Obama's Millions for Fannie, Freddie Execs. But Who's Counting?
John Solomon John Solomon Thu May 26, 9:12 pm ET
NEW YORK – The Obama administration's approval of $34.4 million for six top officials, with little or no market guidance, is raising new questions about the inner workings of the failing mortgage giants. John Solomon and Julie Vorman, of the Center for Public Integrity's iWatch News, report.
Over the last two years, the Obama administration has approved a whopping $34.4 million in compensation to the top six executives of the financially troubled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgage giants, and lacks the necessary protections to ensure such compensation is even warranted.
The largesse flowed to the six executives even though the two companies they run struggle to staunch billions of dollars in losses, remain in government conservatorship, and must compensate taxpayers for assuming the companies’ liabilities during the mortgage crisis. To compensate taxpayers, Fannie and Freddie are tapping Treasury Department funds to pay required 10 percent dividends each quarter to the U.S. government.
“The need for effectiveness, integrity, and transparency in [the Federal Housing Finance Agency's] programs and operations cannot be overstated,” said Inspector General Steve Linick, a former Justice Department prosecutor confirmed by the Senate last year to watch over federal housing programs. “Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have received almost $154 billion in taxpayer funding to support the still-fragile housing market. In addition, they own or guarantee about $5.4 trillion in residential mortgage obligations.”
Fannie and Freddie, which support the housing market by buying mortgages from banks, were on the brink of collapse in September 2008 when they were taken over by the government. As conservator, the FHFA oversees operations at Fannie and Freddie as Congress works on a new housing finance blueprint that will decide the fate of the two companies.
Linick is the government’s newest watchdog for federal fraud, waste, and abuse. The FHFA’s inspector general post was created last year by Congress, and the office's first semiannual report to Congress included some details of executive compensation at Fannie and Freddie.
Linick said the FHFA rejected his recommendation that it test and independently verify the annual pay packages, which are set by the boards of Fannie and Freddie and approved by the agency in consultation with the Treasury Department.
The FHFA “lacks key controls necessary to monitor the enterprises’ ongoing executive compensation decisions under the approved packages,” the inspector general wrote. “FHFA has neither developed written procedures to evaluate the enterprises’ recommended compensation levels each year, nor required FHFA staff to verify and test independently the means by which the Enterprises calculate their recommended compensation levels.”
Further, the agency "lacks independent testing and verification of the Enterprises' submissions in support of executive compensation packages," the report said.
An FHFA spokeswoman told iWatch News the agency had no immediate comment. A Treasury Department spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.
The FHFA has defended executive pay at Fannie and Freddie in the past by saying the salaries were necessary to recruit and retain talented executives who can run big, complex companies.
The current head of Fannie Mae, while still highly paid by average American workers' standards, is earning significantly less than the $14.4 million package Daniel Mudd had as chief executive in 2006 during the peak of the housing market.
The high pay is also important to offset the short-term nature of the jobs at Fannie and Freddie, which would be phased out of business under proposals from both Republicans and Democrats, the FHFA told the inspector general this year. In a March 29 letter to the inspector general, the FHFA said under its management, Fannie and Freddie are paying an average of 40 percent less to employees than before 2008.
"We continue to review the comparability estimates of consultants hired by the Enterprises and their compensation committees. And we also review comparability data that we have purchased independently," FHFA chief economist Patrick Lawler said in the letter.
Republicans said the new report added to their concerns about Fannie and Freddie.
“Fannie and Freddie are government-sponsored enterprises, not government-sponsored enrichment programs. As long as they are backstopped by U.S. taxpayers, executives should be compensated on par with government officials. If these executives want to earn Wall Street paychecks, they should work on Wall Street,” Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said in an email to iWatchNews.
Charles Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said there was no attempt by FHFA to justify the high pay. "It makes you wonder whether the conservatorship is accomplishing anything on behalf of taxpayers," Grassley said in an email.
Another senior Republican, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Spencer Bachus of Alabama, recently introduced legislation that would suspend existing compensation packages for top executives at Fannie and Freddie. The bill, which was approved by a subcommittee on a 27-6 vote, would also put all Fannie and Freddie executives on the much lower federal payscale used by Ginnie Mae, the government-owned corporation that guarantees payments on mortgage-backed securities.
The current head of Fannie Mae, while still highly paid by average American workers' standards, is earning significantly less than the $14.4 million package Daniel Mudd had as chief executive in 2006 during the peak of the housing market.
Fannie Mae Chief Executive Michael J. Williams received a compensation package totaling $9.3 million in 2009 and 2010, according to a March report by the FHFA inspector general. That figure includes an annual salary around $900,000, a similar amount in long-term incentive awards each year, plus $2.9 million in annual deferred pay. All three types of compensation are paid in cash.
Fannie Mae’s chief financial officer, David M. Johnson, was paid $4.6 million in 2009 and 2010. The company’s general counsel, Timothy Mayopoulos, had a compensation package of $4.5 million for the two years, the inspector general said.
At Freddie Mac, Chief Executive Charles Haldeman had a two-year compensation package totaling $7.8 million in salary, incentive awards, and deferred pay. Freddie’s chief financial officer, Ross Kari, was paid $4 million and its general counsel, Robert Bostrom, took home $5.2 million, according to the inspector general.
Although none of the men were named in the report, the compensation packages were identified by each executive’s title.
Fannie and Freddie have long been criticized by Republican lawmakers, who blame the mortgage giants for the financial crisis.
An iWatch News story in January, however, found that Fannie and Freddie didn’t take as many risks and played a secondary role to Wall Street in the mortgage meltdown. Government data show mortgages financed by Wall Street from 2001 to 2008 were more than four times more likely to be seriously delinquent than mortgages backed by Fannie and Freddie.
Another source of complaints about the two companies – known as “government-sponsored enterprises” although they once traded on the New York Stock Exchange – is the soaring legal expenses of their former executives.
In February, the Republican-led House Oversight and Government Reform Committee questioned some $160 million in legal fees that taxpayers have footed since 2008 for former executives of Fannie and Freddie. FHFA’s acting director, Edward DeMarco, told lawmakers then that the government was obligated to pay legal fees to defend the former officers in lawsuits, but blamed court delays and a large amount of litigation for running up the bills.
Fannie itself is still losing money, although losses have narrowed in recent quarters. But to pay the required dividends to the U.S. government, it must borrow additional money each quarter from the Treasury Department. For the first quarter of 2011, Fannie reported a net loss of $6.5 billion, and said it will have to pay about $10 billion in dividends this year to the U.S. government.
Freddie, meanwhile, managed to report net income of $676 million for the first quarter, a big improvement from its $6.7 billion loss in the year-ago period.
Freddie paid a quarterly dividend of $1.6 billion to the U.S. government in the first quarter of 2011, and said it will owe $6.5 billion in dividends to the government for all of 2011. Freddie also said it “expects to request additional draws” from the Treasury Department in the future, mostly to pay dividends owed to the government.
On Wednesday, DeMarco told a House subcommittee that he would not ask for a cut in the hefty 10 percent dividend rate the two companies are required to pay. “Even if the dividend rate were reduced, the Enterprises would have to overcome a significant number of hurdles to exit from conservatorship without further legislative action,” DeMarco testified.
Before nominated by President Barack Obama to the FHFA inspector general job, Linick was a respected career federal prosecutor who oversaw the Justice Department’s National Procurement Fraud Task Force and also was involved in pursuing contract fraud cases related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

OBAMA'S ASSAULT ON BLACK AMERICA

OBAMA’S ASSAULT ON BLACK AMERICANS – HIS LA RAZA AGENDA

By now we all have a clear picture of who OBAMA REALLY IS. He’s a consummate performer, an actor that plays the role of sovereign, all dressed up to serve his corporate paymasters.
When Obama is not working for his criminal bankster donors, he’s pushing the LA RAZA AGENDA of open borders, no e-verify, endless “DREAM ACT” ploys for amnesty, assault on legals, such as his lawsuit against Arizona, and sabotage of our border security for the benefit of the Mexican hordes crossing our borders daily.
NO ONE IS MORE HARMED BY THE MEXICAN INVASION and OCCUPATION MORE THAN BLACK AMERICA!
When does Obama open his big mouth about the plight of BLACK AMERICANS resulting from the Mexican invasion?
Ever heard about racist Mexican gangs murdering innocent BLACK AMERICANS in gang infested Los Angeles to “ethnically cleanse” their gang hoods?

Feeling inspired but not getting hired
By Eli Saslow, Published: May 27
IN MEMPHIS — His week had begun with a graduation ceremony, a standing ovation and a walk across the stage to meet the president of the United States. Kenneth Roberson was a top-ranked student at the high school President Obama had selected as the country’s most “inspiring,” and the president had extended his hand and asked Roberson what he planned to do next. The 18-year-old thought back to his mother’s advice about making first impressions: Stand tall. Make eye contact. Smile. Be confident.
“Sir, I’m going to get a job and go to college,” Roberson told the president.
Now it was Friday afternoon, four days later, and Roberson idled with a group of fellow graduates in the empty parking lot of Booker T. Washington High, a public school surrounded by the housing projects of South Memphis. The president was gone. The commemorative banner had been packed away into storage. A school security guard had locked the main entrance. All that was left were the littered remains of green-and-white confetti on the asphalt and a shared uncertainty about what to do next.
“I need a damn job, man,” said Chris Dean, 18. “Any of y’all got something?”
“Nah,” said one.
“Nah,” said another.
“I’m still trying to get hooked up at McDonald’s,” said a third.
The group turned to Roberson, who had always been the first of his friends to get everything. He had graduated in the top five in the class and won a partial scholarship to college. He hoped to earn at least $2,000 over the summer to pay for school and buy a car that would get him there. But now, in the parking lot, he was another teenager shaking his head.
“I’m looking,” he said.
After Obama, four congressmen and a governor came here last week to congratulate these students for turning around an all-black, inner-city school and “defying the odds,” Roberson and his friends graduated into a job market where their odds are bleaker still. Even as the economy continues to improve for some, the percentage of black men with jobs last month dropped to its lowest point in 40 years. The situation is worse for teenagers, worse again in the South and worst of all in late May as graduates swell the job market.
The result for black men ages 16 to 19 is a fate that now resembles a coin toss. Of those seeking work, 54.6 percent find jobs. More than 45 percent do not.
Forty-five percent. It is a number five times the general unemployment rate and almost double the rate for teens. Economists believe that recessions are always harshest on the most vulnerable workers, who are the first to lose their jobs and the last to be rehired, and young black men have long been considered most vulnerable of all. The contributing reasons — which experts say range from education to transportation to systemic racism — are now the topic of abstract debates in the White House and on Capitol Hill.
For Roberson, the implications of 45 percent are more immediate and more personal. It means a 45 percent chance he will have to borrow money for school or risk forgoing his partial scholarship to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; a 45 percent chance that he will be stuck without a car in a house with his mother and four siblings, sleeping on a futon in the room he shares with his brother; a 45 percent chance that he will go “crazy or something,” he said, “because I hate sitting in the house and having that feeling of just waiting around and being worthless.”
Few teenagers had done more during the past four years to better their odds, and Roberson planned to carry his diploma and transcript with him while he searched. He had played varsity football and basketball, starred in the school band, and worked as a mentor for the Boys and Girls Club. He had helped his high school win the national education reform contest that brought Obama to graduation, where the president had stood on stage and assured the 155 graduates, “I couldn’t be more confident about your futures.”
“So,” Roberson wondered now, still standing in the school parking lot, “if I can’t get a job, then who can?”
He had planned to get serious about his job search on the first day of summer break, a Saturday, and he woke up at 10 and walked into the living room wearing gym shorts and slippers. His mother, Shonya Pernell, was sitting on the couch and watching TV. During the past few months, she had watched him fill out job applications at the kitchen table and obsess over the neatness of his handwriting. She knew how badly he wanted a job.
“Morning,” she said. “Are you still planning on looking today?”
“Yes, ma’am, I think I will,” he said.
“Then why don’t you go get changed?” she said, eyeing her son’s pajamas.
Roberson went to his room in search of an outfit, and Pernell turned back to the TV. Saturday was her only day off. She worked a split shift driving a city bus, leaving the house at 5 a.m., napping for a few hours around noon and then driving again until 7:30 at night. The job exhausted her, but she had been doing it for 13 years and her salary had increased to almost $40,000. “I’m not afraid of hard work,” she said.
She had given birth to Roberson when she herself was a student at Booker T. Washington — a 10th-grader who brought her baby to the school day care, went to class and then worked evenings at Pizza Hut. She graduated and eventually saved enough money to move the family out of public housing near the high school. Now they live in a small house on a dead-end road, where they share one bathroom and the kitchen doubles as a laundry room and tripled as an office. But the neighborhood is safe and the mortgage affordable. “We’re making it,” she said.
Her daily bus route up and down Union Avenue provides a glimpse into the lives of all those who weren’t — people who have slipped into the city’s growing economic underclass: the day laborers with their two-gallon water jugs who board at 6 a.m.; the job seekers heading downtown in their hopeful shirts and ties; the loud-mouthed teenagers frustrated by their place in the 45 percent; the drunks and the homeless who ride in circles all day, sapped of ambition, looking passively out the window.
To make sure her children graduated from high school, Pernell supervised their homework and enforced a 9 o’clock bedtime. Nobody in the family had ever gone to college, and she was worried about the finances. She needed all of her savings to fix the stalling engine on her 1998 Lincoln Navigator. Roberson’s tuition at UTC will be $13,000; his scholarships total at least $9,000. All Pernell knew was that they would be required to pay the remaining amount somehow, whatever it ending up being, whenever it came due.
Now Roberson walked back into the living room and stood in front of the TV. “How do I look?” he asked. He wore dark jeans and an ironed shirt with sleeves long enough to cover the tattoos on his biceps. His mother nodded in approval.
“You look like a pretty good hire to me,” she said. “Where are you headed?”
“I guess I’ll start with the fast-food places,” he said.
Pernell reached into her pocket and handed him the keys to her truck. “Remember,” she said, “it’s all about that first impression.”
Roberson drove down Elvis Presley Boulevard once without stopping to survey the possibilities, counting 16 fast-food restaurants before making a U-turn to begin his search. “Look at all these little places,” he said. “Some of them have to be hiring.” He pulled into the parking lot of Dairy Queen and walked inside. The store was empty. A middle-aged white man stood behind the counter cleaning an ice cream scoop. He wore glasses and a name tag that read “Pete.”
“How can I help you?” he asked, and Roberson smiled and walked up to the counter.
Make eye contact. Stand tall. Grip strong.
“Hi, sir,” he said. “I’m looking for a job.”
“We’re not hiring right now,” Pete said, still cleaning the scoop. The walls around him were painted pink and blue. A neon sign above the counter read “Celebrate!” Pete shrugged. “I guess it might be a good idea to fill out an application that we could keep on file,” he said.
“Okay,” Roberson said. “I’ll do that.”
He took the two-page application to a table and sat down. The restaurant was silent except for the hum of a refrigerator in the stockroom. He leaned over the paper and started printing his answers.
Starting salary: “7.25,” the minimum wage.
Date available: “Today.”
Education level: “High School graduate.”
Total hours desired each week: “50.”
Hours available. Roberson studied the question for a second, stood up and walked to the front door, where Dairy Queen displayed its daily schedule. The store opened at 9 a.m. and closed between 9 p.m. and midnight, depending on the day of the week. Roberson walked back to the table. Hours available: “Every day, from 9 a.m. until close.”
He handed the application to Pete, who thanked him and placed it in a drawer near the register, and Roberson drove two blocks to a McDonald’s. He waited for 10 minutes in line with people ordering lunch before reaching the counter, and then the manager guided him to a yellow computer marked “Apply Here.” The screen was frozen. “It does that,” the manager said. “Just give it three minutes.”
Roberson thanked him and sat down, feeling encouraged. Any place that had a special computer for job seekers must be hiring, he thought. He stared at the frozen screen for three minutes, then five, then seven. In the background, a young woman repeated her greeting at the drive-through window: “It’s a great day at McDonald’s. How can we help you?” He waited another minute. The screen was still frozen. “This is crazy,” he said, and he stood up and left.
Next he drove to Krispy Kreme, which had finished its hiring for the summer, and Burger King, which no longer kept applications in the store, and Pizza Hut, and Wendy’s, and Taco Bell.
By the time he walked into Subway, Roberson had been job searching for almost three hours. He could remember seeing only two black teenagers across the counters. Even on a grimy commercial strip with little but minimum-wage jobs, most of the workers were older, or whiter, or women. Blacks were three times as likely as whites to face unemployment in Memphis; teenagers were four times as likely as adults. The woman working at Subway was Roberson’s mother’s age, and he made his way to the counter. “Hello, ma’am,” he said. “I’m looking for a job.”
“We are accepting applications,” she said. “There is a stack of them over there against the wall.”
“Does that mean you are hiring?”
“We are accepting applications.”
“But are you hiring at this store, right now?”
“Not that I’m aware of, no. Not at this time.”
Roberson thanked her, walked past the applications without pausing and left the store. “This is a waste of time,” he said. It was his first day of summer. His girlfriend had been calling, and so had his friends. He thought that maybe an old connection from the Boys and Girls Club would hire him later to be a counselor at a summer camp. The truck was running on empty. He was done wasting gas on this.
He pulled the Navigator back onto Elvis Presley Boulevard, turned up the radio and rolled down the windows. He called his mom to tell her he was coming home. “I’ll be back in 10 minutes,” he said. Then, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a Krystal burger shop, with a red logo and a sign out front that read “Can you take the heat?” He swung the wheel into the parking lot, walked into the store and headed for the counter.
Stand tall. Be confident.
Here came another first impression for a black teenager looking for work, and maybe this would be the one that stuck.

HOW MANY JOBS HAVE THE ILLEGALS TAKEN FROM BLACK AMERICANS? YOU DO THE MATH.

“Walsh stated. Walsh said his analysis indicating there are 38 million illegal aliens in the U.S. was calculated using the conservative estimate of three illegal immigrants entering the U.S. for each one apprehended.”

Illegal alien population may be as high as 38 million

Study: Illegal alien population may be as high as 38 million A new report finds the Homeland Security Department "grossly underestimates" the number of illegal aliens living in the U.S. Homeland Security's Office of Immigration Studies released a report August 31 that estimates the number of illegal aliens residing in the U.S. is between 8 and 12 million. But the group Californians for Population Stabilization, or CAPS, has unveiled a report estimating the illegal population is actually between 20 and 38 million. Four experts, all of whom contributed to the study prepared by CAPS, discussed their findings at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington Wednesday. James Walsh, a former associate general counsel of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, said he is "appalled" that the Bush administration, lawyers on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and every Democratic presidential candidate, with the exception of Joe Biden, have no problem with sanctuary cities for illegal aliens. "Ladies and gentlemen, the sanctuary cities and the people that support them are violating the laws of the United States of America. They're violating 8 USC section 1324 and 1325, which is a felony -- [it's] a felony to aid, support, transport, shield, harbor illegal aliens," Walsh stated. Walsh said his analysis indicating there are 38 million illegal aliens in the U.S. was calculated using the conservative estimate of three illegal immigrants entering the U.S. for each one apprehended. According to Walsh, "In the United States, immigration is in a state of anarchy -- not chaos, but anarchy."

Dependence on illegal labor is the elephant in the room for the U.S. restaurant business. And experts say the Chipotle ICE investigations are a wake-up call for an industry that is one of America's biggest employers and generates over $300 billion in annual sales, according to research firm IBISWorld Inc.
In its annual report to the Securities and Exchange Commission dated February 17, 2011, Chipotle Mexican Grill revealed that it fired approximately 450 workers at 50 of its restaurants in Minnesota last year as the result of an audit by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

THIS SAME COUNTY HAS A TAX-FREE MEXICAN ECONOMY CALCULATED TO BE MORE THAN $2 BILLION PER YEAR, AND HALF THE JOBS IN LOS ANGELES ARE HELD BY ILLEGALS USING STOLEN SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS.
LOS ANGELES CITY PAYS OUT $10 MILLION PER YEAR JUST FOR MEXICAN GRAFFITI ABATEMENT, AND HAS HUNDREDS OF MEXICAN GANG MURDERS EVERY YEAR, ALL OF WHICH COST ABOUT ONE MILLION DOLLARS TO PROSECUTE BEFORE THEY END UP IN PRISON.

"California Dreamin-'Undocumented' Nirvana"

An illegal immigrant crossing the border anywhere between Nogales, Arizona and the hills east of San Diego is on a quest for "gold" far more substantial than the Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez's quest for gold five hundred years ago.  Cortez died broken and all dreams of gold died with him.

Contrast that with the illegal immigrant who is crossing over the border even as I write this.  Most likely, he's on his way to Los Angeles.  As he and his family traverse the coastal range from San Diego to Los Angeles the government has conveniently posted diamond-shaped yellow signs with the profile of two adults and a child; the sign warns drivers along the I-5 corridor to be courteous and not run them over, as they may be crossing the busy freeway in flight from a Border Patrol unit.  Note: It is far more likely that the illegal is being transported, as "cargo" behind a load of Mexican lettuce in a truck. See this:  http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/05/19/20110519mexico-migrants-in-tractor-trailers-business.html  and http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/05/19/20110519arizona-drug-smuggling-ring-arrests.html

Let's call that hypothetical family Juan, Juanita and little Jose.  Once they arrive in Los Angeles this illegal family will find a "welcome wagon" of bountiful government and community gifts just waiting for their arrival.  Their first stop will be a store front in a strip mall where, for less than a hundred bucks, they will be furnished with a fake Social Security card and a fake California Drivers license.  They will easily find housing because the Feds, championed by the ACLU, have dictated that it is "racist" to require proof of citizenship before renting your house or apartment.  Next stop will be to raid the local food bank meant to assist impoverished American citizens.  Now firmly established and "legal", Juan and Juanita, after registering little Jose in free public or charter schools, set out to secure employment, using some American citizen's Social Security number.

Juanita quickly finds a job as a hotel maid.  Her salary and tips amount to $2,000 dollars per month.  Juan, using his illegal contacts, quickly gets a construction job with a home remodelling contractor making $2,000 per month, all in cash, no benefits provided.  On his way home, Juan walks by a Home Depot and notes that illegal day workers are hanging out in the front of the store and learns that the "gringo" county government has mandated that Home Depot provide a restroom, water fountain and air conditioned picnic tables to ease the plight of illegal day laborers awaiting a "pickup".  (Google: Home Depots in Los Angeles ordered to install Day Labor rest facilities, I swear it is true!).  http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,286944,00.html

As Juan and Juanita become more acclimated to their new home country, they quickly learn from their illegal neighbors that there are at least two dozen taxpayer funded financial assistance programs available where the question of citizenship is verboten.  Their neighbors also recommend that Juanita get pregnant right away for that is the route for the real "mother lode" of benefits.  It gives the family access to the WIC program, welfare, free medical care under the Medicaid program, racial and economic preferences for low cost university tuition programs and a whole host of taxpayer give-aways.

Soon a year has passed and Juan and Juanita have raked in tens of thousands of good old American dollars.  While during a visit to a Western Union office to send money back to family in Mexico, Juan and Juanita learn from the Western Union operator that there is more "gold" to be had from Uncle Sam; "go over to that Hispanic owned tax office over there", they are urged.  "they will file your tax returns using a W7 (INIT) non-citizen tax filing".  The IRS will then return to you all of your payroll taxes and, as a bonus, will send you a check for thousands of dollars as a Child Tax Credit for little Jose.  You'll also get more money from an  Earned Income Credit because the IRS only knows about Juanita's salary" (wink, wink).

Juan, a little cautious, says "won't the IRS report us to ICE?".  "No way!", says their advisor.  By federal law the IRS is not allowed to report tax information or your address to ICE".

So Juan and Juanita and little Jose are living the good life indeed!  Between Juan's tax-free salary and Juanita's taxable salary and financial freebies from state programs and food banks and  other goody give-aways, Juan and Juanita and little Jose are pulling in over $5,000 dollars per month and don't know what to do with all the money!

After buying a late model SUV, Juan and Juanita are cruising in high style.  Oh sure, Juan's driving is a little erratic since he hails from a small Mexican village and has no driving experience.  His new found illegal neighbors advise him not to be crazy enough to waste money on car insurance.  Very expensive they warn!  So Juan drives L.A. and truly hopes he doesn't have an accident, or god forbid, run over someone due to his driving deficiencies.  But he has now been trained to drive away from any accident because he knows that will surely get his SUV impounded and he'll be pursued in court for human and property damages.

Soon Juanita is pregnant and, as the family awaits the "mother lode" of benefits awaiting them upon the arrival of a "real American citizen", they decide to buy a home.  Soon they learn that the State of California will actually give them $40,000 dollars toward the purchase of a home!  (Google it; it's true!)  Juan and Juanita carefully select a California city that has declared itself a "sanctuary city", which denotes city governments that refuse to comply with E-Verify laws, illegal federal arrest warrants, and vows to protect the poor "undocumented immigrant" at all costs!  http://www.sanctuarycities.info/sanctuary_state_california.htm

Now permanently ensconced in the welcoming community and enjoying the advantages of tax evasion, enriched by dozens of free federal and state social service programs, enriched further by IRS Child and Family tax credits, Juan and Juanita and little Jose are literally rolling in abundance!

Then, Juan and Juanita and little Jose hear about these "radical" gringos who are demanding that they be deported!  Juan and Juanita are very angry!  Who wouldn't be?  They have a huge investment in the continuance of the gravy train and their very wealthy quality of life is threatened!  "By God, we'll take to the streets!" cried Juan and Juanita.  "We'll march by the tens of thousands through the streets of L.A!"   "We'll scare the hell out of those gringos and we'll eventually get amnesty and the gravy train will roll on!"

"And if that doesn't work, we'll just call anyone who opposes illegal immigration, a racist!"...that'll do the trick.  Their mind at ease, Juan and Juanita crank up the mariachi music another notch and lean back and smile.  Ah "California Dreamin!".

One tragic thing about this book is that it was written in 2003. Since then the Mexican occupation has doubled. Welfare to illegals is up to $20 BILLION in California. Welfare to illegals in sanctuary city Los Angeles is past $600 million per year, while Mexican gangs murder all over the state. Yet the lifer-politicians continue to fight for open borders, more perks for illegals, and their illegal votes!

READER’S REVIEW (source: AMAZON)
If you don't understand something or disagree with a concept then the best way to conceal your ignorance or discredit the idea is to call it "racist". Dr. Hanson did not have to go very far out on a limb to make the point that non assimilation of Chicanos to American culture is divisive and destructive - and that it is the new immigrant that is failing to adapt. Great book, on point and very timely.

*Starred Review*
Classics professor Hanson is also, like generations of his family before him, a fruit farmer in California's central valley. He has employed immigrants, seen them flood his community during the last 30 years of mass flight from Mexico, and endured the crime associated with illegal immigrants. Hanson is immensely sympathetic to poor Mexicans, however, and the most powerful chapter here outlines the harried life of the illegal alien. But he hates to see the ordered culture in which he grew up drowned by an alien inundation whose undeserving beneficiaries are Mexico's kleptocratic rulers, for whom an open border is a safety valve expelling the potential for democratic change. The four solutions to the mess that Hanson enumerates include continuing de facto open borders but insisting on rapid acculturation; patrolling the border effectively and reducing legal immigration; imposing "sweeping restrictions on immigration" and ending Mexican chauvinism in the U.S.; and allowing present policies to make California increasingly mirror an unreformed Mexico. Hanson thinks that the U.S. "still need not do everything right" to prevent social collapse in the Southwest and that the totalitarian uniformity of valueless mass culture may soften that collapse. He also sees very clearly what has brought this crisis on: the American globalist ideology's lust for cheap labor and emphasis on "raw inclusiveness" instead of "standards and taste."

REVIEW 1
This review is from: Mexifornia: A State of Becoming (Hardcover)
This book shows how Mexico sends their poor to America to work, so they don't have to improve their own country, and how we use these people for cheap labor so that we can sell things for less. It's a deal made between the two countries. The trouble is, it's not what American citizens want. The "servants of the people", the representatives, are not listening to us, so it's always exciting to read something that really tells it like it is.
This book is written from the viewpoint of someone who actually lives with these Mexican immigrants. The rich people who want to use them in their businesses for cheap labor don't live with them; the liberal elites who push for them to get amnesty don't live with them. This guy lives among them, and knows the problems first hand, and as I suspected, there are many, and they're not pretty.
He writes very bluntly about the problems, but not without sympathy for the Mexican immigrants whose own country won't take care of them. With all the new books out and the discussions going on about legal and illegal immigration, and what the American people want, I'm hoping that these problems will be solved. This book is one of the best on the subject, because it is written from a viewpoint of personal experience.

REVIEW 2
Victor Hanson combines scholarship (Professor at Cal State) with personal experience (life long resident and farmer in central CA. who has Mexican-American family and friends) to present a thoughtful look at the illegal Mexican immigration crisis. Hanson argues that the reason for this crisis is that both ends of the political spectrum have vested interests in continuing the unabated entry of illegal Mexicans. Republicans wish to placate business interests with cheap labor and Democrats hope for a future electoral base. Hanson further explains that this wave is not like the earlier waves of Polish, Jewish, or Italian immigration which was of a fixed duration and where the connection of the new immigrant to the Homeland was more thoroughly severed.
This book is well written and to the point (approx. 140 pages). I have also seen Victor Hanson on several political talk shows. He is well spoken and mild mannered which is a welcome relief from the cacophonous diatribe we too often get on cable news channels.

REVIEW 3
As one who shares the author's ethnic, cultural and geographical heritage, I thought Hanson did a marvelous job of assessing California's major social issue, and one of America's primary problems. Like Hanson, I was born and reared in Fresno County, albeit some 25 miles from his native Selma. I can attest to the accuracy of his description of Selma and the Central Valley in the 1950's.
As a child, my associates included Hispanics; as a teenager working in the fig and peach orchards, my fellow workers were Hispanic. During my professional career, I have hired and promoted many Hispanics.
Hanson's Scandinavian ancestors (from Sweden) and mine (from Denmark) came to America legally and without speaking English, but they succeeded--without bilingual classes, welfare, government subsidies, or that phenomenon known as "affirmative action", which is being rapidly unmasked as nothing, more or less, than "reverse discrimination". Hanson deftly exposes the race industry as an amalgam of organizations and individuals who are quick to attack the Anglo for any slight, either real or imagined, but who, in the long run, seem not to do much for those whom they purport to serve.
As a criminologist, I am well aware of the violence committed by Hispanic Gangs, and the fact that those gangsters who do not wind up in the morgue soon become expensive inmates in our overcrowded prison system, costing taxpayers some $25k per year each. I am equally aware of the many outstanding Hispanic officers, prosecutors, and judges with whom I've worked.
Hanson has eloquently described the failure of our educational programs to work toward an assimilated America, as well as the failure of the "separatists" in the race industry.
The one failure which, to my surprise, he did not identify is that of our elected officials who establish public policy. When Hanson and I were youngsters/young men in the Central Valley, the politicians seemed to act in the best interests of their constituencies. Today,by and large, our politicians have little integrity, but rather pander incessantly to special interests which, in turn, provide them with campaign funds, endorsements, and precinct workers. It is common knowledge that, in Sacramento, legislative votes are "for sale" almost daily. Until we can restore some integrity among our public officials, we will not move toward a better California--better for Hispanics, Anglos, African Americans, Asians, and all others!
Except for his failure to discuss the lack of integrity among many of our elected officials, Hanson has done an admirable job. Mexifornia should be on the "must read" list of all who are concerned about the future of Californians, nothwithstanding the color of their skins!

LA RAZA is the virulently racist political party for ILLEGALS (only Mexicans) and the corporations that benefit from illegals, and the employers of illegals. IT IS ILLEGAL TO HIRE AN ILLEGAL.

LA RAZA IS THE MEXICAN FASCIST PARTY of AMERICA and has contempt for AMERICANS, AMERICAN LAWS, AMERICAN LANGUAGE, AMERICAN BORDERS, and the AMERICAN FLAG.

However LA RAZA does like the AMERICAN WELFARE SYSTEM. The welfare system in the country is so good that Mexico has dumped 38 million of their poor, illiterate , criminal and frequently pregnant over our border.
