Republican Leaders Voice Support for Re-Examining Birthright Citizenship
In a fact-paced turn of events over the past week, Republican leaders in both the House and Senate have voiced their support for examining the issue of birthright citizenship. The debate over birthright citizenship was revived nearly ten days ago when amnesty advocate Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) announced he may introduce a constitutional amendment to end the practice of automatically granting citizenship to children born in the United States regardless of the parents’ immigration status. (Politico, July 29, 2010) Graham’s statements immediately grabbed headlines and sparked furious opposition from amnesty advocates.

But despite such criticism, over the past week key Republican Leaders have echoed Graham’s desire to examine the issue. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stopped short of endorsing an amendment to the Constitution, but said “I think we ought to take a look at it — hold hearings, listen to the experts on it,” (The Hill, Aug. 2, 2010). McConnell’s statements were similar to Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ) who said he suggested to Senator Graham that “we should hold some hearings and hear first from the constitutional experts to at least tell us what the state of the law on that proposition is.” (Id.)

Other prominent Senators have voiced their support for holding hearings on birthright citizenship. Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said, “It’s very much worthy of discussion,” adding that he thought hearings are a good way to do it. “I’d like to see somebody draft an amendment, and let’s see what it says.” (Politico, Aug. 4, 2010). Meanwhile Senator John McCain (R-AZ), who is in a heated primary battle, was a little more reserved in his support, stating simply that he supports “the concept of holding hearings.” (Id.)

On the House side, Minority Leader John Boehner announced his support for studying a possible change birthright citizenship on NBC’s Meet the Press. “I think it’s worth considering,” he said. (Meet the Press transcript, Aug. 8, 2010) “[T]here is a problem. To provide an incentive for illegal immigrants to come here so that their children can be U.S. citizens does, in fact, draw more people to our country….[I]n certain parts of our country, clearly, our schools, our hospitals, are being overrun by illegal immigrants, a lot of whom came here just so their children could become U.S. citizens.”

The controversy surrounding birthright citizenship stems from one clause in the first sentence of the 14th Amendment, which reads: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.” This sentence has been interpreted to automatically grant citizenship to any child born within the territorial United States, regardless of whether their parents are tourists, business travelers, or even illegal aliens. Some scholars argue that birthright citizenship was never intended to be a blanket citizenship to the children of all persons born within the territorial United States. Their research supports the argument that the Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment intended the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” to mean those having allegiance to the United States government, not those who are merely physically located on U.S. territory. (See FAIR’s Issue Brief, April 2008). They also argue that Section 5 of the 14th Amendment, which reads, “The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article,” grants Congress broad authority to define the phrase by statute.

Whether Congress moves forward with hearings on birthright citizenship is uncertain. What is clear is that the existing interpretation of the first sentence of the 14th Amendment resulting in birthright citizenship has led to significant abuse of the U.S. immigration system. Despite the fact that their parents broke U.S. immigration laws, children of illegal aliens automatically become citizens, are eligible for benefits, and are able to petition to bring their parents into the U.S. when they reach 21. Texas alone last year had approximately 60,000 such births. (Dallas Morning News, Aug. 8, 2010). At Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, data show that the hospital handled 11,071 births last year to women who could not provide proof of U.S. citizenship – or 74 percent of the total 14,872 births at the hospital. Most of these women are believed to be in the country illegally. (Dallas Morning News, Aug. 8, 2010). There has also been a rapid growth of “birth tourism,” an industry in which companies organize pregnant women from other countries to come to the U.S. to give birth so that their children will become U.S. citizens. In April of this year, ABC News reported that data from the National Center for Health Statistics showed that the number of U.S. births to non-resident mothers rose 53 percent between 2000 and 2006. (ABC News, Apr. 14, 2010).

ICE Union Takes Unanimous Vote of No Confidence in Leadership
Documents surfaced last week showing that AFGE Council 118 ICE, the union that represents over 7,000 detention and removal agents within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), issued a vote of no-confidence in ICE Director John Morton and Assistant Director of the ICE Office of Detention and Policy and Planning, Phyllis Coven. According to a statement issued by the Union, the action reflects “the growing dissatisfaction among ICE employees and Union Leaders that Director Morton and Assistant Director Phyllis Coven have abandoned the Agency’s core mission of enforcing United States immigration laws and enforcing public safety, and have instead directed their attention to campaigning for programs and policies relating to amnesty…” (AFGE National Council 118 Letter, June 25, 2010).
In the scathing release, the ICE union also accuses Director Morton and Assistant Director Coven of:
• Dedicating “more time to immigration reforms aimed at large-scale amnesty legislation, than advising the public and Federal lawmakers of the severity of the illegal immigration problem;
• Misleading the public regarding the effectiveness of the Secure Communities program and using it as a selling point to move forward with amnesty legislation;
• Refusing to alert Congress as to the severity of the problem regarding criminal aliens and to request additional resources to provide better enforcement and support of local agencies;
• Prohibiting the majority of ERO agents from making arrests or enforcing United States immigration laws outside of the institutional (i.e. jail) setting; and
• Implementing detention reforms that have created a “resort like living conditions to criminal aliens.”
When asked about criticism of him and his agency, Morton was dismissive. "You develop a thick skin in a job like this," said Morton. "I'd imagine that for some other senior leaders in government, the day when someone calls for their resignation would be the day they'd remember throughout their career. That's just part of the territory here.'' (Washington Post, July 19, 2010). However, Janice Kephart, Director of National Security Policy at the Center for Immigration Studies, noted that a unanimous rebuke from one’s entire workforce of agents is under no circumstances a typical critique of a government official. Morton, she states, cannot do his job unless the agents can do theirs. But then again, she notes, maybe this is the point. (CIS blog, August 4, 2010)

Chief Who Supports Sanctuary Policies Gets Top ICE Job

In a laughable move, the Obama Administration has appointed a police chief who supports illegal alien sanctuary policies to oversee an immigration enforcement program that requires a partnership between federal and local authorities.
The new director for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of State and Local Coordination is Harold Hurtt, an outspoken critic of immigration enforcement on the local level. As police chief in two different cities with huge illegal alien populations—Phoenix and Houston—Hurtt enforced don’t-ask-don’t-tell immigration measures that prevented officers from inquiring about a suspects’ legal status in the U.S.
In his new post, Hurtt will get $180,000 a year to supervise outreach and communication between federal immigration officials and local law enforcement agencies. In essence, he is charged with strengthening the collaboration between local police and federal immigration officials in an effort to combat a crisis that has rocked practically every major U.S. city and many small municipalities.
Homeland Security officials are promoting Hurtt as “a respected member of the law enforcement community” who will be an “invaluable asset to ICE’s outreach and coordination efforts.” The reality is that he opposes immigration enforcement and as police chief protected the most violent of criminals. Hurtt has even testified before Congress that local police should not assist with immigration enforcement.
His pro-immigration policies enabled illegal immigrants with extensive criminal histories to murder two police officers and seriously injure another while he was chief in Phoenix and later in Houston. Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit against Hurtt on behalf of the deceased Houston officer’s wife for implementing the sanctuary policies that led to her husband’s death.
In the 2007 incident, Officer Rodney Johnson was brutally shot by a previously deported illegal immigrant during a traffic stop. The illegal alien, Juan Quintero, had an extensive criminal record and had been deported three years earlier for molesting a child. The Mexican national had also been in trouble for driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and for failing to stop and provide information after an automobile accident. When Johnson arrested him, Quintero shot him four times in the back of the head with a 9 millimeter handgun concealed in the waistband of his pants.

The real motivation for the Justice Department's lawsuit against Arizona's new immigration statute was the only one not mentioned in the department's brief: The Obama administration has no intention of enforcing the immigration laws against the majority of illegal aliens already in the country.
It is that policy alone which conflicts with SB 1070: Arizona wants to enforce the law; the Obama administration does not. Reasonable minds can differ on whether that conflict puts Arizona in violation of the Constitution's Supremacy Clause.
But what is indisputable is that the failure of the federal government to openly acknowledge the real ground for its opposition to SB 1070 has rendered incoherent not just its own public arguments against the law, but the judicial ruling which largely rubber stamps those arguments as well.
The Arizona statute affirms the power of a local police officer or sheriff's deputy to inquire into someone's immigration status, if the officer has reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally, and if doing so is practicable. Under SB 1070, such an inquiry may occur only during a lawful stop to investigate a non-immigration offense.
Both the Justice Department and U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton, in striking down most of SB 1070, couched their opposition to the statute exclusively in terms of its effect on legal, as opposed to illegal, aliens. SB 1070, Judge Bolton wrote, would impermissibly burden legal immigrants already in the country by subjecting them to unwarranted immigration checks.
There are two problems with this line of argument: First, it ignores the fact that Congress has already anticipated and approved precisely the sort of local immigration inquiries that Judge Bolton now finds unconstitutional. Second, the argument would make all immigration enforcement impossible.
In 1996, Congress banned so-called sanctuary policies, by which cities and states prohibit their employees from working with federal immigration authorities regarding illegal aliens. It was in the federal interest, Congress declared, that local and federal authorities cooperate in the "apprehension, detention or removal of [illegal] aliens."
In pursuance of that mandate, the federal government operates an immigration clearinghouse, the Law Enforcement Support Center (LESC), to provide just the sort of immigration-status information to local and state law-enforcement officials that SB 1070 seeks.
It is therefore absurd to now claim, as Judge Bolton and the Obama Administration do, that such local inquiries conflict with the federal immigration scheme. It is even more absurd to argue that the risk that a legal alien will be questioned about his immigration status makes the alleged conflict unconstitutional.
Any immigration enforcement carries the possibility that a legal alien or U.S. citizen will be stopped and questioned. The only way to guarantee that legal aliens are never asked to present their immigration papers is to suspend immigration enforcement entirely. (The same possibility of stopping innocent people for questioning applies to law enforcement generally; that possibility has never been held to invalidate the police investigative power.)
If Congress intended to create such a blanket ban on asking legal aliens for proof of legal residency, it could have revoked the 1952 law requiring aliens to carry their certificate of alien registration. Such a requirement makes sense only on the assumption that legal aliens will upon occasion be asked to prove their legal status.
Such unpersuasive reasoning suggests that something else is going on. That something is the fact that SB 1070 would have put the Obama administration in the uncomfortable position of repeatedly telling Arizona's law enforcement officers that it is not interested in detaining or deporting the illegal aliens that they have encountered in the course of their duties; the law, in other words, would have exposed the administration's de facto amnesty policy.
And SB 1070 would have shown that immigration-law enforcement can work simply by creating a deterrent to illegal entry and presence. Even before it went into operation, the Arizona law was already inducing illegal aliens to leave the state, according to news reports.
Illegal aliens are virtually absent from the Justice Department's brief or from Judge Bolton's opinion. Despite this studied avoidance, it's time to have a public debate about how much immigration enforcement this country wants and which enforcement policies--the administration's or Arizona's -- best represent the public will.

The Obama administration has asked the Supreme Court to strike down a 2007 Arizona law that punishes employers who hire illegal aliens, a law enacted by then-Governor Janet Napolitano. (Solicitor General's Amicus Curiae Brief). Called the “Legal Arizona Workers Act,” the law requires all employers in Arizona to use E-Verify and provides that the business licenses of those who hire illegal workers shall be repealed. From the date of enactment, the Chamber of Commerce and other special interest groups have been trying to undo it, attacking it through a failed ballot initiative and also through a lawsuit. Now the Chamber is asking the United States Supreme Court to hear the case (Chamber of Commerce v. Candelaria), and the Obama Administration is weighing in against the law.
To date, Arizona’s E-Verify law has been upheld by all lower courts, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Ninth Circuit, in particular, viewed it as an exercise of a state’s traditional power to regulate businesses. (San Francisco Chronicle, June 2, 2010). Obama’s Justice Department, however, disagrees. Acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal said in his filing with the Supreme Court that the lower courts were wrong to uphold the statute because federal immigration law expressly preempts any state law imposing sanctions on employers hiring illegal immigrants. Mr. Katyal argues that this is not a licensing law, but “a statute that prohibits the hiring of unauthorized aliens and uses suspension and revocation of all state-issued licenses as its ultimate sanction.” (Solicitor General's Amicus Curiae Brief, p. 10). This is the administration’s first court challenge to a state’s authority to act against illegal immigration, and could be a preview of the battle brewing over Arizona’s recent illegal immigration crackdown through SB 1070.
Napolitano has made no comment on the Department of Justice’s decision to challenge the 2007 law, but federal officials said that she has taken an active part in the debate over whether to do so. Arrests of illegal immigrant workers have dropped precipitously under President Obama, according to figures released Wednesday. Criminal arrests, administrative arrests, indictments and convictions of illegal immigrants at work sites all fell by more than 50 percent from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2009.

The figures show that Mr. Obama has made good on his pledge to shift enforcement away from going after illegal immigrant workers themselves - but at the expense of Americans' jobs, said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the Republican who compiled the numbers from the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). Mr. Smith, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said a period of economic turmoil is the wrong time to be cutting enforcement and letting illegal immigrants take jobs that Americans otherwise would hold.

He gets $518.00 each month for each child born in the USA until that child reaches 18....

He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent.

He qualifies for food stamps.

He qualifies for free (no deductible, no co-pay) health care.

His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school...often the mother brings other children not in the school along for the free breakfast...

He requires bilingual teachers and books.

He gets free bus transportation to and from school....we have to pay upwards of $300.00 per year for our children to ride the bus...

He qualifies for relief from high energy bills.

If they are, or become, aged, blind or disabled , they qualify for SSI. If qualified for SSI they can qualify for Medicaid. All of this is at the expense of the American taxpayer.

He doesn't worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance. And in California they do not smog their cars so the air is polluted by over a million more cars

Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material.

He and his family receive the equivalent of $20.00 to $30.00/hour in benefits.

Working Americans are lucky to have $5.00 or $6.00/hour left after paying their bills and his.

Most Mexican Immigrants in New Study Gave Up Jobs to Take Their Chances in U.S.

A report about the work lives of recent Mexican immigrants in seven cities across the United States suggests that they typically traded jobs in Mexico for the prospect of work here, despite serious bouts of unemployment, job instability and poor wages.
The report, released Tuesday by the Pew Hispanic Center, was based on surveys of nearly 5,000 Mexicans, most of them here illegally.
Those surveyed were seeking identity documents at Mexican consulates in New York, Atlanta and Raleigh, N.C., where recent arrivals have gravitated toward construction, hotel and restaurant jobs, and in Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Fresno, Calif., where they have been more likely to work in agriculture and manufacturing.
Unlike the stereotype of jobless Mexicans heading north, most of the immigrants had been employed in Mexico, the report found.
Once in the United States, they soon found that their illegal status was no barrier to being hired here. And though the jobs they landed, typically with help from relatives, were often unstable and their median earnings only $300 a week, that was enough to keep drawing newcomers because wages here far exceeded those in Mexico.
Among respondents to the survey, those who settled in Atlanta and Dallas were the best off, with 56 percent in each city receiving a weekly wage higher than the $300-a-week median. The worst off were in Fresno, where more than half of the survey respondents worked in agriculture and 60 percent reported earning less than $300 a week. The lowest wages were reported by women, people who spoke little or no English, and those without identification.
To some scholars of immigration, the report underlines the lack of incentives for employers to turn to a guest worker program like the one proposed by President Bush because their needs are met cheaply by illegal workers - and all without paperwork or long-term commitment.
Guest workers might instead appeal to corporations like Wal-Mart, the scholars said, where service jobs are now the target of union organizing drives.
"You can't plausibly argue that immigrant-dominated sectors have a labor shortage," said Robert Courtney Smith, a sociologist and author of "Mexican New York: Transnational Lives of New Immigrants." Instead, he said, the report and evidence of falling wages among Mexican immigrants over time point to an oversupply of vulnerable workers competing with each other.
But Brendan Flanagan, a spokesman for the National Restaurant Association, which supports a guest worker program, disagreed. "In many places it is difficult to fill jobs with domestic workers," Mr. Flanagan said. "We've seen a simple lack of applicants, regardless of what wage is offered."
Although the survey, conducted from July 2004 to January 2005, was not random or weighted to represent all Mexican immigrants, it offers a close look at a usually elusive population.
Those surveyed were not questioned directly about their immigration status, but they were asked whether they had any photo identification issued by a government agency in the United States. Slightly more than half over all, and 75 percent in New York, said they did not.
The migration is part of a historic restructuring of the Mexican economy comparable to America's industrial revolution, said Kathleen Newland, director of the Migration Policy Institute, a research organization based in Washington.

Sixty miles northeast of the sleek corporate campuses of Google Inc. and Intel Corp., housing tracts sit vacant. Factories are closed and job centers are packed with people looking for work.
Think Southern California's Inland Empire is suffering? By some measures, the inland region east of San Francisco has it just as bad.
Like Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the inland area that includes San Joaquin, Alameda and Contra Costa counties became bedroom communities for workers priced out of real estate markets closer to the coast. And just like the Inland Empire, the area was among the hardest hit by the economic downturn as buyers lost homes to foreclosure and prices plummeted.
But other factors have compounded the northern inland region's misery.
The financial crisis erased thousands of the area's banking and financial services jobs. The housing slowdown crippled dozens of manufacturers that made building supplies there. And the closure in April of California's only auto plant, in Fremont, snowballed into the shutdown of dozens of inland suppliers and the disappearance of tens of thousands of jobs.
Though some economists have predicted the technology-rich Bay Area would lead the state out of the downturn, Jeff Michael, an economist with the University of the Pacific at Stockton, says its inland areas will be among the last to recover.
"That region has been really hard hit," Michael said. "It will be very slow to emerge from the recession."
To be sure, parts of Contra Costa and Alameda counties are tied to the wealth of the Bay Area and will be helped by renewed growth in the tech sector. In San Ramon, home to Chevron Corp., the unemployment rate is just 4.7%, and in Fremont, which has an unemployment rate of 8.4%, a solar company just announced a $45-million investment. But farther inland, their eastern regions are still struggling, as is most of ailing San Joaquin County.
Housing is perhaps the biggest millstone. During the real estate boom, families that couldn't afford real estate in San Francisco headed inland, buying homes in towns such as Tracy, Manteca and Brentwood. Dwellings there could cost $500,000 less than comparable properties in the Bay Area, said Michael Locke, president and chief executive of the San Joaquin Partnership, a private economic development company. Builders rushed to put up homes in vast developments, and employment in financial services in the three counties grew by a third in just a few years.
Now, building has all but stopped. Home prices in San Joaquin County have fallen 63% since the peak median price of $451,500 in November 2005, according to MDA DataQuick. Prices in Contra Costa County are down 53% from their peak of $600,000 in April 2007. One in every 135 houses in Contra Costa County received a foreclosure filing in June 2010. In San Joaquin County, that figure is 1 in 104 — nearly double the California average.
Signs of a slowdown are everywhere. At Bethel Island, a Contra Costa County summer vacation area normally busy with tourists and fishermen, boats sit rotting in the Sacramento River. Nearby, a planned residential waterfront development has stalled. The builder completed boat docks before pulling out; an eerie remnant of the luxury once planned there. In Livermore, an Alameda County town, whole shopping developments are empty and foreclosure notices dot homes.

That's forced people such as Troy White out of work. The onetime real estate agent has been looking for a job since 2007, the year he lost his home to foreclosure. His wife, a bus driver, commutes an hour and a half to Oakland to provide the only income for their family of four.
"People say this is the most miserable place in the world," said White, standing in the hot sun outside a job center in downtown Stockton. "It's really bad out here. There ain't no jobs."
Weston Ranch, the Stockton community where White lost his home, was one of the epicenters of the California housing crash. Median home prices there dropped to $110,000 from $446,000 in a span of three years. Now foreclosures plague nearly every block. In April 2008, there were 1,003 notices of default served in the city, up two-thirds from a year earlier, according to ForeclosureRadar.com.
As in Southern California's Inland Empire, investors have taken over some of these properties, changing the texture of the neighborhood.
Standing on the front lawn of his Weston Ranch house, where rosebushes climb up trellises, resident Ruben Modesto showed a visitor the homes that had been foreclosed on in the last few years.
"One, two, three, four, five, the one on the corner makes six, seven, eight nine, 10," he said, pointing up and down the block. Across the street, a gaggle of children sat on a shopping cart. Modesto said renters, including low-income families with federal housing assistance, have moved into the neighborhood.
He's not sure whether he and his wife will be able to stay in their home. She recently lost her job, and their financial advisors have told them to walk away. They paid $450,000 for the house. It's now worth about $120,000.
But buyers are scarce. Homes much closer to employment centers such as San Francisco and San Jose have fallen to the prices Stockton enjoyed a few years ago.
"It's not a bargain if you don't have a job," said Stockton real estate broker Rudy Willey.
The unemployment rate in Stockton, the county seat of San Joaquin County, is 19.8%. It's 29% in the nearby hamlet of Garden Acres, higher than any city of its size in Southern California's Inland Empire. Closer to San Francisco, in the Contra Costa County city of Pittsburg, the unemployment rate is 18%. Some of the jobs have been lost because of closures in the manufacturing and financial services industries, traditionally strong in this area. And as the region's population cuts back on spending, stores and restaurants are also suffering.
But perhaps the biggest blow was the auto-plant shutdown. New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. — known as NUMMI — was a joint venture of General Motors Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. that employed about 4,700. By some estimates, its closure could cost the region as many as 40,000 jobs. Many inland suppliers have announced they are closing or laying off most of their workers, including Johnson Controls in Livermore, Pacific Coast Industries in Tracy and Kyoho Manufacturing California in Stockton.
"The closure of NUMMI has reduced employment in a critical sector, not just in this county, but throughout Northern California," said Bruce Kern, executive director of the East Bay Economic Development Assn. "This has created a double whammy — a reduction in the value of real estate and the loss of a critical sector providing pay."
Larry Graves lost his job after both GM and Toyota pulled out of the Fremont factory they had operated since the mid-1980s. One day last month, the 52-year-old was waiting to be interviewed at a job fair at a WorkNet center in Tracy.
"It's a little scary," he said, looking at the dozens of other people scattered around the room, each waiting nervously for a chance to be interviewed for a position as a forklift operator, administrative assistant or material handler. "There's so many people out there."
Sitting next to him, Jane King took deep breaths to stay calm. She lost her job at a cookie company in Pleasanton in November 2008 and still hasn't found work. Her husband, a machinist, is also unemployed. They moved to Manteca, just north of Tracy, to buy a home in 2000, only to watch it plummet in value.
They now owe more than it's worth. King's unemployment benefits ran out in July, and the couple and their 3-year-old daughter have no health insurance.
"I think there are a lot of people in the same boat," she said, clutching the job application.
With sales and property taxes plummeting, cash-strapped cities are hustling to attract businesses.
Like many areas, San Joaquin County has an enterprise zone. Businesses that locate there are eligible for tax breaks. Last year the county expanded its zone to 656 square miles.
Stockton attracted a power plant and a prison hospital, businesses other communities might not welcome. Gus Duran, the city's interim economic development director, said he's trying to woo other businesses by slashing permit and development fees 50%.
And Tracy's City Council has voted to develop an incentive plan to attract retailers to the half-empty West Valley Mall, where a Mervyn's closure prompted other retailers to flee. On a recent afternoon, in the darkened side of the mall that once held the Mervyn's, two teenagers groped each other on a bench near the empty stores.
Economists say the employment picture won't likely get much better until things improve in the East Bay, which supported many inland jobs. The Port of Oakland has shed jobs as cargo traffic fell; import volumes tumbled 14% between the first quarter of 2007 and the same period in 2010, according to the National Retail Federation. The region was also hit by the bankruptcy of Mervyn's, headquartered in Hayward, and the buyout of Longs Drug, based in Walnut Creek.
"Stores don't last here," said Edna Jones, a teacher sitting outside a closed Mervyn's in Newark. "You think something's open, but it's gone."
A few blocks away, Mullesa Self pushed her baby across a parking lot outside a boarded-up Dollar Tree at Mowry Crossing, a recently stalled development. She said she's been living in a nearby Motel 6 as she looks for work as a cashier. She passes the blighted development every day.
"Lately, I've been noticing things going downhill," she said. "Big-time."

Wells Fargo mortgage license is revoked
State takes action over interest dispute


Citing a pattern of overcharging borrowers, state regulators yesterday revoked the mortgage lending license of Wells Fargo, but the bank will continue to make and service loans under federal jurisdiction.
The California Department of Corporations said Wells Fargo, the state's largest mortgage lender, has been charging consumers interest for days disallowed by state regulation.
The dispute is over the period after a lender releases funds for a loan and before consumers can make use of that money, which doesn't happen until the transaction is recorded by county authorities.
California allows mortgage lenders to bill borrowers for one day of interest during this period. But often there's a lag of several days, brokers say, particularly if the loan is funded late in the work week and the loan is not recorded until the following Monday by county officials.
The daily cost of a $300,000 mortgage at 5 percent interest is about $40.
"Wells Fargo charged consumers interest on their mortgages more than one day before being recorded, an admitted violation of California law," said Demetrios Boutris, state commissioner of corporations. "If Wells Fargo is not going to abide by California's laws, it has no right to California's licenses."

Record number of Illinois families on food stamps

A report released by the Illinois Department of Human Services on Tuesday revealed that over 785,000 Illinois households—more than 1,630,000 individuals—throughout the state receive food stamps through a program known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The total represents a nearly 12 percent increase from June 2009, and state officials expect those numbers to increase steadily over the next year, according to an August 3 report in the Chicago Tribune. The data also reflects a national trend, as recent Department of Agriculture reports indicate that national levels of food stamp assistance are at an all time high, exceeding over 40 million Americans.
Nearly every county in Illinois saw a sharp increase in food stamp use over the last year. According to the IDHS’ Bureau of Research and Analysis, the southern counties of Saline, Williamson and Jackson saw their usage increase by 13.2 percent, 10.1 percent and 7.9 percent respectively. The hardest hit counties were to the north and west of Chicago, according to IDHS Director Jennifer Hrycyna.
The IDHS’s report on SNAP data also belies a much greater crisis in hunger and its attenuating social despair. Even within the IDHS report, applications were up 27 percent over the last year, signifying that perhaps more than half of those who applied for assistance did not receive it.
The Food and Research Action Center published a report in February indicating that significant sections of people entitled to food assistance do not receive services, largely due to cuts in state social services and the corresponding rise in demand. According to the report, in 2007 nearly 142,000 Chicago residents did not receive food stamps even though they were eligible.
The threshold for SNAP qualification is also absurdly low. For a family of three, a household cannot have more than $1,984 in monthly income, or $18,948 a year. The maximum monthly SNAP allowance for a family of three is $526, but this week’s IDHS report indicates that the average state payments are $296 per household. The threshold for assistance for one person is that they make no more than $1,174 per month.
Poor and working people often find themselves just outside of these SNAP thresholds. Typical, for instance, was an August 4 Associated Press report in which one woman, Alana Sykes from Rantoul, could not qualify for food stamps because her unemployment benefits put her just above the maximum threshold. Sykes, an unemployed schoolteacher and military veteran, indicated that she could no longer afford to feed herself and two children.
The problems associated with the food stamp program really only begin to paint a much bleaker picture of impending hunger epidemics and a growing social crisis throughout the state. A number of food agencies, independent of SNAP, have also reported sharp increases in demand and services. A recent study released by Feeding Illinois, an affiliate of the nation’s largest emergency food service provider, Feeding America, revealed some ominous statistics:
• Feeding Illinois food banks provided service to 1.4 million Illinois residents in 2009, roughly 1 out of every 10 people in the state.
• The agency has seen a 50-percent increase in requests for food assistance in the last two years.
• Nearly 2 million Illinois children were enrolled in a federal free lunch program during the 2009-2010 school year.
• Nearly 500,000 children—roughly one out of every seven—throughout the state are considered “food insecure.”
• 50 percent of their clients report having to choose on a monthly basis between buying food or paying for utilities or heating fuel.
Studies done by other agencies reveal further hunger problems. According to the Northern Illinois Food Bank, demand for their emergency food services has increased by one-third since 2006, to around 678,000 people. The NIFB also reported that 43 percent of their clients included households where at least one adult was fully employed. The US Department of Agriculture has also released studies indicating the 11.1 percent of all Illinois households face food insecurity, and that nearly a third of the eligible “working poor” were not participating in any food stamp program.
The hunger crisis in Illinois is a reflection of the growing crisis of global capitalism, and is bound up with increasing state unemployment, rising poverty levels, and diminished or non-existent social services. Statewide official unemployment currently stands at 10.4 percent, higher than the national average. The north-central Counties of Winnebago and Boone stand well above either average at 14.7 percent and 15.1 percent respectively. Winnebago County media outlets reported that over 30,000 residents in the area were receiving SNAP assistance.
Poverty levels in Illinois, which are acutely reflected in growing hunger, have been rising steadily throughout the state. A recent study by the Heartland Alliance indicated that 12.2 percent of Illinois residents were living in poverty, and another 16 percent were living precariously close to the poverty line (See “Report finds deepening poverty in Illinois”).
Illinois also has one of the worst home foreclosure rates in the United States, increasing 23 percent—or roughly 18,000 homes—to total nearly 78,000 houses over the last year.
At a time when poor and working people suffer increasingly dire straits, staff and funds for vital health and human services are being cut in order to make up for record budget shortfalls.
Governor Pat Quinn, who cut $1.4 billion in education and social services from the state budget on July 1, announced last week that he was cutting an additional $891 million from both areas once again. (See “Illinois budget cuts gouge education, social services”).
These cuts come in addition to studies showing that the state of Illinois has been underfunding social services for years. A report by the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability indicated, among other findings, that Illinois has underfunded human service providers by at least $4.4 billion between fiscal years 2002 and 2010.
Within the last week, Chicago officials have announced a record fiscal year 2011 budget shortfall of $654 million, exceeding last year’s record shortfall of roughly $500 million. This news was shortly followed by the announcement that Chicago’s bond rating was downgraded by both Moody’s Investor’s Service and Fitch Rating, further limiting the city’s ability to borrow funds in order to pay for social services and outstanding bills. Both investors cited, among other reasons for the downgrade, growing concerns over the city’s “rapidly depleting reserves.” Mayor Richard Daley hinted in his recent “State of the City” speech that cuts to city services may be needed in order to make up for portions of the deficit.
It is worth noting that amidst the increasing hunger and social misery in Illinois, privileged elements of the city are enjoying tremendous wealth and growth. A recent study noted that in a city with record shortfalls and growing hunger, Chicago has the third most millionaires of any US city—counting among its wealthy residents multi-millionaire President Barack Obama, who holds property there.

County Spends $600 Mil On Welfare For Illegal Immigrants

For the second consecutive year taxpayers in a single U.S. county will dish out more than half a billion dollars just to cover the welfare and food-stamp costs of illegal immigrants.
Los Angeles County, the nation’s most populous, may be in the midst of a dire financial crisis but somehow there are plenty of funds for illegal aliens. In January alone, anchor babies born to the county’s illegal immigrants collected more than $50 million in welfare benefits. At that rate the cash-strapped county will pay around $600 million this year to provide illegal aliens’ offspring with food stamps and other welfare perks.

THE EXORBITANT FIGURE DOES NOT INCLUDE THE ENORMOUS COST OF EDUCATING, MEDICALLY TREATING, OR INCARCERATING ILLEGALS ALIENS. THIS COSTS THE COUNTY AN ADDITIONAL ONE BILLION DOLLARS.

The exorbitant figure, revealed this week by a county supervisor, doesn’t even include the enormous cost of educating, medically treating or incarcerating illegal aliens in the sprawling county of about 10 million residents. Los Angeles County annually spends more than $1 billion for those combined services, including $500 million for healthcare and $350 million for public safety.
About a quarter of the county’s welfare and food stamp issuances go to parents who reside in the United States illegally and collect benefits for their anchor babies, according to the figures from the county’s Department of Social Services. In 2009 the tab ran $570 million and this year’s figure is expected to increase by several million dollars.
Illegal immigration continues to have a “catastrophic impact on Los Angeles County taxpayers,” the veteran county supervisor (Michael Antonovich) who revealed the information has said. The former fifth-grade history teacher has repeatedly come under fire from his liberal counterparts for publicizing statistics that confirm the devastation illegal immigration has had on the region. Antonovich, who has served on the board for nearly three decades, represents a portion of the county that is roughly twice the size of Rhode Island and has about 2 million residents.
His district is simply a snippet of a larger crisis. Nationwide, Americans pay around $22 billion annually to provide illegal immigrants with welfare benefits that include food assistance programs such as free school lunches in public schools, food stamps and a nutritional program (known as WIC) for low-income women and their children. Tens of billions more are spent on other social services, medical care, public education and legal costs such as incarceration and public defenders.

Anchor Babies Grab One Quarter of Welfare Dollars in LA Co

The anchor baby scam has proven lucrative for illegal aliens in Los Angeles County, at considerable cost to our own poor and downtrodden legal citizenry.

The numbers show that more than $50 million in CalWORKS benefits and food stamps for January went to children born in the United States whose parents are in the country without documentation. This represents approximately 23 percent of the total benefits under the state welfare and food stamp programs, Antonovich said.

"When you add this to $350 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for health care, the total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year -- not including the millions of dollars for education," Antonovich said.

I love children and I'm all for compassion -- smart, teach-them-to-fish compassion. But when laws, the Constitution, and enforcement allow illegal aliens (the operative word here being "illegal") to insinuate themselves into our nation and bleed us of our precious financial resources, then laws, the Constitution and enforcement need to be changed.

I am so sick and tired of people using the sales tax defense for illegals. Sales tax in Sacramento is 8.75%. I make $600 a week in gross wages. I bring home $488 a week. Thats $448 a month in taxes which equals 18.6% in taxes I pay. Not to mention I also pay sales tax on everything I buy. Lets say an illegal brings home $2000 a month and all that money is used to buy taxable products (which in real life it is not), that equals $175 he pays in sales tax a month. WHile I pay $488 in payroll taxes a month PLUS the sales tax I pay. Me = $488, ILLEGAL=$175. Does this seem fair to you? On top of all this, I do not qualify for government funded anything and have NEVER been on government funded anything including unemployment. So not only do they get to keep more of their money, they get to spend more of mine in the form of government subsidies. And even if they use a stolen SSN, they are allowed by law to claim 9 exemptions, therefore have little to no payroll taxes taken out of their paycheck. What happened to things being equal? WHy is it that the people who work hard everyday are the ones being abused. Most of the time I feel like a donkey going to work everyday with a whip cracked at my back and some illegal shouting vamanos while a bunch of illegals and their children get their free food, medical, housing from my sweat and blood. Its not fair. Equality for all I say. Like Obama says everyone needs to pay their fair share.

It is time for Corporate America to learn the three R’s. They mean: Responsibility, Respect and Repercussions.
Putting into practice the word 'Responsibility' carries the burden of accountable behavior as well as shouldering the blame when a mistake or crime has been discovered. Our US corporations must be responsible and verify their employees’ legal status. Ultimately this is their responsibility whether or not they utilize subcontractors in the course of their business operations.
Wal-Mart is a case in point. Their executives claimed they had “no idea” when confronted with the arrest of their illegal alien employees. Best known for her humor, Irma Bombeck’s children also made the same claim. She demanded, "Who ate all the cookies in the cookie jar?" Each replied, “I Dunno, mom.” Maybe an anonymous guest was responsible. Maybe the dog ate the cookies. Or, the guppy! It is time to grow up children and face the music. Claimed ignorance is not a defense in the face of the law. It makes an interesting argument for corporate America to claim ignorance when 10 million illegal aliens are supported in our country by corporations giving them jobs--while claiming, "I didn't know they were illegal aliens."
Respect for American law is crucial. Without respect for our laws, America will cease as the model of free enterprise we represent to the rest of the world. We function because of the rule of the law. These corporations enjoy their success because of our laws.
Other nations have their mandates. Mexico enforces laws that prevent Americans from involvement because it is illegal to be involved in their affairs. One is the right to own property in Mexico. American citizens do not have legal authorization from the Mexican Government to purchase property there. Mexico has laws that are respected and the United States has her laws that must be upheld here.
There are serious repercussions in America for employers that disobey U.S. law. Specific punishments under Immigration Law, Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):
In Wal-Mart’s case, three areas of this violation apply to them. The I-9 employment eligibility form was not completed. It is Wal-Mart’s responsibility to verify this documentation. It is unlawful to hire an individual for employment in the United States without complying with employment eligibility verification requirements. This is not ‘new’ news to Walmart. This corporation was aware of its subcontractor’s previous violations twice before in 1998 and 2001. Federal agents rounded up 102 illegal immigrant janitors working for Wal-Mart. Under Section 274, it is a felony to have an employer acting with reckless disregard for the legal consequences of permitting a third party to provide or introduce an illegal alien into the employer's work force. Does the "Three Strikes--You're Out" policy apply to violating employers in America? It should!
These laws are specific and written under ‘hiring felonies’ and we must demand the full legal consequences for these American corporations. Place the burden of responsibility back where it belongs. It belongs on corporate America that violates our American immigration laws by hiring and exploiting their illegal alien employees.
There are no excuses for Wal-Mart, Hormel in Austin, Minnesota, Tyson Chicken in Iowa, Quality Pork Products in Austin, Minnesota, beef processing plants in Greeley, Colorado, fast food outlets such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Taco Bells across America, paving companies in Texas and construction companies who employ illegal aliens in most major cities. Hundreds of corporations violate the law in California with over three million illegal aliens living in that state. They steal jobs from American citizens.
There were no excuses for not doing your homework or cheating on exams accepted when we attended school. "I Dunno" is not an admissible excuse in a court of law any more than Erma Bombeck accepted it as an excuse from her children.
The reason Mexico, like dozens of other Third World countries, suffers horrific corruption, chaos and misery for its citizens stems from a loss of the rule of law. Without respect and responsibility, those nations and their citizens suffer unending agony at the hands of corporate elite.

When your society sinks into an intractable quagmire? You corporation CEO's must address your responsibilities, respect and adherence to your country’s laws. It’s your country, too, for God sakes!
We cannot and will not remain a viable nation without the rule of law. Corporations must return to the three R's. Otherwise, at some point in time, America will sink into the chaos, corruption and wretchedness of nations like Mexico. When it manifests itself like the empty cookie jar for all Americans who don’t have jobs, health care or decent schooling for their kids, there is not one single corporate CEO who hired illegal aliens who can say, "I didn't know."

La Raza also received an additional $4 million in so-called 'earmarks' tucked into the 2005 Housing Bill, which our Congress passed and President Bush signed. Considering the racist agenda of La Raza, giving federal funds to this group is tantamount to the U.S. funding the Nazis in the 1930's. The comparison to the Nazi Party is well deserved. La Raza openly supports pushing all but Latino Americans out of a portion of the United States (ethnic cleansing – DO A SEARCH ON THE BLOG, OR LOS ANGELES TIMES ON MEXICAN GANGS MURDERING BLACKS IN LOS ANGELES TO “ETHNICALLY CLEANSE THEIR HOODS), they call for 'Reconquista' or the re-conquest of the American Southwest by Mexico (the re-occupation of the Sudetanland), and the establishment of 'Atzlan' which is the utopian all-Latino version of the American Southwestern states (Adolf Hitler planned to called his utopia Germania). Karl Rove was one of the keynote speakers at this year's annual National Council of La Raza Conference. The event was held in Los Angeles (the eventual capital of Atzlan). Other speakers included Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton, and the virulent racist L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The fact that Karl Rove is the President's top political adviser and addressed the group with Bush's blessing, is a strong indicator that this nation is being subverted at the very highest levels. If La Raza was a white supremacist group with equally deep pockets, the U.S. government would place them on a terrorist watch list, infiltrate them with undercover FBI agents, and subject them to constant harassment by the Internal Revenue Service. Eventually, the group's leaders would be jailed and the group itself would be rendered irrelevant. However, because La Raza is a Latino supremacist group, the Bush administration and most of Congress offer them financial support!

One of La Raza's biggest supporters is Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV). In 2001, Reid asked the Senate Appropriations Committee for $5 million to help further the racist goals of that organization. That same year, La Raza gave Sen. Reid their Capital Award for "his commitment to advance legislation priorities of the Latino community." Reid in turn praised La Raza by saying: "La Raza is like the biblical David (MEXICAN OCCUPIERS?), fighting all these Goliaths (AMERICAN PEOPLE?)."

Taxpayer funds are also funneled to La Raza through the Department of Health and Human Services, The Environmental Protection Agency, and even NASA. Tax dollars are hidden in these government agencies, earmarked to be specifically given away to La Raza. Inside the halls of Congress, the practice is known as discretionary funding...In the real world it is known as money laundering! In 2005, $7.9 million was stolen from the American taxpayers and given out to Latino-only charter schools in the form of U.S. Department of Education grants. The following is a list of a few of those schools: -La Academia Semillas del Pueblo (Los Angeles) -Atzlan Academy (Tucson, AZ) -Mexicayotl Academy (Nogales, AZ) -The Dolores Huerta Prepatory High School (Pueblo, CO) -Academia Cesar Chavez Charter School (St. Paul, MN) These schools stress Latino culture, the Spanish language, the reconquest of the American Southwest, ethnic cleansing and the establishment of the mythical Atzlan, and even Aztec math!...Again, all taught on your dime! According to the Capital Research Center, La Raza has assets well in excess of $50 million. This same group reports that La Raza spends about $1 million annually on lobbying and fundraising. Can you imagine a high-ranking member of the Roosevelt administration making a trip to Berlin to show support for the Nazi Party? Or perhaps the Congress appropriating money to the Ku Klux Klan? While those scenarios both sound absurd, the support that our elected officials are giving to the racist group known as La Raza is no different. One has to wonder, if the KKK offered extremely cheap labor to unscrupulous American businesses and potential votes to equally unscrupulous politicians...Would Congress fund whites-only charter schools?

Illegal alien migration into the United States costs American taxpayers $346 billion annually reported by the National Research Council. While employers of illegal aliens rake-in billions of dollars, the US citizens subsidize what may be called organized "Slavery in 21st Century America."

While Congress facilitates outsourcing, insourcing and offshoring of American jobs by the thousands weekly, that same Congress imports 182,000 legal immigrant monthly who need jobs. Another estimated 100,000 illegal aliens arrive each month without jobs. All those immigrants seize jobs from American citizens at slave wages.

My commute to work exceeds fifty miles but it gives me time to reflect. It is 1987 and I am an obstetrical nurse working in the crowded San Fernando Valley of California. Tonight I drive to my job in "Labor and Delivery," knowing the scenario before I arrive. Eight other nurses will battle through the night in this very busy obstetrical unit. Our patients are 99 percent pregnant illegal alien women who have broken United States immigration law to birth an American citizen child.
This will be their families' entry ticket into the United States. For them, no pesky visa applications and no waiting in line for several years like so many millions that enter this country through the front door. Pregnant Third World women have discovered that the only thing they have to do is cross the U.S.--Mexico border. The Fourteenth Amendment is their ticket.
It is now seventeen years later and things have worsened. The babies I helped deliver are older teenagers. When they turn 21, they will be eligible to bring their family members from Mexico, Central America and South America, i.e., chain migration on an ever-accelerating spinning wheel. Whole industries have now developed around abusing the Fourteenth Amendment. Pregnant Korean tourists come to the U.S. on travel visas to have their "anchor" babies. Coyotes dealing in human traffic are paid $1,500.00 to $25,000.00 per person to shuttle pregnant illegal aliens across our southern border. Our politicians and elites wink at this blatant law breaking and do nothing. The colonization of our country continues with the cooperation of our government. That means your senator and representative aid this illegal baby invasion. None dare call it treason. Most Americans mistakenly trust their politicians to do the right thing. Congressional members from every state betray that trust daily.
The Fourteenth Amendment: It's a simple document, a constitutional amendment drafted after the Civil War to assure that newly emancipated black slaves would never be denied citizenship by the States. The drafters had no idea that years later it would be used to make a mockery of our immigration laws. Alan Wall, an American journalist living in Mexico states, "An illegal alien can cross the border, have a baby five minutes later, and that baby is automatically declared a citizen of the USA automatically."
The illegal aliens don't have to go through any legal doors. They are exempt from that. They are, in fact, rewarded for disobeying U.S. laws by having their children granted automatic citizenship. In addition, the happy family is entitled to welfare benefits. And, illegal alien parents who have children born in the U.S. are seldom deported. That's why their children are called "anchor babies" - they anchor their families securely in the USA.
It doesn't have to be this way. Most European countries have done away with birthright citizenship because they experienced the same abuses we are seeing. The Irish Supreme Court recently ruled that immigrant parents could be deported even if they have an Irish child. "It was becoming common for 'single pregnant woman' to come to Ireland from countries outside the 15-nation EU, most frequently from Nigeria, to claim political asylum," states Shawn Pogatchnik, AP writer. Ireland saw a wave of immigration abuse and promptly put a stop to it. Recently, the Irish voted to end birthright citizenship. Britain and Australia both changed their citizenship laws in the 1980's for the same reasons. If you are born in Switzerland you will not automatically become a Swiss citizen. Why should Americans allow our country to be invaded by people who do not honor allegiance to our laws?
Allegiance is the key word. Senator Jacob Howard, co-author of the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, stated in 1866, "Every Person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons."
The Fourteenth Amendment states,"(A) Persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States." However a proviso limits foreigners who have babies in America. It couldn't be clearer, children of foreigners, aliens or diplomats, who are subject to the jurisdiction of their home country, are ineligible for citizenship. At the time the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified we didn't have immigration laws. One hundred and thirty eight years later we are paying for the misinterpretation of it.
Congress has the power to step in and correct this wrong, but don't hold your breath. There have been several bills dealing with this issue and most have died in committee. Except for a few brave individuals like Tom Tancredo of Colorado and Rep. Goode of Virginia, there isn't enough chutzpah on Capital Hill to fill a thimble. Where are the Thomas Jefferson's and Ben Franklin's when we need them? An important case, Hamdi vs Rumsfeld was recently heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. Yaser Hamdi was captured during the Afghanistan war fighting for the Taliban. It was later learned that he had been born in Louisiana to Saudi nationals when his father was employed as a chemical engineer on a work visa. The family subsequently moved back to Saudi Arabia where Hamdi was raised. Hamdi sued the U.S. government for holding him in a Navy stockade for two years. He demanded full rights of U.S. citizenship since by accident he happened to be born here. The U.S. government wanted Hamdi charged as a non-combatant and denied due process. Rumsfeld representing the U.S. government didn't raise this issue because he wanted to end birthright citizenship but other groups saw the possibility to finally challenge this fatal flaw in our immigration law that is wrecking havoc on our country.

One such group, Friends of Immigration Law Enforcement, submitted a 'friend of the court' or Amicus brief. They asked the Supreme Court to address the issue of whether Hamdi should be considered an American citizen at all, since at the time of his birth his parents were foreign nationals with no fealty to this nation.

The decision came down this week and just like the rest of the elite establishment in this country the U.S. Supreme Court ignored the issue of birthright citizenship except for a brief statement by Justices Scalia and Stevens stating Hamdi was a "presumed American citizen." So we live to fight another day. In the meantime the invasion/colonization of our country marches on. Amid this Presidential campaign, perhaps the most critical in our nation’s history, issues are flying like falling leaves in an October wind, piling up against each other so as to make them almost indistinguishable, one from another. The issues that often make the most ink are likely to be the least important. As a veteran observer, it strikes me that never has our government been so out of the control of the electorate with our country seemingly spiraling into anarchy. Our democracy is in crisis and no one seems to be looking at root causes.
It must seem that way to the ACLU too, since it paid for a full page ad in the August 7, 2004 The Economist which offered the following headline: “How can we fight to uphold the Rule of Law if we break the rules ourselves?”
Daily some 2000 illegal immigrants are apprehended in a 260 mile stretch of the Arizona border near Tucson. Between 1970 and 2000 over 50 million immigrants, most with little education or assets have come here, most of them illegally. While polls show the immigration reform issue is important to over 80% of Americans, neither major party has promised satisfactory consideration.
Fortunately, a new book just published outlines the issues at stake in stark, no nonsense terms which can be readily understood. These two Westerners know that “the wide open spaces” of their region and others in the US similarly perceived are not arable and that endless growth, as pushed by the globalized major corporate interests who presently have bought control of our government, is an obvious myth.

Most books can state the case, but few really offer cogent, realistic politically possible solutions. Last week, a college professor asked me, “Doesn’t this immigration topic depress you? I turned away from it because it was causing me to focus too much on the issues here in Southern California. Since I’m living in the heart of this problem, I find it depressing.”
She lives in Los Angeles. “First, I'm less optimistic than you are in that I don't think we're going to stop this massive immigration invasion,” she said. “Make no mistake. Mexico is colonizing California. No politician, except Tom Tancredo of Colorado and Charles Norwood of Georgia, seems to take the problem seriously. So, let's just say that the people are going to come and will not be stopped. Then, what can we do to make the invasion result in a sustainable society?”
“Regarding creating a live-able society,” I said. “There is no way to make it live-able. Why do you think they’re fleeing China, India and Mexico to come here? Look at Bangladesh with 129 million people in a landmass the size of Ohio. What is attractive about India’s 1.1 billion or China’s 1.3 billion? We’ll have to deal with 200 million more people by mid century. Do you know how many people that is? Do you realize we will have surpassed our ‘carrying capacity’ limits? Can you imagine the gridlock with 20 million more people living in California? That’s at least five to eight million more cars on their roads. How about air pollution, species extinction, sprawl and global warming?”
“Let’s disregard those coming realities,” she said, “and deal with what we’ll have to do with 200 million more people in the United States.”
“Okay,” I said. “What are the questions that need answering?”
“How many more schools do we need?” she said. “Should we separate the English and non-English speaking students in classes so that neither group suffers because there is no way we can teach dozens of different languages? What would be the costs? How many more hospitals do we need? How many more doctors, nurses and emergency rooms do we need? How much more infrastructure is needed to accommodate the crowds? How will we deal with the diseases they bring into our country? How much more water will we need and where will we find it? Electricity? Freeways? Housing? How many more jobs will we need to keep these masses employed? How many more preschools? How many more stores and theaters and restaurants will be needed to accommodate the massive population? How much more farmland for crops will we need? We’ve got 18 million Americans unemployed today. How will we employ our poorest citizens with a constant annual flow of two million immigrants?”
“My God,” I said, “There’s no end to what it would take to support THAT many people.”
“Not to mention that it will mean a 10-year waiting period to get into Yellowstone or Grand Canyon National Parks for one weekend of your entire life,” she said. “Beaches, lakes and rivers will burst with wall to wall people.”
“Maybe, the only way people will realize that the money they are saving by hiring illegals as well as legal immigrants is a mere pittance compared to the real costs to society if we build all the facilities needed to maintain a functioning society,” she said. “Then after the infrastructure problem is solved, what American values are we going to teach these people and expect they follow?” “What if they enclave to such a degree that they follow their ‘traditions’ and ‘values’ of their cultures?” I asked. “What if they demand female genital mutilation and subjugation of women as a matter of their cultural rights? What about honor killings, horse tripping, cock fighting, dog fighting and animal sacrifice as a daily norm?”
“But what if those immigrants voted their traditions into law?” she asked.
“We would sink into the Third World of Dark Ages,” I said. “We’d become like what they fled.”
“Is that what American citizens want?” I asked. “How far down do we have to go to accommodate the world to spiral ourselves into the abyss?”
“One thing is for sure,” she said. “Soon, you’ll pick up the phone to call a business and hear, ‘Press 1 for Spanish, press 2 for English, press 3 for Swahili, press 4 for Arabic.”
“Is that what will happen to America?” I asked. “It won’t be our country anymore. It won’t have the quality of life, standard of living or the cohesiveness of a First World country. We won’t be able to speak to one another with multiple languages.”
“My immigrant students never respond with any idea of American values beyond "freedom,” she said. “We’re becoming a group of Balkanized states that have nothing in common. The American Dream will not survive. One look at what’s happening to California will show you what’s coming to this country. Our politicians are killing this country with immigration.”
“I guess the imminent historian Arnold Toynbee was right,” I said. “An autopsy of history shows that all great nations commit suicide.”
