Ron DeSantis: The FBI and DOJ have been weaponized against Americans
Florida governor Ron DeSantis formally launched his presidential bid Wednesday night, with the Republican pledging to restore "sanity to our society" and lead a "great American comeback."
DeSantis's message came in part through a one-minute launch video, during which the Florida governor hammered President Joe Biden for mishandling the southern border, crime, and the economy. That video's release preceded a virtual conversation between DeSantis and billionaire Twitter CEO Elon Musk, though technical issues plagued the conversation's start. Once the roughly hour-long discussion got under way, DeSantis highlighted his legislative accomplishments in Florida as a blueprint to replicate nationwide, and defended himself on hot-button issues such as his battle with Disney.
DeSantis enters the race as former president Donald Trump's most formidable primary challenger. He is the only Republican presidential hopeful besides Trump who has routinely polled in the double-digits, a position that has brought attacks from both Trump and his allies—who have already spent millions on negative advertising against him and begun trashing his wife, Casey—and other GOP primary candidates such as former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, who says he has no charm.
While DeSantis largely refrained from responding to those attacks—the Florida governor in November calledthe intra-party criticism "just noise" and months later said he's "just not following it"—he used his formal announcement to say publicly some of what he has told allies privately over the past few months. DeSantis during his conversation with Musk called to "end the culture of losing that has infected the Republican Party in recent years," a line that came roughly one week after DeSantis told donors that Trump would not be able to win the general election come 2024.
DeSantis's decision to launch his campaign through an unorthodox online conversation with Musk, who has become a popular figure on the right, reflects the Republican's media strategy. The Florida governor has spurned legacy media outlets in favor of conservative alternatives, though it was unclear whether he would continue to do so as a presidential candidate. Wednesday evening's announcement, however, is followed by an interview on Fox News and a press call that appears to be limited to conservative media outlets, an indication DeSantis has no plans to change course.
After roughly 20 minutes of unreliable audio on Wednesday night, Musk ended the discussion, which he held through Twitter's live audio platform, before restarting it around 6:30 p.m. "It seems we broke the internet with so much excitement," DeSantis's campaign tweeted.
The Florida governor emerged as a GOP star during his first term in office by rejecting COVID-era lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and school mask requirements, policies the Republican said made Florida the "freest state" in America. He cruised to reelection last November, defeating his Democratic opponent, Charlie Crist, by a whopping 19 points—the largest margin of victory for any Florida governor in four decades in a year in which Republicans nationwide underperformed expectations.
"My view was I had to look out for the people I represented, for protecting their jobs over trying to safeguard my political hide," DeSantis said Wednesday night. "There was an official narrative about lockdowns, about closing schools, about forced masking, about all these different things that we had to navigate during COVID."
Beyond his COVID policies, DeSantis has shown an eagerness to wade into—and often popularize—cultural fights.
Last year, for example, the Republican signed legislation that prohibited public schools from providing "classroom instruction" on "sexual orientation or gender identity" from kindergarten through third grade. While mainstream media outlets and national Democrats quickly lambasted what they called the "Don't Say Gay" bill as "hateful" and "ugly," everyday voters disagreed. Americans who were presented with the legislation's actual language backed it by a two-to-one margin, according to a 2022 Public Opinion Strategies poll. Nearly 80 percent of U.S. adults, meanwhile, believe it's "inappropriate" for teachers to discuss "trans identity" with students in kindergarten to third grade, a May Washington Post poll found.
"Our mantra in Florida is that the purpose of the schools is education, not indoctrination," DeSantis said during his conversation with Musk.
In addition to his Fox News interview and press call, DeSantis will hold a tele-townhall with a national slate of voters before meeting in the coming days with top campaign donors at a Miami retreat. After the Memorial Day holiday, the Florida governor plans to hold events across several early primary states, according to NBC News.

Joe Biden Doubles Down on Globalism at G7: U.S. Will ‘Not … Decouple from China’
President Joe Biden doubled down on globalism at the G7 summit this week, making clear that his administration is “not looking to decouple [the United States] from China” despite millions of American jobs lost.
“Now, we’re also united in our approach to the People’s Republic of China, and the joint statement released yesterday outlines the shared principles we’ve all agreed at the G7 and beyond in dealing with China,” Biden said during a press conference Sunday in Japan:
We’re not looking to decouple from China, we’re looking to de-risk and diversify our relationship with China. [Emphasis added]
That means taking steps to diversify our supply chains, and we’re not — so we’re not dependent on any one country for necessary product. It means resisting economic coercion together and countering harmful practices that hurt our workers. It means protecting a narrow set of advanced technologies critical for our national security. [Emphasis added]
“Tell that to the 4 million American workers who have lost their jobs to China,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) wrote in a Twitter post in response to the statement.
Biden’s remarks come after he vetoed a bipartisan-approved plan that would have reinstated U.S. tariffs on China-made solar panels — siding with the highly powerful import lobby against American manufacturers.
The comments are a rejection of economic nationalism which has been championed by a number of Republican lawmakers this Congress. Hawley, for instance, recently introduced a “Worker’s Agenda” that would see the U.S. ending its job-killing free trade policy with China.
Likewise, Sens. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Ted Budd (R-NC), Rick Scott (R-FL), and J.D. Vance (R-OH) introduced legislation that would end China’s permanent normal trade relations status which is responsible for eliminating or drastically cutting U.S. tariffs on China-made goods which has resulted in a skyrocketing trade deficit and nationwide job losses.

The Heritage Foundation’s “Mandate for Leadership” report, meant to be a policy guide for Republican presidential administrations, includes analysis by former Trump official Peter Navarro who advocates for a decoupling from China through reciprocal tariffs.
In addition, Navarro wrote that the priority of a future Republican president ought to expand U.S. “tariffs to all Chinese products and increase tariff rates to levels that will block out ‘Made in China’ products, and execute this strategy in a manner and at a pace that will not expose the U.S. to lack of access to essential products like key pharmaceuticals.”
Scott Paul, with the Alliance for American Manufacturing, recently testified before the House Select Committee on China that the U.S. should suspend free trade with China.
“We should suspend or revoke normalized trade relations with China,” Paul said. “The [Chinese Communist Party] certainly doesn’t deserve the same trade status as our allies and reciprocal partners … our hubris and neglect aided Beijing’s ambitions, weakened our capabilities, and hollowed out our middle class.”
Chart via Coalition for a Prosperous America
Since 2001, U.S. free trade with China has eliminated nearly four million American jobs — almost three million of which were lost in the nation’s manufacturing sector. During that same period, at least 50,000 American manufacturing plants closed down.
Those massive job losses have coincided with a booming U.S.-China trade deficit.
In 1985, before China entered the World Trade Organization (WTO), the U.S. trade deficit with China totaled $6 billion. In 2022, the U.S. trade deficit with China totaled more than $383 billion.
While skyrocketing U.S. trade deficits have led to economic devastation, tariffs would be a boon for reshoring jobs and boosting wages. One such study finds that tariffs on nearly all foreign imports would create about ten million American jobs while boosting domestic output.

Rep. Gallagher: Biden Admin Holding Back Sanctions on China After Spy Balloon Incident Is ‘Troubling’
House China Select Committee Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) called a recent report that the Biden administration held back on sanctions against China after the spy balloon incident “troubling” and “scandalous.”
“I think it’s incredibly troubling. Time and time again, we think that by being nice to China, they’re somehow going to moderate their behavior…so I thought it was pretty scandalous,” Gallagher said during a conference call Wednesday in response to a question from Breitbart News.
Last week, Reuters reported that after the Chinese spy balloon traversed America skies in February, some U.S. officials were confident it would galvanize the “U.S. bureaucracy” to push forward a prepared slate of actions against China, but instead, “the U.S. State Department held back human rights-related sanctions, export controls and other sensitive actions to try to limit damage to the U.S.-China relationship.”
Reuters noted that Rick Waters, deputy assistant secretary of State for China and Taiwan, who leads the Office of China Coordination (“China House”) policy division, said in a February 6 email to staff: “Guidance from S (Secretary of State) is to push non-balloon actions to the right so we can focus on symmetric and calibrated response. We can revisit other actions in a few weeks.”
Officials told Reuters that the decision to postpone export licensing rules for telecom equipment maker Huawei and sanctions against Chinese officials for abuses of Uyghurs has “damaged morale at China House.” They also said Secretary of State Antony Blinken had largely delegated China policy duties to Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who announced shortly after the report broke that she would be leaving the administration.
Gallagher also criticized the Biden administration for trying to “downplay” the balloon incident and even hide its existence until local citizens saw it in the sky.
“It’s also become clear that they just did their best to downplay the balloon incident in general, and were hoping that it would just traverse over the United States, nobody would notice and, you know, Blinken could keep his original travel plans to Beijing,” he said, which he said was a strategy that blew up “like a hot air balloon.”
“So, there’s a lot of questions I think Congress needs to ask the State Department. I don’t know if Wendy Sherman will be available to answer those questions going forward, given that she’s planning on leaving, but I really think it’s a perfect encapsulation of this naive belief that guided our China policy for two decades now, which is that we give concessions in the hope that it will reduce the temperature and moderate Chinese behavior when indeed the opposite happens,” he said.
“They read it as weakness and their appetite grows,” he said. “Very, very troubling — the triumph of delusion over experience.”

Four in ten likely voters believe Congress should begin impeachment proceedings on President Joe Biden, a Rasmussen Reports survey revealed on Thursday.
The survey found 42 percent of likely voters indicating that Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against Biden, while 45 percent said lawmakers should not. While most Republicans (70 percent) believe Congress should and most Democrats (71 percent) believe Congress should not, independents remain relatively divided. Forty percent of independents do not believe Congress should begin impeachment proceedings on the 80-year-old president, compared to 39 percent who believe lawmakers should do so.
Further, 53 percent across the board believe it is at least somewhat likely that since taking office, Biden has committed “high crimes and misdemeanors that would justify Congress impeaching him.” Of those, 38 percent said it is “very” likely. Notably, more than one-third of Democrats also believe it is at least somewhat likely, as do 48 percent of independents.
However, when asked how likely it is that Congress will pursue impeachment proceedings against Biden, voters have their doubts. Most, 66 percent, believe it is at least not very likely, and of those, 29 percent believe it is “not at all likely.”
More per Rasmussen Reports:
Significantly more men (58%) than women voters (48%) believe it’s likely Biden has committed high crimes and misdemeanors since becoming president, and men are also more likely to favor Congress beginning impeachment proceedings.
Voters under 40 are much less likely than their elders to think it is Very Likely that Biden has committed impeachable offenses as president, but older voters are less likely to believe Congress actually will pursue impeachment.
The survey was taken May 11 and 14-15, 2023, among 996 likely voters. It has a +/- 3 percent margin of error. It coincides with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announcing articles of impeachment against Biden.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., speaks during a House Select Subcommittee hearing on the coronavirus pandemic investigation of the origins of COVID-19, Tuesday, April 18, 2023, on Capitol Hill in Washington (Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP).
“It is with the highest amount of solemnity that I announce my intention to introduce articles of impeachment today on the head of this America-at-last Executive Branch that has been working since January 20th, 2021, to systematically destroy this country: the President of the United States, Joseph Robinette Biden,” Greene said on Thursday, citing Biden’s lack of border security as a primary issue.
The Georgia lawmaker asserted Biden “deliberately compromised our national security by refusing to enforce immigration laws and secure our border,” as more than five million illegal aliens have been encountered throughout Biden’s presidency.

White House spokesman Ian Sams dismissed Greene’s announcement as a “shameless sideshow political stunt” by what he essentially described as a MAGA extremist — a favorite derogatory characterization used by the Biden administration.

Hunter Biden faces possible subpoena after missing deadline to turn over docs
My colleague Peter Schweizer’s runaway bestseller, Red Handed: How American Elites Get Rich Helping China Win, first revealed that the Biden family received some $31 million from the highest levels of Chinese intelligence at the same time Hunter was paying the vice president’s bills. Schweizer believes that there is a slam dunk case to indict Hunter Biden.
American people deserve to know what China was up to with Joe Biden, especially when Beijing had already shelled out millions of dollars to Biden family members — including millions in set-asides for “the big guy.” What else is on that infamous Hunter Biden laptop? The conflicted Biden Justice Department cannot be trusted to engage in any meaningful oversight on this issue. We need a special counsel now.

Hunter has reportedly sold five paintings worth $75,000 each to an anonymous buyer. Hunter’s art dealer, Georges Bergès, has previously boasted he had strong ties to businessmen in Communist China, which has concerned many due to the Biden family’s business ventures abroad.
“We are 95% sure that that artwork went to China,” Comer said. “We don’t know where exactly that went to in China, but we’re going to try to find out when we get subpoena power.”
Peter Schweizer’s new book Red-Handed: How American Elites Get Rich Helping China Win tells the story of how Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) husband Richard Blum was part owner of a Chinese firm that allegedly sold computers with spyware chips to the U.S. military. The military has never been able to calculate how much sensitive data these computers allowed China to steal.

Montana has become the first U.S. state to ban the China-owned app TikTok. Governor Greg Gianforte (R) announced Wednesday that he has singed legislation in order to protect his state’s residents from “the Chinese Communist Party.”
“To protect Montanans’ personal and private data from the Chinese Communist Party, I have banned TikTok in Montana,” Gov. Gianforte said in a tweet.
The governor signed Senate Bill 419 — which bans the Chinese app from operating within Montana’s borders — into law on Wednesday, according to a report by KTVH. The ban will go into effect on January 1, 2024.

“The Chinese Communist Party using TikTok to spy on Americans, violate their privacy, and collect their personal, private, and sensitive information is well-documented,” Gianforte said.
“Today, Montana takes the most decisive action of any state to protect Montanans’ private data and sensitive personal information from being harvested by the Chinese Communist Party,” the governor added.
The law will reportedly let the Montana Department of Justice fine app stores or TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, $10,000 for each discrete violation, and $10,000 for each day that a violation continues.
The legislation also prohibits companies like Apple and Google from offering the Chinese app for download. The law will only impact the distribution of the Chinese app, and will not have any penalties for TikTok users.
Meanwhile, state agencies in Montana, as well as the federal government, have already banned the Chinese app on government devices, as the government widely views TikTok as a national security threat.
Additionally, TikTok’s parent company has already been caught snooping on U.S. and UK journalists in multiple instances.
As Breitbart News previously reported, ByteDance employees have obtained the private user data of U.S. journalists. The Chinese company was also recently discovered having tracked a UK journalist via her cat’s TikTok account, which didn’t even have her real name on it.
Meanwhile, a former executive at ByteDance says the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has “supreme access” to all data held by TikTok’s parent company, including on servers in the United States. He added that the CCP even has a special office inside the company, which monitors Bytedance and TikTok, guiding the entities in advancing “core Communist values.”
