Los Angeles Times columnist George Skelton floated a scenario that he thinks could cure Democrat woes across multiple elected offices: If Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) retires midterm and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) appoints Vice President Kamala Harris to her seat, then President Joe Biden can find a more appealing running mate for 2024.  

The idea, which Skelton endorsed in his article Thursday but admitted is farfetched, came from an L.A. Times reader, who sent the idea to the columnist. If the unlikely hypothetical scenario ever were to unfold, it would send shockwaves through California and national politics. 

For starters, replacing Feinstein with Harris would be a positive for Democrats on multiple fronts, noted Skelter. The 90-year-old Feinstein, whose daughter reportedly has power of attorney over her legal affairs, has appeared confused at times following her return from a health-related absence in March, in which she missed more than 90 votes. This came after the New York Times reported last summer that Democrats were struggling to keep her declining mental health under wraps.

It would also help Biden in repurposing his unpopular vice president, who has been no stranger to criticism for awkward gaffes and statements. For reference, her average approval rating on FiveThirtyEight pings at 39.5 percent, while a majority of 51.7 percent disapprove of her performance. In other words, she is 12 points underwater. From there, he could pick a Democrat seen as a better asset for a running mate. 

If Harris were to take over Feinstein’s term, which ends in 2025, and then run for reelection, it could set up a four-way race between her and Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Katie Porter (D-CA), all of whom have declared their candidacies. It would be a high-stakes contest where three of the prominent Democrats would be out of public office for at least a full election cycle. 

However, Feinstein has given no indication that she is keen on leaving her post before her term is finished. Her office only announced she would not seek reelection after Porter pressured her by launching a Senate campaign. Biden would serve as a central player in such a major shake-up, per Skelter, but persuading Feinstein would be difficult. 

“Biden would need to invite her into the Oval Office for a heart-to-heart. She has been a terrific senator with lots to be proud of, but it’s time to let go — for the country’s sake, the state’s and her own — he’d urge, speaking as a longtime senator himself and a former colleague,” Skelter wrote. 

Skelter noted that coaxing Harris out of the vice president role would be an even taller task as she “would need to be pushed — dumped.”

'For the foreseeable future': Bureaucrats urged to stay away from hideous structure in notorious drug haven

What happened: The Biden administration urged hundreds of government employees in San Francisco to stop coming to work at the Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building due to safety concerns.

• The 18-story building, which houses various federal agencies and former House speaker Pelosi's office, sits adjacent to the city's Tenderloin district, a notorious haven for drug-addled vagrants and other violent criminals.

• Pelosi reportedly raised concerns about the safety of the building's tenants, including members of her staff, in a recent meeting with the U.S. attorney's office.

What they're saying: "In light of the [disgusting and unsafe] conditions at the [Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building] we recommend employees … maximize the use of telework for the foreseeable future," wrote Cheryl Campbell, the Health and Human Services assistant secretary for administration, in an August 4 memo.

• The San Francisco Chronicle wrote that the building named after Pelosi "has long been a locus of some of the city's most intractable problems."

• "Dozens of dealers routinely plant themselves on, next to, or across the street from the property, operating in shifts as users smoke, snort, or shoot up their recent purchases," the Chronicle reported. "The property's concrete benches are an especially popular site for users to get high, socialize, or pass out."

• "The safety of workers in our federal buildings has always been a priority for Speaker Emerita Pelosi, whether in the building or on their commutes," Pelosi spokesman Aaron Bennett said in a statement. "Federal, state, and local law enforcement—in coordination with public health officials and stakeholders—are working hard to address the acute crises of fentanyl trafficking and related violence in certain areas of the city."

Crucial context: The same day Campbell's memo went out, President Joe Biden called on federal agencies to "aggressively execute" plans to return employees to the office after years of working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

• The Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building, which cost taxpayers $144 million to construct, is absolutely hideous.

Bottom line: San Francisco and other major cities run by Democrats are overrun with crime and drug-addled vagrants because Democrats are more concerned about being nice to criminals than they are about protecting the lives and livelihoods of law-abiding citizens.

Democrats, their advocacy groups, like ProPublica, and their media outlets, like the New York Times, have launched a dishonest campaign accusing conservative Supreme Court justices of being unethical.

These attacks are coming from some of the most corrupt and unethical figures and organizations in the country like ProPublica, created by the Sandler family whose greedy actions helped cause the previous recession led them to being profiled on Saturday Night Live as people who should be shot, not to mention a former Enron executive and FTX’s Sam Bankman-Fried.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi found herself in the center of a firestorm following one of her husband’s most recent stock purchases, but his stock purchases have caught the media’s attention and come under scrutiny for quite some time.

Pelosi’s latest headache ignited after her husband Paul, who owns a San Francisco investment and consulting firm, bought more than $1 million in Nvidia, a computer chip company, just weeks before a congressional vote that would provide massive subsidies to the industry.

During summer 2021, Paul cashed in on big tech shortly before the House Judiciary Committee voted to curtail the “unregulated power” of companies like Google and Amazon, Fortune reported. The move, however, wasn’t considered a threat to the companies, and the tech firms’ stock prices continued to rise.

Paul, meanwhile, had purchased 4,000 shares of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, by exercising call options a week before the vote. The call options – which give investors the right to buy shares of a company at a specific price – allowed him to snag the shares of Alphabet at $1,200 a piece as they closed that day at just over $2,500, according to Fortune. Paul earned $5.3 million on the investment at the time.

A few months before the Alphabet purchase, Paul picked up millions of dollars worth of Microsoft stock just days before the company announced a lucrative government contract.

Paul exercised call options and paid $1.95 million to buy 15,000 shares of Microsoft at a strike price of $130 on March 19, Fox Business reported. That same day, Paul paid $1.4 million for 10,000 shares valued at $140.

Microsoft announced a government contract worth nearly $22 billion to supply U.S. Army combat troops with augmented reality headsets just twelve days after Paul’s purchase, and the company’s share prices increased from about $230 to roughly $255 – or close to 11% – in the weeks following the announcement.

Ethics are for little people. And conservative Supreme Court justices. And certainly not for top Dems.
