D.A: California Man Charged With Possession of Fentanyl, Enough ‘to Kill 12 Million People’

A suspected drug dealer in Orange County, California, has been charged with possessing enough fentanyl that could kill up to “12 million people,” according to the county District Attorney’s office.

“Alfonso Gomez-Santana, 60, of Fullerton has been charged with one felony count of sale or transport of a controlled substance and two felony counts of possession of sale with intent to sell,” per the District Attorney’s office press release on Friday.

California Highway Patrol Officers arrested Gomez-Santana on Wednesday in Fullerton near South Lemon Street and Orangethorpe Avenue and found more than four kilos of fentanyl while searching his vehicle.

When officers went to go search the suspect’s home, they discovered “20 more kilos of fentanyl, $250,000 in fentanyl pills, and 122 grams of methamphetamine.”

Despite being found with “enough fentanyl to kill 12 million people,” the suspected drug dealer only faces up to six years and eight months in prison if he is convicted on all counts.

“It is unconscionable that someone who has the ability to kill 12 million people is facing just a handful of years in jail,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer.

He continued:

Breitbart News reported in May that 107,000 Americans have died due to a drug overdose death in 2021, an increase of 15 percent. Moreover, 71,000 Americans died of a fentanyl-related overdose in 2021, whereas only 58,000 perished from the same drug a year before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Breitbart News also reported in April that border officials seized 11,200 pounds of fentanyl at the border in  Fiscal Year 2021 and have already seized 5,800 pounds of fentanyl since October 1, 2021, when Fiscal Year 2022 began, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data.

“The figures indicate that fentanyl seizures under [President Joe] Biden, last year alone, have quadrupled since Fiscal Year 2019 when [former President Donald] Trump was in office, ” per Breitbart News.

In April, California authorities in Alameda County seized up to 90 pounds of fentanyl, which was worth a total of $4.2 million.

Jane Stanford could have been saved by a fart. That, at least, is what her doctors, friends, and community accepted in 1905 when the cofounder of Stanford University spoke her last words: "This is a horrible death to die."

A physician claimed that Mrs. Stanford overate at lunch and had considerable gas, which prompted a heart attack. The president of Stanford University refused to accept that Jane’s death was unnatural. Members of the Stanford family repeated the lie that Jane died of heart failure.

Historian, Stanford University professor, and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Richard White rejects this relayed account and swaps it for one more interesting: murder. As White explores in his new book Who Killed Jane Stanford?, the philanthropist had powerful enemies. Many of them were involved in an elaborate plot to kill the heiress and seize her estate for themselves. In his detailed account of the Gilded Age mystery, White dives into the century-old cold case and at last names a killer.

Just before bed on the evening of January 14, 1905, Jane drank from a glass of Poland Spring water. She immediately detected bitterness and began to vomit. Jane called in her secretary Bertha Berner, who agreed that the water tasted peculiar. Toxicology reports showed that Jane was poisoned by strychnine, a chemical commonly found in rat poison. She survived that occasion.

To recover from the stress of the incident, Jane vacationed at the Moana Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii. On February 28, just six weeks after she was initially poisoned, Jane retired to her bedroom and drank from a glass of bicarbonate mixed with water. She immediately became ill. Jane again summoned Bertha Berner, who witnessed a series of spasms, during which the heiress declared she had again been poisoned. By the time doctors arrived, it was too late. Physicians concluded the cause of death was a lethal dose of strychnine.

Thousands of miles away in California, Stanford University officials clamored to rule the death natural. A classified murder or suicide could prohibit the university from receiving the widow’s estate—and university president David Starr Jordan couldn’t afford that risk.

It was 20 years earlier that Jane and Leland Stanford founded Stanford University. The couple established the college in memory of their son Leland Jr., who died of typhoid a year earlier. When her husband passed, the college became for Jane "the memorial of a dead son, and of a dead husband."

Jane was intimately involved in Stanford’s affairs, which, according to the author, vexed Jordan. When she questioned a faculty pick or an administrative decision, it demanded from the university president an agreeable response.

Jordan was a eugenicist who thought the French "dissolute and slovenly,' he despised southern Italians, and he thought Mexicans were ‘ignorant, superstitious, ill-nurtured, with little self-control and conception of industry or thrift.'" He also viewed Stanford as constantly overstepping her authority—but Jordan subordinated those views in exchange for the cushy title. He ignored Jane’s concerns over college management until she threatened that position. He even "said in confidence to certain students that things would be better at the University when she had passed away."

The president was no stranger to scandals, including the abrupt termination of faculty members for representing opinions contrary to the administration’s. In 1903, a professor blamed the "liar, hypocrite, and coward" Jordan for his unusual power to haphazardly hire and fire faculty members. Jane planned to terminate Jordan shortly after her February trip to Hawaii.

The control Jane sought in the university’s inner workings alarmed Jordan. She could be temperamental and selfish, and, with such a large chunk of the university’s endowment under her control, Jordan had to be strategic in their partnership. But the president wasn’t the only person close to Jane who manipulated her for money.

Jane paid well her close friend and personal secretary of 30 years, Bertha Berner, who accompanied her on many overseas travels, including that last and fatal trip to Hawaii. Berner inherited $15,000 and a home when the heiress died—and the maid was present for not one, but two instances in which her boss was poisoned.

White introduces a host of other players who likely played a part in Jane’s death: the corrupt law enforcement officers who botched the investigation, shady private detectives who ignored toxicology reports, house servants who stood to gain substantial inheritances. All of these fall short next to the killer White finally names.

Jane dedicated herself, her wealth, and her family’s memory to the university. A staunch spiritualist with Christian influence, she was "as close to Catholic as a Protestant could be." The Stanfords claim that their deceased son visited them in a vision and encouraged the couple to live for humanity and "build a university for the benefit of poor young men, so they can have the same advantages the rich have."

Jane Stanford lived for humanity. But in death, humanity deserted her. White’s investigation is a thrilling tale of Gilded Age deceit, wealth, and death. Rest assured, his conclusion is much more riveting than flatulence.

In Las Vegas, Nevada, highly modified vehicles are being used to steal tens of thousands of gallons from local gas stations. And in Greenville, South Carolina, several arrests for gas thefts have been made since January. Last week, in North Carolina last week, almost 400 gallons of gas were stolen by thieves who were able to bypass the payment system. The list goes on and on, and given that gas prices are expected to continue to rise, we’re going to see many more similar cases happening until the end of the year.

Meanwhile, on dividedness, the U.S. ranks No. 1. A Pew Research Center Survey of 20 developed nations found that Americans were the most likely to say their society was split along partisan, racial, and ethnic lines. The U.S. also reported more religious division than almost any other country surveyed. The truth is that our country is rapidly falling apart. Since the 1970s, economic inequality in the U.S. has skyrocketed, leaving many Americans living paycheck to paycheck while the nation’s top earners hoard all the gains from economic growth. It's actually been 11 years since the last federal minimum wage hike, the longest span the baseline wage has gone without an increase since it began in 1938. Since the last federal minimum wage hike — to $7.25 an hour, starting July 24, 2009 — the cost of living has shot up by 20%, while the price of essentials such as housing and health care have increased even faster. The average rent back in 2009 was about $1,132, adjusted for inflation. On top of all that, the U.S. manufacturing sector is facing a historic slowdown right now, which is quite alarming given that about 12% of the nation’s total output comes from manufacturing. And the supply chain disruptions we’ve seen so far are just a hint of the chaos we are going to witness this year. As we enter peak shipping season, shipping information company Frieghtos estimates that by August the price to ship one 40-ft container from China to the US East Coast will shoot up to more than $20,000, almost twice as high as shipping rates were in January, and a 500% increase from 2019 levels. Our living standards are decaying and, at this point, we all can see our quality of life evaporating right before our eyes. In the world’s wealthiest country, more and more people are living on the streets. Homelessness is a significant indicator of social decay. There are 750,000 Americans who are homeless on any given night, with one in five of them considered chronically homeless. Around 70% of the homeless are individuals, and families with children make up for the remaining 30%. Living without proper access to housing puts many people in very a vulnerable position, oftentimes, their lives are at risk. An examination of 20 US urban areas found that around 13,000 homeless people are victimized by disease, extreme weather, and substance abuse every year. The number of victims shot up by 77% in the five years ending in 2020. Today, the average life expectancy of a homeless person in America is just 50 years. There will be no future for us if we stay on this highly self-destructive path. The choices that we make individually and collectively as a nation are critical for the health of our society. Throughout all human history, great empires have fallen because societies have consistently made the wrong choices. So if we want to prevent the downfall of America, we must start making better choices. Survey: Rising Inflation, Gas Prices Affecting American Workers’ Ability to Cover Other Expenses

Rising inflation and gas prices are having a negative impact on American workers’ ability to cover other expenses, according to a Harris survey.

The survey found that 75 percent of hourly workers reported having challenges in paying their bills due to increased inflation. Moreover, 81 percent said that increased gas prices were hampering their ability to pay for other necessary expenditures.

Hourly workers also reported they were struggling to pay for various expenses: 49 percent said they were experiencing “difficulties” in paying their grocery bills, while 40 percent had difficulties in covering their utility costs. Thirty-four percent of respondents also said it was a challenge to meet their mortgage payments.

Increased inflation is not only hurting hourly workers in their pocketbooks, but in their well-being too, as 77 percent of respondents said that the stress of covering expenses had a “negative impact” on their health.

In order to navigate the rising cost of gas and other financial challenges, 22% of employees surveyed took out a payday loan in 2022. These struggles are further exacerbated by the fact that 35% of all hourly workers report receiving no pay increase over the past year, and this figure increases to 49% for hourly workers with an annual household income of under $50k.

The survey was conducted online by the Harris Poll and was commissioned by Daily Pay and Funding our Future. The survey polled 654 hourly workers between May 24-26 and had a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percent.

As the U.S. grapples with  40-year-high inflation under the Biden administration, an overwhelming majority of Americans (97 percent) say that inflation is either “a crisis or a problem,” while 92 percent of Americans believe gas prices are a “serious” issue.

The American Automobile Association recorded that the national average gas price was $4.908 as of June 25, which is a nearly $2 increase from a year ago.

The top 25 oil corporations made a combined $205 billion in profits in 2021. Since the beginning of 2022, the five largest oil companies—Shell, ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron and ConocoPhillips—have enjoyed a 300 percent increase in profits over the first quarter of 2021. ConocoPhillips, for example, earned profits of $4.3 billion between January and March, an increase of 375 percent over the previous year.

President Joe Biden on Thursday shunned U.S. gas and oil leaders when they met with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, instead issuing an announcement of a partnership between the federal government and states to push for offshore wind infrastructure.

Biden has been slamming the oil and gas industry, blaming them for underproducing and profiteering even as the president, since Day One in office, has done everything possible to hamper domestic production of fossil fuels.

“I didn’t know they’d get their feelings hurt that quickly,” Biden said Tuesday, calling Chevron CEO Mike Wirth and other CEOs “mildly sensitive” for their response to his criticism.

Biden said Sunday he would not meet with the oil industry executives, asserting he has administration officials to take the lead, as Breitbart News reported.

The White House announcement on the wind initiative says, in part:

Today, the White House is joining with eleven governors from up and down the East Coast to launch a new Federal-State Offshore Wind Implementation Partnership that will accelerate the growing offshore wind industry. The partnership will support efforts to provide Americans with cleaner and cheaper energy, create good-paying jobs, and make historic investments in new American energy supply chains, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and servicing.

As a first step of this Partnership, the White House and governors are announcing commitments to collaborate on expanding key elements of the offshore wind supply chain, from manufacturing facilities to port capabilities to workforce development. The Administration is also announcing steps to advance a National Offshore Wind Supply Chain Roadmap and designating offshore wind vessels as Vessels of National Interest to facilitate more offshore wind construction.

The Biden Administration claims that the deal will create thousands of jobs while his energy policies have axed thousands of jobs in the oil and gas industry.

The plan calls on National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, Granholm, Deputy Secretary of Transportation Polly Trottenberg, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Administrator Rick Spinrad.

Biden’s plan pledges to offer support to alternative energy, including wind, while working to cut off resources for the fossil fuel industry:

To ensure the development of a robust U.S. offshore wind industry and domestic supply chain, the federal and state governments jointly commit to:

• Work collaboratively to enhance the U.S. domestic manufacturing, logistics, and workforce development network to support the orderly and expeditious development of a robust U.S. offshore wind industry, across both fixed-bottom and floating technologies.

• Work together to most effectively address commonly identified high-priority gaps within the offshore wind manufacturing, logistics, and workforce network, and to facilitate regional solutions including, where possible, the use of public funds to advance these efforts.

• Engage with underserved communities, ocean users, Tribes, local governments, and other stakeholders to ensure that supply chain development provides equitable benefits and minimizes any potential adverse impacts.

• Explore aligning planned offshore wind procurements with offshore wind lease auctions.

• Support the development of a domestic fleet of offshore wind installation and service vessels.

Although the federal Energy Information Administration (EIA) touts the growth of alternative energy, including wind power, it also reports its role in the U.S. energy landscape:

The natural variation of wind speeds contributes to very different amounts of wind generation, depending on the time of day or season. Wind first ranked as the second-largest source of U.S. electricity generation for an hour in late March 2021.

On a monthly basis, we have had less wind generation in the United States than natural gas-fired generation, coal-fired generation, or nuclear generation. We do not expect wind to surpass either coal-fired or nuclear generation for any month in 2022 or 2023, based on our most recent Short-Term Energy Outlook forecast.
