the bill that I have heard says it very much mirrors federal regulations. Since federal regulations are not being enforced, the state of Arizona is going to enforce them,” Morlan said.

Electric Supply, an electrical material wholesaler, has been in business since 1952.

Morlan does not like media coverage of the issue.

“I do worry about the boycotts and other fallout because of the hysteria that is being caused and spread by the media,” he said. “I don’t think there is anything factual behind the hysteria. So it is damaging to Arizona, but it shouldn’t be.”

HISPANDERING BARACK OBAMA CONTINUES ASSAULT ON PEOPLE of ARIZONA

Attorney General Eric Holder says the Justice Department may sue Arizona over its new immigration law.

Washington (CNN) -- Attorney General Eric Holder said Sunday that the Justice Department was considering a federal lawsuit against Arizona's new immigration law.

"We are considering all of our options. One possibility is filing a lawsuit," Holder told NBC's "Meet the Press." Possible grounds for the lawsuit would be whether the Arizona law could lead to civil rights violations, he said.

By the CNN Wire Staff
May 9, 2010

The recently enacted Arizona law initially allowed police to ask anyone for proof of legal U.S. residency, based solely on a police officer's suspicion that the person might be in the country illegally. Arizona lawmakers soon amended the law so that officers could check a person's status only if the person had been stopped or arrested for another reason.

Critics say the law will lead to racial profiling, while supporters say it involves no racial profiling and is needed to crack down on increasing crime involving illegal immigrants.

In Arizona, the city councils of Tucson and Flagstaff have decided to challenge the new immigration law in court.

Holder told ABC's "This Week" program that one concern about the Arizona law is that "you'll end up in a situation where people are racially profiled, and that could lead to a wedge drawn between certain communities and law enforcement, which leads to the problem of people in those communities not willing to interact with people in law enforcement, not willing to share information, not willing to be witnesses where law enforcement needs them."

"I think we could potentially get on a slippery slope where people will be picked on because of how they look as opposed to what they have done, and that is, I think, something that we have to try to avoid at all costs," Holder added.

Holder said comprehensive federal immigration reform is the best approach for the problem of illegal immigrants crossing U.S. borders. His stance echoed the approach favored by President Obama, who last week criticized the Arizona law and said he wants Congress to work on the issue this year.

Comprehensive immigration reform would include continuing government efforts to secure borders from illegal immigrants, as well as steps to crack down on businesses that employ them, Obama said at a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the White House.

In addition, he said, those living illegally in the United States would have to pay a penalty and any taxes they owe, learn English and "make themselves right with the law" before starting the process of gaining U.S. citizenship.

WAVING THE AMERICAN FLAG, OR THE MEXICAN - ALIPAC.us

Friends of ALIPAC,

It takes a great deal to get my blood pressure up these days after all of the horror I've witnessed due to illegal immigration and the fact our own government has been hijacked at the top!

But today, I ask you to watch and listen carefully and understand what these new stories mean for us all.

First, please do not post or circulate the protest sign that reads "We will shoot more police in Arizona till we get free?" We cannot prove that is a fake, but several of our supporting activists feel the picture is a hoax and has been altered. You can see our full discussions here and make your own determination. Our ruling is that the sign is problematic and we cannot document a source, therefore it should not be further circulated.

With that out of the way, we need to do our best to make sure everyone in America knows about and understands what just happened with two stories.

In California, students wearing clothing with American flags were sent home while students wearing Mexican flags were allowed to stay in class. It is my strong personal opinion that school administrators sent the Hispanic kids wearing American flags home because of the clear and present danger of violence against them.

The next day, many of the Mexican kids walked out to protest the insult they felt the kids wearing American flags had delivered by wearing such a "racist" symbol as the American flag.

At another school, a kid is in trouble for tearing down a Mexican flag and we are receiving word of another story where someone burned a Mexican flag in or near school.

War may be upon us in our own land and our school children may be on the front lines.

IF THESE STORIES DO NOT MAKE IT CLEAR TO OUR FELLOW AMERICANS WHAT WE FACE THEN I DO NOT KNOW WHAT WILL!

While we try not to put to much in one e-mail, because we know our busy supporters will not always read to the end, I hope you are still reading.

We regret to inform everyone that Hollywood just released a movie into theaters on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo that glorifies and encourages illegal aliens to take up arms against Americans.

While some will claim this movie is a spoof, you need to watch the trailer yourself.

The movie is about an illegal alien that gets double crossed after accepting a commission to murder an American politician that is driving illegal aliens out of our country.

The protagonists then lead an army of machete and AK-47 wielding illegal aliens in a violent uprising. In Central and South America, the machete is a symbol of violent revolt.

Many of us are greatly concerned that the introduction of this propaganda film, at this time, with the specific threat against the state of Arizona could greatly increase the chances of violent harm against Americans by illegal aliens.

Here is the trailer of the film...

GUNMEN KILL GUEST AT MEXICAN WEDDING - The Culture of Violence!

Gunmen Kill Guest, Kidnap Groom at Mexican Wedding

Michelle Ruiz
Contributor

AOL News (May 9) -- Moments after saying "I do," there was no happy ending for a bride and groom who tied the knot in Mexico's Ciudad Juarez over the weekend.

Outside the church, the couple was met by a group of gunmen who killed a wedding guest before kidnapping the groom, his best man, his brother and his uncle. Chihuahua State Attorney General's Office spokesman Carlos Gonzalez told CNN that dozens of guests looked on as one of the gunman shot the victim in the back as he fled towards the church parking lot.

There were no arrests made but officials said an investigation into the incident is underway. Cuidad Juarez is Mexico's most violent city and the site of thousands of deaths related to turf wars between battling drug cartels.

Addressing the wedding shooting, Gonzalez told CNN: "It's unclear if this was gang or drug related."

Chihuahua state prosecutor's office spokesman Arturo Sandoval also told The Associated Press that the motive for the wedding violence has not yet been determined.

Cuidad Juarez, located across from El Paso, Texas, is one of the deadliest cities in the world. Local reports said at least 870 people have been killed there this year alone and more than 5,000 have been killed since the drug wars began in late 2006.
