President Joe Biden’s nominee for Pentagon policy chief is a vocal opponent of sending U.S. military personnel to address the southern border crisis, a position that could pit him against Democratic senators from border states during his confirmation vote.

Colin Kahl called the Trump administration’s decision in 2018 to deploy troops to the southern border a "dangerous precedent" and a "stunt," and called on then-secretary of defense James Mattis to resign rather than carry out the order. The troops, who were sent to support Border Patrol with monitoring and intelligence operations, have remained at the border under the Biden administration.

On social media, Kahl repeatedly claimed that security problems at the border in 2018 and 2019 were "a fake crisis," "made up," and "bogus." He also mocked "the phony terrorism threat Team Trump likes to talk about on the southern border."

Kahl’s comments put him at odds with Arizona Democratic senator Kyrsten Sinema, who urged the Biden administration to pour more federal resources into the growing security crisis. Border Patrol officials have been struggling to stem the massive tide of migrants, which has spiked to the highest number in two decades under the Biden administration.

"Sending US troops to head off a few thousand impoverished migrants fleeing violence (& still nearly 1K miles from the US border) is a stunt. But not a cheap one," Kahl tweeted in 2018, as a caravan of 4,000 migrants was descending on the southern border. "It’ll cost millions & tie down troops & resources that could be used to address real threats."

Kahl argued the deployment set a "dangerous precedent" and that Mattis should step down rather than carry it out.

"If Mattis doesn’t believe the caravan of a few thousand people seeking asylum is a threat that warrants sending 5,000 troops to the border, he should say so & resign. His participation in this stunt sets a dangerous precedent," wrote Kahl.

Sinema was a proponent of the Trump administration’s decision to deploy troops to the border in 2018. "I’ve long supported having additional support on the border because our men and women who are keeping our border safe and secure do need help and support to do that," Sinema told KTAR News in October 2018.

The office of Sinema did not return a request for comment.

Former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tom Homan, who is now a fellow at the Immigration Reform Law Institute, said Kahl’s views were troubling considering the fact that he would be in charge of policy at the Department of Defense.

"[Kahl] was against building the wall, he was against sending troops in order to stem the flow," said Homan. "The border crisis creates a national security crisis."

Troops are expected to remain at the border until at least September 2021, although the Department of Homeland Security "anticipates needing at least the current amount of [Department of Defense] support for the next three to five years, possibly more," according to a February report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Kahl also mocked Trump for holding an emergency border security meeting on Christmas Eve in 2018, calling the issue "made up."

"Trump is reportedly spending Christmas Eve hosting a meeting on the border security crisis and tracking Santa Clause on military radar. One of those issues is made up…and the other is Santa," quipped Kahl on Twitter on Dec. 24, 2018.

In January 2019, Kahl claimed that "actual trends & facts show that Trump’s claims of a border crisis are bogus. Illegal immigration is lower than it was a few decades ago; most drugs pass through points of entry, not the gaps a wall would fill; & immigrants aren’t causing a crime wave."

In another 2019 tweet, Kahl complained that Trump was ignoring the "real crisis" of climate change to address the "fake crisis at the border."

"As climate change, a real crisis, increasingly fuels more intense hurricanes and forest fires, Trump considers diverting storm and fire aid to fund a wall to address a fake crisis at the border," wrote Kahl.

He also dismissed concerns about terrorism at the southern border.

"Remember, unlike the phony terrorism threat Team Trump likes to talk about on the southern border, most suspected terrorists attempt to enter our country via airports. That is why T.S.A. was stood up after 9/11," wrote Kahl in January 2019.

Neither Kahl nor the White House returned requests for comment.

Analysis: 1.2M Illegal Aliens Projected to Reach Southern Border this Year

More than a million illegal aliens could arrive at the United States-Mexico border this year, according to projection analysis.

Princeton Policy Advisor Steven Kopits projects that federal immigration officials could encounter about 1.2 million illegal aliens by the end of 2021 if current illegal immigration levels continue as a result of President Joe Biden’s policies.

The analysis comes after federal immigration officials apprehended nearly 170,000 border crossers including more than 18,600 UACs, nearly 53,000 family units, and nearly 97,000 single adults.

“At the current pace, apprehensions for calendar year 2021 could be forecast at 1.2 million, following the precedents of 2005 and 2006,” Kopits writes:

As a result, barring a major modification of Biden administration policy, we might expect a level of illegal immigration this year not seen since the Great Recession. The situation is fairly described as a border crisis and a rolling policy disaster. [Emphasis added]

The Biden administration has created pipelines for illegal aliens and border crossers.

At the border, tens of thousands of border crossers are being released into the nation’s interior while illegal aliens already living in the U.S. have nearly no chance of being deported unless they have been recently convicted of an aggravated felony.

An AP-NORC poll released late last month revealed that the majority of Americans disapprove of the way Biden is handling the southern border and interior immigration enforcement. About 55 percent of American adults said they disapprove of Biden’s border agenda. and 56 percent said they disapprove of his immigration agenda thus far.

Paul Gosar: Joe Biden ‘Recklessly’ Wasting Taxpayer Money by Halting Border Wall Construction

President Joe Biden is violating federal directives imposed by Congress by halting construction of border wall along the United States-Mexico border, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) says.

One of Biden’s first executive orders halted construction of the border wall which was funded by the Trump administration in an effort to help reduce illegal immigration.
This month, reports circulated the Biden administration is considering restarting border wall construction to fill in “gaps” in the barrier. The southern border is nearly 2,000-miles long — the majority of which has little-to-no border wall.

In a letter to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which is investigating whether Biden illegally ordered a halt to construction, Gosar writes Biden did violate federal directives via Congress because the funding is already allocated to the infrastructure project.

“In my view, the Biden administration is in violation of congressional directives to build the border wall,” Gosar writes to GAO officials:

Mr. Biden, by order, stopped all construction and ordered the federal subcontractors to cease and desist. This reckless maneuver prevented contractors from demobilizing in an orderly fashion, thus wasting taxpayer dollars. My constituents and the greater American public do not deserve for their hard-earned incomes to be wasted by virtue of bureaucratic failure.

The wall panel segments, which idly lay in stacks due to the haphazard order, are expensive government property paid for by taxpayers. The wall itself is estimated to cost $20 million per mile.

These unused border materials are not only an ineffecient and purposeless waste of taxpayer dollars, but are directly contributing to an avoidable border crisis which current Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently disclosed as the worst the situation has been in 20 years. Therefore, I encourage the GAO to review this matter and make arrangements to inventory the segment and assign security details to proect these federal assets.

Biden’s decision to halt construction cost American taxpayers about $6 million a day, an exclusive Breitbart News report revealed. About $1.4 billion in funding for the border wall was allocated by Congress last year.

Former Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Director Mark Morgan said Biden’s halt to construction killed about 5,000 construction jobs as well as other jobs in the steel, concrete, and technology industries.

As Biden halted border wall construction, illegal immigration skyrocketed at the U.S.-Mexico border.

In March, federal immigration officials apprehended nearly 170,000 border crossers including more than 18,600 UACs, nearly 53,000 family units, and nearly 97,000 single adults. The surge in illegal immigration under Biden marks a 72 percent increase in a single month and 243 percent increased compared to March 2020.

Breitbart News exclusively reported about 155,000 illegal aliens have successfully crossed into the U.S. since October 2020 — roughly 1,500 “got-aways” every day.

Biden Releases Nearly 42K Border Crossers into U.S. Since Taking Office

President Joe Biden’s administration has released nearly 42,000 border crossers into the United States interior since the former vice president took office on January 20, internal data obtained by Breitbart News reveals.

Almost immediately after taking office, Biden restarted the Catch and Release process whereby border crossers are apprehended and released into the nation’s interior by ending the Remain in Mexico program and canceling U.S. cooperative asylum agreements with Central America.

As of April 10, according to internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) data reviewed by Breitbart News, the Biden administration has released more than 31,000 border crossers and nearly 11,000 family units into the U.S. interior since January 23.

These totals only include border crossers released by Border Patrol into the U.S. interior and do not include likely hundreds to potentially thousands more released by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

The overwhelming majority of border crossers are being released into Texas communities near sectors in the Rio Grande Valley, Del Rio, and El Paso, Texas. Near the Rio Grande Valley sector, alone, the data shows that close to 18,000 border crossers have been released since January 23 as well as more than 72,000 family units.

In Yuma, Arizona, with a population of 96,350 residents, more than 2,300 border crossers have been released by the Biden administration and more than 560 family units.

As Breitbart News has reported, border crossers released into the U.S. interior are oftentimes paroled into the nation. The parole process allows border crossers to apply for one-year work permits so they can take American jobs while awaiting court hearings.

The mass release of border crossers has also coincided with Biden’s “sanctuary country” orders that are preventing most interior immigration enforcement by ICE agents. Biden’s Catch and Release pipeline, coupled with his sanctuary country orders, have transformed the southern border such that border crossers are unlikely to be deported once released into the U.S. interior.

New analysis projects that 1.2 million illegal aliens will arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border by the end of the year — an illegal immigration surge not seen since the Great Recession.

Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents found a group of migrants packed into three grain-hopper railcars near Uvalde, Texas. Migrants attempting to sneak past Border Patrol agents frequently risk injury or death by utilizing railcars for transportation into the U.S. interior after illegally crossing the border from Mexico.

Uvalde Station Border Patrol agents conducted a search of a train on Friday and found a group of migrants hiding in three railcars, according to a tweet by Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Austin Skero.

The agents found the migrants packed into three grain hoppers in what Skero described as dangerous and life-threatening conditions.

“Our agents routinely discover migrants that have sustained severe injuries from jumping on and off moving railcars,” Skero said in a Twitter message.

About a month ago, Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents found a group of 16 migrants locked inside a conex box loaded on a railcar near Hebbronville, Texas.

The agents conducted an immigration search on a train near Hebbronville, approximately 50 miles inland from the U.S.-Mexico Border. During the search, the agents found 16 migrants.

“This dangerous method of illegal entry into the United States can result in serious injury or death,” Laredo Sector Border Patrol officials said in a written statement. “The Laredo Sector Border Patrol continues to warn against the dangers of people crossing illegally into the United States through dangerous and hazardous means.”
