Teenagers have been involved in fights with knives for a very long time, activist and Black Lives Matter supporter Bree Newsome tweeted Tuesday.

“Teenagers have been having fights including fights involving knives for eons. We do not need police to address these situations by showing up to the scene & using a weapon against one of the teenagers. Y’all need help. I mean that sincerely,” she wrote:

Newsome’s comments came after the Columbus Division of Police released bodycam footage showing the shooting Tuesday of a black teenager who appeared to be armed with a knife.

“The video appears to show the girl fighting with another girl as the officer opens fire,” Breitbart News reported, adding a knife was seen in the teen’s hand as she seemingly tried to stab the girl wearing pink.

WARNING – GRAPHIC VIDEO:

During Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s the ReidOut, host Joy Reid spoke about the fatal police shooting of Ma’Khia Bryant, saying she remembered fights at school where a student had a knife “and teachers were able to defuse that, and they didn’t have guns.”

In a subsequent post, Newsome said people “should be frightened that the ruling white elite have done such a thoroughly successful job of not only disconnecting us from the means of basic self-sufficiency but also convincing us we need armed white officers to manage our children & communities”:

According to her website, Newsome is an artist who garnered national attention in 2015 when she climbed the flagpole at the South Carolina Capitol building and brought down the confederate flag.

Twitter users responded with criticism to Newsome’s tweet regarding teenage knife fights.

“We usually like your takes. Not this time. That girl had a big knife and was about to use it forcefully. Sad situation all around. But the cop (this time!) made a snap decision that saved the girl in pink,” one person wrote.

“‘People have been murdering other people for hundreds of years. We don’t need the police to intervene or interfere in a long standing tradition we have had in our society.’ You are an extremist,” another commented.

BLM Protesters Shutdown Oklahoma Legislature amid Protest Bill Debate

Dozens of Black Lives Matter protesters marched into the Oklahoma House of Representatives chamber on Wednesday to stop the debate of several bills being debated. The marchers shut down the session forcing the House and Senate to lock their chambers.

More than two dozen Black Lives Matter protesters swarmed into the Oklahoma House of Representatives chamber on Wednesday, the Daily Mail reported. Marchers loudly chanted their protest of several bills including one designed to protect people being attacked in their vehicles during protests.

Officials with the Oklahoma House and Senate locked their chambers to re-establish order after security cleared the protesters.

Protesters marched against bills being considered by the legislature including one that protects drivers from being attacked by protesters blocking the roadway. The bill, HB1674 ENR.PDF (state.ok.us), now passed by the legislature and signed by the governor, provides protection from lawsuits against or prosecution of a driver who unintentionally strikes protesters with their cars during protests. The bill also increases penalties for blocking roadways during protests, Fox News reported.

Marchers were also angry over what they perceive as anti-trans legislation and a bill to protect law enforcement and their families from “doxxing.”

Oklahoma state troopers used a K-9 through the House gallery “to make certain nothing was left behind” by the protesters, KOCO’s Dillon Richards tweeted.

Governor Kevin Stitt signed the bill on Wednesday, The Oklahoman reported.

“This is an important protection for citizens who are just trying to get out of a bad situation,” State Representative Kevin West (R-Moore) told the local newspaper. “When fleeing an unlawful riot, they should not face threat of prosecution for trying to protect themselves, their families or their property.”

Cornel West: Biden ‘Cheapened’ Black Life, Has ‘Blood on His Hands’

Following the guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial, Harvard Divinity School philosophy professor Cornel West appeared Tuesday evening on the Mehdi Hasan Show and accused President Joe Biden of having “blood on his hands” for past statements as well as being “one of the architects of mass incarceration.”

Asked whether the verdict regarding George Floyd’s death is “as historic as the incident that surrounded it,” West replied it depended on what follows.

“We got to see what kind of follow-through we have,” he said. “The very fact that they have a public lynching the whole world sees and you send the policeman to jail, you know that’s not worthy of breakdancing, brother. That’s one plus one equals two.”

Addressing President Biden, West stated that despite “wonderful” accomplishments, the president still has “blood on his hands.”

“[Biden’s] done some wonderful things in terms of relief deals and infrastructure and Yemen and Afghanistan, but you know he’s got blood on his hands when it comes to being one of the architects of mass incarceration,” he said.

“It was his rhetoric November 18th, 1994, when he said people who look like me, people who look like George Floyd, he said ‘he’s a predator’; ‘they’re beyond, beyond reform’; ‘throw them in jail and throw the keys away,’” he continued.

“Well, you see that cheapened black life,” he said. “That has contributed to the attitude of some of the police.”

West added that Biden can still change, just as others have.

“He can change, that’s true,” he said. “[Former President] LBJ [Lyndon Baines Johnson] changed. White supremacists from Jim Crow Texas became a major force for good against white supremacy. I hope brother Biden does what LBJ did.”

Noting Biden’s past role as vice president under President Barack Obama, West claimed the current situation is different.

“Because when he’s VP under a black president, black Attorney General, and black [Secretary of] Homeland Security, black folks still got shot,” he said. “We still got shot down. Not one policeman went to jail, for the most part. So we’ll have to see if he follows through.”

West went on to describe the “deeper” challenge of tackling “the system.”

“The deeper challenge though, brother, is whether the system itself can be reformed,” he said.

“If it’s shot through with so much white supremacist rot, then that means you might have an isolated incident in which a policeman goes to jail. But for the most part, it is chronic. It is systemic,” he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, both President Biden as well as Vice President Kamala Harris voiced similar concerns about the country’s need for an extensive overhaul.

“It was a murder in the full light of day, and it ripped the blinders off for the whole world to see the systemic racism … a stain on our nation’s soul,” Biden said in a speech addressing the nation following the verdict.

“This takes acknowledging and confronting head-on — systemic racism and the racial disparities that exist in policing and the justice system more broadly,” he added.

Vice President Harris recalled the “long history of systemic racism” in America, where black people were treated “throughout the course of our history as less than human.”

Last week, speaking on CNN’s Tonight, West declared that American police “have been out of control since the slave patrol.”

“There’s thousands of black people who have been shot down by the police, male and female, children and grandchildren,” he added.
