Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Tuesday called on the National Basketball Association to force Golden State Warriors part-owner Chamath Palihapitiya to sell his stake in the team after he claimed “nobody cares” about Communist China’s genocide of the Uyghurs in the country’s Xinjiang region.

“Woke CEO Chamath Palihapitiya said no one cares about the Chinese Communist Party’s mass enslavement, torture, and rape of religious minorities. He may be so callous that he doesn’t care about genocide, but the American people do,” Cotton said in a statement.

“The NBA has investigated owners and forced a sale after outrageous comments before, and it even moved the All-Star game to protest a North Carolina law saying boys and girls shouldn’t use the same bathroom. The league will prove itself greedy, spineless, and hypocritical if it doesn’t force Palihapitiya to sell his interest in the Warriors,” the lawmaker concluded.

Palihapitiya set off a firestorm this week when he declared that he did not care about the industrial-scale persecution of the Uyghurs.

Breitbart News previously reported:

During his All-In podcast interview, Palihapitiya waved off concerns about China’s ongoing genocide against the Uyghurs, saying, “Nobody cares about what’s happening to the Uyghurs.”

Palihapitiya, the CEO of Societal Capital which boasts that its call is “solving the world’s hardest problems,” shocked podcast host David Sacks when he dismissed concerns about the enslavement of millions of Chinese Uyghurs because he feels no one cares about them. Palihapitiya went on to add that he has other priorities to worry about.

In addition to being a part-owner of the Warriors and a venture capitalist, Palihapitiya is also a major donor to the Democrat Party. He donated over $1 million to Democrats in the previous election cycle, including a $250,000 check to the Biden Victory Fund.

Palihapitiya made headlines last year when he teased a potential recall challenge to California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) but ultimately did not go through with a bid.

Dem Megadonor: I Don’t Care About the Uyghurs

'Of all the things that I care about, yes, it is below my line,' says Biden-tied Chamath Palihapitiya

Billionaire liberal megadonor Chamath Palihapitiya said he does not care about China's genocide of its Uyghur ethnic minority and argued that the "narrative" around the issue "may not be true."

Palihapitiya's remarks came during a Saturday episode of his podcast All-In. The liberal billionaire, who has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to groups aligned with President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), used the podcast to echo Chinese Communist Party propaganda. He said that China may not be committing genocide, that he's "not sure" if the nation is a "brutal dictatorship," and that the United States is not in a position to lecture China on human rights issues.

"Nobody cares about what's happening to the Uyghurs. You bring it up because you really care, and I think that's nice that you care, the rest of us don't care," Palihapitiya said. "I'm telling you a very hard, ugly truth, okay? Of all the things that I care about, yes, it is below my line."

Palihapitiya, who is a part-owner of the National Basketball Association's Golden State Warriors, has deep ties to the Biden administration. Both Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. Agency for International Development administrator Samantha Power served as advisers to Palihapitiya's venture capital firm, Social Capital, before they joined the Biden administration. Palihapitiya in 2020 gave $250,000 to the Biden Victory Fund.

A White House spokeswoman told the Washington Free Beacon the Biden administration rejects Palihapitiya's statement. "The Biden Administration rejects this statement and will continue to hold the PRC accountable," the spokeswoman said, pointing to Biden's support for the bipartisan Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act and other measures to "ensure all global supply chains are free from the use of forced labor."

The Warriors also worked to distance themselves from Palihapitiya, referring to him as a "limited investor who has no day-to-day operating functions with the Warriors."

"Mr. Palihapitiya does not speak on behalf of our franchise, and his views certainly don't reflect those of our organization," the team said in a statement.

In his Saturday episode, Palihapitiya also expressed doubt that China is actually engaging in genocide against the Uyghurs.

"I'm not even sure that China is a dictatorship the way that you want to call it that," Palihapitiya said after a cohost called the communist nation a "brutal dictatorship."

"This issue may be small data points being extrapolated in a way to create a narrative that may not be true," he continued.

In addition to his six-figure Biden campaign contribution, Palihapitiya during the 2020 election cycle gave $750,000 to Schumer's Senate Majority PAC. The liberal billionaire has also contributed tens of thousands of dollars to the Democratic National Committee and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Florida Republican senator Rick Scott admonished Palihapitiya's remarks in a Monday tweet.

"We've always known that the @NBA & many of its owners are happy to put profits over people. Now @chamath is saying it plain as day: he doesn't care that Communist China is committing genocide against the Uyghurs. He doesn't care that millions are sent to forced labor camps," Scott said. "Communist China is imprisoning innocent people simply due to their Muslim faith & silence is appeasement."

Palihapitiya's full comments, which were first shared by American Foreign Policy Council fellow Michael Sobolik, can be viewed here.

Avid Warriors fan and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) did not respond to a request for comment.

Democrat Party megadonor and NBA Co-Owner Chamath Palihapitiya is doing damage control after saying that no one cares if China is committing genocide against its minority Uyghur population, but he is still not apologizing for his remarks.

On Saturday, the billionaire CEO of Societal Capital told the hosts of the All-In podcast that people just don’t care about the enslavement and genocide China is perpetrating against its Muslim Uyghur minority population. And he has other priorities to worry about.

“Nobody cares about what’s happening to the Uyghurs, OK? You bring it up because you really care, and I think it’s nice that you care. The rest of us don’t care. I’m just telling you a very hard, ugly truth. Of all the things that I care about, yes, it is below my line. Of all the things that I care about, it is below my line,” said.

Palihapitiya was quickly blasted for his indifference to genocide. And now, according to the New York Post, Palihapitiya is trying to perform some damage control.

“In re-listening to this week’s podcast, I recognize that I come across as lacking empathy,” Palihapitiya tweeted on Tuesday. “I acknowledge that entirely.”

“As a refugee, my family fled a country with its own human rights issues, so this is something that is very much a part of my lived experience. To be clear, my belief is that human rights matter, whether in China, the United States, or elsewhere. Full stop,” he added.

Palihapitiya did not apologize for his comments, nor did he say what happens to the Uyghurs matters.

On Monday, the Warriors distanced themselves from his intemperate remarks.

“As a limited investor who has no day-to-day operating functions with the Warriors, Mr. Palihapitiya does not speak on behalf of our franchise, and his views certainly don’t reflect those of our organization,” the team said in a statement on Monday.

Even the Biden administration rejected Palihapitiya’s callous feelings about the Uyghurs.

“The Biden Administration rejects this statement and will continue to hold the PRC accountable,” the spokeswoman said. Citing the Biden administration’s support for the Uyghur Forced Labor Protection Act, the spokeswoman reiterated Biden’s commitment to “ensure all global supply chains are free from the use of forced labor.”

Palihapitiya is a major Democrat Donor having donated more than $1 million to Democrats during the 2020 election cycle — including $250,000 to the Biden Victory Fund
